Kuwait Goans crowned Champions; AVC create world record losing 4 consecutive finals: NYC Trophy in Kuwait

-By Gasper Crasto
Kuwait City Jan 30: Kuwait Goans Association (KGA) won the prestigious 18th NYC Trophy football tournament organized by Navelim Youth Centre beating AVC Overseas Association 1-0 in the final played at Salmiya Municipality Grounds on Friday, 25th January 2008.

Jubilant Kuwait Goans with the guests after the finals

AVC failed to break the jinx of winning the prestigious NYC trophy yet again in their fourth consecutive final. They lost the earlier 3 finals to G.O.A Maroons, Curtorcares United and DHL respectively. There is no other available instance in world football of a side losing 4 straight finals. While Bombay holds the record for most consecutive titles in the world (15 Ranji Trophy championships in a row from 1958-59 to 1972-73), AVC Overseas Association, known as Real Madrid of Kuwait Indian football have broken the record of English Premier giants Arsenal of 3 consecutive runners-up titles. Arsenal were League runners-up from 1999 to 2001.

The final played in chilling temperatures (8°C in Kuwait City) was watched by a sizeable number of spectators, many ladies were drawn to watch as well. But the match failed to live up to the expectations. The first half was so dreary, not a single hard shot was taken on the goal. Some of the players made more show of themselves than play good football. It was pathetic to see some players turn around with a glare and give that 'I will kill you' kind of a look for even a slight touch or a fair tackle and scream 'ref' every for every body contact. Some played like enemies instead of playing like true opponents.

Chief Guest Shri. Wilson Coelho handing over the NYC Trophy to Kuwait Goans captain Vico D’Souza. Also seen in the photo are Nicholas Monteiro, Agnello Dias, Lawry Pinto and NYC President Mario Carneiro

"Gone are the days where teams like Navelim, Goa Maroons, Incredible, United Goans, Rising Stars to name a few, used to dish out magical football," sighed a star footballer of yesteryears, "Spectators used to watch 'those' games with excitement, never taking their eyes off the ball. Today's players come to the ground laughing, joking and showing off their looks and 'expensive' boots. There's a lack of seriousness or a feeling of competitive anxiety towards the game..."

The match gained momentum only in the second half after KGA shot into the lead taking advantage of a defense lapse. KGA's Vico D' Souza rushed forward and passed the ball to unmarked Russel Rodrigues whose crisp shot beat goalkeeper Alvaro Dias in the AVC goal (1-0).

There was plenty of action in the last quarter of play with AVC moving the ball forward with alacrity, trying hard to get an equalizer. They peppered KGA's goal with a flurry of scoring opportunities with tries from Lucian D'Souza, Ronnie Fernandes and Francisco Fernandes. AVC came up with all out efforts in the dying minutes of the match which forced KGA goalkeeper Martin Dias to make splendid saves off Joseph Quadros and Leroy Rodrigues. Jubilant supporters of KGA rushed on the ground to hug their players on the final whistle of the match.

Sarto Baptista affiliated to Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA) officiated the match assisted by Tony D'Costa and Phillip Ferrao.

NYC President Mario Carneiro was all praise for Kuwait Goans for inscribing their name on the prestigious trophy for the first time. He congratulated them "for being the new champions of Kuwait Indian football."

Shri Wilson Coelho, honorable President of Goan Welfare Society was chief guest on the occasion and spoke at the prize distribution ceremony. He praised Navelim Youth Centre for successfully conducting the 18 editions of the trophy. He also acknowledged the efforts of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) to promote football among the Indian expatriates living in Kuwait. While hailing the publicity given to the tournament in Arab Times, indianfootball.com and other websites, Mr. Coelho promised all support on behalf of Goan Welfare Society and in his own capacity to look into the prospects of further promoting the sport. He also assured to take up the matter with the Indian and Kuwaiti authorities for an appropriate and a regular playing field for Indians.

Lawry Pinto, Ex-President of KIFF was the guest of honor. Other distinguished dignitaries that presided were Cajetan Pereira - President of United Friends Club, Manuel D'Costa -Vice-President of KIFF, Thomas Fernandes - Founder member of Navelim Youth Centre, and Nicholas Monteiro, ex-player of Navelim Youth Centre.

Wilson Coelho presented the Trophy to the winners to a big applause of the KGA supporters. NYC Rolling Trophy, perhaps one of the most uniquely sculpt trophies worldwide was instituted in the year 1993, Saligao Sports Club being the winners in the inaugural year. 19 registered teams affiliated to Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) participated in the 18th edition. The tournament played under the auspices of KIFF provides players with the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play -- in perhaps one of the most prestigious football tournament among Indians abroad.

Earlier, the guests were introduced to the teams by Agnello A.S Fernandes, Advisor of NYC.

LUIZINHO FALEIRO & HIS SECURITY

LUIZINHO FALEIRO & HIS SECURITY.

According to the latest news report from Goa, during the ceremony of unveiling of the full size statue of freedom fighter Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia at Lohia Maidan in Margao on 25.01.08, Luizinho Faleiro was also present. He not only attended the ceremony but he also gave a speech in eulogy of Dr. Lohia.

When Luizinho Faleiro was the Chief Minister of Goa, there was a battalion of police escorts to protect him. Protection from whom? From terrorists? Criminals and thieves? In fact the police escorts that time given to him was to protect him from nobody because nobody is interested in robbing or killing Luizinho Faleiro. Is he wanted anywhere? When he came to Lohia Maidan how many policemen were escorting him? While coming and going from Lohia Maidan on that day, how many Pilot cars were surrounding him and his motorcade? According to my information, even a “Kuddo Mus” was not interested in Luizinho Faleiro on that day. The police protection and police escorts surrounding him when he was the Chief Minister was nothing but a big tamasha to gain artificial importance and to make him an artificial Maharaja at the cost public money which is frittered away by our short term Montris and Sobapotis on unnecessary luxuries.

Since his defeat from the hands of his Kumpar Churchill Alemao, Luizin Faleiro was hiding from public glare. But now suddenly he is coming out. Is it to shadow his “Kumpar” Churchill from gaining more limelight after his entry into Congress? Defeated politicians are always on hunt to regain their lost public image and Lohia Maidan function was the good opportunity for him to make his presence felt, of course without the former police dharbar of the type our colonialists used to enjoy to show their superiority against the locals. Our Montris and Sobapotis are become neocolonialists. But are our Montris really superior? If yes, then in what way? In robbing Goans by using all the benefits at the cost of tax payers? If Goa is today destroyed, it was only because of our Montris. People in Goa must raise this issue of unnecessary police protection for Montris which puts heavy pressure on the public resources. The police protection for Montris reminds us of the pomp made by the colonialists under their rule. Are we still under colonial rule to imitate the colonialists? The Goans who consider them advanced in India should put their heads down in shame for the pompous behaviour of their elected representatives.

And on top of it, everyone of them says that he is the follower of Mahatmah Gandhi. It is a disgrace on the simplicity of Bapuji when such pompous rascals are following the great soul. The Montris and Goan political Babus got no right even to utter the immaculate name of Bapuji who always led a very simple and orinary life. Are our current politicians and Montris worthy even to take the name of Mahtmah Gandhi? Mahatma Gandhi refused police escort for him even preferring death from the assassins. Will our current politicians, Montris and Sobapotis agree to discard their unwanted police escorts thereby living a simple life in tune with the common man living standard thereby identifying themselves with the common men? I doubt.

ARE GOAN VOTERS "GHANTTA BOIL?"

ARE GOAN VOTERS “GHANTTA BOIL?”

Are Goan voters considered as “Ghantta Boil” by our elected representatives whom we call MLA’s? Or at least the voters of Churchill Alemao in Navelim, Reginaldo Lourenco in Curtorim and Babush Monsurate in Taleigao?. Navelim constituents and Navelim village in particular had a great distinction to produce one of the greatest Goans in Francis Luis Gomes who was a great Goan parliamentarian representing Goa in Portuguese Parliament. From foreign soil he had unique distinction of raising the issue of freedom not only for Goa but also for India much before Nehrus and Ghandis could do. Dr. Gomes was a great and very patriotic Goan who has given his total dedication to the good of the society with his unbending principles. When he was elected to Parliament he remained faithful to the cause of his principles and did not flirt like a “Pamprel” from one place to another for the greed of power and money. Churchill Alemao who is known to flirt constantly with different parties has brought a very bad name not only to the village of Dr. Gomes but also to the whole constituency by merging his SGF party with Congress that was his bitter enemy, without taking all his voters and supporters into confidence. By unilaterally taking this action of merging his SGF party into Congress of Italian Sonia Gandhi, Churchill took his voters and supporters for a ride.

During the electioneering process, Churchill was shouting and screaming against Congress and making his supporters enemies of Congress and Luizinho Faleiro. But now the same Churchill without any shame befriended with the same Congress of Luizinho Faleiro and surprisingly everybody in Navelim is silent. Are all Navelkars impotent to raise their opposition? By ignoring the feelings and sentiments of his voters and supporters Churchill made fools of all of them. He treated all his voters and supporters as “Ghantta Boil” because everyone of them nodded their heads with “Yes, Churchill Bab”. Churchill Bab is not interested in his principles but, are not his voters interested in their principles? Are these voters so cheap to accept Churchill’s games like “Ghantta Boil” silently? By joining Congress, Churchill got his pound of flesh. But what about the voters? What did they get and in what way they are benefited by Churchill joining his enemy Congress? Churchill is boasting that he got his major demands fulfilled by merging with SGF but why he not fought forcefully to get recognition to Romi Script Konkani? Is Churchill really faithfull to Konkani cause or he is playing on the sentiments of Romi Konkani supporters only to get their votes? I have my doubts of his sincerity towards the cause of Konkani in general and Romi script in particular. Romi Konknnivadis and stalwarts should ponder over this.

Will Churchill remain faithful to Congress? I have my own doubts. Churchill has no clear cut direction. He is taking his voters for a ride and these voters like fools are succumbing to his wishes. It is a pity that the great tradition put in by the great son of Navelim Dr. Frncis Luis Gomes is trampled by Churchill Alemao under his feet and regrettably Navelim constituents are allowing Churchill to treat them as “Ghantta Boil”.

The other partner in the crime of SGF is Reginaldo Lourenco from Curtorim constituency. When he defeated Francis Sardinha people pinned high hopes on him that he will maintain his integrity and not flirt with any other person and party like a prostitute. But he too fell prey to Churchill’s wooing to join Congress. Because of Reginaldo Lourenco in Curtorim, lot of innocent people created enmities with Sardinha, his group and Congress party. What is the fate of these people? Did Reginaldo think of them? Or he is interested in his prize only? Are Curtorim voters of SGF become so cheap to accept anything and everything of their MLA blindly? Did Reginaldo take all his voters into confidence before merging into Congress? And will these defectors and party deserters remain faithful to Congress and its ideals, if Congress is having any ideals? Reginaldo and Churchill are both domestic minded politicians and they will never be comfortable in Congress. For any misunderstanding and for any opposition by Congress High Command Churchill will get annoyed and will rebel again against Congress. And then where he will go? He will re-invigorate SGF or form one more local outfit and along with him all his “Ghantta Boil” will join him?

Babush Monsurate has openly declared as per the media reports that he will resign from his current seat and recontest from Taleigao again. He is so sure to get elected because he took all his voters for granted because he knows they are not his voters but his “Ghantta Boil”. If they are not then they should tell him openly and loudly that we will not support you in your mockery of election. Babush knows he is capable of purchasing the purchasable “Ghantta Boil” in his constituency. In Taleigao constituency there must be some strong awakening on Babush who treats his voters and supporters as politically idiots and in fact they are and because they are, they are accepting anything and everything of what Babush does against the great principle of democracy.

We Goans are very proud of our Goanness. Many of us think that we are far superior to our counterparts in other parts of India. But are we politically matured enough inspite of our high literacy rate? Biharis are far better, Ghanttis are far better but not many or most of us. For this reason we are allowing our MLA’s to treat us like Ghantta Boil.

Kuwait.

Kuwait Goans to clash with AVC in NYC Trophy finals

18th Edition of NYC Trophy - Semifinals
-By Gasper Crasto

Kuwait: Kuwait Goans Association (KGA) scored a convincing 2-0 victory over Fahaheel Brothers while AVC Overseas Association hammered Don Bosco Oratory 4-1 in the semifinals of the 18th NYC Trophy played at Salmiya Grounds.

Kuwait Goans sponsored by Siemens will now lock horns with AVC in the finals on Friday, 25th January 2008 at Salmiya Municipality grounds (behind Salmiya Co-operative) starting 8.30am.

It is moment of pride for both teams to be in a prestigious final. Kuwait Goans established in 2005 has shown tremendous progress in the tournament. “We want to win the Trophy...we shall win it for our player Christovam who got injured in the quarter-finals,” said an emotional KGA captain Vico D’Souza after their match.

Captains of KGA & AVC

AVC Overseas Association are in the forefront of Indian football for the past few years now. Since winning the Expatriate Overseas Championship held at Bahrain in 2004, AVC have won a number of tournaments. They hold a strange record of losing the last 3 consecutive finals of the NYC Trophy. “We will definitely break the jinx this time,” asserted AVC captain Francis Fernandes.

Action from KGA v/s Fahaheel Bros

KGA were on top after taking the lead off a superb goal by striker Andre Dias from outside the box. He added another one to his tally five minutes from end. Andre tops the scoring list with 7 goals in the tournament. Except for striker Liyakat Ali, no one really came close to scoring for Fahaheel. Caridade D’Souza, Vico, Jacob Dias and substitute Zelito Cardozo shone for the winners in midfield play.

IFRA referees Tony D'Costa, Richard Nixon & Sarto Baptista

Referee Tony D’Costa did not allow any close contact between players, at times he was too harsh to carry on with the game, pulling fouls which were not there. He flashed yellow cards to Fahaheel Brothers’ Sulaiman and Riyaz for dangerous play. KGA’s Zelito Cardozo was also flashed a yellow.

KGA in prayer after winning the match

The other semi-final started on a high, Don Bosco fighting to be in the finals for the first time. However, AVC defense marshaled by captain Francis and Joseph Quadros was too strong for the inexperienced Don Bosco. The less said about Don Bosco team the better. One thing, the youngsters have to learn much not to concede a goal before venturing out to score -- especially in a semifinal of a prestigious tournament – where not many teams get to reach that top. It looks they never learnt from their semifinal defeat in the UG Trophy tournament with the same opponent last year. AVC dominated the match and outplayed Don Bosco in all departments of the game.

Don Bosco v/s AVC

Some of Don Bosco’s players never looked they were playing a semifinal. While their stars Alex Sequiera, Roshan Dias, Diago D’Souza, Custodio Ataide, Ratan Dogra, etc, existed in the match, Steven Rodrigues was the lone fighter running tirelessly throughout the match. Vicky Bob (2 goals), Peter Crasto and Leroy Rodrigues scored for AVC. Substitue Phillip Duarte reduced the margin for Don Bosco in the dying minutes of the match.

The tournament organized by Navelim Youth Centre (NYC) is played under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) and officiated by Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA).

The NYC Trophy, perhaps one of the most uniquely sculpt trophies worldwide was instituted in the year 1993. Nineteen teams registered with Kuwait Indian Football Federation were in fray. Last edition of the trophy was won by DHL beating AVC 2-0 in the finals. Host Navelim have won the trophy maximum 6 times followed by G.O.A Maroons – 5 times.

Meanwhile, President Mario Carneiro of Navelim Youth Centre extended invitation to all member clubs, affiliates and football lovers to come and witness the grand finale on Friday.

INJURED GOAN FOOTBALLER NEEDS HELP

Further to the earlier postings in this forum (DHL Kuwait disgrace in hurting Kuwait Goans ; DHL player cripples opponent: NYC Trophy, Kuwait ) on the severe injury of a broken leg caused to Kuwait Goan Association (KGA) player Christovam Colaco by DHL player Elvis Camilo, as per my latest information, the KGA player Colaco was discharged from the hospital after a lengthy operation was performed on him. He is now staying with one of his friends of KGA team. Hospital has advised him total bed rest. He needs somebody to look after him but here since he has nobody to look after, his situation is become more chronic even though his friends are doing what they can.

There are all indications that he will have to leave Kuwait because for the next few months he will require total bed rest. This he can get only in Goa where there will be somebody to physically take care of him. To repatriate him back home to Goa, he needs money not only for his Air Ticket but also for other maintenance and medical expenses. On Friday, 18th of this month, some of his friends distributed lists on the soccer ground for the donation/collection for this cause. Now, it is an imperative need to support this young Goan boy who due to this injury by DHL Kuwait player is totally shattered physically and mentally since knowing not what his future is. He came to Kuwait to earn his livelihood but this severe injury destroyed all his plans and dreams. Who is responsible for this? DHL Kuwait? KGA for not providing its players sufficient and required cover for any injury? Or the destiny of the player is responsible for his plight?

It was reported in the news media that KIFF committee were supposed to discuss on the protest lodged by KGA against the brutal foul. As per my information, no action has been still taken on the guilty player or the barbaric conduct of the substitute players of DHL team. Is there a conspiracy involved to shun the incident to save the sponsor from shame? Or save the team and their player/s from further disgrace? Why is the KGA silence over this matter? Are they asked by KIFF to keep shut? Why is the KIFF shut?

Whatever it may be, we the people of good hearts cannot remain as silent spectators at this stage. Whether DHL Kuwait comes to his rescue or not is not relevant. Whether KGA is capable of doing anything to him is also irrelevant. What is relevant is can we all do something as Goans for this young Goan boy who fell victim of vicious hard tackling of a DHL player? Why not!! We have so many Soccer Clubs and Teams in Kuwait. Let every Team/Club contribute KD 50/- for this cause. Besides we have Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) an apex body to control our soccer in Kuwait. Recently KIFF organized a KIFF Nite in Kuwait and according to reliable source a huge amount of money has been collected as profit. Can KIFF management release a sizeable portion of this profit to the aid of this injured Goan player so that he can recuperate suitably in Goa without any tension? While in Goa, by all means he should be kept tension free.

Up to now KIFF as per my information, has not officially declared the profit of the mentioned KIFF Nite. KIFF is currently headed by Viegas who earlier was involved in fund scandal of KIFF when he was Treasurer of KIFF. Good that the then KIFF president Mr. Vohra was considerate to Viegas otherwise Viegas should have been dismissed from the KIFF.

Additionally and most importantly we have our community organization Goan Welfare Society having in its kitty about 40 thousand Kuwaiti Dinars, out of this huge fund, the major portion around 30 thousand KD are held in the personal account of three persons. This huge fund is meant for the welfare of the community members and not to retain in the personal accounts of the three office bearers. This fund of Welfare Society is meant to spend in Kuwait for the welfare of the community members. This Goan organization is named as Welfare Society. If this is the case then this organization is duty bound to look after the welfare of the needy members of the Goan community. And by doing this GWS will not be doing any favour on this injured Goan member but only perform its obligation. To perform such obligations and duties GWS is come into existence. All the member s of the Goan Welfare Society must now generate an opinion in their circle to support this injured boy. If the members of GWS are really interested in doing welfare work as per the motto of this association then they will speed up their efforts.

I am also requesting Goans spread all around the globe especially those who are involved in the promotion of Goan sports in the Gulf and other countries to show their kindness towards the sad plight of this DHL Kuwait injured boy Colaco.
Those who are interested in raising this issue with DHL International all around the globe to help this boy on humanitarian grounds, they can go ahead. Our Goans spread in other parts of the world are more dynamic and more capable in many respects. Whatever they can do they should do but relieve this injured boy of all pains and tensions.

During my last so many years of stay in Kuwait and very actively taking part in our soccer from the time of its inception in 1979, I have noticed one thing: Many of the weakest, the brutest, the intellectually backwardest, roughest, drunkardest Goans are involved in our soccer activities. Normally, in that segment you don’t find intellectually matured, intellectually advanced and wisdomatic people from our community. Majority of the people involved in this circle are cheap people craving for cheap prominence and cheap publicity. Most of those who are involved in promoting our soccer under KIFF are stupid Goans who when time comes for doing any good for the cause of community will sleep at home and that too under the petticoats of their wives and mistresses. Take for example, when we organized a movement for the cause of Goan Konkani Language very few Goans from this circle supported our move. When we organized our movement in the aftermath of Kuwait invasion, only a microscopic number from this circle associated with us.

I don’t think any of the Goan Office bearer of DHL soccer Team associated with us. Even later on for the cause of the Release of Kuwait’s POW’s we did so much but no known Goan from DHL team associated with us. When there is any football match they come with the battalion of their vehicles in the show of strength but to do something for good cause nothing is forthcoming. Why DHL only, there are other similar teams and their office bearers too sailing in the same boat. Many of the office bearers of many of our Clubs and Teams foolishly think that they are running teams like Bemfica, Real Madrid, AC Milan and such others. But in reality they lack experience back at home even to organize a ‘kazari-ankvari festachi match’ in their own small locality. By the way, who in their locality gives such low people opportunity to run their village Clubs? For such cheap people Kuwait is become a very lucrative place to make a big show. For this pompous show, intelligent people are laughing and mocking. It is a pity our affairs are manned by ignorant people and if this attitude persists then community affairs will fall into the hands of idiots -- which should be avoided by all means.

LIBERATION WAR OF KUWAIT.

LIBERATION WAR OF KUWAIT.

Exactly today 17th of this month in 1991, 17 years back, Americans along with French and British troops started the war for the liberation of Kuwait against Iraqi regime headed by that monster Saddam Hussein. While this US led war was going on for the liberation of Kuwait, we in Goa were deeply engrossed in our thoughts knowing not what would be our fate. We were no doubt under Hamletic influence knowing not what decision to take yet we were praying hard for the liberation of Kuwait. While we were praying hard for the liberation of Kuwait from where we earn our sustenance, we were also campaigning hard under GOA KUWAIT SOLIDARITY CENTER to put pressure on the Government of India to openly align with Kuwait and openly support the liberation war of Kuwait. In this direction we organized big rallies on the streets of Panjim, held big public meetings in Panjim at Azad Maidan and highlighted the cause of Kuwait. Our voice with its echo was heard not only in Goa and Delhi but also all around the globe thru the media especially thru Radio and CNN broadcasting. By our movement we showed to Kuwaitis and its leadership stationed at Taif in Saudi Arabia that we Indians from Goa are bodily and soully with them. The leadership of Kuwait thru its Ambassador in Delhi showed total appreciation of what we did for Kuwait, its cause and Kuwaitis. The result of our movement was the love, affection and strong bond shown to us by Kuwait and Kuwaitis.

Though there was lot of goodwill generated for our plight in Goa yet the very people who needed Kuwait, who used Kuwait for their benefits and also used our status in Kuwait for their promotion had never sided with us openly, though some of them claimed to be our silent supporters. For example, most of the activists, supporters and promoters of Konkani inspite of being recipients of our donations in lakhs of rupees from Kuwait never supported us nor our movement publicly and openly. To cite an example. Fr. Freddy J. D’Costa who after enjoying so much of doles from us never openly supported us, on the contrary criticized me saying “Veronica kitem Kuwait liberate korunk aila re?”. “Beiman to, taka Veronican adhar kela te porim bhou thoddeani kela”. If his Gulab is on strong footing today it was partly because of the assistance Veronica gave to lay a solid base for it.

Gurunath Kelekar, the late Dr. Rebello and other stalwarts of Novem Goem Newspaper and Novem Goem Pratishthan never associated with us nor gave a consolimg word for us by joining in our meetings and rallies inspite of receiving donations in lakhs of rupees for Novem Goem Newspaper whose initiator was Gurunath Kelekar himself. They never thought that Kuwait will be liberated. They thought Kuwaitkar “melet mhonn”. They were heavy beneficiaries of our donations, doles and charity. Gurunath Kelekar had major responsibility to support us when he enjoyed so much of support from Kuwaitkars in general and me in particular when he was a non entity amongst Kuwait Goans. But he too was a Beiman. He wanted me to save him from getting ousted from Novem Goem and to raise funds for Novem Goem. But during our critical time he never even wished me. This is the quality of some of our Freedom Fighters and stalwarts in Konkani movement. The late Dr. Rebello from Maddel Margao was equally guilty like Kelekar and others in their bracket.

There was nobody to support us from Goa Cancer Hospital – Dona Paula when they received around 20 lakhs of rupees from Kuwait Goans as donation for the construction of Goa Cancer Hospital. Where is this hospital gone now and who owns it? Where is our donation gone? None of the priests and nuns who received so much from us for their schools and convents, churches and chapels associated with us. Many Padris ani Madris were the biggest “Beiman” and “Devchar” though they fool the faithfuls by wearing the robes of Christ thereby disgracing the immaculate image of Jesus Christ. That was the first time in my life I came to know that how ungrateful the priests and nuns can be. Likewise there are innumerable examples of our Goans who became “Beiman” on us inspite of enjoying benefits from us. Posterity must judge these people and deal with them accordingly because their attitude is “Kam Zalem Voiz Melo”.

The other biggest “Beiman” and Traitors are the Tiatrists especially those who mocked and criticized us from the stage for getting uprooted from Kuwait. Though few defamed and mocked at us from the stage at a wrong time when we were not in position to bear their insults but regretfully none amongst the Tiatrists had marbles in their “kalsanvam” to openly oppose our critics in Tiatro fraternity. The top beneficiaries of Kuwait and its liberation are the Tiatrists. Some of them by regularly coming to Kuwait during the last so many years especially after the liberation of Kuwait made so much of money, some thru proper means and while others thru chicanery, robberies, cheatings and thru other foul means. Among the short duration visitors in Kuwait, some of the finest “bamttes” are from this category. They want Kuwait and Kuwait Goans only to make money and for their benefits. In my life, I never came across as “beiman” as some of the beiman Tiatrists. During the time of invasion of Kuwait they were not babies sucking the breasts of their mothers. They were grown up and clever enough to know what is good and what is bad. In view of this they should have supported us but they failed because they are enemies of Kuwait. Yet they want to come to Kuwait because the taste for petro dollar is better than that of Indian Rupees.

I met during those days one Tiatrist who said “atam nhidat ghara” and continued on saying that “you deserve this punishment”. Further he said “who wants your Kuwait now? Nobody. But within seven months by the grace of God and with the support of Americnas and others Kuwait was liberated and one of the first persons to come to liberated Kuwait to work was the daughter of this same Tiatrist who said to me arrongantly “who want your Kuwait”. During those days I was desperately moving all around Goa to garner support for our movement. In order to make big public propaganda money power was thinned from my pocket. Hence, as a Convenor of Goa Kuwait Solidarity Center which was on forefront in India to create an awakening in India for the cause of Kuwait, I used to go to Tiatro Halls and Mattou to request the directors of the Tiatros and other artistes to allow me to make announcement of our meetings and rallies. But everywhere my request was rejected and at one particular place my request was rebuffed saying “tumchem Kuwait kobar mure, atam anink koslo propaganda korunk ailai?”. I am still waiting for this Tiatrist to come to Kuwait but he is not coming knowing very well what is in store for him.

However, the only Tiatrists who gave me all cooperation in making our announcements publicly were Jose Rod and Anil Kumar. Jose Rod whom I never knew till that date when introduced to me by Patrick de Verna who was acting in Jose Rod’s Tiatro at Mapusa on that day, willingly handed over the Mike to me and gave a green signal to go ahead the way I wanted. So too Anil Kumar in another Tiatro at Mapusa only while other artistes resented this help.

Why to raise the issue of Goa based Tiatrists only? Even most of our own Kuwait based Tiatrists who earned and still earning their sustenance by working in Kuwait have never bothered to support our movement for the cause of Kuwait. If at all these Kuwait based Tiatrists got any prominence in life it is only because of their being in Kuwait. Otherwise who cares them in Goa? Besides, with the exception of 2 or 3, none are real Tiatrists who can swim in the big ocean. If Kuwait based Tiatrists are that powerful then why they take shadow of the troupes regularly coming to Kuwait and successfully performing their shows? Some of our Kuwait based Tiatrists in order to gain limelight need the umbrella of visiting Goan troupes and visiting Tiatrists otherwise they are minus zeroes. And they will remain as such because they are “Beiman” on the very country that gives them their livelihood.

DHL player cripples opponent: NYC Trophy, Kuwait

Kuwait Goans, AVC, Fahaheel Brothers in Semis

-By Gasper Crasto

Kuwait, Jan 15, 2008: An unforgivable, vicious foul by DHL's Elvis Camelo that crippled Kuwait Goan's young playmaker Christovam Colaco with a broken shin was one of the most horrific incidents seen in the 18 year history of the NYC Rolling Trophy football tournament played under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF).

In chilling temperatures as low as 6°C at Salmiya Grounds, Kuwait Goans Association (KGA) led 2-0 in the second half with goals from Andre Dias and Jimmy Goveia. With less than ten minutes left for the final whistle Christovam was moving diagonally with the ball just after the centre circle when DHL's stopper-back Elvis lunged at his legs with both feet. The studs beneath one of Elvis' boots crashed into the flesh of Christovam's shin grounding the player writhing in pain.
Kuwait Goans with officials after the match

Referee Sarto Baptista, one of the most consistent referees had little hesitation in giving marching orders to the DHL defender. "A two footed tackle, anyone will testify, is the most heinous foul in football," quoted Junnifer Rodrigues, member of the Indian referee's body in Kuwait since 1980. Another official said, "The two-footed tackle in football is always illegal but players get away with just a red card...That's the maximum penalty refs can give on the field..."

Christovam Colaco

Player in Hospital

KGA officials who reportedly lodged a complaint with KIFF against the brutal tackle said Christovam was operated at Al-Razi Hospital for a broken leg. "Christovam's football activity is ended in most probability and he is in danger of losing his job also. We are afraid he may never be able to play again. He is crippled with the shin bone broken into two. Doctors have advised him complete bed rest to recuperate once discharged from the hospital. It could be as many as 3 months before he can walk again. For the time, all arrangements are being made to fly the player back to his home in Goa for better care and treatment. Many clubs have shown concern and support towards the player..," disclosed KGA Team Manager Nazi Azavedo.

The official football rules called the 'Laws of the Game' are revised annually by FIFA, the world football governing body. These rules are adopted by KIFF and the Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA), although many football organizations worldwide have their own set of rules.

"...Perhaps the 'dastardly foul' will be discussed by the disciplinary committee of KIFF. Even then, an offence like this may get a maximum 3 match ban. That's not enough..." remarked an unnamed football administrator.

Public Reaction

There were mixed reactions from all circles about the credibility of some teams and players in the aftermath of the fatal injury.

Many spectators called the foul 'intentional', 'horrendous' and viewed concern over such tackles perpetrated by some 'frustrated' players in an expatriate 'working' world where games are played only as pastime.

"There are some players who disgrace their teams and bring the game to disrepute – especially when they are at the losing end," commented a spectator while another bystander added, "There was no need for such a dangerous tackle knowing they (DHL) were down by 2 goals...No, it was not accidental or 50-50...It was deliberate... Everybody saw that!.. Moreover, it is disgusting to note some of DHL's supporters and substitutes instigating their players from the sidelines to play rough."

"Someone needs to sit him down and educate him about the game he plays," said another observer about the DHL defender, "This player should be kicked out of the game by his club and the federation. It is necessary to improve the game's image... Primarily, it should be every club's responsibility to impress upon players not to commit fouls that get them sent off..."

Christovam was undoubtedly the best player on the field with meticulous dribbling and majestic, untiring runs with the ball. He fed his strikers over and over again with precision passes. Kuwait Goans took the lead through his hard work off striker Andre Dias and were never in real danger from then on. KGA goalkeeper Martin Dias, captain Vico D'Souza, Caridade and defender Teotonio too excelled in the match.

Leroy Rodrigues

Leroy hatricks for AVC

In the other quarter-final matche, striker Leroy Rodrigues scored a hatrick to coast AVC Overseas Association to an easy 3-0 victory over C.R.C. Chinchinim. AVC led 2-0 in the first half. The second half was more an ordeal of sorts though AVC held sway and probed persistently for another goal, but lacked that killer finish from their forwards even as Chinchinim looked to be running out of steam and chose to play second fiddle only to come up with occasional raids to release the pressure.

In yet another quarter-final round, Curtorcares United, champions in 2004~05 succumbed to a 4-1 defeat against spirited Fahaheel Brothers. Curtorcares, who scored 11 goals in their last two encounters appeared to have left their scoring boots at home against a middling Fahaheel defense. Strikers Lawrence Furtado and Zico Fernandes could not beat the Fahaheel defense not just because the defenders were outstanding but more so because they did not make that extra effort or showed urgency when it mattered. Muneer and Riyas were the pick of the players for Fahaheel Brothers. Nishad (2 goals), Suleiman and Liyakat Ali scored for Fahaheel. Alex Fernandes reduced the margin for Curtorcares.

In the semifinal line-up on Friday, January 18, 2008, Kuwait Goans will clash with Fahaheel Brothers while Don Bosco Oratory challenge AVC to stake claim for their first final appearance in Kuwait Indian football tournaments.

MONTREANCHI SUBERBAI

MONTREANCHI SUBERBAI.

On 24th of last month I was at Dabolim Airport, standing at the entrance to return to Kuwait. While I was exchanging a few words with my friends who came to reach me to the Airport, suddenly I saw security personnel pushing the people from there rudely as if heaven was falling. Suddenly this attitude of Police caught my attention and I thought Police are driving away the people from there in order to save them from the jaws of the Monster. Then immediately I noticed a Pilot Car from where Prataph Singh Rauji Rane the Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly alighting from the vehicle. He was on that day flying somewhere and entering the Airport thru the same main door as I was entering. For this reason poor slave type of Goa Policemen were doing all the slavery for Rane.

I had one “Maeti” at Mapusa and when I was young I was going to stay there during my annual school holidays. During those days, Portuguse Schools used to grant us holidays after the final exam for about three months, from half March to half June. My “Maeti” used to tell me that on certain days and at certain times she used to close the main door of her house otherwise during the time of Portuguese rule in Goa many of us we never even used to lock our doors even at night time, leave aside just closing during the day time. She said she and even her other neighbours used to close their main doors only to avoid the “Ranes” coming and forcing them to pour pure coconut oil on the pure leather “Chappals” Ranes were wearing. If not, Ranes would threaten them with dire consequences which were very possible because that time Ranes were considered as most hated people because of their brutalities. History records them as brutal people, even in our folk tales their names are mentioned for everything worst. When they put coconut oil on their Chappals, while walking on the road the Chappals used to produce sound, like “chank – chank” which means a warning for the people around there that “be careful, Rano as many times people used to call Rane, is coming. According to further stories Ranes were even raping the ladies forcibly and blaming the innocent Portuguese Pakles. In one word, Ranes were having a very bad image in Mapusa and in other places.

In Mapusa near the Alankar Cinema Hall, there is one Chapel which is called as “Swissachem Kopel”. In the morning on the first day of the Carnival there used to be a parade there organized by the students from “Mocidade de Portuguesa” carrying guns as if they were going to fight a war. At the end of the session, the boys involved in the parade wearing “khaki” uniforms used to fire shots in the air and everyone used to say “Ranneank Marle” as if the parade was organized only to kill the Ranes. Why was it necessary to kill Ranes? Naturally, they must be having a history as very bad people, extortionists, rapists, “goondas & chors”, etc. For this reason, the society then used to label them as very bad people in Goa. In fact, history tells that originally Ranes were not from Goa, they were not from Satari either but they were from Gujarat and settled in Maharastra and finally one clan of theirs I think the clan of bad people settled in Goa, Satari being their citadel, Prataph Singh Rauji Rane may be one of the descendents of this clan of Rane. In the beginning they befriended Portuguese, got lot of benefits for them from the Portuguese and later on like Dayananda Bandodkar betrayed Portuguese with a Judas Kiss. And finally they called themselves Freedom Fighters for Goa to get cheap prominence from the cheap Bharat Serkar.

Ranes are not originally Goans for this reason Prataph Singh Rauji Rane’s affiliation goes to his anchestral place Maharastra. Even other political Ranes the same, for this reason they supported MGP and Marathi. Even Prataph Singh Rauji Rane opted for a non Goan girl to marry. They don’t like Goans but only the “Bastardised” Goans like them and they only support them. Genuine Goans will never support Ranes. Prataph Singh Rauji Rane is become like a “Dada” after being such a long period in the Goa Legislative Assembly holding top positions including that of CM for a longer period. By virtue of these top positions he is entitled for everything free for a long period and that too at the cost of tax payers' money. By being in such a preferential treatment position he has acquired the feeling that he is meant to rule only like a boss. Not only he, even his children are meant to inherit his way of life and positions for this reason he has passed the inheritance of political hierarchy to his son Viswajeet Rane who being such a small “potto” is creating havoc in Goa while Papa Rane is watching silently because Mama Rane is all for Baba Rane.

While as Montris, our Ministers act like Lords, nay, sorry; by dubbing them as Lords I am lowering the image of real Lords in UK. Real Lords are far better but not our artificial Lords who are acting like heavenly Lords. See now, when Luizinho Faleiro was the Chief Minister of Goa, there were so many Government vehicles at his disposal even for his servants to take them to Bazar. When he was going out one Police Jeep and plus two Pilot Cars with top security personnel were escorting his vehicle. Why all these artificial tamasha for his security? Why this artificial “dharbar”? Because Luizinho Faleiro or any of our Montris was on hit list? Now Luisinho Faleiro is no more in the Government and not even in the Goa Legislative Assembly and hence no security for him not only as provided earlier but not even a Gurkha guard is guarding him. Why nobody is killing him now? Why people will kill him? Who wants him? Not even a “KUDDO MUS” is interested in him for this reason nobody is touching him physically now. He is worthless creature now. In view of this, was it necessary for him to ask for such a top security at the cost of tax payers from Goa? People should ask this question. It is a shame for Navelkars to have such a person representing their constituency. Navelim is a place that gave birth to the great Parliamentarian Francis Luis Gomes who inspite of being Goa’s representative in Portuguese Parliament never opted for any security for him then. But Luizinho Faleiro’s security Dharbar blackens the image even of Dr. Gomes. You provide security only for people who are on wanted list for their ill deeds. Even Dayananda Bandodkar roamed all over Goa without any security. Today’s Montris are “chor” and “bamttes”, for this reason they are afraid of their lives. Today’s Montris are showy type because their ancestry lacked any importance in life. They want artificial importance. It is all feelings of psychological elevation.

When Tomazinho Cardoso was the Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, he used to pass thru Candolim Tinto in his Pilot car as if he is the Lord without even looking at others. But who cares for him now and what is his poor status become now!! When he used to come for the Mass on Sundays to Candolim Church many of his “chamchas” used to flock around him before and after the mass but now even a ‘KUDDO MUS” does not look at him when he comes for the Mass. According to my latest information, once, one of his female neighbours came to meet him as she used to meet him earlier when he was a non-entity in Candolim. When he came to know of this female visitor, from inside his room he sent a word to her asking her whether she got an appointment for her to meet him. Oh my God!! What a pride it was? What a “suberbai”!! When I got the news of this pride I was surprised and this pride of his finally led him down from where there is no more chance for him to come up again. Even his involvement in Romi Konkani movement now is a big tamasha to regain his lost foothold in public life. When he was a Speaker he did nothing worthwhile for the cause of Romi Konkani and now what he is doing is only to fool his foolish supporters who got no guts to tell him “to get out now from Romi circle when you did nothing for Romi Konkani when you were in power”. These Montris and Sobapotis and other such officials want only show for them. Such a show was not even made by our former Portugueze rulers. We wanted freedom from Portuguese for what? To wear their robes and act more than what they acted? “Chorank and Bamtteank Goemchem freedom ekdom boreak poddlam and tech Goem kobar kortat. We want “kalcho chalto ani khalto Goykar” to come up in life but when he is on top we don’t want him to act like a Maharaja. We have to destroy these artificial Maharajas otherwise their “suberbai” will destroy us.

Today every politician and minister publicly adores Mahatmah Gandhi but none of the rascals imitate Ghandiji by leading a simple life without artificial pomp. All are rascals, Congressmen are the worst. These rascal Congressmen and Gongress montris are every minute disgracing the fair image of Bapuji by imitating colonialists, chors and bamttes. It is a shame that these "volkot" Congress montris have got elected on the Congress tickets, the Congress that was so much nourished and brought into prominence by Ghandiji thru his simple and truthful life.

Once as a small boy I was in a Ferry Boat coming from Panjim with my brother. In the same Ferry Boat suddenly Governador Vassalo e Silva’s civilian Jeep entered. I did not know whose jeep it was but when the Jeep was parked in the Ferry Boat, nicely Governador Vassalo alighted from his Seat. My brother pointed out to me that “see, he is the Governador of Goa”. I, at that very young age was looking very handsome having fair complexion. Governador came towards me, gave me a broad smile from his broad attractive face and just started moving in the moving Ferry Boat smiling people there. Compared to him, our current Ministers and Speakers are “bloody dirt” and yet the then Governador of Goa did not have Pilot Car nor a fleet of security vehicles like what the showmakers Luizinho Faleiro, Rane, Tomazinho and others had and still having. That day with Governador his security was only one Paklo wearing a short Pant and while Governador was roaming in the Ferry Boat, the security Paklo was still seated on his front seat. During those days Goa Governador and Patriarch of Goa had especial previlleges to travel alone in the Ferry Boat but even then Governador refused this previllege. If Tomazinho Cardoso and Luizinho Faleiro were there, they would act like Salazar because both of them were tasting power first time in their life time. And as a matter of fact, artificial power is very tasty and heady too. For this reason the acquirers of artificial power “Vollenui dhoronant ani Supanui dhoronant”.

Again, once the same Governador came to Candolim and stopped his Jeep at Tinto and alighted from his Jeep and waved at all the people around him. His security Paklo was with him but when one Hindu farmer wearing a Kaxtti whose name was Madhev with a Polio Hand, rushed to the Governador trying to wish him by shaking hand of the Governador, the Governador himself came sprinting to Kaxttikar Madhev and shook his hand very warmly. Would our current Ministers condescend and do the same way as Governador Vassalo did? Would the security personnel of our tin pot ministers allow a Kaxttikar to greet our ministers? People in Goa should know who is better. Colonialists or Freed ones. We wanted freedom for what? To imitate colonialists? No, our colonialists did not do the pride – “suberbai” - as our own brothers did and still doing. The security of our Ministers, their pompous show is nothing but a big tamasha and this tamasha must come to an end. When they are in power they act like big but once they are fallen not even a “kuddo Muss” looks at them and yet they have no shame because they are shameless and only shameless people are surrounding them since our Montris alone can do shameless acts for shameless people.

DHL Kuwait disgrace in hurting Kuwait Goans

In 1979 under the leadership of United Goans Football Centre, Goans in particular and other Indians in general started their first ever competitive soccer tournament at Sour Ground, in Kuwait. After so many years of playing competitive soccer at Sour Ground, this year it is stopped there because some construction work is undergoing there. Hence, from this year our soccer activities are shifted to a place called Salmiya. During the football matches injuries are bound to happen and they actually happen.

In 1980 ace Goan forward Cosme from Arpora, while playing for G.O.A. Maroons at Sour grounds was purposely injured by his opponent. Because of this injury, Cosme had to sleep in the Hospital for some time and then at home with total bedrest, his leg was plastered. In this position he remained out of work for about 2 months but fortunately for Cosme, his manager in the company where he was working was one of the committee members of G.O.A. Maroons Mr. Peter D’Souza (Bosh) whose contribution for the promotion of our soccer was enormous. His name should remain imprinted with golden letters in the history of Goans in Kuwait for providing many jobs for Goan footballers. Good that Cosme was working under Peter otherwise his services would be terminated and he would be out of the job. We are employed in Kuwait not because of our companies and no company is having its soccer team officially like what we have in Goa, e.g. Dempo, Salgaocars etc. Our soccer and playing foot-ball is purely a personal matter between the player and the team that the player is playing. Our employers have nothing to do with our foot-ball.

All teams are not taking care of their players when they are injured. A few years back, while playing for Rising Stars, one of their star forwards was injured and could not even walk properly, he had to make use of crutches to walk. Secondly, good his immediate superiors were sympathetic for closing their eyes for this injury regarding his job. But, unfortunately, none of the Rising Stars Team management personnel came even for a minute to see their injured star at home and enquire about him. It is unfortunate that some teams make use of their players only to promote their teams and team personnel who are hungry for prominence because in Goa, in Bombay, in Mangalore and in other parts of India they never tasted prominence. Back at home in their States they were idiots and these idiots are ruling our affairs in Kuwait. For this reason, in Kuwait we don’t get people of caliber to do things of caliber.

On Friday, 11th of this month, while playing for Kuwait Goan Association in the 18the 18th NYC Rolling Trophy Football tournament organized by Navelim Youth Centre, one of the star players of KGA was injured by their opponents DHL. The injury was so severe that the injured player’s one leg is totally become unfit to play further. He was immediately admitted to Hospital where an emergency operation was conducted to heal his injury. His bone is broken as per the firsthand information. This injured player was a star player in Goa representing Dempo Sports Club. He was a new comer to Kuwait having no very firm job. Because of his injury his all round situation is become precarious. Because of this injury he may be out of job for over 3 months. His employers are not responsible for this injury and hence his job position in danger. Who will support him now? Who will provide him with a new job? If his residence is finished or cancelled, who will help him? Will the DHL player responsible for the disaster of KGA player do something for the injured player? Will DHL top management come to the rescue of the inured player? It is a lesson for the Team Managements and for the players too. We are come here in Kuwait to work and earn our livelihood. Foot-ball is secondary.

According to one source, the KGA player was injured with the intention to finish him by one of their desperate, frustrated players whose earlier record was not very palatable. If this is the case then thorough investigation should be conducted and if necessary Police Case should be filed otherwise KGA management must inform the Hospital sources accordingly and Hospital may call the police for thorough investigation.

Our football field should not be converted into a battlefield to massacre innocent players. Here we are all come for our livelihood which we earn not thru playing foot-ball but by working separately. No body has got right to inure his opponent purposely. Injuring a player purposely is a crime and such professional fouls should be dealt with severity by the soccer management apex body. Our soccer in Kuwait is like a “Budkulleancho Khell”.

By playing our soccer we don’t qualify for World Cup. Our soccer is not even recognized by the local authorities. We are playing only for our own pleasure. And when this is the case, why we should create an Indo-Pak type of war? What is the reward for such victories? If there is any truth in DHL player committing the above foul with an intention to finish his opponent, then KGA must complain to DHL management for allowing such players to represent their team and soil the good image of DHL. In this injury, the name of the player who played the foul play was not much known but the name of DHL is slurred more. The top management of DHL must investigate this case and take corrective steps and if necessary stop supporting the team in their name.

Meantime, who will finance the medical treatment and other requirements of the injured player? Will DHL company help the injured player? Will DHL provide a suitable job for the injured player in their company? Will the guilty player and its team do something for the atonement of their sins? I have seen during my last so many years of involvement in our soccer that some people involved in our soccer are very cruel and rude; their only intention is to win the match by any means. There is too much of revenge and hatred going on in our soccer. This soccer of ours is non-entity outside our circle yet many of our people are fighting like cats and dogs.

Meantime, the job, the residence permit and above all the health of the injured player of KGA are at stake. I understand that his financial position is not good and there is nobody here to look after him when he is discharged from the hospital. It took over three hours to finish his operation which was a major one. It looks not only his soccer future is come to an end but according to one source even his fate in Kuwait is come to an end. Poor boy, he came to Kuwait to make some money and fulfill his life’s commitment. Finally his “Chintnam” became “Sopnam”.

Why and who is responsible for this disaster? Everybody says it is only because of DHL and its ruffians who come to play to deform opponent’s good players. This is not good soccer but this is barbarity which must come to an end. Kuwait Indian Foot-ball Federation and all who are involved in the promotion of KIFF soccer must try to find a solution to this problem. This is not the time to say, oh, it is natural and normal to get injured. Yes, I agree to this but to injure a player purposely is not natural and not normal. Only mentally abnormal people will accept inflicting intentional injuries.

The ruffians on the field and their godfathers and promoters off the field can show their dirty guts on during the soccer matches and for matters concerning soccer. But when we do anything for the cause of Kuwait these rascal hide themselves under the petticoats of their viwes or their mistresses. To support the cause of Kuwait non of the DHL personnel supported us thereby provong how anti-Kuwait they are.

While concluding, I request people of good hearts to pray for the full recovery of the injured people who is in hospital. May God help him to recover from this injury and return to him to his normal former life.

CRICKET'S MADNESS

CRICKKET’S MADNESS.

“THERE ARE TWO TEAMS OUT THERE BUT ONLY ONE TEAM IS PLAYING CRICKET,” said one of the top batsmen (Dom Bradman?) of Australia about 70 years back when the great Dom Bradman was hurt by the bouncer-like bowling of Englishmen Larwood. That was during one of the tests between the host country Australia and the Englsih visitors led by their skipper Jardine. Bodyline bowling was the newest finding at that time, fine tuned into perfection by the fast bowler of England, Larwood. The pace and bouncer of this bowling used by ferocious Larwood was so speedy and fearful that all the topmost and seasoned batsmen of Australia including Bradman had to lie low out of fear for their bodies and return to the pavilion empty handed. Some of them were bodily hurt by the fury of this bowling of Larwood who inculcated fear into the minds and bodies of the Australian batsmen. After finishing the match where England came out triumphantly off the field while the host bruised, one of the top batsmen of Australia uttered the above quoted words. That was the series called Bodyline Bowling series.

Australians were so much angered by this mishap in the test cricket history and their surrendering to Larwood, that the whole nation of Australia rose against England in unison and even demanded to severe the diplomatic relations with England. Even top Government officials, ranking figures and even Cabinet Ministers also echoed in chorus. So much so, Foreign Office of Australia also wrote to Downing Street expressing the anguish and dislike of their people against England created by Larwood’s Bodyline Bowling. However, in usual manner, the British policy maintained its cool and replied back expressing its sorrow over the incidents took place at the Cricket Maidan due to Larwood’s Bodyline bowling but supported the decision of its skipper Jardine to handle the situation on the field and also supported its team management in whatever decision they took in the good interest of the game.

This was the furore the game of Cricket could create in Australia because Cricket is like the staple diet of Australians in general. So much so, because of his fearful bowling Larwood became like a downcast not only in Australia but also in other parts of the cricketing world. His name became synonym with “Devil” and even mothers started putting their small children to sleep fast by uttering the name of Larwood saying “go, go to sleep otherwise Larwood will come and take you away” exactly during the invasion period of Kuwait some mothers used to put their small children to sleep in the name of Devilish Iraqi President Saddam Hussain.

Now, in the recently concluded Test between Australia and India, Indian captain Anil Kumble uttered somewhat similar words when he said “Only one team was playing in the spirit of the game, that’s all I can say”. I am sure Anil Kumble must have read well cricket history and did his inventory of historical events well regarding cricket. Everybody accused the Umpires especially Steve Bucknor for giving wrong decisions against India. In India there was furore in some States where cricket is passion. In all over India it is not a very popular game but surely it gives you more remuneration than any other game played in India. Because of its monetary benefits Cricket is gaining momentum and drawing attention of major section of Indians. The furore in some selected pockets in India turned out to be such that street demonstrations against Umpires were taken, donkeys were named after Bucknor and Australia’s image in India was given a slur. Indian Prime Minister was informed and asked to intervene but the highly educated and highly intellectual Premier of India Dr. Manmohan Singh maintained his cool and remarked that there is in India an appropriate body to handle this issue and this Apex Cricketing Body in India will handle this matter. In this way Dr. Singh imitated the British policy during Bodyline Bowling fiasco to cool the rising tempers of Indians. It is sheer foolishness to raise one's tmper so high just because of one Cricket Test. Are people in India so mad to accept the defeat even though it was not deserving? Is the game of Crciket everything for us to take our life so seriously?

Not only Cricket but for that matter no sporting event and no sporting item and game should be an instrument for the creation of discord amongst us especially between the competing teams. No doubt every team and every competitor wants to win not only for the sake of reward but there is sheer pleasure in winning the game. It is very human in human beings to come out victorious but in the current situation especially when we are so advanced in so many ways compared to our elders to take sporting defeats so seriously is very silly. Besides, not to accept the decisions of the Referees sportingly even though these decisions are wrong is not correct. We have to be real civilized. Cricket looks like lost its former charm when it was called the game of gentlemen. For Harbachan Singh to call Symonds a “Monkey” is his stupidity though he and others have denied saying so but not the Australians and for that matter not by Symonds himself. Good that Symonds kept silent, if he was to be the Frenchman Zidane in the last Soccer World Cup, Symonds the meat eater would have head-butted the puny wheat eater Harbachan and Harbachan in turn would go down flat on the floor.

Because of so many wrong decisions of the Referees, some of the best teams lost their games in the Soccer World Cups. Referees are very human and their ways of looking the events and supervise the games is totally different. Their ways of interpreting the laws of the game are different from others. That does not mean their decisions are always right. Most of the problems on and off the field occurred because of the wrong decisions of the Referees but what one can do at that moment? At that moment his decisionis final and it is like that of a dictator. See, because of questionable decision in 1966 World Cup, Germany lost the final at Wembley against the host England. The crucial goal that England scored was questionable and still it is debated. The ball first hit the inside part of the bar and rebounded down. German goalkeeper and other officials said the rebounded ball did not hit inside the goal but referee said yes. It was a questionable decision but it cost dearly for Germany and yet Germany came out of the field gracefully accepting the defeat and Referees decision sportingly. Compared to the World Cup Final , Cricket Test Match is nothing in all respects.

Another incident of Referees questionable decision in 1986 World Cup at Mexico when the great midfield soccer maestro scored one of his two goals – the first one – thru his hand. He said it was not his hand but the hand of God that scored that goal. Referee could not make out clearly whether Maradona used his head, shoulder or head but he counted out the theory of Maradona using his hand and thus gave in for the goal. Because of this questionable decision, England suffered an ugly defeat. And yet England came out of the field after the match like heroes even congratulating Maradona for his magical display of soccer artistry. They did not go for the neck of the Referee. Who is responsible for all these defeats and mishaps on the playing field? Referees? Umpires? Is there any way to abolish these types of mistakes committed by the Referees and Umpires? But surely there is a way to lessen its effect by accepting the decisions of the Umpires sportingly and play and play the game for the sake of playing to entertain us and all the followers of the games.

Let Cricket still remain the game of gentlemen and not the game of fools. Because of Cricket we should not burn our houses and cut the diplomatic relations with other countries. Let us try to be little mature to face the adverse decisions. By accepting such decisions and defeats heaven would not fall. After all Cricket is played and followed by a few countries and a few people only in the world. It is not the game of Soccer which is followed by the entire world.

Tiatr 'Sir' in Kuwait after almost a year!

Ace comedian Agostinho Temudo will present his much-acclaimed non stop hit Konkani drama ' Sir ' in Kuwait running full swing in Goa at present.

This Tiatr will be held at Hawally AC auditorium on Jan 18, 2008 at 3.30 pm. Agostinho's entire troupe will feature in this presentation which has Goa's splendid cast. In addition super star Jose Rod, the crowd puller Marcus-Laurente-Cajetan de Savordem will entertain Kuwait audience.

Also for the first time on Kuwait Konkani Stage a novelty song will be performed exclusively by Edward Estebeiro!

Comedian Agostinho's acting in Konkani dramas and video films during the last decade and half has acclaimed him one of Konkani stage's top rated natural comedians.
Agostinho came into world-limelight with his maiden VCD 'Mar taka Soddnaka' which became a super-duper hit. His other VCDs 'Sorry Pai', 'Kuroikar' and 'Sunday' were also well accepted.

Agostinho also has 4 audio albums of jokes and songs to his credit - namely: Interview, Good-for-nothing, Suseg, and Honeymoon. Perhaps Agostinho is one of the few Konkani artistes to feature in over 30 other audio albums as well.

In recent years, Agostinho has toured UK and Canada along with some of Goa's top most artistes and has entertained hundreds of thousand audiences. His comedy is highly captivating. He is perhaps one of the few artistes and comedians to stand to the expectations of local public. He has overshadowed most of the visiting stars - whatever drama he performed; whereas a few visiting stars can outclass the charisma and stage presence of Kuwait's multi-talented icons.

Comedian Agustinho is the eldest child among 4 brothers and one sister. He hails from Dongorim, Navelim and works for Rosary College, Navelim.

Lady luck deserts Navelim

By Gasper Crasto, Kuwait

Kuwait City, Jan 7, 2008: Those expecting a tough tussle between hosts Navelim Youth Centre and AVC Overseas Association in keeping with the high importance given to this match were absolutely correct. The game rose to soaring heights as expected by supporters and spectators; both the teams played 'high-tension' football and were locked 1-1 during regulation time. AVC turned out to be the lucky ones in the tie-breaker as Navelim let down their supporters failing in the very first 2 kicks. AVC won 5-3 overall.

NYC Sports Secretary Avelino Dias and one of the Legends of Kuwait Indian Football talking after the match said, "We did everything in the game but were unlucky not to win. We could have been one or two up early on. Anyway, I'am very pleased for the boys, and at the same time a little disappointed at the loss..."

Chances flowed freely from the start with Navelim creating better openings through their midfielders Americo, Duarte Ferrao and Ivo Rodrigues. AVC attacked from the wings while Navelim strikers Cruzedio Rodrigues and Ivo D'Costa dazzled upfront. However, all their tries were either saved by the experienced Alvaro under the AVC bar or kicked away to safety by AVC defenders. Long passes and aerial balls were well intercepted by AVC defence led by stopper back Francis Fernandes and wing back Ronnie.

The relentless pace of the match continued after the break with Navelim pushing forward at every available opportunity while AVC played a more measured game. Navelim players moved in such organized cohesion that it looked imminent they would take the lead. But AVC struck eight minutes into the second half with a fine free-kick by Francis that beat goalkeeper Britto Pereira in the Navelim goal. Navelim re-grouped immediately and created a number of openings on the left flank through Ivo Rodrigues, Americo and Simon Gaunkar and succeeded in drawing level within ten minutes off Cruzedio who put the finishing touch on Sydney's cross by directing a powerful header from close range (1-1).

The later part of the match saw a see-saw battle between the teams with the ball moving frenetically from one end to other. Braulio, Kevin Vaz and Niaso Martin played stellar roles for AVC. NYC fought tirelessly with Duarte Ferrao, Cruzedio and Joaquim Rodrigues playing to their full potential.
AVC Overseas Association
AVC goalkeeper Alvaro denied Navelim atleast three times in the last quarter of play before NYC's Americo missed a sitter and referee Philip Ferrao turned a Nelson's eye to an apparent foul on NYC striker inside the penalty box.

Lady Luck which is a personification of luck that is often involved in gambler's superstitions evaded Navelim in the tie-breaker gamble as the first two spot-kicks were squandered by Navelim's highly experienced Gasper and Simon with Alvaro caught on the wrong foot. AVC were right on target with Joseph Quadros, Francis Fernandes, Ronnie and Nicholas while only Duarte and Sydney succeeded for Navelim.

The 18th edition of the tournament organized by Navelim Youth Centre (NYC) is played under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) and officiated by Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA). The games are played Friday mornings at Salmiya Grounds, Kuwait. The NYC Rolling trophy, perhaps one of the most uniquely sculpt trophies worldwide, was instituted in the year 1993.

In another tough match Fahaheel Bros overcame a stiff challenge by Kerala Challengers to win a marathon sudden death tie-breaker 5-4 from 9 penalties each.
Fahaheel Bros
Kerala Challengers depended mostly on wing attacks but Fahaheel Bros defence was too strong to let anything past them. Fahaheel nearly scored in the fifth minute, but Muneer's header off Riyas' cross went wide. A minute later, Muneer had another chance but his shot was saved by Fahaheel goalkeeper.

Fahaheel Bros scored through Saleih, Abdul Kader, Muneer, Liyakathul and Riyas Babu while only Antony Joseph, Haridas, Mohammed, Majeed Rahman scored for Kerala Challengers. Dixon Benedict's try was saved by Fahaheel Bros goalkeeper to clinch victory in the sudden death.

In the first quarter-final match of the tournament Don Bosco Oratory shocked fancied Bombay Boys 3-2 to make their first appearance in the semis. Don Bosco produced several attacking moves within a space of minutes. The ever impressive Roshan Dias, Ratan Dogra and Jonas Figuiera provided a string of crosses from both flanks. Goalkeeper Adrian Dias came to Bombay Boy's rescue when he blocked a header from Steven Rodrigues following a cross by Custodio Ataide. Roshan, Steven and substitute Deigo D'Souza scored for the winners while Seby Fernandes and Rosario Barbosa scored for Bombay Boys.
