On Tuesday 2^nd of this month at Panjim Kala Academy Hall, I saw the Tiatro “To Khuim Asa?” written and directed by the new director Coly-Col. Though the Tiatro attendancewise was not successful but performancewise it was a great success and the major credit for staging such a beautiful Tiatro by a new director goes of course to Coly-Col and his entire troupe.  Howerver, from what I have seen on the Stage, Mr. Teotonio D'Costa who was also a member of the troupe also played a very supportive role to the director to make this Tiatro performancewise a wonderful enactment.

Every scene was interesting and every artiste though many of them are new faces to me gave his/her best.  From what I noticed that day, these new faces males and females have great role to play in the progress of Tiatro in the future.  There was no vulgarity nor indecency displayed because there was not a single known vulgar and known indecent artiste.  The director himself is an upright man as I was told who is leading an upright life with his family.

Both the comedians played their role well and being new to the Stage they lacked nothing to come to the high level.

All the females namely Rima-Jennifer-Anita though they are new to the professional Stage yet they played their roles as if they are seasoned artistes.  Their looks are good so also their acts and dress code in tune with their respective roles.

The story surrounded around a mother who while spinster gave a birth to a child thru illicit sex and later on after getting married she keeps the boy at her place without knowing the actual secret to anyone.  But ultimately the “ cat was out of the bag” where a lot of information one got to emulate in one’s life.  Teotonio D'Costa played a beautiful role of the father while the role of the illegitimate son played by Michael  D'Costa was excellent.

In the side show songs, yet again Saby de Divar gained lot of respect from the audience by singing a nice political song.  Robert de Calvim was the star of the show by rendering two excellent solos, one was the political and the other was a “Zupatti” to a person who is spoiling his name.  Both his compositions were praiseworthy.  Michael D’Costa’s solo on the murder of a young student was very philosophical and of very high standard. The solo on HIV rendered by Teotonio D'Costa was of very high moral standard.  He sang it also very well.  He also rendered a nice duet with one of the female artistes.  The trio rendered by all the three girls on Soccer pinpointing the success of Romeo Fernandes was just a class by itself. It was composed well and rendered also well.

The director has announced from the stage while thanking the audience for their support however small in quantity it may be, that his next release of Tiatro will be in October.  I am sure it will be more powerful with some professional singers.

VULGAR TIATRISTS THREATENING ME.

Yesterday night at about 10.30 pm, I received 2 telephone calls using threatening and abusive language against me for writing in this forum on vulgar tiatrists about their vulgar acts on the Stage, one of the calls from the son and the other from his father. The way they talked it sounded that they are the owners of this world and they are capable of doing anything to me.  They think I am wearing ladies Bangles. I don’t know what they think of themselves.  Ultimately the father said he will file a defamation case against me and I answered saying o.k. Meantime, I have already informed to whom I have to inform, of these threatening calls by both the tiatrists father and son duo. They both failed to accept the fact that they being the public figures as Tiatrists their actions from the Stage are in the hands of public scrutiny. They feel they are both omnipotent and as such they are infallible.   If they and Tiatrists like them feel they cannot be criticized for their wrong doings then they should leave the public forum of Konkani Stage. 

Tiatro is a very good part of our culture and since its birth it played a very productive role in our society.  It is partly because of the Tiatro our society is changed for the good.  The effect of rigid caste system was minimized because of the Tiatro, the arrogance of clergy was reduced because of the Tiatro, the inequality in society was reduced because of the Tiatro. Likewise so many ills of society were cured by the Tiatros.

About 25 years after its birth, Tiatro enactment gone into the hands of corrupt and vulgar tiatrists whom the Pai Tiatrist called as “ROSTAD TIATRISTS”.  Because of this the audience became less for Tiatros and elite audience stopped watching Tiatros. Then Minguel Rod came into the picture and thru his Tiatros he brought total change in Tiatro audience because Minguel Rod magnetized the elite audience to the Tiatro.

Still Tiatros are dominated by third rate tiatrists who are promoting themselves by enacting cheap and vulgar Tiatros and vulgar scenes, indecent and immoral songs.  Thru this vulgarity these tiatrists are killing this beautiful art of Tiatro initiated by Lucasinho Ribeiro. Since this is the case every lover and promoter of Tiatros is duty bound to raise his or her voice against vulgarity in Tiatros promoted by the vulgar Tiatrists. If we do not put an end to the vulgarity in Tiatro then vulgarity will put an end to Tiatro. And that will be the end of genuine Tiatro.

One of the reasons for entering vulgarity in Tiatros is because some of the Tiatrists are deep rooted vulgar without proper manner and discipline in life.  How a drunkard Tiatrist can exhibit discipline?  What discipline one can expect from a Tiatrist who was bought up by the hired mother when his own mother deserted him?  What discipline and decency one can expect from a Tiatrist who is a habitual wife deserter and living with a hired wife immorally?  When a Tiatrists live in perpetual vulgarity he will be a slave of vulgarity which he will carry wherever he goes.

Even the Church leaders must preach from the Altars the ills of vulgarity displayed by the vulgar Tiatrists from the Stage.

TIATRO "SUKNNEACHEM GHOR GHONTTER NHOI".

While strongly commending Mario Menezes for staging his nice Tiatro “Suknneachem Ghor Ghontter Nhoi” on 27^th of this month at Pai Tiatrist Hall, Margao which was a house full attendencawise, I strongly condemn the vulgar scene enacted by Comedians Brian and Salvy and also the comedy Trio rendered by Comedians Brian, Jannet and Selvy.  In that comedy scene, Selvy carry a Radio set but since due to non-availability of the range, he touches the upper tip of the Aerial of the radio set to the private part of comedian Brian and suddenly radio set starts.  When vulgar members of the audience laugh loudly for this vulgar act, they both like “Baizona” repeat the same action.

In the trio the language and actions used by them clearly indicate the display of vulgarity.  The terminology used by them is having double meaning and the action they display while singing their trio clearly show the indecency and vulgarity. It is really disgusting and humiliating for the decent audience to see this nonsense.  It is surprising to note how such a decent and educated man Mario Menezes tolerated this type of vulgarity in his beautiful Tiiatro.  It is also surprising to note that none of the senior Tiatrists participating in this Tiatro brought this to the notice of the director.  Just because you get encore once, twice and thrice that does not mean your trio and comedy are good.  Only the third class audience applauds this type of third class comedy and song done by the third class Tiatrists. Because of this vulgarity much of the greatness of this Tiatro suffered. Tiatro is a part of our cultural item and it is our duty not to malign it by using it indecently and vulgarly.

What I have seen in my life after watching Tiatro for so many years, Tiatrists having third class parentage and disgraceful family background are the authors of vulgarity and indecency display from the Stage.  They are scum of the society and shameless. It is this class of Tiatrists that was once responsible for degrading the quality of Tiatro and precisely because of this the elite class of Goans boycotted the Tiatros. Pai Tiiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes called such Tiatrists as "ROSTAD TIATRISTS".  Who is this comedian Brian a “kalcho porcho potto” to take law of decency into his own hands and display vulgarity on the Stage?  His father Peter is so nice, cannot he guide him properly?  Who is comedian Selvy and comedian Jannet to display their dirty talent on the Stage?  Didn’t these comedians get proper parental care and discipline at home or they are brought-up in the jungle like wild animals?  Tiatro is not their monopoly to act the way they want.  What is  their contribution to raise Tiatro to the pedestal?

Coming back to the Tiatro, story is well scripted and well enacted mainly by Mario Menezes himself, Rosy Alvares, Tari and Semenca.  The story tells how the present day generation is not bothered on its elderly parents.

In the side show songs Saby de Divar’s solo on politics scores highest marks and if I am not mistaken he is the best currently in rendering political songs which he renders with perfect clarity and they are full of logic and matter.  The solo sung by Jr. Nelson on politics  was worth admiring and his trio with his other two colleagues was exceptionally fabulous. Lawry Travasso rendered a good solo and a duet with Rosy Alvares.   Marcos Vaz’s solo on the plight of the three sick Tiatrists namely Anthony D’Souza-Ben Evangelisto-Jr. Rod was fantastic.
