Goan Memories of 2nd August...--Part IV

A. Veronica Fernandes addressing the rally in Goa support of Kuwait - 1990

2nd of August this year will be 17th anniversary of the brutal invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi regime under its dictator Saddam Hussein. Along with all others residing in Kuwait in 1990, 2nd August, a huge Goan community comprising around 25 thousand was also caught unaware.

Goan Memories of 2nd August...--Part IV
Goa-Kuwait Solidarity Center in support of Kuwait - Panjim 1990

Though Saddam Hussein tried to put a cover on Kuwait and eradicate its identity yet we openly and boldly challenged Saddam Hussein by publicly displaying Kuwait's Flags, Pictures of Amir and also of Crown Prince of Kuwait. We openly and publicly played the National Anthem of Kuwait and cared no one. Our Rally went very smoothly and peacefully even though in the beginning itself there was some misunderstanding when I as an initiator of this movement was taken to Panjim Police Station in a semi arrested manner for questioning. But otherwise Goa Police, Panjim Municipality, Goa Government machinery created no hurdles on our way.

Though members of ruling party under PDF Goa Government wanted me to align with them but I refused, not only to the ruling party but also to any other political party because once you allow these politicians a foothold in your circle then they use you for their own promotion by
neglecting your issue. Politicians always have their own ulterior motives for this reason one has to be very careful with them. And secondly they have no dignity and no integrity. We the Kuwaitkars, organizers of our movement were men of high ideals, high integrity, high respect, high morality and high dignity. We the organisers of our movement were not people involved in rowdism at Sour Grounds nor Drunkardness during our functions for Goa Day, Tiatros and for other Functions and Socials.
Goa-Kuwait Solidarity Center in support of Kuwait

It is not only the sense of gratitude to Kuwait from where we earned our sustenance that made us to form Goa-Kuwait Solidarity Center in support of Kuwait but also it was thru the sense of high ideals to stand by a weak party, Kuwait. Kuwait is like a home for us away from our original
homes. Even though we earned good Petrodollars in Kuwait compared to what we would earn in Goa yet we work in Kuwait very hard. Many of us go to work at dawn and return after the sun set and in the bargain we never enjoy the previlege of the sun rays. By working in Kuwait many
of us neglect our families back home in Goa due to which our children turned out to be like orphans. In order to work in Kuwait many of us commit crimes against our families in Goa by denying them of our love, warmth, affection, attention and guidance. By working in Kuwait we face lot of hardships and difficulties in life yet we love Kuwait. We many of us are treated in Kuwait and on jobs like slaves yet we still love Kuwait because we have gratitude for this country. While in Kuwait we do hard work and we sacrifice in Kuwait for the sake of our earnings best of our precious life. Many of us do not find proper place and time to at and to sleep. Many of us stay in tight compartments because of our tight circumstances. Almost everywhere we face difficulties because of the non-egalitarian structure of this society.

The life for many of us is very hard here. Heavenly Mannas are not falling for us on Sabbath
Day to enjoy weekly free of charge meals. Inspite of all these we supported (and still support) Kuwait when Kuwait was passing thru difficult days while many of our fellow Kuwait Goans abstained from supporting our movement in a sheer sign of ingratitude, of course in an un-Goan manner.

Why many of our fellow Kuwait Goan evacuees only? Even our Goa based Goans who received so much of benefits from our "Kuwaitkarponn" had no hearts to join us in the hour of our crisis. The worst traitors and culprits were Priests and Nuns who received so much of financial
donations and help from us for their Schools, Convents, Chapels, churches and other projects.

Fr. Freddy was the biggest beneficiary of our largesse, I was personally instrumental in helping him financially so many times and so much but he never associated with us and never supported us openly in our movement. We helped him so much financially to collect aid for his Gulab Magazine. Likewise all the Priests who came to Kuwait and begged with us for money. I know who were the priests who were applauding when Kuwait was invaded.

Goa-Kuwait Solidarity Center in support of Kuwait

In Mapusa one Priest said "Kuwaitkarank butt laglo tem borench zalem, hem favo tankam". For Konkani movement we Kuwaitkars did so much but none from that group voluntarily supported us. Not a single stalwart of Novem Goem Pratishthan associated with us, neither Gurunath Kelekar nor Dr. Rebello, nor Bosco Lobo, nor Clovis D'Costa, nor Christopher Fonseca, nor Sara Machado when we did so much for the inception of Novem Goem Pratishthan and Novem Goem Daily Newspaper. No person from Goa Cancer Hospital Society associated with us in our movement when we Kuwaitkars donated around 20 lakhs of rupees for this cause. Where are these money gonme now? No prominent Tiatrist openly supported us, on the contrary some of them made mockery of us from the stage and while they were mocking at us, the others in their trade were nicely keeping their silence instead of protesting. "Volkott kastache" shamelessly coming to Kuwait to act and to stage their Tiatros and thereby make lot of money. They want Kuwait only to make money. I cannot understand how our Goans could reach to such an ebb especially when they received so much of help from us? Are these ungrateful Goans really Goan or Ghanttis? Am I making a mistake by equating these ungrateful Goans with poor Ghanttis many of whom are having higher degree of sense of gratitude?

To be concluded...

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

LETTER TO GOVERNOR OF GOA.

To,
The Governor of Goa,
Goa.

Dear Your Excellency,

It is with deep regret and chagrin I am writing this letter to you from Kuwait on behalf of thousands of like minded Goans working in Kuwait. It is our wish to see our dear Goa developed, prospered, peaceful and secular too. But the current trends at political level in Goa make us disturbed. Hence, this letter to you to save our Goa from further disaster from the hands of local politicians who are revolting against the Digambar Kamat Ministry.

Your Excellency it is in your hands now to save Goa from the hands of rogues who are joined together in the name of poor Goans and in the name of the development of Goa. They are not interested in poor Goans or development of Goa and Goans. They are only interested in destroying Goa and Goans and amassing illegal wealth for them at the cost of poor Goans.

Your Excellency, on behalf of all my like minded Goans working in Kuwait I request you honestly to prevent by all means handing over Government power to the gang of Parrikar – Babush – Churchill and their colleagues. Your Excellency, if Goa Democratic Alliance headed by Parrikar with the assistance of Churchill Alemao and Babush Monsurate is allowed to form the next Government in Goa, I am sure then this Government will exploit poor Goans in such a way that there will be nothing left for them to enjoy without bribe except Air. The members of the GDA will loot Goa, destroy its ecology, sell its land to outsiders, destabilize Goans from Goa and bring about total disaster on Goa. The GDA is coming into existence only to rob and loot Goa and Goans. Permitting them at this stage to form their illegitimate Government means rewarding the criminals, rapists, cheats and robbers.

I don’t say Congress Government and its Ministers and MLA’s are good but at least they formed their Ministry thru proper way and not thru chickanery. Congress Ministry under Digambar Kamat came into being thru proper democratic process while GDA is coming to power thru disgrace which should in no way be permitted. You have Mr. Governor power and capacity under legal procedure to deny the defectors and cheats the privilege of formation of next Government in Goa. I am sure for the good of Goa and Goans you will do the justice for Goa by denying Churchill and his gang the Government power in Goa.

Your Excellency, GDA in no way should be allowed to form the next Ministry in Goa. They are traitors and cheats, such people should not be allowed to form the Government. I appeal to you your Excellency because I want my Goa to be into the hands of good people and not cheat, traitors and defectors. In no way such people should be rewarded for the betrayal they have committed against their electors. They have put Goa into turmoil and you alone can save it.

A.Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

cc: The President of India - Please give utmost importance to this letter.
The Prime Minster of India - Please initiate a move in Parliament to stop defections.
Mrs. Sonia Gandhi - Please note that the whole disaster in Goa of your Congress
Government was the making of Margareth Alwa.

GOA CHIEF MINISTER DIGAMBAR KAMAT’S FALL

GOA CHIEF MINISTER DIGAMBAR KAMAT’S FALL

Finally as expected has happened. The moment Churchill Alemao happened to be out of power I realized in the beginning itself that Digambar led Congress Government of Goa would not last. Churchill would not accept anything short of Cabinet berth for him, leave aside Chief Ministership.

There was lot of political stability in Goa during the last 5 years because he was in Delhi as MP where his capacity to play political games was very dismal. He is like a Lion. When Lion once tastes the blood then the same Lion will never lose its taste, he will go for it again and again and live on it. This is what Churchill’s attitude. His failure in the recently concluded election was the victory for only two members of his Save Goa Front. With these two Seats he could not play his game. Hence, thru defection the destabilizing movement of the Digambar Ministry by Churchill even by conniving with the enemies of Goa and Goans. Those who feel he has initiated the defections for the love of Goa, Goans and Konkani then they are all mistaken. Churchill got no love for Goa, Goans and Konkani. It is only a political move to gain political milage and to fool the innocent Goans and innocent Konkani lovers of Romi Konkani.

I am sure everyone will remember how he piloted the downfall of Rane Government in 1990 and formed the PDF Government first led by him and then by Dr. Barbosa, with the merger of him and his Congress defectors with MGP of Ramakant Khalap. By merging with MGP the party that hated Konkani, the party that worked to introduce Marathi in Goa, the party that worked against the interest of Goa and Goans, the party that came into being to eradicate the identity of Goa, the party that came into being to liquidate Christianity and Christians from Goa, Churchill had done a big blunder which entitles him to be the number one enemy of Goa, Goans and Christians. By initiating the formation of PDF Government Churchill proved that for his personal gains he will do anything.

Earlier he was a die hard Goan and die hard Konknnivadi but by joining hands with MGP to form PDF Government he proved all his earlier excellent credentials in support of Goa for Goans and Konkani as null and void. The real Goa and Konkani lovers lost their love, affection and interest in Churchill because by initiating PDF Government Churchill became a commercial man who cared no more for Goa and Goans though he said and still says that his love for Goa and Goans is intact. But by joining hands with MGP no Goan can call himself a Goa lover, a Konkani lover Goan and secular because MGP like BJP is not a secular party. A secular man will never associate with communal party like MGP or BJP. In Goa there were innumerable communally inflated issues in which Churchill also aligned with those issues but never helped secular Goans to diffuse them.

Till the formation of PDF Government the situation in Goa was much better but with the inception of PDF Government, Government services and jobs were put on sale for the highest bidders because money in crores of rupees was required to pay as bribes to the defectors. Hence, taxing of the people with lakhs of rupees for getting jobs in the Government sectors, taxing of Goans with lakhs of rupees for the Government services. It was thru this crime that men like Mauwin Godinho amassed illegal wealth by being in the PDF ministry. Otherwise Mauwin Godinho inspite of having close rapport with Rajiv Gandhi joining Churchill brigade in PDF was not an easy task. The base that was put by Churchill initiated PDF Government in robbing the common Goan of his previlleges was later on carried forward and its results are now very much visible where anything to get in Government sectors one has to pay in lakhs as bribes.

Churchill has mastered this art of amassing wealth thru this process and he is very hungry for power and honour because he was denied of these attributes in his earlier family life. Most of the people who imitated the colonialists were once neglected, rejected and denied of these privileges during colonial time. Hence, their psychological disorder leading to their greed for power and money. Churchill has led the people of Goa down, Churchill has led Goa down. Churchill was more responsible for introduction of more corruption in Goa at all levels. Churchill was responsible for sucking the blood of poor Goans in Goa. Due to the precedent created by PDF Government of paying bribes in lakhs of rupees for Government jobs and services Goans especially poor Goans are become victims. Which poor Goan can afford to pay lakhs in bribes to get a job in the RTO, Customs, PWD and other departments? Can a poor Goan afford these bribes? Who created this bribe paying precedent in hefty sums? Was it not Churchill initiated PDF Goa Government?

Now, on the same principle of PDF Government formation, Churchill with the help of his other like minded colleagues like Babush and Parrikar has destabilized the Digambar Kamat’s Government to form an alternative Government. I am sure until he succeeds in forming the new Government Churchill will never have peace. Knowing his nature, Congress stalwarts and specially Margaret Alwa should have advised Center to take appropriate measures. Mummy Victoria should have been allotted a portfolio and kept her happy. By denying any portfolio to her Margaret Alwa made a big blunder. But Alwa cares for what? She is not interested in the well being of Goa and Goans. She was rejected by her own people in Mangalore because of her misdeeds. Hence, how she would do good for Goa and Goans? And by the way, Centre also is not much interested in Goa because compared to other states Goa is a small pimple, Goa can only be an irritant for Center and nothing else.
Even if Goa goes to dogs, Centre and Congress High Command will not care. It was a big mistake for Congress to allow family members in their fold. Dawlikar brothers, Churchill brothers and father and son duo of Ranes have brought about downfall of Digambar Kamat’s Minstry. Goan politics is become family affairs and when they have their option these family members join together for their personal gains forgetting about their party affiliations. When time comes these family members show affiliations to their blood and not to the parties they represent. After all blood is ticker, no??
Now when the newly formed Government comes into power, under Parrikar Ministry, initiated by Churchill Alemao the sale of Government jobs and other Government services will go for sale for the highest bidders in which case poor Goans will not be able to bid for Government jobs. Even Parrikar as CM will not be able to control this sale of jobs. According to reports coming the defectors are promised crores of rupees. From where these crores will come? Only thru bribes and illegally taxing the poor Goans for every job that Government renders.

Babush Monsurate will again go for his earlier initiative of introducing the old Regional Plan with little modification and to fight against him we Goans again will have to come on to the streets again. This means we genuine Goans and genuine Goa lover Goans will never have peace. These Goa Montris to satisfy their lust for money and power will always keep us on the streets in a show of public demonstrations. Parrikar a very sirud “Hindu Bamon” will openly tone down his tirade against Christians but surely in a disguised manner he will cut one more Christian holiday and produce one more VCD further disgracing Christians.

In a pure “Bamon policy” Parrikar will remove his hair from his head and gently and softly cut the necks of every Christian who will never know the long hair of his is cutting their necks. It is a slow killing process in which Bamon got better expertise. He thru his ingenuity will fill the Government jobs with all his BJP cadres and thus safronise Goa. Churchill Alemao will be responsible for the re-emergence of Safron Government in Goa under Parrikar.

One rascal from Curtorim is now sleeping at home after introducing Safron Government in Goa. While Parrikar is safronising Goa no Christian Montri in his Cabinet will oppose him because they will be occupied in grabbing more power and more money. The rest go to hell for them. These rascals will even sell their wives and daughters for the sake of political power and money. Who will be the victims of Parrikar led Government of Goa initiated by Churchill Alemao? Only Goa, Goans and Christians. To liquidate us from our own Goa and convert us as strangers in our own land we don’t require Portuguese, British, Maharastians or any other non-Goan Indian. Our destruction is brought about by our own bastardized Goan politicians. Blame not others but blame our own politicians.

Many of our Romi Konkani lovers will believe that the chances of getting Romi Konkani elevated on par with Nagri are bright but according to me it will never happen under the new Government called “Goa Democratic Alliance” initiated by Churchill with the help of Babush and others because in this Government there will be worst enemies of Romi Konkani namely MGP and BJP. Hence, the chances of Romi Konkani getting its due share is NIL. Wilson Mazatello and other Tiatrists should take note of this. We Kuwaitkars have already realized this. The other factor is Mopa Airport. This issue will also not be sorted out as per the earlier stand of Churchill because in the next “GDA” Government of Parrikar there are also the worst supporters of Mopa Airport. In such a situation will Churchill challenge his colleagues or he will succumb and become party to Mopa Airport?

Meantime, all the voters who elected Churchill Alemao and his colleague in SGF Reginaldo in Navelim and Curtorim respectively must question their MLA’s prerogative of aligning with anti-SGF parties like BJP & MGP. Both these MLA’s were elected by their voters not to align with anti-Goan and anti-Christian parties.

It is time now for the thousands of voters from Navelim and Curtorim to stop their MLA’s from taking their voters for granted. It is time for the voters of these constituencies to be assertive of their rights, they should not allow their MLA’s to take them for a ride. The constituents of these constituencies must call public meetings and if necessary Church leaders in these constituencies must awaken the people to oppose their MLA’s from joining MGP and BJP elements. Also, the thousands of voters from Cuncolim constituency must rise and stop their MLA Joaquim Alemao from leaving Congress. He was not elected by a handful of party stalwarts on whose advice he cannot take thousands of innocent voters for a ride, he was elected by thousands of voters whose opinion should not be ignored. The people from Cuncolim in Kuwait must also raise their voice in unison against Joaquim deserting Congress and joining BJP and MGP elements, both BJP and MGP are antiGoans, antiKonkani. Once in the past AVC has allowed their MLA Farrel Furtado to disgrace Goan politics by joining MGP elements in the formation of PDF Government. Will they again allow their MLA to defect? Was it not enough Farrel Furtado has done enough damage to AVC pride and to Goan politics? And what about Kuwait Navelkar and Curtorkars? Will they accept their MLA’s joining anti-Goan BJP and MGP?

Allowing Churchill to align with anti-Christian MGP and BJP means disgracing the greatness of the great Goan leader Francis Luis Gomes from Navelim. Those Navelkars who believe in the greatness of Dr. Francis Luis Gomes must raise their voices in unison wherever they may be, any part of the World, against Churchill aligning with communal parties. Churchill, his brother Joaquim and Reginald were all elected by the masses and these masses must rise in revolt against their MLA’s for aligning with communal parties. Navelkarani – Curtorkarani – Cuncolkarani, show now your real power to oppose the might of defectors. Now and now alone will be the test of your real Goykarponn and real Secularponn.

DEFECTIONS & GOAN POLITICS

DEFECTIONS!!! CLOSE THE LOOP HOLES

In recent Political circles of Goa, Media speaks of Government being
unstable due to some MLA’s are due to plot against present Govt. in
connivance with opposition and other small parties. That means, a
political Circus is due to strike at any days now. No one knows when such
news will surprise us in one of our Mornings. They did it in the past and
they might do it again for sure as the Politicians/MLA’s are so greedy and
shameless that they can trample the very principles they preach thus
setting an very ugly example to would be next generation Politicians, and
we, who chose a government with mandate have no option but just watch
helplessly. Or can we put such Clowns in the right place? Next 5 years
they will make us watch their monkey play which even real monkeys might be
ashamed of their freak-born cousin MLAs. Cant a People’s Power put them in a
right place?

To sort out such vicious problems, there should be a legislation with
immediate effect like:

1) No MLA/MP of any Party is allowed to change their sides. They
should instead resign if they do not agree with Party dealings after the
elections.

2) MLAs/MPs wanting to resign should pay heavy fines equivalent to
total cost of By-election to the State treasury. Plus penalty for wasting
the Peoples valuable time and causing tension and trauma to the people
during the election time.

3) MLAs/MPs if resigned, cannot contest for next Election till 6 years
period is passed by.

If such legislations are brought no MLA/MP will even think to play the
monkey games they are presently playing. Present defection rules are full
of loopholes and are very ineffective on them.

But who will bring such legislation? The MLAs and MPs themselves are the
ones who are introducing and also passing such legislations in the
Legislative Assemblies and Parliament. Since Legislative Assemblies and
Parliament are full of very rogues who take the People of the country for a
very long and jolly ride with shackles in their hands, they will never bring
such regulations which are directly affecting them, it should be then left
to Supreme Court to make it a law.

We, the people of this country, must ourselves change this dirty politics and
bankrupt policies introduced by the Law Makers. Therefore, there must be a
Watch Dog Body to trim and tame these vicious stupid MLAs and MPs, who by
their criminal acts put the entire people of the Country not only in a very
big loss but also in chaos.

God help us.

BRAVO - PAKISTAN'S JUDICIARY.

BRAVO - PAKISTAN'S JUDICIARY.

30 Years back in India when Alahbad High Court under its Chief Justice Sinha passed a verdict against Indira Gandhi, unseating her from her Parliamentary Seat for using fraudulent means to get elected, Indira Gandhi like a wounded Lioness got humiliated and immediately introduced Emergency Rule in India citing a fake excuse that national security is at stake. While on 20th of this month after the Supreme Court of Pakistan gave its landmark verdict of reinstating Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chawdry against the earlier decision of Gen. Musharraf of removing him from his post, Gen. Musharraf with his normal cool temperament graciously accepted the verdict of the Court. I salute Gen. Musharraf for his great heartedness of accepting judiciously the judgment of Pakistan’s Supreme Court. By accepting the court verdict Gen. Musharraf showed his willingness to follow the rule of law whether it is affecting his own credibility or not. By the way I strongly feel that by accepting the court verdict and allowing the earlier suspended Chief Justice Chawdry to resume his work in a normal way, Gen. Musharraf attained the status of a hero. If he was Indira Gandhi of 30 years back I feel he would act rash and put Pakistan as a nation into further chaos just like Indira Gandhi put India. By accepting the court verdict Gen. Musharraf silenced his critics and brought the country out of further turmoil. Accepting the verdict of Supreme Court, Gen. Musharraf accepted the decision of the referee and conceded the defeat very sportingly in a fair game.

Going still further, if Gen. Musharraf wanted to play mischief to satisfy his ego, he could have influenced the judiciary to succumb to his will exactly the way the late Gen. Zia had done for the late Premier of Pakistan, Zulfikhar Ali Bhutto. To get the verdict passed against Bhutto, Gen. Zia even went to the extent of making mockery of Pakistani Court by allowing to conduct the court proceedings minus one Judge. Bhutto was hanged thru the mischief of the Court while Chawdry Saab was reinstated thru the uprightness of Pakistani Judiciary plus that of the great heartedness of Gen. Musharraf.

Margaret Thatcher after the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein passed a remark that “never appeasement to the dictators” and rightly it should be. Dictators are dictators whether in civilian dress or in Military uniforms. They are always power hungry and to satisfy their urge for more and more powers they will do anything. I don’t know whether it was his own personal decision or he was advised by the Americans to surrender to the will of the Supreme Court but by doing this Gen. Musharraf put his opponents out of the track. It was a very clever move on the part of General. Pakistan is at the moment on the boiling point due to internal trouble and also due to the trouble at its borders touching Afghanistan. When this is the case, accepting silently the court verdict in favour of Justice Chawdry was a very prudent step Gen. Musharraf has taken and thus saved the country from further chaos. As it is, two gigantic opponents of General, both former Premiers of Pakistan are in readiness to pounce on him at any moment if he loosens the belt he is holding. Though his enemies are many craving for reintroduction of democracy yet his supporters for his dictatorship are also many who are his source of strength.

But, I feel before the point of saturation is reached vi-sa-vis people's aspirations for reintroduction of democracy in Pakistan, Gen. Musharraf must read the writings on the wall and submit to the wishes of the populace in Pakistan. After all the nation is important and not an individual. A genuine patriotic person will surrender to the will of the people instead of holding on to power acquired illegally. Otherwise, something which is attached illegally will also detach illegally. This is just a law of nature.

While concluding, let me salute Pakistani Judiciary for being fearless, independent and just.

Goan Memories of 2nd August...--Part III

2nd of August this year will be 17th anniversary of the brutal invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi regime under its dictator Saddam Hussein. Along with all others residing in Kuwait in 1990, 2nd August, a huge Goan community comprising around 25 thousand was also caught unaware.
Part III
Many Kuwait Goan evacuees came for our Rally from distant places in specially hired buses. One such bus came from Sanguem thru the leadership of the late Jack Santan Fernandes of Commercial Bank of Kuwait. Unfortunately, he was not recalled by his Bank after the liberation. According to one source instruction was given by the top Boss to recall Jack but it was his own immediate Goan superior from Cansaulim who rejected Jack giving an excuse that Jack is not interested in returning to Kuwait. This Cansaulimkar was jealous of Jack's contribution in the promotion of G-KSC while he never supported us. Regretably, this type of cruel fate was faced by many of our Goans, associates and supporters. Others who came by especial buses were our supporters from Navelim thru the efforts of Elvino Rodrigues, Thomas, Luis and others while more buses came from Colva thru the efforts of Alleluia, Tiatrist Mario and their colleagues; Verna thru the efforts of Tiatrist Francis de Verna and his colleagues; Agacaim thru the efforts of Sheikh Agnelo and his friends. For these buses everybody spent money from his or her own pockets. There were no Buses nor the so called prominent people in Kuwait from AVC nor from Curtorim nor from Sanvordem nor from Majorda nor from Utorda though many of the people from these villages working in Kuwait are making big noise in Kuwait either individually or thru their associations.
Besides coming in especial buses, individuals came from different places from all over Goa namely Aldona, Pomburpa, Saligao, Nagoa Bardez, Mapusa, Siolim, Tivim, Calangute, Candolim, Pilerne, Merces, St. Cruz, Cortalim, Cancona, Margao, Vasco and many other palces.

While we the Konknnivadis in Goa raising Kuwait’s banner with pride against Saddam Hussein, our Konknnivadi brothers in Mangalore and Bombay were doing nothing to emulate our feat even though in Kuwait some of them were and still are acting like big persons. I was expecting KCWA would come forward and emulate our example because KCWA from Kuwait accumulated huge fund for them. They should have realized that if it was not for Kuwait they would never accumulate such a big fund. They failed to recognize that minus Kuwait many of them would be nowhere in life. And inspite of all these benefits they failed to show their solidarity openly and publicly with the suffering Kuwait and Kuwaitis during the invasion of Kuwait. In Mangalorean Konkani community there are so many affluent people but during this period their affluence turned out to be hollow. They proved to be materially affluent but intellectually bankrupt. I was surprised how even their priests who receive so much of financial aid from KCWA did not advise them to emulate our example. They also remained indeferent to the woes of Kuwait like our Goan priests? After all priests are priests, whether from Goa or Mangalore or Bombay. They are the birds of same feathers. They, like Indian politicians, will all laugh with you when you are laughing but will refuse to cry with you when you cry.

A. Veronica Fernandes addressing the rally
Our movement in Goa under Goa-Kuwait Solidarity Center within a night gained worldwide attention thru media and thru air waves, even CNN highlighted our Rally and Puiblic Meeting held in Panjim at Azad Maidan which was attended by some Kuwaitis as well including a prominent and a top officer in the Ministry of Interior, Col. Juma Al Kholifi. He was a like a representative of the real Government of Kuwait under the leadership of Amir of Kuwait. In his speech at Azad Maidan he made the gathering cry. This small step of ours turned out to be a gigantic one even alerting and informing Kuwaiti Embassy in Delhi and Kuwaiti Government in exile stationed at Taif in Saudi Arabia of what we Goans did for the cause of Kuwait.

Ministry of Interior, Col. Juma Al Kholifi kissing the Kuwaiti flag

All who were under the impression that Kuwait Goans were docile and "copist" were shocked to know of our bold steps in support of Kuwait. We were not docile and not copist, the docile and copists were those who refrained from supporting us and those who refused to join us in our movement for the cause of Kuwait. The docile and ungratefuls Kuwait Goan evacuees were those who were sleeping at home during our Rally on 12th November 1990.

Rowla Lewis: Amazing ‘discovery’ of BLACK

Rowla Lewis: Amazing ‘discovery’ of BLACK
By gasper crasto

It’s clear that a lot of the film's epitome rests on the presence of its female stars. The screen presence of Rowla Lewis, one of the Mangalore-ian artistes to feature in ‘BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion’ – the Konkani E-Cinema set for release on August 10, 2007 at Masrah, Hawalli Auditorium, will definitely leave the audience awestruck.

The young, angelic face is one stars of the movie having some catchy scenes. She is one of the most amazing ‘discovery’ of the film along with many other non-professionals artistes.

Coming from a family with original roots in Udupi - Mangalore, Rowla was born in Kuwait, studied at Kuwait’s Carmel School and later graduated from Manipal College of Management, Mangalore. She is currently working for Carrier Kuwait Air-conditioning Est.

About her role in the movie, Rowla says, “I always liked the idea of acting out characters from books that I'd read…It's one of those things where you read books and think, 'I'd love to play this part.' And you actually get to do it. That's pretty surreal for me. To tell about my role would kill the surprise. Watch BLACK to find out...Shhhh... Nothing to tell! Forget my role, watch the movie, it should keep everyone riveted to their seats!”

Talking about the shooting of BLACK, the actress says, “Initially, it was intimidating to be a part of the movie with established actresses such as Gracy Morais, Querobina and others. I was so nervous on the first day of my shoot!.. But then everyone was so nice, and immediately they made me feel really comfortable which allowed me to be myself.”

Rowla further adds, “There were some really funny moments on the sets which I cherish. I recall we had to shoot a sad scene which had to be done at least 8 times because none of the cast was serious – someone or the other would crack out a smile or would be seen controlling hard to hold a laugh which made everyone else to burst out laughing! The main cast involved in this scene were so agitated by this that some of them had quirky faces by the time the final ‘take’ was done. T-Bush kept telling us to be serious and NOT to laugh, but..... even he could not stop laughing even when others were dead serious..”

Born and brought up in Kuwait, and used to speaking English in all spheres of life, Rowla has delivered her dialogues in a fluent Konkani dialect. “Although I did little rehearsals on the sets, I was able to deliver my dialogues with perfect ease. I wish to be a role model to the new generation in speaking our language which ultimately identifies us to our culture and native place of origin.”
Speaking about the director of BLACK, Rowla says, “T-Bush is unique as a person - calm, steady and focused -- a strong magnetic personality and awfully nice to deal with - constantly encouraging the cast members especially during trying times of the shoot. To keep control of 20 to 25 artistes at one time and draw the best out of them is in itself a great achievement for a director.”

On her message to the Konkani speaking masses around the world, the little actress says, “All Konkani speaking people should patronize the movie wherever it is screened. This way, young filmmakers like T-Bush will get more encouragement to explore further into their creativity... Anyway, I am sure people who watch this movie would demand T-Bush make another Konkani film immediately!”

On her personal expectations from BLACK, Rowla says, “I have not taken this opportunity to appear in the film as a path to 'fame'. I would love to continue acting in future for the sole purpose of promoting our language and amusing others!”

Her ultimate fantasy, however, is not so eclectic. "It would be like a dream if I got to act in Hindi films," she exclaims. And that, along with the continuing break to act in good roles, just may boost this young girl to legend status.

More detail on the main characters in the film and their role will be presented in these pages to keep readers engaged and fully in tune running down to the release. For more on T-Bush International films log on to http://www.t-bush.com Email: films@t-bush.com

Goan Memories of 2nd August...--Part II

Part II

2nd of August this year will be 17th anniversary of the brutal invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi regime under its dictator Saddam Hussein. Along with all others residing in Kuwait in 1990, 2nd August, a huge Goan community comprising around 25 thousand were also caught unaware.
The initiative for the formation of Goa-Kuwait Solidarity center was purely my brainwork, my means the brainchild of a Konknnivadi and that too a Romivadi and it was supported by all my Romi Konknnivadi colleagues who as usual backed me up to move ahead. My first proposal was to call a meeting of like minded Goans in Goa to inform them of this idea and accordingly a public meeting was called on 3rd November 1990 of Kuwait evacuees thru media announcement and it was held in Panjim at T.B. Cunha Hall where about 100 Goans only attended when there were thousands available in Goa. All supported my idea and we took a decision to organize a Morcha – Rally – on the streets in Panjim on 12th November 1990. When this Morcha was finally organized, it was attended only by hundreds - Not Thousands - of Kuwait evacuee Goans when regretfully overwhelming majority numbering around 10 thousands especially those earning fat salaries in the Banks, KOC, KPC, KNPC, KAC and other lucrative sectors did not join us. For most of them the issue of Kuwait was like a gone case, Kuwait will not be liberated and as such what was the use of coming on to the streets in support of the liberation of Kuwait?
Overwhelming majority of female Kuwait evacuees refused to join us because by coming on to the streets in a show of public demonstration was lowering their prestige, many of them felt it was like a shame for them but they never felt ashamed when they flirted like whores and concubines in Kuwait with Tom – Harry & Dick for the sake of money, honey and promotions to gain more benefits Many of these females if at all they received little importance in life it was only because they were working in Kuwait. Otherwise who cared them in life and in Goa? Out of over 10 thousand male and female Kuwait returnees hardly a thousand attended our Rally in support of Kuwait, the country that fed us, the country that gave us employment, the country that gave us identity in life and the country that gave us so many benefits in life. To turn our back to Kuwait at this juncture was really an act of ingratitude and betrayal. It was an un-Goan act.

Most of the Goans holding good jobs especially in lucrative sectors were having very pitiable economic and social status in Goa but they have improved their ratings only after coming to Kuwait. Yet they failed to recognise the positive impact Kuwait has created on their personal lives. One thing I noticed in such people that for the sake of money they will do anything, even they would lick the boots of Saddam Hussein because back home in Goa they starved of money. Hence, their over craze and over consciousness for money. When the Banking sector employees after the invasion of Kuwait were called to resume their duties, amongst others Goans also rushed instead of rejecting this offer, as a mark of protest against the invasion of Kuwait..

In pre-invasion period in Kuwait there were so many prominent Goans and prominent Goan Associations and Clubs but the moment they were evacuated free of charge by the Government of India they all or at least majority of them went into deep and long sleep like Rip Van Winkle. That they went into deep sleep I came to know only when they failed to participate in our meetings and in our first Rally on 12th November 1990 in Pajim, Goa, all organized for the cause of Kuwait. We needed financial and other help of all to promote our activities but those who minted money from Kuwait they remained at home. The millionaires who made millions in Kuwait like Avertano Furtado never even bothered to show his solidarity with the suffering Kuwait by associating with us. Mr. A. B. Fernandes the General Manager of Bahar Shipping and a prominent Goan figure in Kuwait was totally absent from our movement even though he made fortune by working in Kuwait for about 30 years and earned name and fame for him.

Prominent Goan figures in Kuwait like Vincente D’Souza who has done so much for the cause of Goa and Goans from Kuwait and who was considered as one of the leaders of Kuwait Goan community refrained from supporting our movement. Blandino Viegas the President of Kuwait Indian Football Federation not only not joined us but it looked he considered our support to Kuwait as against the interest of India. UG President, Kuwait Goan Association President, the major portion of Kuwait Tiatrists were nowhere closer to us. Some of the current leading and noise making in the media Tiatrists in Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha were sleeping at home. Overwhelming majority of Goans involved in soccer at Sour Grounds showed their deslike for our movement in support of Kuwait. Some of those who are making a big show now at Sour Grounds including some referees like Sarto Batista and Bernardo were then Goa based Goans but they were not sucking the breast of their mothers, they were grown up and matured. Still they never supported us. They want Kuwait only to make money and not to support Kuwait when Kuwait was in need of it. Most of the prominent persons in Kuwait Goan Clubs and Kuwait Goan Associations have totally failed to show their open support to Kuwait.

Likewise so many well known and prominent Goans who were and still making a big show of them in Kuwait in one way or the other not only refused to support Kuwait by joining us but many of them opposed me in particular for organizing this movement as if by supporting Kuwait openly I am committing an anti-Kuwait act. Regretfully and unfortunately, most of the people involved in the Kuwait Church affairs and Church Circle have showed their negative attitude to Kuwait by remaining aloof from Goa Kuwait Solidarity Center in Goa. I thought they would show their big heartedness which they must have gained in the Church circle, by associating with us. But no, they turned out to be ungratefuls not only to Kuwait but even to God. Generally speaking many times people associating in Church affairs are most dangerous. Worst of cruelties and ingratitudes are committed by them only and yet they act like Saints. For this reason, one must believe in one principle "beware of the Pujari".

Goan Memories of 2nd August...!

Goan Memories of 2nd August...!
Goan Memories of 2nd August...!

Goan community is one of the expatriate communities in Kuwait that gained so much from Kuwait. As a gratitude it was our duty to stand by Kuwait during its critical time. Hence, after returning back in October 1990 from invaded Kuwait, when all others failed to accept the responsibility inspite of holding responsible positions in Kuwait to lead Kuwait Goan evacuees, I came forward. And with the usual co-operation of my close associates I took an initiative to form Goa-Kuwait Solidairity Center to raise Goan voice by organising Public Meetings and Rallies against the invasion of Kuwait and in support of the liberation of Kuwait. By forming Goa-Kuwait Solidarity Center movement we again proved that we were capable of rising to any intellectual height.

I am a Konknnivadi and that too a proud Romivadi. My contribution for the cause of Konkani is second to none amongst the expatriate Goans spread all around the globe. Why amongst Goans only? I feel most probably none in the expatriate Konkani world has done what I have done. Amongst the expatriates, the biggest initiatives for the greater good of Goan World and Konkani World have been taken by me. Why biggest initiatives only? I have also supported biggest causes for the good of Goa, Goans and Konkani. Why I was successful in such decisions? Because my colleagues and supporters were very strong and they stood by me thru thick and thin till success was achieved. I feel proud that a Konknnivadi like me with the backing of all our Konknni supporters could move ahead and at a faster pace.

When I first came to Kuwait the semi literate, the intellectually bankrupt, the socially backward and all who suffered inferiority complex in life because of their intellectually poor family background were having poor opinion of Konknni and Konknnivadis. In me, in my colleagues and in my supporters they all found their opinions wrong and we proved to all of them that they were nothing in front of our intellectual might, knowledge, sincerity and dedication. We the genuine Konknnivadis proved our poor opponents that we are capable of doing wonders and in fact we did for the cause of our community. If at all Konknnivadis were looked down by some it was and it is because of the shabby nature of some of our Konknnivadis who are bringing Konknni into disrepute. We do not fall into their category.
One of the major achievements of our initiatives was the establishment of GOA - KUWAIT SOLIDARITY CENTER in Goa during the invasion of Kuwait. G-KSC was established in Goa on 3rd November 1990 to raise our voice against the invasion of Kuwait by the brutal Iraqi regime under the leadership of its dictator Saddam Hussein. The invasion of Kuwait was a big blow to all of us. It took place on 2nd August 1990. I was caught by the Iraqi soldiers early in the morning on that fateful Thursday below my building at 6.30 A.M. when I was going to work. I never knew Iraqi Military has already occupied Kuwait city.

I could not believe my eyes when I saw the soliders manning the Kuwait city streets were really Iraqis. I could not accept the reality when I saw two Iraqi soldiers entering the Maliya Police Station by kicking the main door. On the road the entire vehicular traffic came to an abrupt halt. The Iraqi soldiers with gunpoint were pulling the drivers of the cars, buses and other vehicles out of their seats living the engines on only.

Till previous night everything seemed to be moving in right direction for Kuwait and suddenly in the next morning one comes to know that Kuwait was invaded by Iraq? Rubbish!! Unbelievable!! How can this be possible especially when Kuwait is a brotherly country, brotherly in race, religion, culture and tradition? Even though I noticed fully the invading troops of Iraq yet my mind was not admitting that Iraq has invaded Kuwait because in normal circumstances it is not possible to happen since both Iraq and Kuwait are members of UNO, Arab League and NAM which all forbid settling of bilateral disputes through the use of force. But Saddam Hussein and his Cabinet made mockery of all these great organizations established to prevent invasion of one country by the other.

Saddam Hussein, it looked, said to these organizations which came into being after the II World War, go to hell with your strictures and constitutions, I will do what I want. And in fact he did what he wanted to do. He did not even pay little respect for Organisation of Islamic Conference that prohibits use of force by a member country against another Muslim member country. Kuwait and Iraq are members of OIC. By invading Kuwait, Iraq a Muslim country hurt the sanctity of the edicts of OIC.

RESPONSE TO HUMBLE SALAZAR.

Response to "Humble Salazar" by Teotonio R. de Souza from Portugal.

Dear Veronica,

Firstly, I am glad to see my response to your earlier posting online in KRANTI. But in today's "Humble Salazar" you seem to go overboard in your appreciation of Salazar despite repeated charges against him as "dictator". At the very start of your posting you claim that just because you lived under the Portuguese colonial regime you had to accept Salazar. I would beg to differ: If we had to accept a regime however it behaves, nothing would change. India could still continue under British colonial rule, and the Germans could continue under Hitler, etc.

In the closing paragraphs you berate the Goans who have retained or reclaimed Portuguese citizenship as ungrateful, just because they may not like Salazar. There are thousands of native Portuguese who hate Salazar and the memory of his regime. They should be ungrateful too? Besides, Portugal is not to be equated with Salazar, just as any of us cannot be equated with our passing nightmares! There are many other political forces that make Portugal tick!
I did not for once consider the idea of moving to Portugal (Brasil was also on cards) before 1986, that is, before Portugal was admitted to EU. It has made all the difference to a politically unstable that Portugal was and could continue to be without this development.
This are my honest reflections and feelings with all due respect to yours.

Sincerely,
Teotonio R. de Souza.

Was it a blessing for him to accomplish his mission on this planet as a Tiatrist to complete all the 7 roles? Great indeed!! ..........

Goa's First Uprising Against the Portuguese

-Armstrong Vaz, Doha Qatar

Unlike other parts of India, Goa, was ruled by the Portuguese from 1510 to 1961. British rule ended in 1947.

An uprising against the colonial Portuguese rulers launched by a small village -- Cuncolim -- some 48 kilometers from the state capital of Panjim in 1583 has gone largely unnoticed.

The Portuguese first conquered Goa in 1510 and Cuncolim was the first uprising that the Portuguese had to face in Goa apart from the organized armies and rulers who fought different wars with them over a period of time.

The villagers of Cuncolim, comprised mostly of Khastriyas (a warrior caste) who rendered services for different armies of different rulers, fought the war over forceful conversions and the destruction and defiling of their temples and places of worship.

But the Cuncolim revolt may soon find its way into local history books if the assertions of Shantaram Naik, who is from the village, are reliable. A lawmaker who is a member of Rajya Sabha, the Upper House (India has two houses of parliament) has said the Cuncolim revolt will find its way into the school curriculum.

The revolt took shape as a popular rebellion against invading Portuguese who came to the village accompanied by Jesuits, an order of Roman Catholic priests, and destroyed temples and defiled Hindu religious places.

The villagers retaliated by organizing themselves. Five Jesuits lost their lives along with five laymen.

The five priests have since being canonized by the Roman Catholic Church as martyrs, but the laymen have not received such treatment. (See Catholic-forum.com and Newadvent.org for more information.)

The murdered priests were canonized because their bodies, despite being left in the well for a few days, did not emit any foul smell. Rather, they emitted "special aromas," which was the only factor in their canonization process.

A "martyrs' chapel" was erected, dedicated to the priests and layman killed in 1583. Another chapel, some 500 meters away, which is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Goa, was the site where the bodies of the murdered priests were dumped in a well.

The well still stands today inside the chapel and is opened for people to view once a year during the feast of St. Xavier, celebrated in the first week of December.

The Cuncolim villagers had to face the fury of the Portuguese for having killed the five priests and five laymen. The Portuguese destroyed orchards in the village and unleashed many atrocities on the local population. More trouble was in store for them.

The village chieftains were invited for talks at a fort in the neighboring village of Assolna, where the church of Assolna stands today. All but one was executed. The one who survived did so by escaping through a toilet hole to swim across the "River Sal" and fleeing to the neighboring Karwar district, which now forms part of the southern state of Karnataka.

As part of the memory of the murdered village chieftains, Cuncolim as recently as five years ago erected a "chieftains' memorial" thanks to the initiative of Vermissio Coutinho, who took the lead in the building of the memorial. The chieftains' memorial stands close to the martyrs' chapel.

The subsequent execution of the chieftains -- cold-blooded murder -- did not diminish the fighting and valorous qualities of the villagers. After the Khastriyas of Cuncolim failed to match the superior armed forces of the colonial rulers, who destroyed their orchards and unleashed other atrocities, the villagers continued the struggle through a non-cooperation movement of not paying taxes to the Portuguese.

Centuries later, Mahatma Gandhi would launch a similar movement of not paying taxes to British rulers.

The villages of Cuncolim, Velim, Assolna, Ambleim and Veroda refused to pay taxes on the produce generated from their fields and orchards. As a result, their lands were confiscated and entrusted to the Condado of the Marquis of Fronteira.

The villagers waged a strong struggle but it was through the efforts of the visionary Dr. Rogociano Rebello, a general medical practitioner who studied law, that they got their land back.

He took their case from the Goa law courts established by the Portuguese to the highest court in Portugal. Finally, it bore fruit.

A truce has been struck but the effect of opposing Portuguese rule has had long-lasting effects, even to this day.

The forceful conversion of the villagers forced those of Cuncolim to move their places of Worship to different places. One of the temples of the goddess Shri Shantadurga Cuncolikarian was moved to the neighboring village of Fatorpa some seven kilometers away.

The villagers rejoice once a year when the same goddess is brought in a ceremonial procession from Fatorpa to Cuncolim. The 12 colorful umbrellas accompanying the deity represent the 12 vangodds (clans) of the village.

Incidentally, this year's yearly zatra (one week festival) falls on Dec. 24. Residents from various part of Goa will come together during the festival to get the blessing of the deity.

The villagers, despite having to convert to Christianity, have confirmed their age-old Hindu customs and maintained their caste beliefs. They also have a 12 vangodd system running the church's affairs.

The Khastriyas (warrior caste) who claim to be the original residents of the village, called Gaunkars (original inhabitants), have carried the Hindu caste system into the Roman Catholic Church and are demanding that they have a hold over the running of the affairs of the Cuncolim church, a view which has not been taken lightly by church authorities.

The Gaunkars claim that the Cuncolim church was built by their forefathers and that they have the right to conduct the religious festivals of the Cuncolim church, compared to non-Gaunkars who belong to the lower caste. No Brahmin families are found in the village of Cuncolim.

The dominant stance of the Khastriyas have seen many a struggle over the last 30 years and even led to church services being suspended for some months in the early 1980s.

Despite all this, the villagers of Cuncolim are braced for a new beginning.

HUMBLE SALAZAR

HUMBLE SALAZAR

Dr. Antonio Oliveira Salazar was not my uncle. He was the ruler of Portugal and since Goa was under Portuguese regime till December 1961, I had to accept him as my ruler too. Though he was a dictator and since I don’t like dictators yet I had to accept his dictatorship as the ruler of Portugal. Dictators are always bad. Soon after the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein, Margaret Thatcher the then Premier of UK was in USA visiting President Bush Sr. When she got the news of the invasion of Kuwait, she made a scathing attack on Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein saying “dictators are dictators. There should be no appeasement for dictators anytime and anywhere”. No doubt Salazar was a dictator but he was not a brute dictator like Saddam Hussein. Salazar did not wage his wars against others as Saddam Hussein did.

Saddam Hussein was bad in all angles while Salazar inspite of being a dictator and harsh in certain angles, had lot of good qualities and lot of humility though to some naked eyes it may look he was a good dramatist. May be Salazar was during his lifetime in politics was a political “Tiatrist” but for that matter we all human beings are also Tiatrists, to quote William Shakesphere in his last Drama “As You Like It”. I think Salazar played all the 7 roles of one’s lifetime as indicated by Shakesphere including the last role of “Sans Teeth, Sans Eyes, Sans Ears, Sans Limbs”. Was it a blessing for him to accomplish his mission on this planet as a Tiatrist to complete all the 7 roles? Great indeed!!

Prof. Eduardo D’Souza from Pilerne Bardez was my Professor at Escola Primaria de Abade Faria, Candolim. He was staying in Candolim in a big house near the Tinto. He was an aristocrat but very strict. He used to give corporal punishment to us, his students in such a way that one of the boys suffered permanent deformity in one of his ears. And yet due to his influence he could get way with all these atrocities against students. Though he was strict yet he was a very good teacher. Somehow or the other he was found in creating some malpractices to acquire the Candolim house and in the ensuring court case he was found guilty and sentenced for imprisonment and sent to Aguada Prison.

It was unimaginable that time in 1960 to know such a Pro-Portuguese Bamon Bhattkar with his vast influence in Goa could face such a fate. But it happened. He challenged the court decision while serving his term in Prison at Aguada and finally he directly wrote from Aguada Prison to Salazar in Lisbon detailing all his grievances and stating that he was falsely implicated in this case.

To his surprise and to the surprise of everyone, Prof. Eduardo received immediate and direct reply from Salazar saying “I will check your case with the concerned authorities”. When this process was going on, Goa meantime was annexed by Bharat. Now, my point of writing these few lines on Salazar’s reply to Prof. Eduardo D’Souza is to highlight the simplicity and humility and strong sense of administrative discipline of Salazar. I don’t think in this act of Salazar there was a touch of “Tiatristpon” unless one has to impose it on Salazar.

Would our “Panpotti” Premiers in Delhi reply to our letters in Goa? I doubt and I don’t think either. During Portuguese time we Goans were treated in many respects much better by the Portuguese colonialists than what we are treated now by Delhi colonialists even though I don’t ask for colonial rule. Mahatma Gandhi called Dellivalas as Indian colonialists. During the Salazarist time our voice was audible but now we are made unimportant in our own land by our so called brothers from Delhi. During Salazarist time in Goa there was law and order and discipline was existing nicely but now it is free for all because Goa is ruled by “Chors” from Goa and Delhi itself.

During Salazar’s time the representative of Salazar was listening to us and doing what is good for Goans but now one small creature from Mangalore Margareth Alva who was rejected in Mangalore by her own Mangalorean people but accepted by Delhivalas is destroying the whole political outlook of Goa by not listening to the voice of Goans. During Salazar’s time in Goa we were just bowing down our heads with respect in front of white skinners from Lisboa but now we have to kiss the feet with reverence of the "chors" and "bamttes" from Delhi wearing white Dhoti and white Gandhi “Topi” and yet we call ourselves independents.

Before the forcible acquisition of Goa by Bharat under Nehru’s Congress, Salazar no doubt told Governador Vassalo e Silva to destroy Goa which was not right yet Salazar gave all freedom for all Goans to leave Goa and come to Portugal instead of falling into the hands of invaders and conquerors who will treat Goans as second class citizens, especially Christians. How prophetic Salazar was!!. What he prophesized then is coming into reality in Goa.

A month before the acquisition of Goa by Bharat, Salazar sent special Ship to Goa to take back not only Portuguese people mainly the females and children back to Portugal but he even kept in readiness more ships for any number of Goans willing to come to Portugal. That we did not go was another matter. But some of the Goans who made Portuguese Passports and migrated to Portugal and still talk ill of Portugal and Salazar are ungrateful Goans.

Salazar had his flaws, so also we all of us. It is not Portugal that needs Goyemkars but it is Goyemkars that need Portugal for this reason now almost every second or third Goykar is craving for Portuguese Passport. Those Goans who are living in Portugal and still talking ill of Portugal are “beiman”. They are not true to the land of their domicile neither to their lamd of birth. They are to be treated as Judases. It is the system Salazar promoted in Portugal that helped these traitors to enjoy the benefits of Portugal.

I dislike Salazar for being Dictator yet I admire him for inculcating a sense of discipline and morality in us, the citizens of Portugal in Goa. These attributes are great in us and precisely because of this Goan is unique not only in India but in the entire subcontinent. The greatest attribute of a Goan is his sense of gratitude which we acquired due to the long years of Portuguese rule in Goa.

If a Goan calls himself a Goan and feels proud about his Goan nature than he should have the sense of gratitude – only a Ghantti from Bharat will have sense of ingratitude. Those people who are enjoying all the benefits of Portuguese Government in Portugal and still talk ill of Portugal than they are traitors. Those Goykars who enjoy the benefit of Portuguese Passport and still talk ill of Portugal then these Goykars are not real Goykars. The credit for making Goans unique in India should also go to Portugal under Salazar.

BEST TIATRISTS DURING PORTUGUESE TIME

BEST TIATRISTS DURING PORTUGUESE TIME.

In his remark on my recent article on "Memory of Yesteryear Tiatrists", Dr. Teotonio R. De Souza, Lisboa, said:

"For instance, you emphasize the fact that the best tiatrists and Konkani singers were produced during the Portuguese times and performed at the Emissora de Goa. Why would that be?"

The following is my answer:

First of all let us admit that Tiatro was born during the time of Portuguese time about 115 years back and it was initiated by a Goa born, Goa educated Goan Lucasinho Ribeiro from Assagao Bardez who was ably supported in his endeavours by Joao Agostinho Fernandes from Margao who because of his enermous contribution for the promotion of this beautiful art rightly called by the elders as "Pai Tiatristancho". Though Joao Agostinho Fernandes worked so hard for pushing Tiatro art forward yet he "bowed down his head in front of Lucazinho Ribeiro" with due respect to his initiative.

During the Portuguese time for commoners the Church School known as Parochial School was part of the life, not only for young boys, even for girls. During my time in my class at our village Parochial School there were many girls. This school lasted till the end of Portuguese rule. I still remember how in the mornings I was going for Portuguese school in my village at Escola Primaria de Abade Faria and in the afternoons I was going to Parochial school. Earlier before joining Portuguese school, it was a full day Parochial school for me. Besides Konkani in Romi script, we were also taught reading and writing Portuguese but more time was devoted for singing, music learning thru Arte (Music Book) and playing and learning Violin. While learning music and Violin, you come accross so many beautiful tunes and beautiful musical notes. While you are engrossed in this type of musical charm, your mind automatically moves to creative works in music.

Most of our yesteryear Tiatrists were the products of Parochial Schools in their respective villages. By undergoing schooling in Parochail school, you had to be good if not very good in music either thru written Solfa Notes or Reading Solfa Notes or by just thru Hearing. In Parochial School you were taught how to sing, how to adhere to the timings, how to sing in different voices. A student schooled in Parochial school had to acquire mastery in singing if not in reading, writing and playing musical notes.

The early Tiatrists were not highly educated thru University degrees. The maximum was Segundograu or below matriculation if they were previlleged to get the paid English education. During Portuguese time, Portuguese education was free while for English education one had to pay the monthly fees. Otherwise academic career in Parochail Schools was the last step normally in most of the yesteryear Tiatrists.

Somehow or the other, during those days the Goan youth had a creative mind. He had a mastery of Konkani language and being so he was well equipped in local history, tradition, idioms, proverbs, folktales and folklore. Our songs are always based on ryming in the ending. Amongst the Tiatrists, Young Menezes was extremely good in applying appropriate rymings for his songs. To frame such rymings and compose songs in this way it is not an easy task. Only if you have the mastery of the language then only you can have the free flow of the expressions to compose songs with appropriate words for rymings. This is one aspect of composing a beautiful song. The other aspect is framing music for the song. The tune has to be good and fitting and then only the song becomes beautiful. The yesteryear tiatrists being the products of Parochial schools they had the mastery of music which helped them to brighten the beauty of their songs. Based on the theme of the song the music had to be composed for that particular song. If it is sentimental story then sentimental tune had to be composed and framed for that song. In the composition of sentimental tune yesteryear Tiatrists were the best because they in Parochial schools learnt to sing "Motets" which are having most sentimental tunes. Minguel Rod was a genius in composing such sentimental songs after Aristedes Dias, followed by M. Boyer. These sentimental songs in our Tiatros are called "Cantos". Minguel Rod was the great admirer of Motets while Alexinho de Candolim was a genius in singing Motets. Once as a small Choir boy in my village I had the previllege to sing with him a Motet in our Church.

According to my observation only 3 tiatrists composed the most sentimental cantos in their Tiatros and up to now nobody reached to their levels. You see one in "Ghorib Sesari" Tiatro of Minguel Rod, in one of the scenes while singing that great Canto "Adlem Mojem Vidh, Kon Deva portun diit", Kiryadakoddem Mezar kheutalom jith", not only the singers cry but the entire audience as well. It was so touching, not only in words but more than that in sentimental tune that it hits your heart deep. After listening to this song, Maestro Pedrinho, Mestiri of Anjuna Bardez Church showed his desire to play a solo on his Violin - ad verbatim - that tune for the "Satvo Pass" in Anjuna Church instead of a Motet. Whether he did it or not I am not aware. The other best sentimental song was in "Doia" Tiatro of Airestedes Dias. It was in 1959 I saw. This was the canto Conception in a very tragic circumstances as a blind man sang thus: "Oh Ba-e ani Babu, ek Poiso ghala-a re, ek poiso ghala-a re. Gala re, vadda re, kud'deachi doia kora re, kora re.". Here again I saw how people were crying in the audience. Such songs and Cantos are not existing now. The third best sentimental song was composed by Mr. Boyer in his Tiatro "Sounsar Sudorlo". It was a beautiful sentimental song rendered by melodious singer Alfred Rose. That song was "Ekuch Foll dilolem dhonia". No doubt this song and its tune were very beautiful yet the golden voice of golden singer of Konkani stage Alfred Rose made it more beautiful and more sentimental. Oh God!! Will we again be blessed by another singer like him?
The present day Tiatrists and mainly those came into limelight after the Portugese and Emissora de Goa era was over, cannot compose such rich songs with rich music and rich tunes, as we say in our parlance. Most of today's Tiatrists are ignorant of Solfas and as such they cannot apply good tunes to their songs. The yesteryear Tiatrists had genuinness in their songs and originality, so also in the plots of their Tiatros. Today's many Tiatrists especially many of those who came up in life after Portuguese era are "CHORS" because they are borrowing and robbing everything from Hindi Films and applying in our Tiatros, in our songs and thus prostituting our Tiatros and our songs. Hindi Films have got Hindi culture, tradition and history while we have ours whcih are totally different from Hindi. Our culture is not harsh, our history is not brute and our tradition is not vulgar. We dont burn our brides for dowry though isolated incidents can occur. But many of the Tiatrists developed after Portuguese era introduced in their Tiatros such cruel stories which are totally foreign to our Goan culture. Many of the Non-Stop Tiatrists are more culprits in this case. They want everything readymade from Hindi Films. Most of the Non-Stop Tiatrists are not having creative minds, they rely for everything on their Directors who sometimes rely on Hindi Films. Non-Stop Tiatrists are like Parrots. The negative sides they show is o.k. in Hindi Films because it is meant for Hindi audience who practice such attroticies in their midst. It is o.k. for backward people to watch Hindi Films and copy everything rubbish from there. But it is not o.k. for us. We dont perform such attrocities as shown in Hindi Films as performed in Hindi world. Hindi culture is "Sala Banchot" while ours is not. Goa is corrupted only thru the introduction of Hindi culture. Goa is vulgarised only thru Hindi culture which all came into Goa mainly thru Hindi Films and thru the influx of non-Goans after the exit of Portuguese. And our ignorant, illiterate and intellectually pigmy tiatrists having no choice have introduced non Goan Hindi cultural habbits in our Tiatros thereby prostituting our great, decent and intellectually high Tiatros.

The yesteryear Tiatrists were rich in knowledge, wisdom, discipline, morality and many other attributes. Though they were not University graduates yet they were well read in many subjects of different nature. Reading Romansi of Damaciano Caridade means reading Shakesphere. Reading Bombay's Weeklies namely The Goa Mail, The Goa Times, Ave Maria and Dhor Mhoineachi Rotti etc. means one had to be a genius in knowledge. For this reason songs of yesteryear Tiatrists were full of knowledge, wisdom and enlightenment. Average Tiatrist of today is not a well read nor well equipped with good knowledge. So many times top visiting Tiatrists are coming to Kuwait and staying at my place but other than comedian Agostinho rarely others are showing interest in reading local dailies, leave aside local, they dont even like to read Goa's dailies which I read regularly.

For this reason, I say yesteryear Tiatrists were great and nobody will take away their places already decorated in the history of Tiatros and Tiatrists. The history of Tiatrists are better known to commoner Goans only who had the distinction of watching Tiatro from childhood. The so called elite Goans always looked upon Tiatro and Tiatrists with disdain. The so called Goan elite class including clergy showed desliked for Tiatro and Tiatrists as if it was an Art of Pagans.
This so called elite class of Goan have not done anything to promote and protect Tiatro Art.

Re: Salazar

Dear Veronica,

You have a very one-sided picture of Salazar. He was a much more subtle personality: As reported once by a Vatican envoy, Fr. Mateo Crawley, sent by Pius XI, he was « a person with insatiable amibitions».

The French lady writer, Christine Garnier, who interviewed Salazar several times to the extent of her visits being interpreted by some as a secret romance, wrote once that she saw in him a «subtle and cruel sensibility».

He could be very intimate and delicate, but could be icy and distant the next moment. All in all, he was also a good «tiatrist» and knew when to make himself look very simple and humble as in the cited case of Fr. Chico's hat! Salazar had serious tiffs with the Vatican, particularly in the wake of the trends that resulted in Vatican II. Salazar resented the decision of Paul VI to participate in the Eucharistic Congress of Mumbai, as a violation of the Padroado Rights of Portugal, particularly in the wake of the appointment of new cardinal of Mumbai, bypassing the Portuguese claims that the Patriarch of Goa, D. José Costa Neves should have occupied that position! He exiled the Bishop of Porto for demanding workers' rights to be respected in Portugal and for demanding greater transparency in the presidential elections. Catholic Action had become his nightmare.

Dear Veronica, if you could take a wider and more critical perspective of issues, your contribution will have a much wider appeal and impact too.

Navelim people ungrateful voters

Elections are held to give people an opportunity to choose representatives for their own benefit, but election for Navelim Constituency was an examination to prove what Luizinho had always emphasized on ‘Navelimcho lok mahan lok”, ‘Navelim-cho lok huxear lok”. Sorry to tell you Mr. Luizinho, elections for the year 2007 proved you wrong. People of Navelim are not intellects neither great, but they are ungrateful crocodiles and can go to any extent to gain money. For them money in God and so they serve any creature, and are even ready to announce a fool as king. The only thing that this fool needs is to possess money.

Well no MLAs neither any contesting candidates are saints, all have a grey side as part of their lives, and so we as people need to elect someone who has a vision for us, for our future and for our state — Goa. But did we really do so?

Kya kare Mamu?...... Navelim people saw the name “Save Goa”, and jumped to new heights....Aare yaar! Why you’ll failed to recall that the Supremo of the party is illiterate. Anyways, Churchill, let me help you to make some correction in your spelling. Yes, it’s not ‘Save Goa’, it is ‘Shave Goa’.

Since all you people of Navelim have enjoyed the hard works of Mr. Luizinho for too many years, now the time has come for you, to serve the dictator — ‘Lord of Money’ and ‘King of Brutality’, who shall reward you with crime and serve your children with alcohol, thus weakening the future pillars of Navelim. Yes, you all will be paid the fruit of your ungratefulness and foolish act — crime and no development.

The monster that was driven away by Benaulim people long back, for they knew his true self, is elected by you. Well, you have invited a big storm that will only bring devastation and destruction to your lives.

“Think before act” is a famous quote and yes, it is true. It is good to always think before we act. Great heroes have won and are still in the books of history — well this is not because of a foolish act but a bright cognitive process.

What was to be done is done and now it cannot change the situation even if we want to. Now all that we can do is pray to God for our safety. Being a true Goan, I shall pray for your safety and for the safety of your children and their future.

As I end, I praise the man with vision Mr. Luizinho Faleiro for developing his constituency and for creating a new Navelim — a place full of brightness and for making the constituency the most developed among all 40 constituencies in Goa. Well done and wish you all the best. May God bless you to keep up your good work.

SALAZAR

SALAZAR.

In his beautiful comment on my recent article "Memory of Yesteryear Tiatrists", Dr. Teotonio R. de Souza - http://by104fd.bay104.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?mailto=1&msg=56D86D42-252F-470C-82DA-7430ED41FB90&start=0&len=8117&src=&type=x&to=teodesouza@gmail.com&cc=&bcc=&subject=&body=&curmbox=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&a=c623804d5bb41e4822be483c731d58bfd0922a060b7db461f297dd396ac3637c, Lisboa, Portugal, a great scholar and a great intellectual made a following statement on which I would like to comment. Since, the comment is coming from such a top known intellectual person, I feel I should write further.

"Fado, Futebol e Fatima as the Salazar critics would say?"

Hence, it reminded me of Salazar whose real name is Dr. Antonio Oliveira Salazar and according to Dr. Teotonio R. De Souza who is a scholar in research work,

"Salazar was born on 28-4-1889 and died on 27-7-1970. He was born in an average rural family and only male child. He studied first (1900-1908) in the diocesan seminary of Viseu where he took minor orders. After leaving the seminary fought for restoration of the rights of the Church against the Repbulican persecution. Joined Coimbra University to study law (1910-1914). Taught at that Faculty from 1916 where he became well known for his expertise in economics and finance. Was militant of the Portuguese Catholic Centre, a Catholic party founded in 1916. It elected Salazar as its deputy for Parliament in 1921. The military rulers invited him to be Minister of Finance in 1928. Took charge of the Government in 1932, and enforced his own constitution for the country in 1933 instituting an authoritarian New State, which was brought down by the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974.

There is no unanimity about the benefits of this regime. No one questions the simplicity of his life, but also his passionate convictions on some issues. Defended rural life and its traditional values. Died without any significant personal bank accounts. The major accusations against him point to his inflexibility and incapacity to accompany the rapid changes in the world scenario. He seemed scared by any major change. They overtook him."

Salazar was a part of Goan history. Goa was grabbed by Bharat by using force when he was ruling Portugal. He never expected Nehru a follower of Non-Violence movement initiated by the father of the nation Gandhiji would use violence to annex Goa to Bharat. But unfortunately it happened and only by using violence and military force Nehru grabbed Goa for Bharat. Everybody said Salazar was a "fury" and would not listen to saner sense easily. If he had to listen and handed over real and genuine liberation to Goa under the administration of genuine and true sons of Goa, irrespective of their religious affiliation before 1961 December, would not Goa be a safer and lucrative place for the sons of the soil and for Goan posterity?

He was a dictator and dictators are always harsh. For asking freedom for their lands, freedom fighters from Angola and Mocambique during his regime were mercilessly punished. When these freedom fighters ran for their safety to the jungles, Salazar ordered to burn these jungles. When Bharat serkar under Nehru asked him to hand over my beloved Goa which is under seige now from all sides by our Montris and non - Goan influx, he forcefully said NO and converted Goa into a foreighn territory of Portugal. The status of Goa no noubt brought on par with motherland Portugal but were Goans treated in a real sense as Portuguese?

Inspite of his arrogance in rulership I still feel he had soft corner for many things as a person. Pe. Chico Monteiro from Candolim and the big man of Lar dos Estudantes, Panjim, in 1960 visited Portugal. During his short stay in Portugal, he showed his interest in meeting Salazar who till last moments before Pe. Chico Monteiro's leaving for Goa did not know that Pe. Chico is in Lisbon. Pe. Chico tried all the avenues to explore ways and means to get an audience with Salazar. During the last 15 minutes of his despare attempt, Salazar's Peon comes to know of Pe. Chico's wish and somehow or the other the Peon informs Salazar of a Goan Priest by name Pe. Chico Monteiro is in his Palace and desparately trying to get an audience with you but down the line administrators ignoring and neglecting Pe. Chico. Listening to his Peon, Salazar reacted fast and asked his Secretary to send for Pe. Chico Monteiro immediately. Then with a broad smile Salazar gave standing welcome to Pe. Chico, spoke to him for about 15 minutes. The topics that Salazar discussed with Pe. Chico were: Futebol in Goa, upliftment of poor Goans, unity of Hindu - Christian communities and well being of Pe. Chico himself. According to Pe. Chico Monteiro who disclosed this to me once, Salazar during those very memorable 15 minutes with him spoke like a fatherly figure with all his humility. And after saying "adeus" to Salazar, Pe. Chico Monteiro walked out from Salazar's Cabin all excited and in happy mood. While Pe. Chico was walking out a few seconds after he left Salazar's Cabin, Salazar came with swift steps following Pe. Chico Monteiro, discarding the protocol and even ignoring his own security calling loudly thus: "Sr. Padre, Sr. Padre, Teu Chapeu, Chapeu" holding Pe. Chico's Hat in his hand. Pe. Chico was totally astonished and was embarassed because he forgot his Hat on the table of Salazar while leaving Salazar's oggice. Pe. Chico had a habbit of always wearing a nice Hat in which his puny stature gave an extra majestic look of Pe. Chico.

The above incident indicates how humble a man Salazar was. He was not proud of his highest position. First he showed his simplicity by giving full freedom to his Peon to talk to him freely and secondly his deep simplicity and humility of condescending and coming himself with the Hat of Pe. chico and handing it over to him. Would our Indian and Goan Ministers would show such a humility and simplicity?

Salazar adored Fatima Saibinn. He was a true Catholic and a genuine Christian. He always revered religous leaders. When Pope Paul VI visited Fatima in Portugal, Salazar as a Premier of Portugal personally went to welcome the Pope there and how did he welcome His Holiness? Salazar welcomed the Pope by kneeling down on both his knees by kissing the hand of the Pope. This holy gesture of Salazar even surprised the Pope. It created history. When Kennedy a devout Catholic met Pope he did not emulate Salazar. Neither Pele when he met Pope during his Honeymoon visit to Italy.

When the same Pope in 1964 came to Bombay for Eucharistic Congress, He was welcomed by the entire Indian Cabinet headed by the President of India Dr. Radakrishnan and Premier Lal Bahadur Shastri. Indira Gandhi too was present to welcome the Pope, she was an Information and Broadcasting Minister of India.

Salazar loved Fado the Portuguese Folk song. We also love our folk song Manddo with dulpod. Our Goan Manddo and Portugal's Fado are both most attractive forms of songs. Both excite our respective cultural, traditional and historical attributes and both take us deep into our past and make us realise how great our folk songs are. Manddo culture, Manddo singing and also Manddo Festival in Kuwait was introduced by me and it was only me, Kuwait Konknni Kendr and my colleagues responsible for Manddo awakening in Kuwait. Thru this awakening we in Kuwait created a "Manddekar" in Rosary Ferns whose genius is such that he is now become one of the best Manddo composers in the world of Manddo.
