NEW CD "MERRY CHRISTMAS" IN KUWAIT.

NEW CD “MERRY CHRISTMAS” IN KUWAIT.

One of the well known Goan musicians to gain popularity in Kuwait is Aggy Dias from St. Estevao a village known to produce finest musicians of Goa. In the earlier part of this writing, Aggies is seen in the cover of the CD. In fact Aggy’s own father was a very good musician playing blowing instrument. Aggy too inherited lot of musical attributes from his father. Aggy learnt music to read, write and play when he was very young. But he came into limelight when he joined in the Orchestra group of the great music genius Fr. Lourdinho Barreto from Canconna, Goa. Fr. Lourdinho was known to be a genius and according to music experts Fr. Lourdinho was one of the best western musicians in India. Under this wizard Aggy Dias was groomed and blossomed at Panaji Kala Academy where Fr. Lourdinho Barreto was the director of Western Music and where he conducted Goa Symphony Orchestra. Along with this Orchestra, Aggy traveled many parts of India playing 1st Oboe which is a rare instrument. Besides, Oboe, Aggy also mastered the art of playing Organ, Guitar and Clarinet.

I first came in contact with Aggie as a musician when I observed him at Hotel Goan Heritage Calangute during the invasion period of Kuwait in 1990 where he used to play regularly in the Open Air Lawn as a one man band. Aggy’s one man band consists of only one musician that is he himself Mr. Aggy Dias but FOUR musical instruments namely Organ, Guitar, Pedal Drum and Mouth Organ. All these four instruments Aggy used to play there and surely Three at a time simultaneously besides crooning in different languages such as English, Portuguese, Hindi, Spanish and Konkani of course to the fabulous delight of the guests mainly from the West. Many of the tourists and hotel guests told me that time that they were surprised to have in Goa amongst Goans such a fabulous young musician. Some of them even volunteered to take Aggy to Germany and other parts of the West. But Aggy turned down all those beautiful offers. Aggy’s musical skill lies in promoting Goan cultural and traditional musical items and songs. He has to his own credit some especially prepared Goan traditional and folkoric medleys, some of which he already rendered in Kuwait. His presence in Kuwait amongst us is a big asset for the promotion of our musical tradition.

Then Aggy came to Kuwait and since a decade now he is in Kuwait working in the supervisory capacity in one of the Airways at Kuwait International Airport. Though in Goa music was his first priority but in Kuwait job at the Airport is his first priority which gives him better financial remuneration. However, inspite of having a good job at the Airport, he is constantly in touch with music. He teaches Guitar and Organ during his spare time. When we organized some of our shows including Mando Festivals and Mando competitions he played a stellar role not only in writing music but also in playing and guiding.

Recently he achieved a great feat in the art of music when he released his own first musical CD known as “Merry Christmas” where singularly with a singular instrument – Clarinet of small size he played Instrumental Classics which are worth listening. All who love instrumental music especially classics they should not miss the opportunity to listen to this CD. I have shown this CD to some of the top Western musicians thru my personal contacts and they all admired it very much. One of them is the music director in one of the Schools and said “this CD is worth listening and added that this CD should be the pride of Goan musical art”. He further showed his admiration for Goans who according to him are born musician. And Aggy Dias is one of the born musicians who fly the banner of Goans high thru the mode of music. This CD is become very popular amongst the Westerners in Kuwait who know the beauty and greatness of music like our elders who learnt music from early age in the Parochial Schools.

When I listened to this CD I felt proud of musician Aggy Dias who made Goans very rich musically. It is not an easy task to produce such a beautiful CD. It cost him lot of money and efforts too, first to write the music, prepare it and finally to play it singularly. Though it was a one man effort but it looks it was an effort of a group of musicians. Goans especially the music lovers must support Aggy Dias and his Goan musical caliber by purchasing this CD and introducing it to others. In this CD one can see not only Aggy’s talent but in this CD while listening one can see the musical richness of Goans. In this CD one can see the rich musical ancestry of Goans. In this CD one can see Goan musical inheritance. This CD will not become old. It will remain evergreen for all the Christmas seasons.

Mixing and editing was done by Mukesh Chatwal who according to information is a member of the troupe of Remo Fernandes. His efforts are also to be lauded.

I congratulate Aggy Dias for creating something which is unique and it will enrich not only present generation of Goans but also posterity.

"KATRE AND "NADDE".

“KATRE” AND “NADDE”.

In Kuwait open and commercial sex is prohibited, so too Liquour. Hence, human’s tendency goes for something illicit because as per human nature, forbidden fruit is always tasty. Our 1st father and mother Adam and Eve were the victim of this forbidden fruit. In Kuwait amongst the expatriates single males are in greater number than the females. Many of them crave for sex but in the absence of their spouses back at home places they go for anything which is available either in a right way or wrong way. Amongst the sexually perverted community we all know who tops the list and to these people we sarcastically and mockingly call as “Katre” or “Nadde”. Any decent person is keeping a distance from them because for the sake of sex and molestation they will stoop to any ebb. They have no respect for society and no respect for females' dignity. I don’t know how they respect their mothers, daughters, sisters and wives. They are most uncultured and most indecent persons on this planet. For a woman even just to say hello to them is like disgracing her fair image if she is really having fair image.

These “Katre” and “Nadde” make themselves very active on Christmas Day, 1st January Day and Easter Day because on these days our domestics, males and females are having little longer day holidays. After attending the Konkani Masses in Kuwait City Church at 3.30 and 4.30 p.m and after meeting their relatives and other kins they move to the main shopping centre passing thru the Complex where Adidas Stores is located. In this complex some “Katre” and “Nadde” simply come there and make the whole area congested making people to walk and even to crawl very difficult. In the bargain our people coming from the Church get jammed in the packed area inside and outside the Complex. Taking advantage of this packed crowed area, some “Katre” and “Nadde” play mischief with our females who may be our mothers, sisters, daughters, wives and other relatives and when they are trapped in this crowded area, nothing can be done because you neither can move forward nor backward. The only beneficiaries of this chaotic situation are the molesters and sexually perverted rascals who got no business to be there. They first loiter near the Church area and mark the ladies of their choice and then follow them as their prey. Those who are not Catholic and Christians have no business to frequent unnecessarily near the Church. By moving around Church Area these non – Christian are not only committing a sin but bringing disgrace on their own religion. We must know to respect religious feelings of others. Even if near the Church area there are some bad elements, good elements should not associate with them.

After crossing this Adidas Complex, our people after the Mass go for shopping by crossing the road, which is opposite the General Post Office, near Salhiya Tower. The whole and the worst trouble starts near the Bus Stop next to the Pharmacy where there is a narrow lane where again another gang of “Katre” and “Nadde” wait for their chances prowling on our innocent females who again may be our mothers, wives, sisters, daughters and other relatives. They pass thru that narrow lane with good intention but rascals are waiting in the “lutt” – crowded lane - to hug, to catch, to press, to embrace, to kiss and do all sexually related nonsensical acts which is unbearable for our decent females. These female victims are mainly Christian and mostly Catholics, many of them from Goa, Mangalore and Phillipines. That area at around 4 – 6 p.m is so congested that one cannot even stand there and yet our women are taking risk to pass by that lane either knowingly or unknowingly. And when they get caught in this situation – “lutt” (congestion) they shout, scream and cry loudly for help. Last Tuesday on Christmas Day I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears the ugly scenes there and unbearable screaming.

To avoid this situation in future, especially on coming 1st January 2008, I feel our Church authorities in the Church must advise our females not to use the above routes to pass. Instead they should take some other route. When the “Katre” and “Nadde” act vulgar with our females it is very disturbing and humiliating not only for our women but also for their compatriots, relatives and co-religionists. The Ushers in the Church must also make a point to tell the congregation from inside and outside the Church compound to be careful. The priests in their sermons must also advise our people to be very careful.

I also request Pastors in the Evangelical Church to come forward especially Sister Lata and her congregation to advise the people accordingly, So too Bro. Vincente where there are many Goans and Mangaloreans attending their services. I have seen and experienced the Godly power in Sister Lata and Bros. Vincente to convince the people to act in right direction, of course in the name of Jesus Christ because they are also the promoters of Christ’s message. And as a matter of fact, their voice is more audible and more curative for this reason people flock there in good number on every Saturday and Wednesday. It is time for all of us to unite our efforts to safeguard not only the honour of our females but also the honour of our Christian Religion whichever denomination we may belong to but we are all followers of Christ. To follow the path of Christ one need not be the member of any particular congregation. The “Katre” and “Nadde” are not Christians but they target our Christian females only because they know they are very ignorant and innocent. Hence, it is the duty of the leaders of Christians to educate our ignorant females.

BENAZIR BHUTTO'S ASSASSINATION.

It was shocking, it was disgusting and it was inhuman to know the assassination of Benazir Bhutto yesterday 27th of this month at 5.30 p.m. in Pakistan. She as killed not by outsiders but by the insiders from her own country and professing the same religion as she professed. The assassins were pushed into this mad act by the very people giving allegiance to the same religion as that of Benazir Bhutto and those who kill innocent or for that matter any human being are ungodly people, they are traitors of the teachings of their own religion. They deserve no mercy from God for committing such heinous crimes and their ultimate destination is not Heaven but HELL. By killing people in the name of religious ideology is the worst sin a man can commit. God has not entrusted any of us to kill others. We as children of God have no right to kill other human beings. Those people who kill others in the name of their religious belief must be cured of the wrong notion of their religion. No religion tells to kill others. The religious fundamentalists and fanatics must be told in the strongest terms that by killing others they are doing disservice to their own religion and for this reason the followers of their religions especially the innocent ones are coming under scanner all over the world.

Benazir Bhutto shot into limelight in India and Pakistan too when she first time visited India along with her Prime Minister father the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for Simla Conference soon after the end of Bangladesh liberation war in 1971. She was at that time in her teens around 19-20 year old, a very attractive and charming girl, attracting attention of all the young males. Even Indira Gandhi during that summit was deeply impressed by her looks, presentation and her way of talking. The Simla Conference gained major booster partly because of her presence with her father who of course monitored her each and every move clandestinely. He did not want his daughter to become too common amongst Indians who were devoting much more attention on her than on the Conference. During those few days Indian press was full of stories and photographs of her in the front pages. Simla Conference gained the required result but Benazir Bhutto’s presence won the hearts of Indians for Pakistan and Pakistanis. Some even suggested to her father to appoint her as Pakistani Ambassador to India to foment better relationship with India. Some Indian bachelors even proposed to marry her. But Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was an intellectual giant and a prophetic man too. He already made his prophecy that Benazir Bhutto his daughter is destined for much higher position and that is to rule Pakistan. And his prophecy finally came to reality but unfortunately after his death.

Having been educated in the West, her natural choice will surely go for Democracy and Freedom. Throughout her life she worked and fought for democracy and in Pakistan and anywhere in the Islamic country, democracy is the only solution. People in Islamic countries are suppressed from democracy and one day people will revolt to get it. Freedom and democracy are the inborn qualities in human beings. Benazir fought for democracy till her last breath. She was the first Muslim woman in the modern Islamic history to rule the country as a Prime Minister. Once during our meeting in the "Writers Guild" in Kuwait, while discussing a very hot topic on Islam and democracy, one top Kuwait intellectual lady said “our religion does not permit women to rule the country”. Immediately in the midst of august body of intellectuals and learned dignitaries including diplomats, I in my normal challenging manner asked her “Madam, what sort of Islam you are citing? Muslim Benazir Bhutto in Islamic Pakistan has already created a history by getting elected by the Muslim voters to the post of Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Was it wrong or was it an anti-Islamic act?”. She had no answer and everyone in the meeting was stunned.

I always admired her graceful posture. Once when as Premier of India, Rajiv Gandhi went to Pakistan to attend one summit there. While Benazir, also as a premier of Pakistan, escorting Rajiv Gandhi, asked him softly and very romantically “Can We Go?”. Nodded Rajiv Gandhi and they both move into the Conference Hall like boyfriend and girlfriend. Both were in their youthful and glamorous looks, fabulously dressed and very attractive. I can still remember that particular scene of both of them walking closely exchanging some lively pleasantries as if they were newly engaged to marry. During her rule the relationship between Pakistan and India was in positive mood and she was the right choice to better the good neighbourly relations between the two neighbours. In Pakistan, only the members of Bhutto family were in position to create a strong bridge of friendship between India and Pakistan. Other leaders are fanatically conscious; they surrender to the religious fanatics who killed Benazir. The religious fanatics blamed Benazir Bhutto for leaning towards West and US. But mind you, without the blessing and support of West Pakistan would have been in extinction since long. US are supporting Pakistan to create a front to contain India’s hegemonistic attitude. Pakistan built its nuclear weapon with the silent nod of US because US wanted to neutralize India’s “dadagiri” in the subcontinent. In order to stop Iran from producing its nuclear weapon, US to protect the interest of its ally Israel is bringing heaven from the sky but for Pakistan US did nothing of that sort of noise.

It is a pity that the entire political structure of Bhutto family is finished. One brother of Benazir was found dead in a mysterious circumstances in France while the other was killed before the nose of Benazir. Some doubted that he was killed by Benazir’s husband and the whole matter was hushed up. Her father was killed by sending him to the gallows by Gen Zia who himself was killed in a mysterious plane crash in his own country. Sword beget sword. This is the system working in Pakistan and many of the Islamic countries.

May God give courage to her three children to bear this colossal loss. They are all alive and growing up. When their tim comes they will surely bethe torch bearer of Bhuttos. Her husband Asif Zardari was very much responsible for tarnishing her image by involving in bribery scandal. Most of the top leaders got their image tarnished not because they are bad but their spouses, children, brothers and other relatives are bad. That she would be assassinated was already hinted when she got a wake up call on the very day she returned from Dubai two months back when her motorcade in Karachi was bombed in which around 80 people were kikked. Those who decide to take drastic action will never stop. When they wanted to kill Mahatmah Gandhi they did not wait but went ahead with their plan and thus liquidated Mahatma Gandhi. When they wanted to finish President John F. Kennedy, they finished their mission inspite of topmost security apparatus available in US to prevent this assassination. The same thing happened to Civil Rightist Martin Luther King, so too Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and so many others. Benazir’s killing was facilitated more easily by the security lax for which the major blame should fall on the shoulders of President Parvez Musharraf and other security agencies in Pakistan. Also on US for giving her green signal to go back to Pakistan from long term exile. In her death, Pakistan is in turmoil. She was not only a strong opposition leader in Pakistan but a Prime Minister in waiting. Her party PPP which was formed by her late father enjoyed more support than any other party in Pakistan. She was synonym with Pakistan and as such she was the darling of Pakistanis. She was the only leader in Pakisan to keep the Pakistanis closely knit. She was the only leader having metropolitan acceptance and not regional and parochial. After her late father, Pakistan has never produced a popular leader as she was and probably in future such a populous leader will never come into existence in Pakistan. In the absence of such a populous leader there is a possibility for Pakistan to come into disintegration because the whole of Pakistan is in chaotic hands where religious extremists are raising their heads high. These extremists and terrorists are not interested in the unity of Pakistan but in their own religious ideology which is never going to be accepted by the entire Pakistan. Parvez Musharraf is in big problem now and he may not be able to control the chaotic situation there. It is time for him to abdicate his seat but will US allow him to do so? I doubt, because he is the only link between the West and Pakistan which is having nuclear weapons in its armoury and it should not fall into the hands of rogues. Only Musharraf can prevent it however much I and you may deslike him for being the murdered of democracy in Pakistan.

I still remember on the eve of Benazir father’s hanging, she was given an access to meet her father waiting in the death row. When the door of the prison cell was opened, she not only ran to her father but sprinted like Ben Johnson and slipped into his arms sobbing and crying loudly like a small child. That was the last embrace father and daughter had. And this is the last sentence of this epitaph of mine on the late Benazir Bhutto whose soul may have eternal rest in Heaven.

Bastards assasinate Benazir Bhutto

Kuwait - 27.12.2007 Pakistani Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was killed in a gun and bomb attack after a rally in the city of Rawalpindi this afternoon.
Benazir Bhutto's extraordinary career

Benazir Bhutto was once feted at home and abroad as a symbol of modernity and democracy, but she has since fought a long battle against corruption allegations.

Ms Bhutto has had a volatile political career

Like the Nehru-Gandhi family in India, the Bhuttos of Pakistan are one of the world's most famous political dynasties. Benazir's father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was prime minister of Pakistan in the early 1970s.

His government was one of the few in the 30 years following independence that was not run by the army.

Born in 1953 in the province of Sindh and educated at Harvard and Oxford, Ms Bhutto gained credibility from her father's high profile, even though she was initially a reluctant convert to politics.

She has twice been prime minister of Pakistan, from 1988 to 1990, and from 1993 to 1996.

Stubbornness

On both occasions she was dismissed from office by the president for alleged corruption.

The dismissals typified her volatile political career, which has been characterised by numerous peaks and troughs. At the height of her popularity - shortly after her first election - she was one of the most high-profile women leaders in the world.

Young and glamorous, she successfully portrayed herself as a refreshing contrast to the overwhelmingly male-dominated political establishment.

But after her second fall from power, her name came to be seen by some as synonymous with corruption and bad governance.

Husband Asif Zardari has faced numerous corruption charges

The determination and stubbornness for which Ms Bhutto is renowned was first seen after her father was imprisoned and charged with murder by Gen Zia ul-Haq in 1977, following a military coup. Two years later he was executed.

Ms Bhutto was imprisoned just before her father's death and spent most of her five-year jail term in solitary confinement. She described the conditions as extremely hard.

During stints out of prison for medical treatment, Ms Bhutto set up a Pakistan People's Party office in London, and began a campaign against General Zia.

She returned to Pakistan in 1986, attracting huge crowds to political rallies.

After Gen Zia died in an explosion on board his aircraft in 1988, she became one of the first democratically elected female prime ministers in an Islamic country.

Corruption charges

During both her stints in power, the role of Ms Bhutto's husband, Asif Zardari, proved highly controversial.

He played a prominent role in both her administrations, and has been accused by various Pakistani governments of stealing millions of dollars from state coffers - charges he and his wife deny.

It is alleged that this money has been stashed in secret accounts throughout Europe.

Many commentators argued that Ms Bhutto's downfall was accelerated by the alleged greed of her husband.

None of about 18 corruption and criminal cases against Mr Zardari has been proved in court after 10 years. But he served at least eight years in jail.

He was freed on bail in 2004 amid accusations that the charges against him were weak and going nowhere.

Ms Bhutto has also steadfastly denied all the corruption charges against her, which she says are politically motivated.

Until an amnesty in October 2007, she faced corruption charges in at least five cases, all without a conviction.

A deal may be in the offing with the Pakistani president

She was convicted in 1999 for failing to appear in court, but the Supreme Court has since overturned that judgement.
Soon after the conviction, audiotapes of conversations between the judge and some top aides of then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were discovered that showed that the judge had been under pressure to convict.

Ms Bhutto left Pakistan in 1999 to live abroad shortly after her conviction. Questions about her and her husband's wealth have continued to dog her.

She is also appealing against a conviction in the Swiss courts for money-laundering.

During her years outside Pakistan, Ms Bhutto lived with her three children in Dubai, where she was joined by her husband after he was freed in 2004.

She has been a regular visitor to Western capitals, delivering lectures at universities and think-tanks and meeting government officials.

Army mistrust

Ms Bhutto returned to Pakistan on 18 October after President Musharraf signed into law an ordinance granting her and others an amnesty from corruption charges.

Observers say the military regime sees her as a natural ally in its efforts to isolate religious forces and their surrogate militants.

She declined a government offer to let her party head the national government after the 2002 elections, in which the party received the largest number of votes.

But during the past year or so, she has emerged as a strong contender for power.

Some in Pakistan believe her recent secret talks with the military regime amount to betrayal of the democratic forces as these talks have shored up President Musharraf's grip on the country.

Others say such talks indicate that the military may at long last be getting over its decades-old mistrust of Ms Bhutto and her party, which is a good omen for democracy.

Western powers see in her a popular leader with liberal leanings who could bring much needed legitimacy to Mr Musharraf's role in the "war against terror".

Unhappy family

Benazir Bhutto is the last remaining bearer of her late father's political legacy.

Her brother, Murtaza - who was once expected to play an increasingly important role as a party leader - fled to the then-communist Afghanistan after his father's fall.

From there, and various Middle Eastern capitals, he mounted a campaign against Pakistan's military government with a militant group called al-Zulfikar.

He won elections from exile in 1993 and became a provincial legislator, returning home soon afterwards, only to be shot dead under mysterious circumstances in 1996.

Benazir's other brother, Shahnawaz - also politically active but in less violent ways than Murtaza - was found dead in his French Riviera apartment in 1985.

GOA Maroons knocked out in first round: NYC Rolling Trophy

Curtorcares United

18th Navelim Y.C Rolling Trophy
Curtorcares United stun United Friends

- News by Gasper Crasto www.goa-world.com

Kuwait: Curtorcares United stunned star studded United Friends Club (UFC) 4-0 on a cold and windy Friday morning while formidable GOA Maroons lost out to Kuwait Goan Association (KGA) 2-0 in the 18th Edition of NYC Rolling Trophy tournament being played at Salmiya Grounds, Salmiya.

NYC Rolling Trophy played under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) is in the 18th year of its edition. The matches are officiated by Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA).

Curtorcares players praying before entering the field

It proved stars don’t rule the game in Kuwait Indian football as UFC’s ageing ‘star footballers’ such as Sarto Baptista, Phillip Ferrao, Jose Rod, Agnelo Fernandes (Mam) and evergreen goalkeeper Olavo Monteiro succumbed to a toothless defeat at the hands of Curtorcares whom they had defeated 3-1 last year in the same tournament. Young Zico Fernandes was the live-wire for Curtorcares upfront. He broke into the UFC defense repeatedly and scored 2 quick goals while Lawrence Furtado and substitute Padekaran accounted for the other two.

an aerial duel between UFC and Curtorcares at Salmiya Grounds

Roshan D’Souza was the rock in Curtorcares’ defence and also helped create chances as UFC dominated major part of the game after the first goal.

Formidable GOA Maroons bow out in first round

It is not many times that the four-time champions GOA Maroons have bow out of any tournament in Kuwait in the first round. In temperatures as low as 12° C, Maroons started with a quick passing game and put Kuwait Goan Association (KGA) under pressure right from the start. But despite Maroons’ control of possession KGA’s Vico D’Souza, Christo Colaco and Russel Rodrigues looked dangerous with their solo runs. Andre Dias gave the much needed lead for KGA and added another one to the score to clinch the match.

Maroons’ Jerry D’Souza who came in place of Deryk Fernandes showed lot of eagerness to equalize. However, KGA were able to use the runs of bubbling Zelito Cardozo and Jimmy Goveia to relieve pressure on their defense.

Referee Richard Dixon gave marching orders to KGA’s Remedio Fernandes for a second consecutive offence.

One of the strongest teams in the tournament, KGA will now meet Santos Football Club in the next round. The forthcoming game will gather high interest in the team.
Veterans beat Malayalee Arts and Sports

In another match, spirited Veterans Sports Club put it past Malayalee Arts and Sports to advance to the next phase. Both teams appeared equal throughout the match although Veterans were steadier in front of the goal and deservedly won the game. Striker Robin Fernandes and Jeffrey Rodrigues scored for the winners.

Malayalee Arts and Sports played their hearts to get back into the game with outstanding play by Mujeeb, Abdul Rehman, Niyas and Firoz. The youngsters excelled throughout the match.

Don Bosco show the door to debutants Goan Entertainment Club

A goal each from the boots of Custodio Ataide, Ratan Dogra and Steven Rodrigues made the scoreboard look decent for Don Bosco Oratory as they showed the door to debutants Goan Entertainment Club with 3 goals to nil.

Early pressure failed to produce shots on target at either ends. Goan Entertainment used all the tactics in the book to defend their citadel. Don Bosco shot into the lead through a combined move by Victor D’Costa, Sainath and Roshan Dias.

Enthusiasm seems to be the hallmark of the young Don Bosco players as they stake their claim to win another match.

INDIAN AIRLINES AND ITS MISCHIEF.

These days many Goans go to Goa on vacation flying by Indian Airlines. Somehow or the other IA is not having very good opinion of its service and punctuality. Yet having no choice Goans travel by IA twice a week even though the fare for Kuwait to Goa is higher than the fare for Malyalis and Tamilians traveling in the same flight from Kuwait to Kerala and Madras. Goans feel they are discriminated by charging them more fare. I hope Eduardo Faleiro the NRI Commissioner will read my lines. He was the first person to travel in this direct inaugural flight when he came to inaugurate this flight. Along with him Dr.Wilfred Desouza and one MP Mr. Aslam who was former Indian Hockey Olympian. A big party was held at Hotel Meridien where Faleiro spoke highly of IA and told Goans IA will serve Goans well. But in reality does IA serve Goans well? If it is so then why more charges for the passengers from Dabolim to Kuwait and vice versa? If it is so then why no proper service and appropriate facilities even on board at times?

The major problem for the travelers in this flight is baggage allowance. Many of our people are unaware of the exact number of kilos IA allows per ticket. During peak season it is 30 while during the lean season it can reach up to 40 and + but there is no exact confirmation from the authorities concerned. By not making its policy very clear, IA keeps everyone guessing. Many times passengers traveling by this flight bring more than 30 kilos but suddenly they get a rude shock at the weight in counter when the counter clerk tells them to pay for the excess luggage. Last week I went to reach one passenger who was traveling to Goa with an accompanied luggage of 32 kilos. The counterman allowed 30 kilos free as luggage allowance but charged for the 31st and 32nd kilos. When questioned why you are charging for 2 kilos, he replied “I cannot allow more then 30 kilos” and hence he wrote the “chalan” for KD 7.000. That means for every extra kilo above 30 kilos IA charges KD 3.500. But when the same passenger brought to the notice of the counter clerk that at the next counter the passenger flying to Kerala was allowed 38 kilos without charging any extra. What sort of equality IA performing by discriminating against Goans? It was not the question of KD 7.000 or charges for 2 kilos extra but it was a question of partiality IA shows to certain passengers and harasses others unnecessarily. It was a question why IA is not making its intention very clear so that passengers in advance know their weight allowance. It is a disgrace on IA and its management to practice such injustice.

I cannot understand what is the exact policy of IA at their counters in Kuwait. It looks to me every counterman is applying his own rule and there is nobody to supervise their decisions. In view of this faulty policy of IA, I advise my Goan brothers and sisters traveling to Dabolim by IA not to carry more than 30 kilos thinking they will escape from paying for the excess baggage. It is better to stick to 30 kilos unless one is ready to pay KD 3.500 per every extra kilo. There is no justice and no compassion at the IA counter unless you have some “wasta” which means influence in Arabic. Goans who are unaware of the policy of IA should be very careful.

Yet another instance of luggage harassment IA does was brought to my notice recently by one passenger flying by this flight from Kuwait to Goa. According to this passenger from Navelim he purchased some items at Duty Free shop at Kuwait Airport but before entering the flight, to his disappointment and shock, all his purchased items at Duty Free shop were weighed and accordingly he was charged. It was not he alone who faced this harassment but other passengers too. Weight charging for such items is something news to many of us but with IA anything can happen because IA flying from Kuwait to Goa and vice versa is the most unreliable flight not only in maintaining its flight schedule but in all respects. This is the history of IA direct flight. The NRI Commissioner who is paid by tax payers’ money for his salary and other allowances must take note of this. All the “chamchas” of NRI Commissioner in Kuwait some of them enjoying complimentary from IA must also know this.

‘Bekar Louddi’ a lively Comedy Video

-Daniel F. de Souza, Goa

Comedian Selvy has virtually scored an ace with the release of his first comedy film ‘Bekar Louddi’. This fast paced comedy video is marketed under the banner of Cat Video and is available at all the leading music stores in Goa. Those who have been closely following the performance of comedian Selvy over the period must have surely noticed that he has moulded into a fine comedy artist in recent times. The richness of his acting talents has now surfaced in full flow. This comedy video is a confirmation of his creativity with writing comedy script.

‘Bekar Louddi’ is a comedy highlighting the pursuits of an unemployed youth (comedian Selvy) eager to get married an lead his life, unmindful of the consequences that may follow. But, the problem is, he does not have a steady job and lives with a care a damn attitude. He is very playful like a school going kid and has a deadly liking for any kind of sports. Sports and games take a first precedent in his life over any other things. The youth is mired with problems from day one of his marriage. While he is on his way to the church for his nuptials his attention is drawn to the young boys on the road side playing marbles and he is automatically drawn to the game. Later on he is called upon to take part in a penalty shoot out, crazy for football that he is, he obliges. It is fun watching a young man dressed in his wedding suit manning the goal post in a penalty shot out. The bride (comedian Janet) in the meantime is left high and dry at the church waiting for her groom to arrive. The events that follow next are even more hilarious. The bride riding a cycle along the village roads dressed in her wedding gown and searching for her groom is not only funny but very well captured on frame.

Comedian Janet ably supports comedian Selvy as his unfortunate wife in this video and is part of all his pursuits and adventures in a laugh a minute riot. The comedy in this video is further enhanced with the presence of comedian Agostinho Temudo who plays the character of a beggar and is the President of the All Goa beggars Union. He leads a large group of beggars who go around in an organized manner. This is an entirely new breed of beggars who go about their job at strategic locations in a dignified and hi-fi manner begging for alms totally suited and booted. Some of the comedy sequences shown with respect to begging and the tactics they employ to earn their daily bread are well depicted. Comedian Agostinho with his natural flair for sleek comedy ably supported by the other comedians is a treat to watch.

A couple of comedy sequences involving comedian Selvy and comedian Agostinho evokes natural laughter like the one when Selvy sharpens the daggers and Agostinho misunderstands the purpose behind such an action. Then there is the incidence of the simple comedy sequence connected to a supposedly mobile conversation. But the final outcome is good and is a proof of Selvy’s fertile mind in creating comedy. Comedian Janet has given her best in her role as a young bride and wife and is natural in every sequence. So is comedian Selvy, who has taken good care to depict the character in all its finer aspects. The day to day adventures of this young couple and the manner in which they go about their married life is what provides the basis for comedy.

The videography and editing is done by Joywin Fernades and Lenoy Gomendes has provided the music and background music.

Manfa Music has recently compiled a audio CD ‘ Manfa’s Golden Hits’ Vol 1. The audio album has 16 selected tracks comprising of 12 solos, one trio and three duets which are all hits. Some of the popular singers compiled in this audio album are Trio Kings (Joaquim-Jr.Rod-Anthony), Goa’s nightingale Lorna, M.Boyer, Antonette Mendes, Mohana and Alex, Jr. Rod, Sucorina, Ophelia & Romeo, H. Briton, Sharon, Osvi Viegas, Bab Peter, Babli, Betty Naz and Nephie Rod.

‘Master plan’ a trio by the trio kings is the first track on the album followed by a sentimental solo ‘Nimanno Adeus’ (lyrics Sylvester) sung by Lorna in which she pays rich tributes to her mentor the late Chris Perry. M. Boyer’s ‘Gulfakarancho Power’ a comedy solo adds glamour while ‘Kantteachi Vatt’ (lyrics H. Briton) sung by Antonette Mendes brings out her sweet sentimental voice. Bab Peter’s all time hit ‘Magnnem’ finds a place in this album followed by a very old duet ‘Ghovachem Ghor’ by Mohana & Alex.

‘Satvo Sacrament’ a very popular track by versatile Jr. Rod makes good listening with meaningful lyrics and good music backup. Comedian Sucorina adds luster to the album with her voice singing a comedy solo ‘Dil Mera Thoda na’ (lyrics H.Britona) to a famous Hindi melody. Versatile solo singer Jose Rod’s presence is strongly felt in his solo ‘Magnnem’ (lyrics Katty de Navelim). Tragedy Queen Ophelia sings a sensational duet ‘Besanv Zaem’ (lyrics Bab Peter) together with late Romeo Mendes. Foot-taping music follows next with H.Briton belting out a comedy solo ‘ Love-aria’ (own lyrics) . Highlighting the dangers of AIDS in her sentimental solo with the same name is silky voiced Sharon (lyrics Osvi Viegas).

‘Divors by Osvi Viegas, Jivitachi Chavi (lyrics Bab Peter) sung by Babli, Isabela a duet by Betty Naz & H. Briton (lyrics H.Briton) and as solo Ghorkar by Nephie Rod’ are the final tracks on the audio album which are all worth listening and adding to the collection. The last track on the CD album is once again focused on the dangers of AIDS and has some thought provoking lyrics, rendered beautifully by the Mumbai based singer Nephie Rod.

The musical score provided for the various tracks on the album is by Maestro Josinho, Tony Dias, Babush, and Agostinho Da Cruz. The album is priced at Rs. 150/- and is available at all leading music stores across the state. Go for it and add it to your collection of Konkani music.

GOEM ATAM UTTLAM

GOEM ATAM UTTLAM

Gone were the days when Goans were called “susegad”. In 1973 in my locality when Sinquerim Taj ignored the locals in getting the job at Taj Hotel, I and my colleague Alex Pinto revolted against the lop sided policy of Taj and challenged the entry of GRD Tata at Sinquerim when he was first time visiting Goa, demanding from him jobs for the locals and Goans only at his Taj Hotel. All the local “chamchas” of Taj showed their opposition to me but as usual I did not care for their opposition. Thru this revolt of mine the local people and Goans got preferential treatment in the jobs at the Taj. Then I came to Kuwait by cutting short my education at the Post Graduate Centre in Panaji. Since then our locality is not having a dedicated leader to fight for our rights. If I were in Goa permanently the Ship “River Princess” at Candolim Beach would not remain there till now. With the help of like minded people who are plenty in my locality and in Goa now, I would do something because “Goem Uttlam”.

Dayananda Bandodkar once told me that Konkani has no value in Goa, hence support Marathi as per the manifesto of MGP. Bandodkar died, his daughter came with the same slogan against Konkani. I came to Kuwait, started Konkani movement, liaised with our Konkani supporters in Goa, from Kuwait collected funds for the cause of Konkani, gave an assurance to our people in Goa that financially we will stand by you in your physical fight for the cause of Goa. Our brothers and sisters in eighties started a movement first under Novem Goem Pratishthan and later under KPA for the victory of Konkani. “Goem Uttlem”, public rallies and public meetings were organized in a big scale in Panjim, I went to Goa on vacation and participated in the rallies and meetings, received lathis from Prataphsingh Rauji Rane’s Ghantti police, hunger strike was conducted and there again I took part in it at Azad Maidan. “Goem Uttlem”. Final showdown was when our 6 Agxikar brothers laid down their precious lives for the cause of Konkani headed by youthful Floriano Vaz from Margao, Cogol who being the first Konkani martyr was shot dead from close range by the Ghantti Hawaldar of Rane for raising the voice of Konkani. “Goem Uttlem”. “Goem Bandh” movement was started and finally Konkani was recognized and because Konkani was recognized Goa got statehood. Why this victory happened? Because “Goa Atam Uttlem”.

In between anti-Nylon 6.6 Factory movement started in Kerim Goa. People joined together, faced the brutalities of police, one youth was killed in the firing by the Goa police. But people of Goa did not care. They were prepared to face more deaths to close this Factory. Finally the Nylon Factory project was shelved. Why? Because of people’s movement against it. Why this happened? Because “Goa Atam Uttlem”.

Two years back Town and Country Planning (TCP) Ordinance of Babush Monsurate was vehemently opposed by the people of Goa under the leadership of Mummy Victoria Fernandes. Public Rallies and public meetings were organized all over Goa. I was in Goa on my annual vacation. I took part in it, volunteered for arrest in Panjim near Customs House. Then on request from the movement makers I adressed the public meetings in 3 places including at Mapusa Bus Stand and received lot of support and encouragement from the public. Finally Monsurate and Goa Government surrendered and shelved this anti Goan plan TCP Ordinance. Why it happened? Because people of Goa opposed it. Why people opposed it? Because “Goem Atam Uttlem”.

Then under the leadership of Dr. Rebello another heavy movement was organized to oppose the big Master Plan for Goa initiated by Goa Government to degoanise Goa and to sell it to non-Goans. Again public meetings and rallies were organized. Patricia Pinto a young lady from Panjim took a very leading role. Finally this Plan too was shelved. Why? Because Goan masses opposed it. Why they opposed it? Because “Goa Atam Uttlem”.

SEZ movement is the latest movement in Goa against the interest of Goans. Everybody in Goa is opposing it because it is not good for Goa. There are committees and organizations formed all over Goa to oppose this SEZ. People in Goa are organizing meetings and rallies in Goa. It is gaining a momentum to convert it into a mass movement. Why people in big number opposing it? Because it is against the interest of Goans. Who are supporting this anti-SEZ movement? All Goans. Why they are supporting it? Because “Goem Atam Uttlam”. The Goans who are fighting against this SEZ will never remain silent till SEZ is totally scrapped as they resolved on 14th of this month in the big public meeting held at Lohia Maidan Margao. “Goem Atam Uttlam”. Unlike earlier days, Goem Atam Susegad Nidonk Na. Goem Atam Uttlam.

A few days back at Dona Paula under the leadership of local MLA Babush Monsurate work for the construction of IT Habitat initiated by Dayananda Narvenkar with the blessing of Goa Government was stopped. Police force was called and there were some clashes. Monsurate remained firm, so too his supporters. Narvenkar said in this IT Habitat lot of jobs will be created for Goans. But I doubt Narvenkar’s assertion. Narvenkar in his true colours will surely implement the sin of Narvenkarism which also means selling the jobs to the highest bidder whether he is from Goa or outside Goa. Nothing works in Goa without bribes. People must ask Narvenkar now only the sale price of every job and every segmet of the place there. How many jobs in this IT Habitat will be created and what will be the criteria of selection. How many jobs will be allocated to Goans and what guarantee is there Goans will be given preferential treatment in the jobs? I have no doubt in Narvenkar doing justice for Goans. He will do justice only for his personal monetary gains. Do not trust him. It is better to put an end to this Project under Narvenkar because it will give jobs to outsiders only thereby increasing number of non-Goans in Goa thus further helping the degoanisation process of Goa Men like Rane, Narvenkar and others have more love for non-Goans for this reason they got married to non-Goans. I have no trust in such people to show their love for Goans. I have a strong hope that people in Taleigao will teach a very good lesson to Narvenkar and to teach this lesson to Narvenkar I hope the like minded people from other parts of Goa must be ready to join Taleigaokars in their struggle. Let this anti-IT Habitat movement be the movement of entire Goa. I am sure people’s movement will succeed in stopping this Narvenkar Habitat because ‘GOEM ATAM UTTLAM”.

Secondly I have very little hope in Babush Monsurate that he will remain faithful to this good cause. History tells us that Babush Monsurate is the most selfish politician, he is more interested in his personal gains than in Goa and Goans. People rallying behind him must ask him whether he will remain dedicated to this cause or in between he will change his mind for the greed of ministerial berth or any other monetary gains and leave the sinking ship in the deep sea with all the passengers on board the ship afloat on the surface of the sea? People around Babush Monsurate must get a firm assurance from him that he will not change his mind otherwise people around him must not back Babush. He will surely have some ulterior motive behind leading this movement. Ulterior motive is the modus operandi of him and also of any of the corrupt politicians. Otherwise people must themselves lead this agitation to shelve this Narvenkar Habitat. People are capable of doing this because ‘GOEM ATAM UTTLAM”. Babush Monsurate said that to stop this IT Habitat, he will even shed his blood. Very deadly slogan indeed!! I feel we all Goans must prevent Babush Monsurate from shedding his blood especially because we need Goan blood for our protection. We want Goan blood to remain intact to support us and Goans. Pakleanchem Rogot, Mistissanchem Rogot ani Ghanttiamchem Rogot Goyant kobar zalear zata pun Niz Goenkaramchem Rogot Kobar Zalolem Amkam Nakam kiteak “GOEM ANI GOYKAR ATAM UTTLEAT”. We need their blood to save Goa and Goans. GOEM ATAM UTTLAM.

DEATH SENTENCE IN KUWAIT COMMUTED.

DEATH SENTENCE TO FILIPINA COMMUTED IN KUWAIT.

In Kuwait approximately there are about 1,30,000 Filipino workers amongst them a major portion consists of Maids. Overwhelming majority of these maids are not meant to work as maids since they are qualified and professionals in their respective professions but they come to work here as maids because of financial necessity and to alleviate their poverty back at home. Having no other choice, they come to work in Kuwait as maids which is the easiest and cheapest mode of coming to Kuwait to earn Dinars. A year ago one maid named Marilou Ranario was arrested by the Kuwait Police for stabbing to death her employer Madame because as reported, according to Ranario her Madame insulted her and her nationality. Humiliated by the insults Ranario took this extreme step. After a fair trial conducted by the Kuwait’s judiciary, Marilou Ranario was sentenced to death by hanging. Hearing this news the entire Filipino community in Kuwait was shocked. So too Ranario’s people and well wishers in Philippines. There was heavy pressure on the Government of Philippines in Manila to use its influence and good offices with the Government of Kuwait and its leadership to save Ranario from the gallows thru mercy petition. Philipinos in Philippines organized rallies and public meetings to exert pressure on their Government headed by Mrs. Arroyo to act and to act fast. Philipinos in Kuwait too created a heavy awakening amongst them to influence their Embassy in Kuwait to put pressure on their Government back at home in Manila to rescue Ranario from the clutches of death sentence by hanging.

Finally the power of people’s movement in Kuwait amongst the Philipinos and back at home too awakened their Government. The Government of Philippines is otherwise very sensitive of the well being and plight of its citizens abroad especially in the Gulf where lot of harassments are meted out to the expatriate workers, especially from the domestic sector. When the death sentence of Ranario was confirmed and upheld by the higher court, the vice president of Philippines immediately issued a statement pleading with the Government of Kuwait and its leadership to commute it. He even went a step ahead and with all his humility and with all the love and concern for for its small citizen Marilou Ranario the vice president of Philippines said “if necessary, I will go on my knees to the Amir of Kuwait to beg with him to spare the life of Ranario”. Oh my God!! What a humility and concern shown by the Philippines Government for its one ordinary citizen? Will our Government display such a love and concern for our citizens found in similar situation?

Finally a few days back the president of Philippines Mrs. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo with a delegation of 120 top personnel arrived in Kuwait on a special mission where Mrs. Arroyo pleaded with the Amir of Kuwait the clemency for Marilou Ranario. Bowing down to the plea of Arroyo, the Amir of Kuwait His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah commuted the death sentence of Marilou Ranario to life imprisonment with a promise to further reduce it after certain conditions and obligations are met. Though the trial given to Marilou Ranario was fair as per some legal experts yet the compassion shown by the Amir of Kuwait in this case is really laudable. While giving clemency to Ranario, the Amir of Kuwait said to Arroyo that normally he does not interfere with the judicial process “but since you are here to personally appeal for Ranario, I will not sign the decree of execution. That is within my power. I will reduce the penalty to life and when the other parties sign the forgiveness, I will further reduce the penalty”.

Now take the case of our Goan Francisco Araujo from St. Cruz, Ilhas who was hanged in Kuwait approximately a year before the invasion of Kuwait. He was sentenced for capital punishment – death by hanging – because he killed two persons, one bus driver and the other bus conductor of Kuwait Public Transport. Araujo was a poor man having his mother, sister, brother and other relatives working in Kuwait as domestics. His poor brother Daniel begged – borrowed money from here and there and hired a lawyer to fight the case of Francisco Araujo. But nothing has changed, his sentence was finally upheld by the higher court and ultimately Francisco Araujo was hanged. Before the execution of this sentence Daniel as he told me, went to Indian Embassy to arrange a mercy petition for clemency for his brother in death row Francisco Araujo. Regrettably and of course shockingly, Daniel told me that instead of giving a keen hearing to his plea, he was diplomatically told to get out by our Embassy personnel saying “you Goans are killing people and want mercy?? For what??” Having no choice, Daniel came back. Then he approached our Catholic Church where the then Bishop Mechallef gave a very sympathetic hearing to Daniel, prepared a mercy petition on behalf of the Catholic Church and presented it to the authority concerned but nothing worked in favour of our Goan brother who was finally hanged.

The Bishop of Kuwait Mong. Francisco Mechallef a Maltese citizen that time shown lot of sympathy to Araujo in death row, personally himself went to the prison to pay visit to Araujo, consoled him and even hearing his confession. Sometimes Bishop used to take in his car the mother of Francisco Araujo to see her son. Even the coffin for the funeral of Araujo was provided by the Church. The funeral scene in the Church and in the Cemetry was terrible. Almost everybody was crying, some sobbing softly while others screaming. It was an unbearable scene. Everybody was terrified but as instructed the body was not allowed to keep open in the Church nor in the Cemetry. The coffin was firmly screwed so that nobody can open it.

The funeral of Francisco Araujo was held in Kuwait attended by the Church packed faithfuls. Goans in good number joined in the funeral mass and burial. I was one of the persons who washed and dressed the body of Francisco Araujo and was too deeply involved in making arrangement for the funeral and burial formalities. My greatest act was to lower his coffin from one end into the grave by firmly standing in the grave. Next day, local Arab Times published a front page story of this funeral service in the Church and mine too carrying the coffin of Francisco Araujo on my shoulder and also one more photo where I was holding and pacifying the sister and mother of hanged Francisco Araujo. Though I went all out to assist in the funeral and burial yet many of my compatriots criticized me for involving with the funeral of a criminal. Even at my work place my superiors showed their dislike for my involvement in this funeral as if it was a sin to help the criminal. But I cared none and if worst came I was prepared myself for any eventuality.

While concluding, I ask one BIG QUESTION to my fellow citizens in Kuwait and in Goa in particular and in India in general. Is our Indian Embassy capable to climb mountains to save the life of any Indian citizen in a similar case as Filippines Embassy did? Is our Indian Government willing to condescend like Philippines Government and work strenuously to save the life of any Indian citizen awaiting the gallows? Will our Indian president or vice president or Prime Minister dare to take the course of action as done by the president and vice president of Philippines? Will our Indian public in India bring pressure on our Government in Delhi the way Philipinos did in Philippines to save the life of Ms Ranario? Will our Indian – leave aside Goan – Government take interest in its citizens the way Philippines Government did? NEVER EVER. Indian Government treats its citizens especially expatriates and mainly from the Gulf as non-entities. Who cares for us and for our woes? NRI Commissioners and Ministers for Overseas Indians are just a big tamasha and they will remain so. Because of the careless attitude of our government towards us, we are treated as dirt. Our importance will go up only when we as citizens of India are granted Voting Rights from outside India as others are having. Because we are not voting for our representatives, our representatives in Indian Parliament and Legislative Assemblies are not caring for our woes and pleas. Why only our government in India? Even our own Embassy below our noses does not care for us. Sometimes Embassy staff are acting like Maharajas exactly the way our Ministers and elected representatives are acting in Goa in particular and India as a whole in general. What good one can get from these artificial Maharajas for the common Indian and especially for those working in domestic sector? To fight for our rights and privileges we as expatriates will have to create a front of ours manned by the ex - expatriates only and not by Faleiros, not by Goa based Advocates, not by retired army generals and not by any Altu-Faltu nor any Ladru Pedru who is ignorant of our difficulties. By coming to Kuwait with the excuse of fact finding mission for 2-3 days as visitors nothing will change for us.

Veronica Fernandes,

KUWAITKARS SUPPORT KONKANI MARTYS.

On behalf of all my like minded friends and colleagues in Kuwait I strongly support the meeting arranged by Romi Lipi Action Front on 19th of this month at 3.30 p.m. at Lohia Maidan, Margao, as indicated in the below mentioned Press Release.

Everybody must be well aware how Kuwaitkars on behalf of "KUWAIT KONKNNI KENDR" collected a fund for these Martyrs after their martyrdom and disbursed to their next of kin thru proper channel.

KKK in particular and Kuwaitkars in general will never forget the immense sacrifices these Martyrs have made for the cause of Konkani. They have sacrificed their precious lives for the cause of Konkani and Goa. May their Romi Konkani souls rest in peace and may God give wisdom to the hard core Nagrivadis to accept the reality of Romi Konkani and support its recognition.

NEED OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM.

NEED OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM.

This is in reply to the article under “Other Voices” by Ali Ahmad Al-Baghli in the local Arab Times dated 06th of this month regarding the rejection of the Government demand by the Islamic fundamentalists for the construction of a mosque for the Bohra community in Kuwait. Before dwelling on the subject let me commend Mr. Al-Baghli for his excellent piece of write-up in support of justice. It is not in this case alone that Al – Baghli raised his voice for justice for the weaker segment of the society but otherwise too he has shown his concern for the sufferings of the weaker class of people in Kuwait. Being a top Kuwaiti and a former Minister in the Cabinet, his voice is having a very soothing effect on those who are denied their privileges on flimsy grounds. In the big desert of injustice Al-Baghli proved to be an Oasis for the expatriates who are denied their rights and privileges.

Bohra community in Kuwait as elsewhere in the world is a very peace loving community having no militancy and no religious fanaticms in their blood. They serve Kuwait since many years now, much before Kuwait gained full independence. During this long period we rarely heard any malfunctioning by this community. They are the least supervised community by the authorities concerned because they harm none. During the invasion period theirs was the last convoy to leave Kuwait for India via Jordan. His Holiness Sayedna – the Pope of Bohra community stationed in India had no wish to call back Bohras residing in invaded Kuwait because even in invaded Kuwait he wanted his people to serve Kuwait because Kuwaitis needed help and support. Having no choice finally His Holiness recalled his people back to India and welcomed them all in Mumbai for an audience.

During this audience His Holiness Sayedna told that “do not worry, Kuwait will be liberated by the power of God and instructed his people to pray for the safety of Kuwait, its leadership, Kuwaitis and for its liberation”. Taking this advice from their Pope Sayedna, Bohras not only in India but spread all around the globe prayed and supported the liberation of Kuwait. Amongst all those who fervently prayed for Kuwait during the invasion time have not returned to Kuwait on their previous jobs and businesses but they surely wished good for Kuwait and Kuwaitis. Like us Goans in Goa where we organized a mighty political movement under Goa Kuwait Solidarity Centre to exert pressure on the Gvernment of India to support openly the liberation of Kuwait, Bohra community in India did not emulate our feat but surely His Holiness Sayedna used his spiritual power and political clout with the top leaders in India and outside too to support the liberation movement of Kuwait.

His instruction to his community members in Kuwait whenever he visited Kuwait was to “be faithful to this country and its leadership”. Taking this advice Bohra community as a whole in Kuwait always remained peaceful and faithful to this country and its leadership. Their contribution for the cause and development of Kuwait is immense without any problem. They are the least problematic community in Kuwait. They are the God loving and God fearing community amongst us. To practice their religious obligations and rites they need a place of worship for them. This cannot be denied to them or to any other community in Kuwait. Denying any person his right to worship God and a place of worship in tune with his religious system is denying the existence of God. People who believe in God must allow others to practice their own religious obligations. Every religious entity has its own way and system to reach to God and heaven. Nobody can say his religion is only true religion leading to God. The essence of all religions is the same. Mahatmah Gandhi once said "Religions are different roads leading to the same destination". Let everybody pray the way he deems right as per his religious teachings. And those in Kuwait who deny Bohras the privilege of having their own mosque are showing their ingratitude to Bohras who have done so much for Kuwait and its people. I still remember stories during Kuwait’s invasion period that how in some quarters concerned people were agreeing to give full liberties to all religious communities freedom to practice their religions freely in Kuwait once Kuwait is liberated.

Those who are denying Bohras freedom of their own Mosque are hurting the relious sentiments of Bohras thereby inviting more support and symphaty for Bohras. This hurt feelings can surely create ill feelings not only amongst Bohras but also amongst other minority communities. In the long run it is not good. Kuwait needs world support for its existence and survival. To get this support continuously Kuwait cannot live in isolation. Islamic fundamentalists must ponder over it.

THE KONKANI FILM "BLACK".

The Konkani film 'BLACK' as I saw it.

by Gaspar Almeida, Associate, http://www.goa-world.com/

"BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion" is a witty and humorous story betweena middle aged Goan couple and their two sons who have just began their careers and marital lives far away from home. Director T-Bush uses wit and humour and gives the entire film a twist here and a twist there, keeping the suspense of what's to come next.

The twirl in the story comes in the form of two sons based in Kuwait and the ploy they adopt to drive a wedge between themselves, the sons with their spouses and the parents back in Goa - the reason being not appreciating and being ashamed of the traditional family 'profession'.The screenplay relies heavily on appealing dialogues and various 'comedy' relationships in the film to put forth the basic story, complete with appropriate song sequences. The approach that the Director uses is different, interesting and entertaining. It is an all and all out comedy.

The film "BLACK" has been directed by the award winning filmmaker,T-BUSH, and the star cast comprises (listed in alphabetical order)of: Abby Periera, Agnello A.S. Fernandes, Albino Lawrence, BabitDourado, Braz de Parra, Cajetan de Sanvordem, Carl Rodrigues, Clara Rodrigues, Conchita Cardoz, Carmo Santos, Diana Rodrigues, Dominic Araujo, Francis de Verna, Francis Menezes, Gaspar Almeida, GracyMorais, Helen Pinto, Ignatius de Xelvon, Irene Vaz, Jeremiah Vaz, Joe Fereira, Joseph Rodrigues, Julio Cardozo, Kevin Vaz, Katty de Navelim, Laurent Periera, Laurie Miranda, Luis D'Costa, Manuel de Santa Cruz, Mabel, Marina D'Souza, Mario de Majorda, Nasser, Neeta Fernandes, Nelson Colaco, Nicholas Rodrigues, Nitin Castelino, Olinda Dias, Philip Periera, Philomena, Qeurobina Carvalho, Riana Azavedo, Roullond Fernandes, Rowla Lewis, Salu Faleiro, Sandra Fernandes, Sharon Fernandes, Simon Dias, Simon Gonsalves, Cisco, Late Sunny de Quepem, Sylvester Vaz, Vicky Vaz, and Zoro.

The film belongs to the comedy genre and is set in Goa and Kuwait. The music composed by Norman Cardoz, Goa's finest talented musician, and lyrics by Braz de Parra. "BLACK" has an interesting script, entertaining screenplay and T-BUSH's execution and portrayal of the different characters and his choice of the cast is really commendable and had deligently carried the film on his shoulders with adequate flair. T-BUSH has chosen an interesting setting and has made use of wit and humour immensely well which enlivens and enriches the film to a great extent. It's the first Indian film to be shoot in Kuwait. The director has etched out the real life angle too within the story with a unique flair lending it immense dignity and maturity. The continuity sequences are a treat to the eyes.

T-BUSH has managed to give the majority of the first timers who have faced the camera the same edge that the other characters of professional stage actors would have. The film entertains its audiences to an extent with its sharp and witty dialogues. The climax is acceptable and the cinematography too is eye pleasing, with English subtitles. Music is soft and charming which matches the theme of"BLACK" and performances are good, enhancing the film in a great way.

At the commencement, the organizers at Friday's (30th Nov.) show had a small introductory ceremony compered by Gaspar Crasto during which Cajetan Pereira and Querobina Carvalho - were introduced to the audience. The guests of honour Rev. Fr. Lionel Braganza, Principal of Don Bosco School (IEAS)-Kuwait and TV, stage, Durdarshan and Zee TV personality Arif Kazi paid glowing tributes to T-BUSH. A one minute silence was observed in fond rememberance of late Sanny Vaz (deQuepem). His presence in the 'BLACK' film will forever keep his memory alive as in his audio albums. A commemorative souvenir was released to mark the occasion. 'BLACK' was premiered in Kuwait on 10thAugust 2007 in the presence of H.E. The Ambassador of India M.Ganapati in a glittering ceremony, and Friday's was the third screening inKuwait. According to well-placed sources, plans are to have it screened in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, U.A.E., Canada, U.K.and U.S.A. and in India (Goa, Mumbai, Pune, Mangalore, Delhi,Ahmedabad and Bangalore) in the first quarter of 2008.

"BLACK" being a film which may be watched after a long interval - as Konkani films are a rarity - I am positive that the technique and the technologically advanced systems incorporated in filming and production as well as sound effects in 'BLACK' with the e-cinemaconcept will have T-BUSH kept on the pedestal of being the first for this achievement.

As T-BUSH at the commencement of the screening emphasized in a two line statement, "As I have mentioned at the premiere show, you have to view 'BLACK' with your heart. I hope you will do so this time".Indeed it had to be, and knowing the talented resourceful T-BUSH - aman of few words, I did.

TIATRIST WILLIAM DE CURTORIM ATTACKED.

TIATRIST WILLIAM DE CURTORIM ATTACKED.

According to the news item appeared in Herald dated 28th November 2007, about 10 – 12 miscreants attending the Tiatro “Avoin Kelem Pap, Putan Dili Zap” of William de Curtorim, staged at Gomant Vidya Niketan, Margao, on 27th Nov. 07, flung eggs on the stage when William de Curtorim sang the song, a “Zupatti” to Churchill Alemao for his sin of changing political parties. The title of this Zupatti solo is “SAVE GOA SODDUN CONGRESSANT GHELO”. It is a direct slap on the face of Churchill Alemao for his bad political habit of changing political parties. According to the same news item, the miscreants who flung eggs on the stage were the supporters of PWD Minister Churchill Alemao though Alemao denied any acquiescence in this mischief.

History said that Tiatrists in Goa were the targets of their ideological foes who tried to suppress the voice of Tiatrists from the stage. During the Portuguese rule in Goa, Tiatrists’ songs and plays were censored by the Village “Regidore” on behalf of the Goa Government much before their Shows. Anything against the Portuguese Government and its functioning was censored. During those days Tiatrists were allowed to express from the Stage anything against anyone except Government. For this reason the great Tiatrist Alexinho de Candolim to express his feelings freely against Goa Government, fled from Goa and surfaced in Bombay where at Bhangwaddy Stage he rendered his most courageous solo against the functioning of Portuguese Government of Goa. This was his ire against the Portuguese Negro soldiers from Aguada who killed his colleague and son of his Village Mestiri of Candolim Parchial School. When Portuguese Government of Goa came to know of this then Alexinho de Candolim’s return to Goa was put under surveillance because of which he had to stay in Bombay leaving his entire family in Goa.

Tiatrists from Goa had to make lot of sacrifices to keep the Konkani Stage strong. Tiatrists were the mouth piece of Goan voice and especially the voice of suffering and persecuted Goans. Their voice had great effect. What Judiciary, Police and Government machinery could not do, our Tiatrists could do by making use of the Stage. The voice of Tiatrists always proved to be loudest and powerful. For this reason Kid Boxer somewhere in 1959 was deported to Goa from Bombay by the Government of Bharat for singing a song against the wrong doings of Bharati Government regarding his beloved Portuguese Goa. Because of this deportation Kid Boxer’s lost his lucrative job at Central Railway – Parel, Bombay and because of this loss he and his family had to suffer a lot. Again in Goa soon after the entry of Bharati rule in December 1961 in early 1962, at Mapusa, Kid Boxer was arrested for singing a piercing “Zupatti” against the dirty rule of Bharat in Goa. On the same day and in the same Tiatro, Conception-Nelson-Anthony were also reprimanded by the Bharati authorities came to witness that Tiatro. They were not Administrators of Mapusa but they were the Chamchas of Bharati corrupt politicians, they pretended to be the patriots of Bharat in Goa.

Kid Boxer in his solo sang thus:
“Tum bhitor sorlai chukon, mortoloi sukon, dusreacho desh pochona (Referring to forcibly annexing Goa by the Bharati Government).
Tum Panpotti khatai ani poch’chu korun thuktai, lozui kaim disona (Referring to all the Ghantti Mamas coming to Goa from all over Bharat and shamelessly spitting Pan on the roads and floors without any human decency which was very high in Goa during Portuguese rule).
Tum nestai forkot Valo ani khatai fokot Palo (Referring to all the Bharati people who descended on Goa following the forcible annexure of Goa by Bharat wearing nothing but a white piece of cloth covering the lower part of their bodies and drinking nothing but tea).

Conception-Nelson-Anthony in their maiden trio formed first time said in their song that Nationalist or Freedom Fighters were responsible for the mess that Goa became after the Bharati rule in Goa. They even suggested that Goans should migrate to Brasil because Goa is no more a good haven for real Goans. These were the most powerful songs that shattered the might of Bharat Serkar in Bombay and in Goa. Later on during the rule of Dayananda Bandodkar under Maharastrawadi Gomantak Party, the Goa Government introduced Portuguese Government initiated Censorship against Tiatros and their songs in late Sixties only to punish Tiatrists like Conception-Nelson-Anthony because they were the worst critics of MGP rule in Goa. Because they were fighting for justice for Goa, Bandodkar treated them as Jews in Naziland. But they never cared, so too Kid Boxer and they went on singing Zupatti songs. It was they who were responsible for shaking MGP Goa Government. Tiatrists deserved highest compliments for fighting for the cause of Goa, justice and common men from the Stage. They served Goa better than politicians. To serve Goa and Goans they never asked bribes as the current Ministers and politicians are demanding from the people, of course shamelessly

Why Stage artistes only? Even those artistes acting in “Zagor” and “Sangodd” also played their roles in exposing the ill deeds of the Government. People from Agacaim are known to possess militant skill to fight against injustice. During Konkani Language agitation they were always on the forefront to participate in Rallies and Meetings held in Panjim. In this movement I associated and integrated with them in Panjim and enjoyed their love and affection. Defiance to the brute rule of Goa Government was their forte. When we organized our Rallies and Meetings at Panjim in solidarity with Kuwait during the invasion of Kuwait, Kuwait evacuees from Agacaim were in big number attended our rallies and meetings. Again, almost a century back this incident happened in Agacaim, Ilhas Goa. The Toddy Tappers had to pay certain amount of Tax for their business of extracting Toddy from the Coconuts. When Government increased this Tax, “Renders” from Agacaim opposed it and as a sign of their protest they refused to carry on with this business. One of the “Renders” from Agacaim was forcibly defying his colleagues by resuming his work of extracting Toddy. When he refused to toe the line of his colleagues, one of the Toddy Tappers used a gun and shot him dead while climbing on to the Coconut. Next day all the Renders from Agacaim were arrested and taken to Panjim Police Station for questioning. Goa Government tried to suppress this news but in vain. Immediately in Candolim there was a Zagor where one of the singers sang a beautiful song on this episode and immediately he was reprimanded by the Village Regidor for awakening the masses on happenings in Agacaim. Two verses of this song go thus:

“Janerachea Pirmerak dhorun velet Rendrank,
Ani Ponje voron Pirez kelet khuim team Agxikarank,
He baxen vinchar kelo tanche kodden serkaran,
Ki hi budh konne dilea ti sangat mhonnon juramentan.

Ch.
Agxekarani sanglem ami hazir mhonn mornank,
Punni zamnno kedinch ghalchenant maddank,
Agxe eklean Madd dovorlole taka jitoch marlo faran,
Tacho deman cholta atam Ponje Serkaran.

William de Curtorim is creating lot of ripples on Goan Stage. Earlier too 5 years back at Mapusa he was harassed by the Goa Government machinery for singing a song against Rane and even he was taken to Police Station for questioning. Now at Margao according to press reports, thru Remote Control Churchill Alemao harassed William de Curtorim by silencing his mouth from expressing his voice freely. By doing this William gained more support, more publicity and more sympathy and his opponents lost much of their credibility. He became now a greater hero. His marketing value is enhanced now much more than what it was earlier. Those who are trying to suppress one’s sane voice are criminals. In democratic system everyone must express his feelings rightly and justly. Goa is disgraced by our Ministers and Government officials. They should be reprimanded first. However, while expressing themselves from the Stage the singers should not show their lust for money. Some of the singers in Goa blackmail some of the politicians by demanding thousands from them otherwise they threatened them to expose their misdeed from the Stage. Ealier powerful Tiatrists like Kid Boxer, Conception-Nelson-Anthony never did such dirty tricks, neither Rom-Rem-Rod. They used Stage to clean the rot and not to make money thru illegal manner by using the terminology of threats like “Tum makam 20 hozar dinai zalear aum tuji zupatti mhonttolom ani tukam expose kortolom”. “Tum makam 50 hozar ditai zalear aum tujevoir ek sobit kantar mhonttolom ani tukam sobemazar hero kortolom”. Such Tiatrists and singers do not deserve symphaty.

I condemn vehemently the unwarranted attack on Tiatrist William de Curtorim. Nobody got right to stop in this manner any Tiatrist from singing his song. In case there is anything wrong in the song then the singer could be tried in the court of law and not by flinging eggs in a very nasty manner. Only nasty people with the support of nasty political leaders can do such nasty acts. William de Curtorim must not cow down by such threats. If necessary, he must simultaneously go for recording such songs in his Albums and thus spread his message of justice. Irani spiritual leader Ayatolla Khomeini created his revolution by spreading his revolutionary sermons thru Audio Cassette. Thru this method he shook the powerful Palavi Empire headed by Shah of Iran. In his maiden Audio Cassette, William de Curtorim heavily praised the Churchill Bros. for their valiant fight for the cause of Konkani. In his next Audio Cassette William de Curtorim must expose all the politicians who are disgracing Goa and Goans the way he eulogized Churchill Bros. in his maiden Cassette.

While concluding, let me quote French writer Voltaire who said on freedom of expression: “I fully disagree with what you say but to allow you to say what you want to say, I will do everything within me, even to the extent of facing death to allow you to say what you want to say though I fully disagree with what you say.” If Churchill Alemao thru remote control is really involved in pushing his supporters against William de Curtorim then he must ponder over what Voltaire has said centuries back. It is not enough to ask democratic rights from others but one must know to give democratic rights to others.
