UNGRATEFUL BANGLADESH.

Bangladesh prior to its independence on 16th December 1971 was a part of Pakistan as it was then known as East Pakistan while the current Pakistan was known as West Pakistan but both the wings known as Pakistan under one sovereignty and one national flag. Though it was under one Pakistan yet East Pakistani people were not happy to remain under one Pakistan. Since independence from the British, East Pakistanis were clamouring for separate homeland for them, independent of West Pakistan. East Pakistanis always felt that under united Pakistan where West’s influence was more dominant, they were likely to lose their Bengali culture, tradition and everything related to Bengali including their mother tongue Bengali, the language of the great Indian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Hence they decided to secede from the West and establish their own independent country as Bangladesh.

To form their own independent nation, on 26th March 1971 under their patriotic leader Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, gave a call to all East Pakistani people to revolt against West Pakistan to create an independent sovereign nation known as Bangladesh. Within East Pakistan revolution took place and thousands of East Pakistani people to avoid atrocities committed on to them by the West Pakistani troops, fled to India. Indian States bordering East Pakistan flooded with refugees coming from East Pakistan. To support them physically India under Premier Indira Gandhi had to face lot of problems major being financial. To raise adequate finance for this cause India taxed its citizens by way of 25 Paise Stamp Tax for the every financial transaction carried on by the Indians in India. This was the big financial burden on Indians to support the cause of Bangladesh and its people.

Additionally when every opportunity failed to settle the dispute peacefully between East Pakistan and West Pakistan, India in support of East Pakistan’s claim for the total independence, waged a war against Pakistani Armed Forces based in East Pakistan and within a few days of most bloody war, liberated East Pakistan from the sovereignty of West Pakistan leading for an independent sovereign East Pakistan known as Bangladesh.

In this war for the liberation of Bangladesh India lost in millions financially plus thousands of its soldiers. It was a big sacrifice on the part of India for the sake of Bangladesh’s liberation. Additionally which is the worst result of this war, India created a Pakistani front for itself in Kashmir bordering West Pakistan. As a revenge for helping East Pakistani Bengalis for the creation of Bangladesh and splitting one united Pakistan into two parts, Pakistan is supporting secessionist movement in Indian Kashmir with arms and ammunitions and finance. This is the biggest set-back for India for its earlier support for the creation of Bangladesh.

Some political analysts said India in the first place should not have involved in the internal affairs of Pakistan in its dispute with East Pakistan. Because of this one wrong decision of Congress Party under Indira Gandhi’s leadership, India is now facing the onslaught of Pakistan in Indian Kashmir. Because of this one small spot the entire India is bleeding and suffering and it will go on bleeding thus forever. According to the events going on in Indian Kashmir now, with the clandestine support from Pakistan, Kashmiri people in Indian Kashmir will never stop fighting with Indian government until Indian Kashmir is reunited with the Pakistani Kashmir for the final establishment of one sovereign independent Kashmir. The way India helped East Pakistan to secede from West Pakistan earlier in the same way now Pakistan is helping Indian Kashmiris to secede from India for the creation of separate independent Kashmir. It is a ‘Tit – for – Tat’ war where India is totally at the mercy of Pakistani terrorism.

Now, coming back to Bangladesh, on 26th of this month it marked its National and Independence Day by remembering everyone who helped Bangladesh to free itself from Pakistan but never making any mention of India and its heroic role in liberating it from West Pakistan. If it was not for India, Bangladesh would never come into existence.

Are all the current leaders of Bangladesh including its Premier, President and Ambassador in Kuwait gone blind to what India done for its liberation? In the local Press in Kuwait their messages have been published but without mentioning India’s name. Is it a sign of INGRATITUDE? It looks like!! After all it was said by Shakespeare  "the good that man does often interred with the bones while evil always remains after him".

PARRIKAR IS A LIAR - MATANHY NOT.

Edit - Herald

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has triggered a hornet’s nest with his statement on the floor of the House that Matanhy Saldanha was convinced that Mopa airport was needed for the State. The chief minister, if he expects universal public acceptance for this statement, may be in for a disappointment.

Ironically, though, Parrikar's statement may well be happily welcomed by the Opposition as the Mopa airport plan was initiated by local Congressmen and there are vested interests who will always fall silent because an airport at Mopa would mean a huge increase in valuation of landholdings in the vicinity, even for those with mokaso land!

The truth is that Matanhy was dead against Mopa. He foresaw that Goa’s over-development would sound the death knell of Goan identity. He even termed the airport plan as a "land scam" wherein builders were eyeing the project to build structures for migrants.

A year has gone by without Matanhy. Among those for whom power is an end in itself, Matanhy well may have been condemned as a failed politician. Many wrote him off as a disgruntled element, with some even concluding that he feared success. But giving credence to such assessments and conjectures would be to ignore a very fundamental aspect of his life ~ he lived his political-activist life as an underdog fighting for the rights of others. Perhaps Matanhy was a so-called failed politician but a resounding success as a man of the masses, who was ahead of his times at that. Agree with him or disagree, it cannot be denied that his lifelong opposition to government policies he perceived as anti-people and his passion for Goa were his calling cards. He dreamed of a better, more equitable Goa and was extremely vocal about what he strongly felt ~ Goa, Goa and more Goa.

As early as 2008, he lamented the indiscriminate hill cutting and vociferously opposed the manner in which hillocks were being flattened in Mandrem, Chopdem and Korgao that adversely affected the forest cover. Matanhy is on record as stating that "Goa is already saturated". The following extract from his 2008 Press note is a telling blow to those who presume that the people will believe what is being said about him today:

“With further profit-ridden development, by builders, real estate agents, and some unscrupulous elected representatives, Goa soon will make Goans not only a minority, but strangers in their own land. Do we want this? Goans and all who love Goa, irrespective of religion, caste, region or political affiliations, UNITE to stop Goa from being eliminated.”

More tellingly, on Mopa, he said in an interview published in November 2002: "I am totally against another airport in Goa. Goa is too small for another airport. They (politicians) don’t know the implications...

The whole idea of the airport arose because Disneyland wanted to come to Goa. So they wanted to do it on a Build Operate Transfer basis… Why didn’t they exchange Dabolim airport for Anjidiva when the island was handed over to the Indian Navy? There was nothing anti-national about it. In Hyderabad, the chief minister compelled the Indian Air Force to leave. He said, he wants to make Hyderabad an international airport. So, what national security are we talking about?”

Apparently, the ruling dispensation has gone back on the solemn commitment made at the funeral of Matanhy, promising to keep his legacy alive. Would he, if he had been among us today, accepted and/or signed up to the Chief Minister's statement? Your guess is as good as ours.

IN REPLY TO JULIO CARDOSO'S ARTICLE.

To

Kranti Editor.

Sir

Please publish this article in your blog. I am a regular reader of your blog. Keep up the good work.

This is in response to Julio Cardozo's post about refereeing. I have a few points to make in this regard. Julio writes that referees are humans and that they are prone to make mistakes. I completely agree on this aspect. But the fact of the matter is that Julio should also understand that when we are talking about big league games there is a lot at stake. There is no drawing parallel between Soor soccer and professional league at the highest level. Please keep in mind that my article is only focusing on major soccer leagues.

For example, assuming Chelsea and Manchester City play one another the pressure on players is so enormous that sometimes it gets the better of them. Referees sometimes commit howlers as the whole world witnessed in the Champions League between Manchester United V/s Real Madrid.

Turkish referee committed a blunder that changed the whole complexion of the game. You may remember that Manchester United were in driving seat and in full flight until Nani was red carded for a high challenge. That foul deserved yellow at best. In a situation like this, what you expect the players to do? Kick the ground?

In the subsequent melee, the referee was surrounded by referee and the players began arguing and that is fine. The referee should also realize that he made mistake and the referee no doubt has a reverse gears on decisions but at least he is cautious knowing the fact that he is under the scanner. Imagine if the referee is not questioned he is under the impression that everything is cruising well, so it is important that the player hold up the mirror to him. In short, it keeps him on his toes.

For example, in premier league, a player can lose his berth temporarily for committing a mistake. Drawing parallel between soccer and other games, Julio should remember that soccer is played at ferocious tempo, end-to-end action, as opposed to slower pace of the other games.

When you play at high tempo, the adrenalin is pumping and the stress begins pick up steam. It has been scientifically proven that professional soccer players are more aggressive because the way the game is being played. Moreover, professional teams are under great pressure to deliver from their sponsors and as a result the pressure gets to the players.

Manchester City were at the receiving end last week as the referee failed to point to the dreaded spot after Everton player handled the ball. This again was a game changer. Manchester City players circled the referee and quite rightly so. Here they were being robbed of a goal and if emotions don’t run high---what will?

Subsequently, Everton’s tail was up after that and they fired on all cylinders and went on to win the match. On many occasions, referees have ruined matches due to bad decisions. So what does Julio has to say about situations like these? The referee always goes scot free but the players come under fire. Referees also never apologize for their mistakes. So as you can see referees always get away with their sloppiness and incompetence. In order to avoid this, we need to bring in technology into play. Just like the third umpire in cricket. Believe me it will change the landscape of football in a positive manner. Hope better sense prevails.

Seby Mascarenhas.

DEATH OF TIATRIST PATRICK FERNANDES.

It is with deep regret and sorrow that I write these few lines on the sudden and untimely death of Tiatrist Patrick Fernandes, on 19th of this month in UK where he was working. Earlier he was working in Kuwait.

He was a well-known actor and singer. After the liberation of Kuwait I met him in Kuwait while he was acting in the Tiatro of the late Rosary Ferns where he did a major role with superb display of his acting caliber. As a man he was very humble and shy but on Stage he was totally different devoted totally to his roles. He was excellent on the Stage in serious roles and very good in rendering serious and sorrowful “Cantos”.

He had great love for Konkani Stage and when I requested him, like his elder brother Frncis de Verna, he never acted for fees. He participated in our Shows organized in Kuwait by Kuwait Konknni Kendr without charging anything. He along with his brother Francis de Verna and F.X. Pereira formed a nice Trio to perform in Konkani Shows and their Trios were very good and meaningful in favour of Goa and Konkani. He had very good voice to sing solos and other type of songs.

In his death Konkani Stage lost a great Stage Artiste and I lost a great supporter of my activities in support of Goa, Konkani and Kuwait Goan community.

May His Soul Rest in Peace and May Heavenly God give courage to all his family members to bear this loss.

ARE SOCCER LAWS TOO VAGUE?

By Julio Cardoso - Kuwait.

ARE SOCCER LAWS TOO VAGUE?
OR IS IT JUST OUR NATURE TO DISPUTE EVERYTHING?

Something that has been bothering me for the past few days has been the deteriorating behavior of players on the soccer field the world over, and regretfully the disease has caught on in our very own tournaments organized for Indian Community in Kuwait.

I know we see it on TV all the time, even in international matches, players arguing with referees, but the fact remains that arguing with a referee is just pointless. A referee is rarely ever going to change his decision, but for sure he will be annoyed and it may even influence him taking future decisions in the game which may go against the player who was constantly arguing, or it may even hurt his own team.

Soccer referees are human, and for sure they are going to make mistakes every now and then and sometimes the mistakes are so obvious, you want to literally murder the referee, and this is exactly when the character of a player will be visible. Does he know to ignore the mistake and rather concentrate on his game and help his team win? Or is he going to argue with the Referee and get into his bad books? Team managers and so called experts of the game are no better and do their best standing outside the field of play, instigating the players with provocative remarks against the referee and his assistants.

Two of the main reasons I feel that players argue with the referee are (a) because of their ignorance of the laws of the game and (b) the vagueness of some of the laws of the game where the laws are not specific and ‘In the opinion of the referee’ is not fully understood by the, players, spectators and at times even the referees themselves.

One law that is still not clear in soccer until today is ‘handling the ball’. Law # 12 (fouls and misconducts) which clearly states that when a player handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area), the referee will award a direct free kick to the opponents. The word ‘deliberately’ is something that FIFA must review, as very rarely does a player deliberately handle the ball especially in his own penalty area and in most cases handling the ball is accidental. However the referee has no hesitation in pulling up a player for handball even if it is not deliberate. So many other rules are vague including the offside rule, playing an advantage, attempting to kick/trip, accidental fouls, abusing own players, referees mistakes in ending matches before or after the actual duration of play, etc etc.

This is however not the same in other sports like cricket, baseball, badminton, where the laws are very clear and you will rarely find players arguing the umpire’s decision. It has also got to do with ethics of the game, where arguing with the umpire is considered disrespectful and prone to strong action by the laws or the Federation.

Couple of weeks back, in a SEMI-FINAL match between Kerala Challengers and AVC Sports & Cultural Association in the GOA Rolling Trophy, the referee accidentally ended the game 5 minutes before time, and even as Kerala Challengers who incidentally were leading 1-0 when the match ended had already left the field of play, the error was immediately pointed out to the referee who requested Kerala Challengers to return to the field and play out the remaining five minutes.

Now Kerala Challengers had every right to dispute the referee’s request and initially refused to return to the field as the referee had ended the match, however better sense prevailed and after much coaxing and cajoling they did return and completed the remainder of the match. But just imagine if they had refused to comply with his request or if AVC had to equalize during the five minutes that were played out, it would have been utter chaos.

In such a situation I believe there is no written law that is covered in the laws of the game, although the Referees’ hand-book states that the match may have to be replayed entirely or just the remaining five minutes on another day if the error was not detected immediately. Including such probabilities in tournament rules or Federation by-laws may be a good idea in future.

Players who constantly argue with the referee test their own character when they assume they know the laws and dispute every decision taken by the referee. This also incites other players who join in the arguments with the referee and the game than disintegrates resulting in referees erring due to unnecessary pressure.

While organized soccer for the Indian community has been in existence for over 35 years in Kuwait and I have been a part of it as a player, administrator and a referee, I regret to say that not much has improved. Playing the game in the spirit of the game really does not exist and winning is all that matters. If a team loses, the propaganda is that they lost because of the referee. Abusing referees and even attacking them has happened in the recent past and the good thing is that Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) has been firm with punishment for such players.

It is also good to see that Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA) and KIFF are now working hand in hand and my humble request to the current KIFF President who is doing an excellent job, is to get club owners, team managers and players to attend refresher classes at least once in three months, to enlighten them on the laws of the game and clear doubts on some laws of the game that are vague.

HUMILITY OF POPE & OF EX BISHOP OF KUWAIT

The new Pope Francis I, will be identified not by his physical majesticity but by his practical humility associated with the sense of forgiveness and sympathy for the poor. If all the earlier Popes had these qualities the Catholic World would attain lot of good which could have been easily shared with others too to make this whole world a blissful place to live.

If during his time Gallileo was blessed with the sensisble and knowledgeable Pope, Gallileo would have been spared of the punishment the then ignorant Pope meted out to him for speaking the truth saying,  "it is earth that moves round the sun and not the other way round". Even if Gallileo was wrong the present Pope true to his genuine sense of forgiveness would have forgiven Gallileo and spared him from the harsh punishment the then Pope wrongly meted out to Gallileo.

If the present Pope Francis I, had to rule Vatican when Martin Luther issued his protest against Pope’s actions, the present Pope Francis I, true to his nature would have forgiven Martin Luther and allowed him to reconcile with the Vatican instead of provoking Martin Luther to flee from Rome for safety of his life. If the reconciliation with Martin Luther was effected with humility by the then Pope, today Catholicism would have been stronger sparing from having one more Lutheran denomination. The then Pope lacked humility as the current Pope and hence the split in the Catholicism.

Humility in words and in deeds is performed by very few Catholic leaders. The ex Bishop of Kuwait, Mnsg. Frances Mechallef, a Maltese citizen was one of them. He and me we had sometime difference of opinions and at moments he did not agree with my views but that should not deter me from accepting the fact that he was a very humble Bishop and a true sympathiser of the poor. He was the only Bishop that I saw who stooped so low to lead a very humble way of life. Feudality and pompousness normally associated with the Bishops and in many arrogant priests was not existing in Bishop Frances Mechallef. One could many times see him in the Church compound with Broom and Basket in his hands cleaning the Church Compound along with other hired Cleaners and sometimme even cleaning public Toilets in the Church Compound. He was a true missionary having no dislike for doing ordinary manual jobs normally meant for the lowest persons.

As a lover of poor Bishop Frances Mechallef never liked to tax the poor especially the Catholics residing in Kuwait from Indian subcontinent. Neither had he liked priests coming from the mentioned region to collect funds in Kuwait from the poor faithful. His contention was that the expatriates from subcontinent are not as rich as they are depicted and that they are undergoing lot of sacrifices to fulfil their own obligations. And since this is the case these expatriates according to Bishop mechallef should not be taxed.

Bishop Frances Mechallef was such a genius economist that without asking any donation from the faithful openly, he raised thru his own sources such a huge amount of money to renovate the Cathedral and to build such a magnificent edifice in the Church compound. This renovated Cathedral in Kuwait city and the beautiful edifice he constructed in the Church Compound should remain as monument of his in Kuwait.

“HABEMUS PAPAM “ - WE HAVE A POPE.

Wellcome Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergolio of the land of Maradona as the new Pope for the lands of Catholics comprising over a billion members. It was a joyful moment to hear the eagerly awaited announcement beamed thru TV Channels all around the globe the selection of the new Pope who named himself as Francis I – after St. Francis de Assisi and St. Francis Xavier the Spanish Missionary who also belonged to the society of Jesuits and who came to Goa centuries back to spread Christianity; He is reveredly called the Patron Saint of Goa.

As a catholic I feel proud that my leader the Pope stationed at Vatican is commanding such a vast influence in the world which cannot be compared to anybody else either political or religious figures on this planet. I can rightly say judging from the interest shown to his election by the world that the Pope is the most powerful and the most influential individual in the world. For 2 days the entire world was glued to the TV some like me not even sleeping for two nights to witness the announcement of His selection on 13th of this month.

At 66 Pope Francis looks young and youthful with charismatic appearance that will help him to deal with others positively. In his smile there is lot of attraction that also will help him to build his image as a great Pontiff.

It is a big blessing for us Catholics to have such a simple man as a Pope. His urge to identify himself with the common people and with common acts should be a lesson to imitate for those priests and Bishops who are leading the life of feudal lords thereby degrading the greatness of Christ’s humility. His traveling in the public Buses and living in simple apartment should put into shame all those priests and Bishops who use limousines for their transport and Bungalow type of residential places to live the life of Monarchs against the principles of Christ who lived a simple life. His economic way of living is totally against that of those priests and Bishops who live the life of Maharajas by spending money from the contributions of the faithful who foolishly think that the contribution they give to the Churches go to God. In fact the enormous amount of the contribution faithful give to the Churches including Sunday and other holiday collections many times goes for the luxuries of the priests and Bishops and also to support their concubines. In Pope Francis dwells simplicity and poverty while in many of our priests and Bishops dwell satanic arrogance, satanic pride, satanic wealth and satanic pompous show.

His abhorrence for sex for priests and bishops should correct the sexual inclinations of our priests and bishops that brought the Church reputation into disgrace. In fact the Church reputation was disgraced by the disgraceful priests and disgraceful Bishops some of them still believe in Racism, Facism and Nazism for this reason this time God guided the Cardinals to elect the Pope from the poor country Argentina which had no traces of Racism, Fascism and Nazism.

His selection as Pope will be marked as the beginning of rebuilding of the Church just as that of the advent of St. Francis de Assisi. Currently our Catholic Church is tottering into the hands of weak priests and weak Bishops because of whom very many Catholics are leaving Catholicism and embracing other non-Catholic denominations. In Non-Catholic denominations they get better solace spiritually and physically because the Pastors in these denominations are good guides, full of wisdom, full of knowledge and full of God’s blessings. These Pastors display thru the intercession of Holy Spirit better power to heal the sick spiritually and physically. The main attraction of these Pastors is their simplicity in words and in deeds in dealing with the faithful following the example of Christ.

What I did not like in this Pope Francis is His silence on the brutalities of militarily dictatorial government functioning in Argentina from mid-seventies to mid-eighties. That government during that cruel period committed all sorts of cruelties on humanity in Argentina against the Christian doctrine and for the leader of the Catholics in Argentina to remain silent on these happenings is like accepting satanic rule. I am surprised how this mighty and majestic man whom we call as Pope became a coward in front of the military ruler of Argentina whose ruthless regime spilled blood of innocent citizens all over Argentina against the teachings of Jesus Christ.

It was not the present Pope alone who became a coward in front of his country’s ruler but there were some other Christian leaders too who also became cowards in front of their countries rulers in the sense that when their political leaders asked them to bow their heads they went one step further and prostrated like slaves thereby failing to support the truth and uprightness in a true Christian manner following the example of Christ of refusing to bow down before the brute might of the political ruler.

During the Second World War which was imposed by the Nazis to demolish the human civilization thru cruel deeds, the Bishop of England rightly condemned Hitler’s Nazism thus upholding the Christian principle while German Bishop instead eulogized Hitler’s action thereby trampling under his satanic feet Christian doctrine of peace and love.

During the invasion period of Kuwait by Iraq, in the middle of September 1990 to please his political boss Saddam Hussein, the Chaldean Bishop of Iraq came on to the national TV of Iraq and eulogized Saddam Hussein. Instead of condemning and disapproving of Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait which was wrong, the Chaldean Bishop against the principle of Christianity to stand by the right sanctified the wrong.

On the day of the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq on 2nd August 1990 early in the morning when I noticed the lustful urge of raping in Kuwait city by the filthy Iraqi soldiers and remembering the raping incidents of Goan females by the dirty and ugly Indian soldiers in December 1961 at the time of invasion of Goa by the Bharat, I went around in my neighbourhood with one mission. And what was that mission? It was to tell the Goan females staying around my residence to flee from Kuwait city because Iraqi soldiers true to their nature will start raping. While I entered in one Goan Flat to inform this news suddenly an armed Iraqi solider followed me and pulled out all the males from that Flat. Sensing the worst I refused but surrendered like a goat when threatened to kill me by that Iraqi soldier. It was very close to the Church. Immediately I came home and called one priest in the Church requesting him to do something either to call our Pro-Nuncio at Baghdad to use His influence with Saddam Hussein to stop Iraqi soldiers from raping in Kuwait or to come out of the Church and as a daring priest go to that Flat where Iraqi solder may be trying his best preying on the Goan females residing there and to save them. But to my utter disgust that priest from the Catholic Church in Kuwait city became coward and instead instructed me to pray for the safety of the females under the claws of Iraqi soldier.

Priesthood, Bishophood and Cardinalship is a daring job meant for daring persons only who should be ready even to risk their lives to fight for justice in the name of Christ. Will the newly elected Pope Francis inculcate this sense into his subordinates before inculcating it into himself first?

G.O.A ROLLING TROPHY FINAL - KUWAIT.

KERALA SNATCH GOA ROLLING TROPHY

Real Betalbatim go down fighting

In a pulsating final featuring end to end action, Kerala Challengers came back from a goal down to level with Real Betalbatim 1-1 and than snatch the prestigious GOA Rolling Trophy in the tie-breaker after extra time yielded no result in the finals of the 19th edition of the G.O.A Rolling Trophy organized by Goan Overseas Association (Goa Maroons) and played at the MOH Grounds in Shuwaikh on 8th March 2013 under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation.

Real Betalbatim playing their first final in a KIFF affiliated tournament matched Kerala Challengers in all respects in the first half and both goalkeepers on either side had to make important saves to keep the score goalless at interval. Denzil Jadhav, Real Betalbatim’s brilliant mid-fielder than conjured a goal out of nothing when he slotted home from an acute angle in a goalmouth melee to give his team the lead in the 10th minute of the second half much to the delight of the Betalbatim supporters. However as the match progressed, Kerala Challengers made their presence felt and a tiring Real Betalbatim defence led by the veteran Theodore Pinto were finally broken when Jineesh headed from a Rafeeq cross to equalize 1-1 with just 10 minutes to go. In the tie-breaker lottery, Kerala Challengers kept their cool scoring from all their kicks while Real Betalbatim missed one to break the hearts of their supporters. The match was ably handled by IFRA referee Francis Fernandes and he was assisted by Liston and Alvaro on the lines.

During the prize distribution ceremony which was graced by Charles D’Sa of Bassem International Company as chief guest, KIFF President and guest of honour Fidelis Fernandes appreciated the efforts of Goan Overseas Association and lauded them for organizing a successful tournament. Leo Fernandes gave away the gifts to referees while the fair play award was won by Kerala Challengers and given away by Rev. Fr. Rosario Oliveria the special invitee who is from the Bishop’s Palace in Goa and on a visit to Kuwait. In his brief address, Fr. Oliveria complimented the Indian Community in Kuwait for organizing tournaments of such calibre and was especially impressed with the fine sporting spirit and discipline shown by both finalists.

An appreciation service award was given to Clifford Fortes for his contribution to Goan Overseas Association since 1994 by Jaime Figueira on behalf of the Association, while Roland D’Sa and Ian D’souza gave away the runners up trophies to players and captain of Real Betalbatim. Mrs. Zinia Cardoso was on hand to give away the Man of the Match trophy which was deservedly won by Jeneesh V. of Kerala Challengers while the V. President of Goa Maroons, Tony Correia gave away the prestigious GOA Rolling Trophy to the captain of Kerala Challengers.

Earlier in the day, a festival tie-breaker tournament, the first of its kind was held for KIFF registered club officials and it was won by KIFF Managing Committee who defeated Indian Strikers in the final. Also an unique festival exhibition 9 a- side match between ‘The North’ captained by Carmo Santos and ‘The South’ captained by Salvador Dias was held just before the final and it was won by The North 4-0.

Earlier in the day before the final, a festival tie-breaker tournament first time in the history of Indian soccer in Kuwait was held for KIFF registered club officials. This tournament was organised by Kuwait Indian Football Federation and was won by KIFF Managing Commitee Members by defeating Indian Strikers in the final. KIFF President Fidelis Fernandes gave away the winners and runners up trophies.

ARPORA - THE FIRST ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL OF GOA. PART: II.

GERMAN FOOTBALL TEAM.

Football was the most popular sport at Arpora School and some of the renowned footballers of Goa during those days were the products of St. Joseph’s High School – Arpora, many of them are still surviving attaining old age. During those days education was not given that topmost priority as it is now especially after 1961 when enrolling a child into school started when the child is barely 3 years while earlier it was six to 8 and even 10. Hence students of Arpora and elsewhere were much older during their scholastic career there. Being older in age they were very smart in soccer capable of competing with any top Goan team. Hence their encounter with visiting German team immediately following the end of World War II.

Portugal was neutral in the Second World War and hence Hitler did not attack Goa but one of his Warships entered Western Coast of India bordering Maharastra because India was British colony and Britain was opposing Germany in the war. Hence one German Warship exactly at the end of this war reached the mentioned Indian coastal zone and the British Fighter Jets bombed this German Warship damaging it tremendously. While in a damaged state this Warship came limping to Goa Coast crossing Sinquerim and reaching Anjuna – Vagator where all the surviving German Navy men came to the shore by swimming and using life jackets. At Anjuna beach they were spotted by the locals who purely in a Goan tradition of hospitality helped them with clothes, food and shelter. They became very friendly to the locals by interacting with them very closely and a few of them permanently settled down in Goa only, one even got married with a Goan girls.

Some of the Navy men from this Warship were very good footballers, a few of them were the members of the then mighty German National Team while others were first divisioners in Germany. At Anjuna Tembi Ground when local boys were playing soccer these German Navy men also joined them and due to their extremely high class of soccer instantly they became famous all over surrounding areas. So much so when they played against the Anjuna local boys a friendly game even Portuguese soldiers stationed at Aguada flocked to see them along with locals from all the surrounding areas.

Immediately this news reached to Fr. Mendonca the sports lover Principal of Arpora School and he personally contacted them and arranged a friendly soccer match with his school team played at Arpora school ground in front of thousands of spectators coming from all around the surrounding areas. My soccer crazy father was one of the spectators who told me once how the spectators were vociferously cheering Arpora saying “LYONS – LYONS”.

The photograph of this German team was preserved and kept in the school Notice Board till I finished my SSC there but later on I have no idea what has happened to this Notice Board and the photos dsiplayed there

Somewhere in 1977 there was a movie made of this Warship and how it was bombed by the British Airforce. The name of the movie was “Sea Wolves” and actor Gregory Peck played the main role in this movie. When he came for the shooting of this film at Sinquerim, he stayed at Sinquerim Taj and when he saw around Taj area he exclaimed thus “what a beautiful place it is. It is like a Heaven”.

One of the surviving Navy men from this Warship stayed in Candolim and got married to a Goan girl from Sinquerim while another one settled in Vasco and the rest returned to Germany with gratitude to Goa, Goans and Anjunkars.

CONCLUDED.

ARPORA - THE FIRST ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL OF GOA. PART: I.

There is a saying in Konkani “Baint Poddlem Khuim Koblem ani Voir Sorlem Khuim Soblem”. This is what has happened when I wrote two articles on the late Santana Carvalho following his death on 18th of January this year; one article on 20th of January 2013 and the other on the day of his Month’s Mind.  Both these articles especially the second one on 18th of February 2013  awakened the conscience of some Goans to know the history of Goa and especially of English education in Goa in general and Arpora School in particular.  Many Goans especially the young intellectuals have asked me about Arpora School and the visiting German soccer team that I indicated in my second article.  For their benefit and for the benefit of others who are interested in Goa’s past I give them some information that I know on both these topics.  First topic is the establishment of St. Joseph’s High School Arpora and the second topic the friendly soccer match played between Arpora School team and the visiting German team.

One view of the school

It was said during those early days that among Goans, Bardezkars are more civilised, more decent, more cultured, more knowledgeable and more educated. This development according to some elders, Bardezkars achieved because of the educational facilities especially of English education they got in their area due to the establishment of the first two English Schools of Goa there; one was the Sacred Heart of Jesus – Parra which was the first English school of Goa while St. Joseph’s High School – Arpora was the first English High School of Goa which was founded and started by one non-Goan Deacon named Fr. Lyon. He was not a full-fledged priest but as a Deacon he was wearing priestly Cassock since he loved priesthood but unfortunately due the affliction of incurable contagious skin desease he was thrown out of the Seminary where he was doing his priestly studies. Thus he remained as Deacon only.

Statue of School Patron Saint - St. Joseph

In search of right medicine to cure his skin desease he travelled many parts of India till somebody told him in Madras to visit a holy place called Goa where you will find blessed Springs flowing with blessed water and this water has curative effects which surely will cure your skin desease however deadly and incurable it may be. When he reached Goa after moving from one place to another in search of the right spot, somebody told him to go to Sinquerim Bardez where there is a Spring and if you have bath from the water of that Spring you are bound to be ok.

With high hope Fr. Lyon came to Sinquerim, spotted the right Spring, had bath there and soon was cured of his otherwise incurable skin desease. With this miracle he praised the God and said Eureka – Eureka and moved on to Candolim and from Candolim he moved on to Calangute trying to locate a suitable place to do something good for Goa that gave him cure for his incurable skin desease. He had education in his mind and as a mark of gratitude for Goa he decided to establish an English high school. Failing to find a suitable spot at Calangute he shifted to calm and cool place at Arpora where he established the first English High School of Goa where facilities were provided not only for day scholars but also for boarders to study and excel in sports.

Since this was the first English High School of Goa preparing the Goan students for the Matriculation, all the top ranking and smart students of Goa became the students of this school. Not only in studies but also in sports all the top sportsmen of Goa during those days were the students of this school. In one of his historically beautiful songs, the great Alfred Rose sings praises for this school and to its founder Fr. Lyon.  This song though not recorded but he kept it written in his Cantarancho Jhelo No.1.

Another view of the School.  Top floor was the boarding

Fr. Phillip Neri Mendonca from Aldona was the Third Principal of this school who developed this school tremendously. For about 35 years he ruled this school as its renowned Principal and very strict disciplinarian who for any misdeed by the student will cane that student like “Zotkar” caning the “Zotacho Reddo”. It was said during those days that if you want to discipline your rowdy son then enrol him at Arpora school under Fr. Mendonca who by using harsh corporal punishment sometime in inhuman manner would correct the rowdy students. All those students who faced his inhuman punishment were the victims of that harsh era that believed only in ruthless corporal punishment to correct the erring students. I was also a victim of his caning on my palms not for rowdism, not for any mischief but for not doing my Confession for receiving Holy Communion on one First Friday. It was compulsory for us Catholic students to attend the Mass in School Chapel on every First Friday and receive Holy Communion. Not performing religious duties was one of the worst crimes a student can commit at Arpora School.

Justifying his harsh method of using stick to discipline indisciplined students he once cited Biblical version where it said to use stick. The book of Proverbs authored by King Solomon is a part of Bible which allows the parents to use stick to correct their naughty children but not to punish the erring children with revenge as Fr. Mendonca was doing and as a sadist he used to take pleasure in seeing the students in agony while receiving his ruthless beatings. He was smart in everything except knowing that mischief and youth go together.

Primary Section seen in above picture

As a mark of respect for Fr. Lyon's great gift for Goa in the field of English education, after his death a Bust has been erected at the entrance of this school facing the school playground.

Seen above is the Bust of Fr. Lyon

During those days till his death in 1965 Fr. Mendonca was a name and fame in Goa in educational and sports fields. He was the first Goan after India annexed Goa to receive the National Award from Indian government as the best educationist of Goa from the hands of Indian President Dr. Radakrishnan who was so impressed of his knowledge that Dr. Radakrishnan invited him again to Delhi to ask his advice on certain matters related to Goa and Portugal relationship.

Fr. Mendonca was renowned for organising school sports day function with much pomp and extravaganza. People used to come to watch this annual event from all over Goa and main attraction of this event was the “Drill” and Tableaux conducted by the students under his supervision where he used to show even the election of the Pope and other world renowned events happened during that year. Once in 1959 he showed the hijacking of Portuguese Ship Santa Maria off the coast of Azores by the Portuguese terrorist Galvao Pinto. The Drills and Tableaux was like opening ceremony of the Olympic Games and in fact some people used to dub Arpora Sports day festival as Goan Olympics. Such attractive events are not taking place anywhere in Goa now, they are interred with the bones of Fr. Mendonca at the Cemetry of Nagoa Bardez where he was buried with the attendance of such a massive crowd that never in the past such a multitude attended any funeral of any person in Goa.

TO BE CONCLUDED.

THE LATE HUGO CHAVEZ OF VENEZUELA.

A great socialist leader and the dynamic president of Venezuela, El Comandante Hugo Chavez has expired on 6th of this month after suffering from Cancer for 2 years. After exhausting all the possible medical treatments to cure his deadly cancer, he as a devout Christian surrendered to the will of God though unwillingly since he wanted to live more to complete the unfinished task of his country. In his premature death at the age of 58 the poor in Venezuela lost their great supporter who worked hard to alleviate their sufferings in their country. He utilised the enormous amount of Oil wealth of his country very sincerely for the upliftment of his poor people and in their development. Even though he used the vast Oil wealth to eradicate poverty in his land yet much of the job to completely eradicate poverty in his land remained unfinished.

The poor in his country will miss him too much because he was also a fatherly figure for them. There are very few leaders in this world like him who worked so sincerely and dedicatedly for the poor. If it is in India the political leaders of India will loot the entire Oil wealth for them and for their families instead of helping the poor to eradicate their poverty. This is the quality of rogue Indian leaders and precisely because of this Indian poor are still remaining poor even after 7 decades of India’s independence. The plight of poverty striken Indians would have been better improved if colonialists had to rule India not for 7 more decades but only 7 more YEARS.  That was the administrative competence of colonialists for this reason many senior citizens of India crave for their administration.

It is a big tragedy that Hugo Chavez died at so early age before completing his task for the poor not only in his own country but also in neighbouring countries where the poor there benefitted from his largesse; they will also miss him too much. He was not my hero but I liked him because of his sincerity in working for the upliftment of his poor people because as a young child and a young boy he himself was the victim of poverty having no proper house to live and no proper food to eat. Because he suffered poverty he wanted to eradicate poverty from the midst of others since he knew the curse of poverty.

It is given to understand that his arch rival and opponent USA was responsible for infesting him with Cancer germs by putting Canerous Cells in his food thru the US sources. Though this sounds very difficult yet it is not impossible because with USA anything and everything is possible. And to liquidate their opponents Americans will do anything if they really go for it.

In late fifties and early sixties Cuba’s leader Fidel Castro was a big threat to USA and because of this threat Americans wanted to liquidate Castro not directly but thru soft method. Then they realised it is not necessary to liquidate him but eradicate his attractiveness. Thru the study done by CIA on Castro it was found out that Castro’s charisma lies on his long beard where his personality centred and this personality gives him success when he deals with world inside and outside Cuba. Then the question came how to trim or completely shave his charismatic beard and who will do this job? Then the CIA funded Drug manufacturing company manufactured one especial type of Powder which had to be splashed inside the shoes of Castro and once this was done this Powder will create reaction in Castro’s body in such a way that this reaction will create effect on Castro’s face leading him to lose the hair of his beard gradually. This method was a Eureka for CIA but impossible to implement for USA. Hence it was discarded and because it was discarded then, the ageing Fidel Castro is still surviving well.

Because of his tirade against USA and its earlier president Bush Jr,, Hugo Chavez in one of his televised addresses openly called Bush Jr. in Spanish as ‘Burro’ and immediately then switched into English saying “Donkey”. This was the fury of Hugo Chavez against the USA. But where this fury and anger gone now? In his death it all disappeared like Ether.
