NOTARY IS SERIOUS BUSINESS.

By Aires Rodrigues

It is time that the judicial authority cracks the whip to bring some sanity and sanctity to the despicable manner in which some of the notary work is conducted.

The profession of notaries is regulated by the Notaries Act, 1952 and allows a notary to verify, authenticate, certify or attest the execution of any document, to administer oaths and to or take affidavits from any person. By the Notaries Rules, 1956 every notary is supposed to maintain a notarial register making an entry of every document attested and a notary is supposed to operate from an office within the area mentioned in the certificate issued to him.

The executant of a document and the persons identifying him have by law to sign in a register to be maintained by every notary something that is glaringly violated by many of the notaries in cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Notaries and their agents cannot be pimping out at bus stops outside courts and court canteens blindly signing documents without even the presence of the executant of the document and the witnesses identifying the executant.

Notarising has attained notoriety and even a document signed in the name of a dead man can be attested without any hassles whatsoever. A few of such cases have even surfaced in Goa. In a way all this brings disrepute to the whole legal system which has to be set right. Notary work is serious business and not all about rubber stamps only

"KOXTTANTLEAN MOJI KOLA" NEW DVD FOR SALE IN KUWAIT.

One of the interesting Konkani Albums available in Kuwait Video Shop for sale now is the DVD of songs and Jokes produced by the Acid attack victim Bryan Fernandes. All the songs are composed by Bryan only and rendered by the different singers namely Connie M, Lawry Travasso, Anthony San, Mario Menezes, Roma, Jr. Nelson, Jessica, Elvis Mascharenhas, Nancy, Roe Ferns, Seby de Divar and others. While the Jokes scripted by comedian Ambe and enacted by himself, comedians Agostinho and Jannet.

All the songs are good and worth listening but the main important and the most interesting song is the one rendered very beautifully with his very beautiful voice and with very beautiful timing by the youthful and handsome Seby de Divar. In this song the entire history of the Acid attack on Bryan is narrated though in the beginning itself Fr. Agnelo B. D'Souza appearing on the screen narrates the details of the story thereby making it easy for the viewers to understand the contents of this DVD.

Bryan Fernandes is from Chinchinnim while on his way to Panjim to see his sick sister on 6th of August last year was attacked by the goondas in Panjim by throwing deadly Acid on him. These goondas were hired by Bryan’s neighbour who out of jealousy for Bryan’s success in the cultural field decided to get rid of Bryan by liquidating him in this manner. It was said that he paid Rs. 55,000/- to the goondas to carry on with this sinful plan. Though Bryan suffered but ultimately God saved him while his envious neighbour who wanted to liquidate Bryan finally died within 5 days of the Acid attack out of depression and fear.

Jealousy is the worst form of sickness many people are suffering. In Kuwait we have such sick people who cannot bear to see someone flourishing. This type of jealously is very much seen among the Tiatrists. The late Rosary Ferns was easily the best Tiatrist not only in Kuwait but also beyond Kuwait. One of his colleagues in Tiatro circle popularly known as “To aslear aum nachona” introduced a code among Kuwait Tiatrists not to introduce Rosary Ferns in their Tiatros thereby to finish Rosary from Konkani Stage. Only the Bastardised Tiatrists implemented this code but it created no effect on the progress of Rosary. Incidentally some of the very Tiatrists who were on forefront against Rosary shamelessly like real rascals acted in Rosary’s Tiatros. And the initiator of this code “Rosary Aslear Aum Na” who wanted to be the facto hero of Kuwait Tiatrists finally and pitiably suffered a Brain attack which made him unfit to step in on to the Konkani Stage. May God forgive him and bring him back on Konkani Stage as a renewed man.

Konkani Albums are creating lot of upheavals in our society even shaking the mighty persons and governments. About 4 years back Calvert Gonsalves tore the Government and Church into pieces thru his CD. Similarly the medical industry was shattered by the release of yet another Konkani Album where it was shown how irresponsible medical practitioners killed the young girl Rovena when surgeons removed her body organs without letting her parents known. These doctors are not doctors but butchers.

Since time immemorial Tiatrists are known to raise their voices against injustice and this DVD KOXTTANTLEAN MHOJI KOLA is one such testimony which people must see and support such ventures against injustice. Let there be more and more such exposures for the good of the society. Well done Bryan Fernades, I fully support your campaign on such injustices. Carry on and fight out more strongly.

CARMO REBELO'S DVD ON SALE IN KUWAIT.

“HO AMCHEA KOXTTANCHO INAM?” is the latest Konkani DVD of Carmo Rebelo reached Kuwait for sale in the Video Shop. In the absence of original I had to purchase a pirated copy sold here very cheaply.

After watching it attentively because it captures the attention of the viewers very easily I found it worth watching because as it was indicated by the producer that “it is based on family & cultural values”. Besides I can add one more word to it saying “traditional” values also. It depicts Goan traditional values with regards to their religious belief

It is a good story woven around a feud between two religious entities – Catholics and Believers; girls side Believers while boys side Catholics. Both sides are adamant as far as their religious believes are concerned finally forcing the boy (Willy) a Catholic to leave UK by deserting his staunch Catholic parents (Pascoal Rodrigues & Felcy) to join his girlfriend in Goa.

In this Album we see how we in the name of our religious denominations are creating splits among us. Catholics and Believers are both the followers of Christianity, both these denominations are propagators of Christianity but with some different ways. Catholics perform more rituals while Believers are dubbed rightly or wrongly as anti-Mother Mary.

I am in Kuwait involved in many religions and denominations including Believes attending their services and lectures but never even once I noticed that Believers are against Mother Mary. To my knowledge those who campaign against Mother Mary are not true Christians whether they are Believers or from any other Christian denomination.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Religions are different routes leading to the same destination”. Believers and Catholics are two different routes leading to the same destination. But there are many faults of Catholicism and its leadership for the development and spread of Believers who will according to me capture a major portion of Catholicism in the very near future. What Catholicsm cannot provide Believers provide to its followers and overwhelming majority of the current Believers are from Catholic denomination. Many of the Catholics who left Catholicism and embraced Believers have done this as an act of rebellion against Catholicism and its arrogance. If Catholicsm is still strong it is only because of the strong base created by its earlier followers, promoters and leaders. But this base looks shaky now.

Earlier our tradition was to oppose our children marrying in different castes and in different religions but now that trend is changed and fights erupt between Catholics and Believers as it is depicted in this DVD.

One important subject that is seen in this DVD is that of the acquisition of Portuguese Passport which gives better dividends than that of the Passport of the "Chor" who robbed Goa from the hands of Goans and forced their unwanted Passport on Goans.

Pascoal Rodrigues’ role as a father was an excellent one along with that of Felcy as his wife. Both these great Konkani Stage jewels brought an extra colour to this Album. They were ably supported in their endeavour to make this DVD magnificent by Willy and Felcy’s Sister pretty looking Aplon. Veteran Jessie Dias played a very good role of a mother. In the first Canto of the play she sang so beautifully with her so beautiful voice reminding me of her singing prowess she exhibited in C. Alvares and Prem Kumar’s Tiatros during those great old days. In fact all the Cantos in the play were worthy of admiration.

Comedina Jannet once again proved why she is dubbed as Comedy Queen of Konkani Stage. She is very natural artiste. Other artistes too played their roles well.

One can also watch in this DVD felicitation ceremony of the great and now retired artiste Anthony D'Souza who is the surviving member of original Trio Kings namely Conception-Nelson-Anthony.

Carmo Rebelo is a new to me but I find him exceptionally talented, knowledgeable and wisdomatic. To produce such a magnificent work is not a joke. This work of his gives resemblance of the works produced by the yesteryears great artistes. Keep up the good work Carmo Bab.

FR. NEVILLE GRACIAS' NEW KONKANI FILM.

Every week in Kuwait we get one or two Konkani Albums either as CD or VCD or DVD. Every week I purchase them from Video Shop. Most of these Films are scrap but some are good. One such a good Konkani Film recently I got was of Fr. Neville Gracias’ “VOCH ANINK PATOK KORUM NAKA”.

Fr. Neville and I met in Kuwait about 4 years back when he visited Kuwait and taking this opportunity he participated in Rosary Ferns Tiatro Kuwait Soddun Vetana in which he played a nice role. When I penned down a few lines with his photos in both the local newspapers in Kuwait describing his dramatic activities, not only Goans but even international community residing in Kuwait was surprised to know that this priest is a dramatist also.

The recent Film of his “Vochat Anink Patok Korum Naka” was really worth watching; the story has got biblical meaning and spiritual significance and it is a very good lesson for the young couples who are unfaithful to their marriage vows. In this Film one gets lot of information of how to be faithful to his/her spouse and also how to be unfaithful as well.

The romantic role played by handsome and attractive Sylvester Vas opposite to equally attractive Felcy deserves highest compliments. Felcy is one of the senior most artistes whom I first time saw in Minguel Rod’s Tiatro “Lembddo Santan” when I was a College student about 40 years back and she was very young and beautiful looker then attracting immense interest in youths like me. Seniority and age did not shadow her original looks which she in this film beautified more elegantly with nice dresses. It is admiring she still keeps her youthful looks. As usual Sylvester Vas played the hero’s role with his normal ease and elegance.

The other beauty who gave extra glamour for this Film was attractive Jessica Gomes who stands tall among all the lovely looking female artistes on Konkani Stage today. It reminds me of those great days in sixties when beautiful Antonette and charming Ophelia used to dazzle the audience with their superb acting and beautiful looks. It is very essential for the female artiste to have good looks to attract the attention of the audience. It is not only Jessica’s beauty that attracted the viewers to her but also her very romantic role she played opposite Salu de Loutolim who was unfortunately no match to her as he lacks lot of qualites to play such a romanti role.

Both the comedians Domnick and Luis Bachan did justice for their comedy roles.

Fr. Neville’s role as a Doctor was superb, the delivery of his statements was appropriate and to the point.

Fr. Neville deserves praises for scripting the story of this film which is worth watching.

SKYNET RAIDERS, GOA MAROONS WIN. MALABAR UNITED, INDIAN STRIKERS, UNITED FRIENDS AND DON BOSCO ORATORY SHARE SPOILS IN KIFF LEAGUE FOR 2012-2013

Day 3 of the KIFF league for the Late JP D’Mello Rolling Trophy kicked off in humid conditions on 19th October 2012 at the MOH Sabah grounds in Kuwait with four matches.

In the first match of Group A, two strong teams from South India, Malabar United and Indian Strikers locked horns. Malabar United after losing the first match started strongly, but Indian Strikers held firm. Indian Strikers went ahead early through Haris Kunnammal. Malabar United equalized through Jibhu after a spot kick was awarded. In the second half Dunston put Indian Striker ahead. As the match was heading towards a draw, Malabar United equalized through Jayan to share the spoils. Man of the Match was awarded to Jagadeesh of Malabar United. The match was supervised by Christopher and assisted by Mubarak and Simon.

The second match in Group B was between Skynet Raiders and YRC Rising Stars. Skynet after the setback in the 1st round started positively and were awarded a penalty which Tiago converted. Five minutes later Skynet increased their lead through Sunny. In the second half Manuel scored a brace to end a comfortable win for Skynet and keep alive their hopes for qualification. YRC Rising Stars did make forays into Skynet to reduce the deficit, but could not breach the tight Skynet defense. Man of the Match was awarded to Manuel of Skynet Raiders. The proceedings were conducted by Mubarak at the center with Simon and Sharma on the lines.

3rd match of the day in Group D, GOA Maroons took on CRC Chinchinim. GOA Maroons kicked off in style with their midfield toying with CRC. Joe opened the scoring for GOA Maroons and Zelito rounded to make it 2-0 at half time. In the second half GOA Maroons were all over CRC who did not have any answer to the onslaught. Zelito continued his fine form and scored the brace and third for GOA Maroons. The rout was completed by Joe who scored from a penalty spot to complete his brace and lead the final tally in favor of GOA Maroons 4-0. The score line would have been much worse for CRC Chinchinim if not for their goalkeeper Anthony who saved admirably in the final stages of the game. Man of Match was bagged by Zelito. The match was refereed by Francis in the center and Sharma and Christopher on the lines.

The final match of the day in Group C saw Don Bosco Oratory taking on United Friends Club. DBO attacked the rivals from the opening, but UFC as usual soaked in the initial pressure and counter attacked. Sustained pressure from DBO earned them a penalty which Lloyd converted in the 1st half. UFC retaliated and equalized in a brilliant fashion with their diminutive medio Xavier scoring a gem of a goal sending his well directed kick from the top of the box into the roof of DBO goal. The second half started on frantic pace with DBO dominating initially, but Martin under the under UFC was once again at his superlative best. UFC counter attacked with Xavier again with his fleet footed runs unleashed a scorcher which beat the DBO goalkeeper, but hit the bar and came out. DBO pressurized UFC for the winner but Martin did not allow his goal to be breached and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Man of the Match was awarded to Xavier of UFC. The match was supervised by Philip at the center with Francis and Vincy on the lines.

The Man of the Match awards are sponsored by Integrated Logistics Company. Housie snowball (bingo) prize is sponsored by Al Qatan Travels.

'CHINTNAM ZALINT SOPNAM".

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD.(Isaiah 55:8

We plan in one direction while God has His own plans for us and His plans alone take precedence over our plans.

Asis is his name hailing from Calangute, Bardez Goa and was working in Kuwait for over 3 decades. During his long period of work in Kuwait he established himself well having his own house, wife and children; one son of his is working in Kuwait. On 8th of this month he told me that he is leaving Kuwait for good on 10th inst. and will have a nice and restful life in Goa. He further told me that he worked very hard to be what he is and it is time for him now to enjoy his life in Goa with his family. He had great ambition to involve in social work once he is in Goa. In Kuwait though he did not involve himself openly in the community work but supported community causes.

However in the same evening on 10th I got the news that Asis is expired due to the massive heart attack and his dead body is to be flown to Goa in the same flight in which he was to travel. What a tragedy!! He had high dreams to implement his plans in his home place but because of his sudden death his “CHINTNAM ZALINT SOPNAM”.

How many of us working in Kuwait for a long period are destined to implement our plans successfully after our retirement from Kuwait? Or are we destined to follow the road on which Asis has walked? Many of us from my experience point of view work here so hard with so many difficulties suffering from tensions to make little money to give a better living to our families but unfortunately many times many of us do not live to see our families living a better life because of the sudden deaths many of us face. Many times to maximise our savings to live happily back at home after our retirement we do so many sacrifices by tightening our belts and curtailing our wants beyond limit but regretfully many of us do not survive to enjoy the benefits of our sacrifices. Prematurely we go to the graves. It is very saddening to face this end but it is a reality for many of us.

I have seen from my own eyes many of our Goans inspite of being able to live with moderate comfort are living like Cockroaches; one of them was living with 4 persons in one small room though he was boasting of his 2 floor Bungalow he constructed in Goa. When once I questioned him of his pathetic living standard in Kuwait when he can afford a decent accommodation he replied saying “here in Kuwait I will live like a Cockroach but when I go back to Goa for good I will live like a Maharaja in my Bungalow”. Unfortunately, he never survived to live in his Bungalow in Goa because his dead body was flown to Goa. This was the real tragedy of the happening in one’s life.

Many of the Goans after earning so much and saving so much by curtailing their genuine wants and expenses in Kuwait are living in Old Aged Houses because in their retired life they were rejected by their wives and children.

If I ponder over such incidents, I fall sick thinking “what is in store for me”. Will my “CHINTNAM ZATELINT SOPNAM” also? God forbid and He alone can save us from the likely disaster in our life. However, as believers in God we have to be ready to accept the God's plans and nothing else.

MISUSE OF OFFICIAL VEHICLE MUST STOP.

By Aires Rodrigues

The gross and rampant misuse of government vehicles for unofficial use by Ministers and Government officers must stop. The State exchequer should not be burdened with Government vehicles being used by the families of Ministers and government officers, for their private shopping trips, drops to railway stations, airport, bus depots, cinema, markets, places of worship, taking children to school, going to restaurants, attending private functions and picnics etc. We even see the official vehicles being used to go to Casinos too!

After official duties all vehicles should remain parked at the residence of the officers and Ministers or at the Secretariat in Porvorim. The spouses and children of Ministers and officers should get used to the public transport or better still, walk rather than ride, which will also do immense good to their health.

So next time you see an official vehicle being misused for unofficial work don't be a mere spectator. Don't deflate the tyres either but just call the police control room and register your complaint. Misusing government vehicles is definitely an offence which should not be taken lightly. Official vehicles can and should be used only for official work.

THE JUDICIARY IS OUR HOPE.

By Aires Rodrigues

In Goa today, with a dysfunctional and politically manipulated executive, the judiciary has had to play a very crucial role in delivering justice to those burdened by faulty government decisions and legislations. In a way the Judiciary has had to take charge of Goa's governance to a large extent cracking on the illegal acts of those in power and authority. The steep rise in public interest litigations over the last few years suggests that people are ready to legally challenge the injustice meted out to them by the Government.

Politicians religiously visit holy shrines but intentionally commit the most unholy acts. A few years ago Supreme Court Judges, B.N.Agarwal and G.S.Singhvi slammed the government, saying that even God cannot save this country from such politicians. One could not blame the Judges for their exasperation. If politicians behave with some sanity and display clarity in their acts and deeds, the burden of the Judiciary to oversee governance would be eased to a large extent. Politicians more than any one else need to feel the wrath of God.

Judges cannot please everyone. Justice can sometimes taste unpleasant but has to be swallowed like a bitter pill. Justice is one of the few commodities that is not dished out and cannot be bargained for over the counter. Justice has to be dispensed with proper application of mind, cautiously yet speedily. We all have our own personalities and style of functioning but as along as the intent is to deliver justice, no judge can be faulted. Like all of us, judges are bound to err. Things become yet more difficult for a judge in those cases where the chances of both parties is almost even. It is a matter of fact that many cases come in this category and it makes the Judge's task all the more cumbersome.

Accepting the position of a judge is a very big challenge. One has to sacrifice one's personal liberty to a great extent. Family life takes a toll as socializing is restricted. While Politicians have bags loaded with money delivered to their home, Judges get bags loaded with files which they have to read through in the evening in preparation for the next day.

Justice has to be meted out at the grass roots. So it is very essential that persons with sound knowledge of law be selected for this noble job even at the entry level as Judicial Magistrate First Class. The selections of subordinate court judges have to be very meticulous as persons who cannot interpret the law only do damage to the justice delivery system. In times when money and muscle power is solely determining the heights our Politicians can reach, the task of theJudiciary becomes all the more pertinent, crucial and vital.

We have to hope that only persons with good knowledge of law and with a good insight to interpret and dispense it would want to take responsibility as Judges. This noble task may not be monetarily satisfying but it must definitely give one the mental satisfaction of having done a noble job. Nonetheless, the government should review the pecuniary benefits of the judicial officers so that the Judiciary attracts nothing less than the best and the brightest.

CM SHOULD STOP TARGETING OFFICERS.

By Aires Rodrigues

The vindictive harassment being meted out to IAS and IPS officers and other government officials who do not bow and bend to the whims and fancies of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is in utter bad taste. The bureaucracy has a constitutional role to play and they have to ensure that the rule of law prevails in all decisions taken by the Government, without fear or favour.

Chief Minister Parrikar should stop targeting and tossing around officers who have the spine to advise the government on what is right. Mr. Manohar Parrikar should not expect government officers to be torch bearers of the saffron ideology nor that of the Sangh Parivar or of a coterie. It is an irony that these officers have to bear the humiliation and indignation in an otherwise very hospitable Goa.

The Chief Minister’s high handed confrontation and arm twisting with the Centre is also uncalled for. Ours is a federal structure and this Mr. Manohar Parrikar has to respect. He has no other option. His “I know it all” attitude and swollen ego will neither do him or our Goa any good. Wilson Mizner had rightly said “A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but, after a while, knows something”. Are you listening, Mr. Chief Minister.

KIFF LEAGUE SOCCER REPORT OF 12.10.12.

INDIAN STRIKERS, KERALA CHALLENGERS WIN. AVC, GOA MAROONS, UFC & KGA SHARE SPOILS IN KIFF LEAGUE FOR 2012-2013.

Four matches were held for the KIFF league for the Late JP D’Mello Rolling Trophy on 12th October 2012 at the MOH Sabah grounds in Shuwaikh, Kuwait.

In the first match of Group D, AVC-Kuwait took on GOA Maroons. AVC started on a positive note and scored the opener very early when Maroons keeper spilled Braulio’s scorcher in the path of Anthony who made no mistake to put AVC ahead. The first half was dominated by AVC and Braulio had the misfortune in seeing his two well placed shots hit the crossbar and coming out of play. The second half saw Maroons with renewed vigor and equalized through Zelito when AVC defense failed to clear their lines from a set piece. The equalizer goaded Maroons who attacked AVC and Joe brought an excellent save from Alvaro. Maroons went ahead through Albert once again from a set piece. The setback stung AVC who threw everything in their might at GOA Maroons and finally equalized through Sidney of a clever pass from Anthony. In the final moments AVC peppered GOA Maroons citadel but the agile Costantinho under the GOA Maroons bar saved the day and was deservingly awarded the Man of the Match. The match was supervised by David at the center with Sarto Baptista and Chistopher on the lines.

The second match in Group C was between United Friends Club (UFC) and Kuwait Goan Association (KGA). Both the teams knowing that an outright win will brighten up their qualification chances went berserk for the goal. It was KGA who were more clinical in their midfield play went for the kill, but UFC defense led by Teotonio and Martin under the bar nullified their efforts. KGA were more on attacking their rivals and UFC were comfortable in soaking the pressure and relied on counter attacks as both the teams trooped in goalless at the lemon break. The second half proceedings were similar to the first with neither side sounding the scoreboard. UFC goalkeeper Martin was at his superlative best with his timely aerial interventions which kept the KGA forwards at bay. After an uneventful second half without breaking the deadlock both the teams settled for a draw. Man of the Match was awarded to UFC goalkeeper Martin for his fine performance. The proceedings were conducted by Francis at the center with Liston and David on the lines.

In the 3rd match of the day in Group A, United Goan Center (UG) took on Indian Strikers Sports Club. Both the teams matched each other in all departments of the game. Indian strikers were more lethal and hit the cross bar three times in the first half and were unlucky not to forge ahead. UG with their more youthful setup were mostly consigned in the midfield rather than attacking the final third. After a barren first half, Indian strikers took the lead through their hardworking striker Jagadeesh who had the hit the cross bar in the first session this time carefully guiding his shot passed the UG goalkeeper. UG tried in vain to equalize but Indian strikers defense held firm to earn full points. Man of Match went to Jagadeesh. The match was refereed by Nicholas in the center and Liston and Jose on the lines.

The final match of the day saw YRC Rising Stars taking on Kerala Challengers in Group B. This match saw the two powerhouses of south Indian football in KIFF. Kerala Challengers had a slight edge in the first half, but failed in the box to convert with a barren first half.

The second half Kerala Challengers upped the tempo, but Rising Stars goalkeeper was at his best thwarting numerous goal bound shots. As the match petered towards a draw, Kerala Challengers scored the all important winner in the dying minutes of the game to emerge victorious through Jamal. Man of the Match was awarded to Louisano of Rising Stars for his performance under the bar. The match was supervised by Philip at the center with Sharma and Michael on the lines.

A minute silence was observed before the start of the matches as a mark of respect for the departed soul of Mr. Santana Cardoso, father of KIFF P.R.O Mr. Julio Cardoso.

United Goans (UG) Kuwait offer its deep condolences to Julio Cardoso and his family on the sad demise of his father Santana Cardoso.

CALL OFF IFFI 2012.

By Aires Rodrigues

After a string of flawed decisions the Chief Minister Mr. Manohar Parrikar could make one sensible move and cancel IFFI 2012. In the given precarious scenario that Goa finds itself in, by no stretch of imagination could the government be squandering another 8.5 crores on yet another IFFI.

Ever since this IFFI tamasha commenced in 2004 the tax payers have shelled almost 100 crores for this annual event which has infact not met its objective of shaping Goa into a world class international film destination. For the last eight years IFFI has been a State sponsored entertainment for some and a money making channel for others. The organizers, the Entertainment Society of Goa has infact evolved as the Entertainment Scam of Goa.

Besides canceling IFFI 2012 the Goa Government would have to take some rigorous austerity measures to get its financial house in order. There has to be a total ban on all foreign trips by Ministers and officers. Travelling within the country should also be only when necessary. Wining and dining at the cost of the tax payer should be a thing of the past. The ever escalating size of the bureaucracy needs to be trimmed so also the Corporations unnecessarily set up need to be wound up. There has to be financial accountability in every paisa spent from the State exchequer.

MALALA IDEOLOGY FLOURISHIG IN PAKISTAN.

MALALA.

This is in connection with the teenage Pakistani girl Malala who was shot from close range by the Pakistani Taleban last week to prevent her from campaigning for the spread of the female education. She as per the available information is still in critical condition undergoing treatment in the hospital in Pakistan. I pray to God to save her life to allow her to carry on with her mission.

Malala is not only a female young girl but more than that Malala is an ideology, she is a movement based on great ideology. By shooting her and even killing her will not stop her movement because it is already on the move. Taleban and her adversaries may think with her eradication and liquidation her campaign may come to an end. On the contrary her campaign will be carried forward more vigorously by all her colleagues and followers who subscribe to Malala’s ideology. And in Pakistan there is no dearth of such followers. The entire Pakistan is behind her and her movement. This is very admirable.

A few moments before the final act, the great Greek Philosopher Socrates in ancient Greece holding the cup of Hemlock in his hand told the then Greek authority that “if you think by liquidating me from this planet you will be able to silence my voice? No! Never! Never you will be able to do that. After my death people in Greece will investigate why Socrates was killed! Then they will know the truth that Scrates was killed because he was speaking right and campaigning for the good cause of the society. And then these people will be fighting for the cause that Socrates was promoting in such a strong manner that you will not be able to stop them. They will campaign for my ideology more powerfully where you will be helpless to stop them”,  then Socrates swallowed the Hemlock from that cup and died as per the verdict of the authority of his time.

This is exactly what will happen in Pakistan and signs of this happening are already visible everywhere. Since the shooting of Malala, Pakistan is gripped with Mala ideology. Every female student in Pakistan is become conscious of her right to education. So also every Pakistani citizen is become aware of mischief of Taleban who propagates that Western education is anti-Islam. Islam is not the religion of Easterners only, it is the religion of Westerners also and in the West there are innumerable Muslims propagating and following Islam, many of them more strongly than many of the Eastern Muslims. Precisely because of this, over a century back one Muslim Scholar, Imam Mohammed Abdo when he went to the West he remarked thus “I see Islam in the West but not Muslims while in the East I see Muslim but not Islam”.

Once again I reiterate my admiration for Islam which is a great religion having innumerable followers all over the world. I believe in Islam as I believe in all the great religions that preaches the doctrine of Love and Peace.

MEMORIES OF THE OCT. 13TH ATTACK.

By Aires Rodrigues

One more 13th October – the return of a fateful date. Four years have passed by since that brutal & cowardly attack on me at Ashok Restaurant, behind Panaji Post office. For many 13 is unlucky, they say, but for me it was a day of miracle – the escape from the jaws of death.

In the over 35 years of social activism, on many occasions, I have had to bear the brunt of various attacks. But the savage assault, on that 13th October night, will be the one to remember, surely for the rest of my life. It is an irony that the attack took place just 10 days after celebrating the anniversary of the Father of Our Nation when we all vowed by Gandhigiri. Soon some opted for Goondagiri.

The manner in which the attack was carried out clearly showed that what was planned was my elimination. But, by God's Grace, I was lucky to escape with only my fingers dented. The masked goons may have been able to 'finger' me, but were not able to dampen my spirits and cow me down. Many litres of my blood may have gushed away but my system was reinforced with a tanker load of courage and strength. That bloody attack on me, if anything else, only toughened my determination to continue the struggle against all injustice, corruption and nepotism. Many would have been relieved if I had vanquished but my time was not up and those who were planning to feast on my mortal remains would have to wait while I still relish some more Chicken and Mutton Xacuti at Ashok's! The execution of the brutal attack was at lightening speed and lasted just over 3 minutes, but by God's grace the medical aid was also rendered very speedily and professionally. The five masked men were out for my neck but had to go back content with denting my shoulders and damaging the fingers of my right hand.

Over the years I have been warned by friends and well-wishers to be careful as the rich and mighty could plan an attack on me. Once in public life, one has to be ready to face such situations bravely and put ones trust and hope in the Almighty. Post attack, friends and well-wishers have been also advising me that I should move securely and also seek a licensed revolver. All this seems unnecessary for the simple reason that death and destiny are beyond our control.

On that 13th October, had it not been for the Almighty's protection, it would have been my death anniversary today. I sought no revenge against those masked men, but only hoped that the deadly weapons used in the failed attack to liquidate me will be used in future for the purpose they were made for – to protect life.

Over the years I've taken up many issues as a result of which I've had to cross swords with one too many. I would, without hesitation admit, that the issues I've highlighted, have hurt and exposed some of the rich and mighty. Every issue I've pursued has been only after an in-depth study and with an open mind. Never with any bias or personal prejudice, and of course never with any personal interest or sense of revenge.
Politicians and people in authority, by virtue of their positions, should be ready for both bouquets and brickbats. They should know that their lives and (mis)deeds are under the public scanner and are more than likely to be exposed at some stage. Freedom to fearlessly fight against social ills is the very hallmark of a true democracy, but unfortunately some of those in power who ride to power on a contrived electorate are unable to withstand such a scrutiny.

I would candidly say that many of my colleagues would never dare to handle some of the issues I've taken up. Goa's alarming levels of corruption and this totally chaotic dysfunctional administration has to be cleansed and let us hope that all the blood shed will not be in vain, but will help initiate this much needed cleansing. The Oct 13th assault will always linger in my mind and forever be engraved in my memory. Everything in life being so uncertain, only the Almighty knows what is in store. In my memoirs that I intend penning soon, there will be, for sure, one chapter on that Oct 13th bloody assault.

IMPRESSIVE OPENING OF KIFF SEASON 12 -13.

The much awaited Indian expatriate soccer season was officially declared open by Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) on 5th October 2012 at the MOH ground in Shuwaikh. The opening ceremony started at 7.20 am with former Presidents of KIFF and Presidents of all 18 affiliates being led by KIFF’s Gen. Secretary Praveen Kumar to the middle of the pitch. KIFF President Mr. Fidelis Fernandes accompanied the Guest of Honor Michael D’Cunha and special invitee Tony D’Costa who is an IFRA referee and a well known personality of Indian Expatriate soccer in Kuwait. Fidelis Fernandes in his eloquent speech thanked all 18 affiliates for their support and the MOH authorities for providing the ground to the federation to conduct its activities. He also welcomed the Indian Football Referees Association ( IFRA ) back to the fold for this season and hoped for a fruitful and long relationship in the years to come. Mr. Fernandes announced and reminded all the affiliates about the Fair Play Trophy rules which were discussed and cleared at the EGM for trial on the opening day proceedings. National anthems of Kuwait and India were played followed by release of balloons depicting the national colors of Kuwait, India and KIFF. A celebratory cake was cut by all the dignitaries and KIFF President declared the season 2012-2013 open starting with the KIFF league for the Late JP D’Mello Rolling Trophy. KIFF’s young and flamboyant Sports Secretary Mr. Kevin Vaz conducted the proceedings. A Housie (Bingo) round was conducted with snow ball prize of air ticket Kwt-Mumbai-Kwt sponsored by Al Qatan Travels during the break.

With favorable climatic conditions and a green turf beckoning the action got underway with defending champions Don Bosco Oratory (DBO) taking on the DHL Football Club. DBO were quick out of the blocks while DHL were comfortable to soak in the initial pressure and relied on counter attacks. After a barren 1st half DHL stunned DBO by scoring against the run of play when a teasing cross from Anthony was met by Binoj to score a beautifully headed goal. DBO mounted pressure and were awarded a penalty which Michael to the dismay of his colleagues shot wide and all hopes of a comeback were extinguished. The match ended with DHL being victorious 1-0 and DBO ruing the missed opportunities. Man of the Match was awarded to Roland of DHL. The match was refereed by CO John along with Sarto Baptista and David.

The second match pitted Curtorcares United against Malabar United. The young and energetic Curtorcares United dominated the proceedings with their speedy play, but the goal eluded them in the first half. In the second half Curtorcares United scored the match winner with Martin scoring a gem of a goal when his classic swirling shot entered the far post giving no chance to the Malabar United keeper. Man of Match award went to Martino Gomes of Curtorcares United. The match was supervised by Sarto Baptista along with Sharma and David.

The final match saw Navelim Youth Center overcoming Skynet Raiders 3-2 . Both teams started on a frantic pace with Skynet scoring the fastest goal of the day when Macleston gave his team the lead with leaden footed NYC defense and goalkeeper frozen in their tracks. Stung with the early goal NYC attacked with vigor and equalized through their hard working medio Bernardo Pires. Skynet went into the lead again when a Skynet striker was brought down in the NYC penalty box, and the referee rightly pointed to the spot. Veteran medio Tiago placed the ball calmly to go ahead into the lemon break. NYC equalized in the second half when Arif guided his header in the far corner of Skynet goal. NYC scored the winner, when Skynet goalkeeper misread the flight of the ball which struck the upright and gifted NYC striker Cruzeido who darted in and scored.. Man of the Match went to Tiago of Skynet Raiders for his overall performance. The proceedings were manned expertly by Francis at the center and Chris and Sharma on the lines.

While all the matches were played in the spirit of the game, more effort is solicited from all the affiliates towards the Fair Play rules for the Fair Play trophy to make the game more palatable to the fans as it creates a soothing environment on and off the field of play. Finally, KIFF has to be commended for their community service as they approved the launch of a Konkani VCD titled ‘’Tin Rukh’’ by well known Konkani stage artiste Querobina Carvalho during the day’s proceedings. Man of Match awards for KIFF League are sponsored by Integrated Logistics Company.

The schedule of matches on 12/10/2012 for the ongoing KIFF League:
