ALINA’S PROPOSED CABINET INDUCTION: ECI VERDICT ON 7TH May
The Election Commission of India will on Monday 7th May decide on the fate of the proposed induction of Mrs. Alina Saldanha as a Cabinet Minister.
The complaint filed by Adv. Aires Rodrigues against the induction of Mrs. Saldanha is being currently examined by the Judicial and the Model Code of Conduct sections at the Election Commission of India and the final decision will be taken by the ECI on 7th May.
Adv. Aires Rodrigues in his complaint has stated that the by election to the Cortalim constituency is scheduled for June 2nd and as Mrs. Alina Saldanha is the probable BJP Candidate, her induction into the Cabinet would be an obvious step to sway the voters.
Adv. Rodrigues has stated that the induction of Mrs. Alina Saldanha as a cabinet Minister would be contrary to the established norms for free and fair elections besides being in violation of the Model Code of Conduct currently in force.
Stating that the mandate of the Election Commission was to ensure free and fair elections, Adv. Rodrigues has demanded that orders be issued and steps be taken to restrain the ruling party from inducting Mrs. Alina Saldanha into the Council of Ministers while the Model Code of Conduct is in force.
Goa’s State Electoral Officer Mr. S. Kumaraswamy while referring the complaint filed by Adv Aires Rodrigues to the Election Commission of India has already written to the Chief Secretary of Goa and to the Goa Raj Bhavan that the proposed cabinet induction of Mrs. Alina Saldanha be deferred till the bye-election is over.
All eyes will now be on the verdict of the Election Commission of India who is confronted with a case where for the first time a probable candidate is sought to be inducted as a Minister on the eve of elections while the Model Code of Conduct is in force.
