DRAMA IN KUWAIT: APLEA BHURGEAM SANGATAK

Had the opportunity of watching the much touted 'Aplea Bhurgeam Sangatak' a Konkani drama staged by Dy S.P. Sammy Tavares at the American International School, Hawally on Friday 28th September 2012 and I must say it was not such a happy experience.

Let me start with the play itself. Although I found the story similar to so many other Tiatrs I have watched over the years, it could still could pass off as 'satisfactory' especially given that it contained some powerful acting by Felcy as the tormented mother, Mathew, Roma, Rosaila and a couple of others whose names I do not know. Regretfully, I cannot say the same about the comedy and I personally did not find it too funny, in spite of the best efforts of comedian John D'Silva. Strangely though, quite a few in the audience enjoyed it. The songs baring one or two including one beautiful duet by the female leads, were dull and boring and I could see the audience getting restless and waiting for the next one. For once my favourite Cajetan/Marcus/Xavier disappointed big time and left many in the audience feeling the same as me , especially since the drama was attended by a huge crowd, probably close to 600 plus.

However, my main reason for writing this blog is not really about the drama, it more to do with the organizers and the organizing of the drama.

Isn't it time the organizers stopped checking our patience and started taking us a little more seriously? The start of the drama was announced as 5:00pm and in spite of us being in the hall at 4:50pm, the show started approximately at 6:45pm (about 1 hour 45 minutes late), and to top it all, till the curtains opened we were bombarded with announcement after announcement about the availability of so called 'Original CDs' and VCDs. There was also an announcement that video shooting is prohibited while the organizers had 3 cameras in strategic locations to actually video film the whole play. Also every now and then someone would announce that the play is about to start and the lights would be switched off only for them to come on again...

My next issue is the interval break. Without scant concern for the audience who were in the hall, some of them from 4:00pm, the break lasted for over an hour with further announcements about VCDs and CDs, Bingo game, auction of souvenirs and felicitation ceremonies. The show actually ended at 11:25pm, so you do the math.

Another strange thing I found in recent Konkani Dramas is that Organizers and Tiatrists find it the best place to wash 'Dirty Linen'. So you will find a singer (in this case a couple) who will come on stage and sing a 'Zopati' (hope I got that right) without giving names, but rather a few broad hints. Now tell me, if I am not aware of your drama politics, how the hell would I know who you are singing about or seriously do I really care?

I believe it's time our Konkani drama organizers and actors stop hiding behind the curtain of their love for the Konkani language and the stage, and give us our money's worth. Most of them (actually all, and I know quite a few) are very sensitive to criticism and will rarely accept it positively to improve themselves and their art. It's time organizers not only think of making a tidy profit, but giving the audience value for their money as well.

A friend of mine summed up last evening's drama very well. He said: I have seen a lot of dramas by far the worst, serious thought needs to go in by the organizers.

Gentlemen, Please!!! If I have paid KD.5/- (approximately Rs.1000/-) for a ticket, damn it!!!! I want full value for my money. Just like watching a move, not all dramas may be good, but if not anything else, at least I should enjoy the experience of a pleasant evening out.

Your last article on the eve of this drama in Kranti was a great boost for the last minute sale of the tickets. As per my information at least 200 people came to watch this drama only after reading that article.  You got any commission for this job Veronica?

TIATRO REVIEW "APLEA BHURGEAM SANGATAK"

Attended by the capacity crowd from Goa, Mangalore, Karwar and Bombay all residing in Kuwait, Xavier & Manuel Productions has successfully organised the Tiatro “Aplea Bhurgeam Sangatak”, written and directed by Dy. S.P. Sammy Tavares, on Friday 28th September at the American International School Hall, Maidan Hawally, Kuwait. Instead of starting at scheduled time 5.00 P.M., the Tiatro started almost an hour and half late; hence it ended also late night thereby creating lot of inconveniences for lot of people among the audience to go home at the late hour. Unnecessary waste of time during the interval also increased the degree of inconvenience to the audience.

The organisers deserve major credit for putting in lot of efforts even at the eleventh hour to attract such a huge crowd rarely seen there before for Goan Tiatros. However, in the Hall everything was not in order due to lack of proper management.

Besides good story, one of the reasons for gaining so much of fame for this Tiatro was the personal influence of the director as a high ranking professional Police Officer which also aroused curiosity in the people to see this Tiatro. When Dr. Simon C. Fernandes staged his Tiatro first time in Bombay half a century back, everyone was surprised to see this professional doctor staging his Tiatro and because of this people’s curiosity aroused in Dr. Simon’s Tiatro making people to see his Tiatro in big number though his Tiatros were very good.

The other reason for the popularity of Dy. S.P. Sammy Tavares’ Tiatro was the very good marketing and publicity strategy followed by him. The third reason was the enormous goodwill he enjoyed from the community members thru his strong personal contacts – just like Dr. Simon - because as I know, of the clean record of his in the service having not involved in any scandal normally associated with the Policemen of any rank. Normally Goan Police force is considered as the most corrupt Police Force where bribery, chicanery, rape, extortion and other type of corruptions are rampantly associated with their service. By keeping his record clean in the eyes of public, Dy. S.P. Sammy Tavares remained above suspicion thus gaining good name for him and respect.

The story of the Tiatro is good yet it was not something new, it was a common story many times earlier shown by other writers and directors in a similar manner or with little differently. This does not mean to belittle the good efforts of the director in dishing out a very good lesson to the present generation who are prone to desert their elderly parents.

All the artistes acted in this Tiatro gave their best to make this Tiatro a big success and if it became a hit everywhere it was mainly because of the sterling roles played by every artiste of course gigantically and majestically with minor flaws here and there by the few.

In this context I must make especial mention for the role played by the seasoned artiste Felcy as a mother, Justin as a father and Godwyn & Mathew Araujo as sons. As a piece of advice to Mathew Araujo, for his every entry on the stage he is sprinting like Ussein Bolt, it is not necessary. Roma and Rosalia both as young daughters-in-law made good impact of them.

In comedy role, seasoned comedian John D’Silva played a heroic role of which type earlier he was not easily seen. He gave his best as if it was his own Tiatro. Never in Kuwait before he became such a darling of the audience as it was in “Aplea Bhurgeam Sangatak”. He was strongly supported in his performance by the other two comedians Sally and Saby.

Among the side show songs, Felcy and Roma both sang beautifully their song, Anthony San with Roma rendered a nice duet, Lawry Travasso rendered both his solos meaningful and Ancieto also sang well his solo where he displayed his powerful voice. Marcus Vaz’s solo as illegitimate son was well received by the audience so also his quartet along with Lawry Travaaso, Xavier Gomes and Cajetan de Sanvordem on vulgarity on Goan Beaches.  As expected pretty looking Sonia Sirsat rendered both her solos well.

In the absence of any political song, side show looked a bit nude while director’s solos though meaningful yet lacked the required punch in his delivery. It looked like a poor inning of the captain in cricket match. The urge of Kuwait audience in political songs remained unfulfilled turning them sour and thus making the Tiatro less palatable for them. The need of Francis de Tuem was felt very badly.

Compared to what I saw this Tiatro in Goa, in Kuwait it failed to rise up to the expected level. The opening “bhogti” song failed to reach to its crescendo thereby diminishing the beauty of this song.

A MUST SEE TIATRO "APLEA BHURGEAM SANGATAK" IN KUWAIT ON FRIDAY 28.09.12.

On Friday 28th of this month the Tiatro ‘Aplea Bhurgeam Sangatak’ written and directed by Dy. S.P. Sammy Tavares will be staged at American International School Hall, Maidan Hawallly, Kuwait, starting at 5.00 pm. The participating artistes and Musicians are coming from Goa in addition to some locals and some coming from Dubai especially to take part in this Kuwait Show.

In Goa by the seasoned and matured audience accepted this Tiatro as one of the best with an interesting story surrounded around family life. Even those people who saw this Tiatro in Europe and in the Gulf countries echoed similar feelings and precisely because of this high rating it was staged innumerable times. Now it is the turn of Kuwait audience to see this Tiatro live on Friday and those Kuwaitkars interested in watching a good Tiatro must not miss this opportunity.

During my recent visit to Goa I had an opportunity to witness this Tiatro at Kala Academy in Panjim and as a seasoned audience I had to admit that this is a very good Tiatro penned by the director. The selection of the artistes for the roles was very appropriate. Especial mention must go to the role played as Mother by veteran Felsy. The song rendered by Felsy along with stage attractive Roma with their attractive matching dresses was very beautiful. The roles played by both the daughters-in-law Roma and charming Rosalia worth admiring. Seeing her for the first time I got a very good impression of Rosalia as an actress. Her beautiful and attractive looks give an added booster for her role. The comedy role played by comedian John D’Silva was really superb. He has lot of similarities with the gigantic comedian of yesteryears the late Jacinto Vaz. His comedy along with Sally and his third partner creates peals of laughter in the hall.

Though I saw this Tiatro once in Goa but again I will see it in Kuwait not only because it is worth seeing but more because of the opening ‘bhogti’ song which is very prominently sung in our Churches. This song in the beginning itself take the audience to the higher level mentally. This ‘bhogti’ song is "Jivitantlem Vaddoll Marta Tedna…" was very beautifully rendered by the very beautiful and attractive voice from behind the curtain. I as a poor man would like to pay my  rich tributes to this angelic voice. The musical score provided very beautifully by the musicians for this song gave an added booster for this song. Kuwait audience especially the Church goers should not miss this song. For this reason all who are attending this Tiatro must reach in time.

The late Maestro Johnson the leader of once famous Band in Goa, Johnson and his Jolly Boys is on record to see thrice the "Sat Dukhi" Tiatro of J.P. Souzalin only to listen and enjoy the very beautiful and sorrowful Motet played by the musicians in one of the sorrowful scenes of Sat Dukhi.

Similarly many Tiatro lovers saw ‘Aplea Bhurgeam Sangatak’ twice and thrice only to listen to the mentioned ‘bhogti’ song ‘Jivitantlem Vaddol Marta Tedna’.

Dy. S.P. Sammy Tavares being the first time director staging his first Tiatro and attaining top success means an extra ordinary feat. Rarely in the history of Tiatro such a sucess has been achieved by the Tiatrists. 

To facilitate the availability of the Gate Passes, the organisers of this Tiatro kept the Gate Passes with Martha at Raja Stores, Kuwait City.

If anybody wants to see a good family story then he or she must not miss this Tiatro on Friday.

THE LATE TIATRIST ALEXINHO DE CANDOLIM.

On 28th of this month in his birth pllace Candolim, the lovers of Alexinho de Candolim wilL be celebrating his birth centenary. He was born a century back in Candolim at Araddy Vaddo that gave birth also to another renowned Tiatrist of yesteryears the late Effie Fernandes.

Commenting on Alexinho de Candolim, once at Arpora School its the then great Principal Fr. Menonca said "Alexinho de Candolim, Oh my God, what a great man he is. If this man had little educational background, he would be a genius". This remark was made by Fr. Mendoonca after listening on Emmisora de Goa the great song of Alexiho de Candolim "Kottecho Bikari".

As a songster Alexinho de Candolim was a real genius. Now nobody sings the songs of the type he was composing and singing. His voice was very attractive. When he first time entered at Bangwaddy Stage in Bombay to sing his solo, he was fabulously applauded by the audience and immediately the then Konkani weekly Goa Times' editor in his review wrote "Konkani Palkacher Ek Novem Noketr Udelam".

All his songs recorded at Emmisora de Goa during the Portuguese rule were excellent. These songs should go to the ears of the current and future enerations.

Hence, it is important that a CD should be made of all his songs by approaching All India Radio Panjim just as Jr. Rod did for the songs of his legendary Tiatrist father the late Minguel Rod.by preserving his songs in the form of Audio Cassette under the title "Nou Bhurgeancho Pai".

Since Tomazinho Cardozo is on forefront to mark the centenary of Alexinho de Candolim he should take a lead in producing the CD of Alexinho de Candolim's songs. With his contact at All India Radio, Tomazinho can move mountains. For this great job money should not be a hindrance, Candoikar supporters and lovers of Alexinho de Candolim I am sure will surely contribute, including this writer.

Alexinho de Candolim made the name of his village Candolim immortal so it is now turn of Candoikar thru the CD of his songs to make his songs immortal. All his songs are very rich and posterity should enjoy the richness of same.

BOARD WITHIN A BOARD IN GULF GOANS HOTELS CO.

We read in English literature that there was a Play within the Play as described by Shakesphere in Hamlet; we heard there was a Cabinet within the Cabinet as stated by the former Congress President Nijalingappa calling .it a “Kichddi” Cabinet but we never heard before that there was a Board within the Board of Directors. However it is the first time that this writer came to know that in Gulf Goans Hotels Co. there is one more Board within the official Board of Directors whose De Facto Chairman is seated in Canada and thru remote control directs his stupid colleagues in Goa and thus he conducts the business of Hotel Goan Heritage as per his cunning wishes. All the Directors who are idiots are giving their allegiance to him because he is feeding them well at the cost of the Hotel.

In fact what is happening in the Hotel very few directors are aware. All the major and critical decisions are taken by this Kichddi Board. How many Directors are aware that a Four Wheel vehicle of the company was disposed to whom and at what price by the Kichddi Cabinet without proper procedure? How many Directors were taken into confidence before publishing the company Newsletter? How many Directors were aware Chairman Justin from Saligao like an idiot wrote false allegations against A. Veronica Fernandes without proper evidence? Justin is a “Rostad” Chairman and all those who are with him are equally Rostad otherwise he should be sacked for putting company’s interest into jeopardy.

Sometime back due to the last minute refusal of the boy to tie knot with the daughter of Alex Wilson Coelho the wedding reception scheduled at Hotel Goan Heritage was cancelled at the last minute incurring heavy losses to the Hotel. Does all the Directors aware that this loss of revenue for the Hotel reimbursed by Coelho or just because he is a Director it was written off?

While all the resident Directors are not informed properly of what is happening in the Hotel business what will be the position of the Non-Resident Idiots who are not even ashamed to be dummy Directors when they are incapable to perform their duty from a distance?

This Kichddi Board as given to understand is looting the Hotel thereby denying the members greater share of dividends. On coming Saturday during the Annual General Body Meeting shareholders must ask all the Directors whether they are taken into confidence when taking any decision by the Board.

In order to get opportunity for the Kichddi Board to play its corrupt role one already forced to resign useless Diirector was reinstated who is nothing but a Yes man while one officially elected Director by the shareholders in the last meeting is still not inducted into the Board on the insistence of the Kichddi Board. This is the challenge to the shareholders mandate which should be fought with all the powers at the disposal of Shareholders till this elected director is officially inducted into the Board with immediate effect. The Board has no authority to overrule shareholders mandate.

The Kichddi Board is all set to meet with its Waterloo if not today then surely tomorrow when all their past sins will be thrown on their faces. Nonresident Directors must take maximum care because being useless in the Board they think they are too important. For the promotion of Hotel they are like Dead Wood.

The Kichddi Board has got a very dirty habit of accusing shareholders of playing negative role when shareholders display openly their concern for the wellbeing of the Hotel. Good that shareholders are playing a very constructive and vigilant role to protect the Hotel otherwise both the Wilsons as per their tradition would not only sell the Hotel with hefty commission for them but with the Hotel they both by fooling their colleagues would even sell the shareholders not only bodily but also soully. This is their capacity in cunningness. Every shareholder interested in the Hotel must not only remain vigilant but must also act vigilant.

FALSE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST A. VERONICA FERNANDES BY GULF GOANS HOTELS CO. BOARD.

Recently Gulf Goans Hotels Co. in its “Newsletter” signed by its Chairman and Managing Director F. J. Fernandes and circulated to the shareholders accuses A. Veronica Fernandes for writing crude and vulgar articles in www.kranti.com and in www.goa-world.com . This is absolutely a false allegation against A. Veronica Fernandes made by the liar F. J. Fernandes on behalf of the board of directors.

If F. J. Fernandes and his entire board of directors who is party to this allegations are real sons of their real fathers then they will prove with genuine evidence that A. Veronica Fernandes is the real author of the articles mentioned in their allegations. Otherwise they will be all bloody …………. We know what we call the illegitimate sons.

Thru these false allegations the board of directors of Gulf Goans Hotels Co. has cleared the way for A. Veronica Fernandes to file a defamation case against the board of directors including those two stupid seated in Kuwait.

According to the information, A. Veronica Fernandes is trying to file defamation cases separately against both the Kuwait based directors in Kuwait courts because both are residents of Kuwait and both are party to the false allegations against A Veronica Fernandes by virtue of being members of the board headed by F. J. fernandes.

With this ignorant type of working by the board how Hotel Goan Heritage will flourish? With the association in the board of crooks and thieves Hotel Goan Heritage will never make real progress. Under the leadership of idiotic minded F.J. Fernandes the future of the company is going to be very bad. F. J. Fernandes is not a suitable person for his job, he cannot talk properly and he is totally at the mercy of his Master’s Voice from behind the curtain. He cannot conduct proceedings of the meet and he lacks knowledge to run company affairs. Company is paying him handsome salary plus perks – what for? It is a waste of company money to spend on such a stupid man who does not know his job properly. It is time now for him to relinquish his job otherwise on 28th meet he should be told by all the shareholders in one strong and loud voice to “GET OUT”. Company is not his father’s property nor that of any director. Shareholders are as equal as the board in deciding what is good and what is bad for the company.

During his residence in Kuwait F. J. Fernandes was the most stupid man among all the Goans and this being the case what good he will do for the progress of the company?

F. J. Fernandes said A. Veronica Fernandes wrote vulgar articles but first of all he must see in his own board there is one renowned vulgar man who is known to demand Sex from young girls in exchange of job.

In the forthcoming shareholders meet on 28th of this month shareholders must strongly press the marbles of F. J. Fernandes demanding concrete evidence to prove the allegations made against A. Veronica Fernandes. Otherwise tomorrow they may do worse stupid things leading company into further troubles.

KICK ALEX WILSON COELHO OUT OF GULF GOANS HOTELS CO.

Gulf Goans Hotels Co. Ltd is the brain child of Mr. Vincente D’Souza who was a long timer in Kuwait and known to have initiated lot of activities for the cause of Goans in Kuwait. Hotel Goan Heritage at Calangute built by this company under his leadership will remain as the Monument of his initiative in this venture. Though as a fitting tribute to his contribution in initiating this company should be the erection of his Bust in front of the Hotel Heritage if not a full-fledged Monument. No other shareholder in this company deserves as much accolades as Vincente D’Souza.

But, according to the circular issued recently by Alex Wilson Coelho one of the Board Members it is he who has done everything to erect this Hotel. First of all he was nowhere in the picture when Vincente D’Soza formed this company. Coelho came into picture at a later date and at one particular time he did a good job with the Help of the then Minister Francisco Sardinha to give a push to start the erection of this Hotel. Surely he deserved credit for this job but not to take entire credit for himself by robbing the credit going to the other members of the Board as well. In this way Coelho feels he was fully responsible for the development of Hotel Heritage. He should know and other shareholders too that this Hotel came up due to the combined and collective efforts of all the members of the Board under the Chairmanship of Flav Pimenta who really slogged hard to bring this project up and NOT WITH THE INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS OF ALEX WILSON COELHO. Coelho must stop falsely praising himself like “KHETEM” (Monkey).

If Coelho is a real gentleman he should apologize to the earlier Board members for degrading them by robbing the credit goes to them also. The company had entrusted the task of developing its work to the then Chairman Pimenta with a handsome salary package and many times Coelho assisted the Chairman. Without Coelho the Chairman was capable of getting the work done because it was his job for which he was paid. Coelho must first tender his unconditional apology to Mr. Pimenta for ignoring his hard work. Shareholders must not keep silence on this goof made by Coelho. He got dirty habit of taking all credit for himself only for all the work not done by him. He is the thief of robbing credit meant for others too.

On 28th of this month there is an election in Goa to re-elect 3 Board Members, two of them are Kuwait based, one Joseph Rebello who is useless in the board and yet shamelessly recontesting when he knows from Kuwait he cannot deliver the goods and as such he should withdraw from the contest paving the way for the fresh blood. Joseph should know that this job is not like doing Church service to kill free time. He is an unknown entity among shareholders as well as in Kuwait. And the second Alex Wilson Coelho a Canada based Goan from Curtorim and holding a foreign Passport.  Mr. Coelho is a man of questionable character, sexually perverted known for demanding sex from girls in exchange of job and yet he calls himself a social worker. People in Kuwait dubbed him as SEXOLOGIST but best title for him not social worker but SEX WORKER.

Besides, Mr. Coelho as a member of core body of Kuwait Goan Evacuees Society was responsible to dupe Kuwait Goan Evacuees to the tune of lakhs of rupees otherwise if he is the real son of his real father he should declare openly what happened to this fund and how much was the fund. With this type of financial scandals surrounding his neck can any sensible person trust him? For such a person can any share holder re-elect in board unless that shareholder wants to ruin his company. He is also involved in the fund scandal of Goan Welfare Society Kuwait.

Re-electing him in the Board on 28th of this month will be done only by the “Chor” and crooks like him. Major shareholders like Sam Alphonso and Philip Ferdinand must take note of this and accordingly act to save the company from going into the hands of thieves and rascals.

Hence, to save the company which came into being by the sweat and blood of the Kuwaitcars, on 28th of this month shareholders must KICK OUT ALEX WILSON COELHO FROM THE BOARD.

Birth Centenary Celebrations of Aleixinho de Candolim

Villagers of Candolim will celebrate Birth Centenary of one of the greatest tiatr artistes of Konkani stage – Aleixinho de Candolim. The Centenary Celebrations will begin with a thanks giving Mass on 29^th of September, 2012 at the church of Our Lady of Good Hope, Candolim. This will be followed by the inaugural function at 5.30 p.m. on the same day at St. Theresa’s School Complex, Candolim. On this occasion veteran tiatr artiste John Claro Fernandes will be the Chief Guest while Prince Jacob – President of Goa Tiatr Academy and Fr. Robin Romualdo Rodrigues - Parish Priest of the Candolim church will be the guests of honour. The Birth Centenary Celebrations are organized by Aleixinho de Candolim Birth Centenary Celebrations Committee headed by Agnelo Fernandes in collaboration with Kala Mogi, Candolim led by Tomazinho Cardozo.

 Born on 9^th July 1913 in Candolim, Aleixinho de Candolim started to sing in Tiatrs at a very young age. He scripted his first tiatr entitled ‘Putanchea Duddvanchi As ani Avoyche Disgras’ in 1935. He himself composed all the songs and staged the tiatr with the help of village boys. The tiatr was liked by the people and the work of Aleixinho was well appreciated. Aleixinho established himself as a good writer and director too.

In all Aleixinho de Candolim scripted, directed and staged 27 tiatrs. These were staged in Goa as well as in Bombay. Some of his most popular tiatrs are: ‘Mhatarponn’, ‘Goycho Posorkar’, ‘Amcho Pordes’, ‘Mhojo Ghov Basurkar’, ‘To Bavtto Dhormancho’, ‘Ram Ram Baoji’, ‘Sonvsarant Konn Konnacho’, ‘Omtea Kollxear Udok’ ani ‘Amchea Xetachi Pavnni’. Most of his tiatrs were based on social issues existing at that time in the Goan society.

Aleixinho de Candolim Birth Centenary Celebration Committee and Kala Mogi Candolim have planned to organize numerous activities in this centenary year. Some of the activities are: (i) Kantaram Singing Competition for the villagers, (ii) A football tournament in memory of Aleixinho De Candolim, (iii) Workshops for tiatr artistes in script writing, acting, lyrics composing, etc. (iv) Production of an Audio Album of the songs of Aleixinho de Candolim, (v) Naming an appropriate place after Aleixinho de Candolim, (vi) Publication of a biography of Aleixinho de Candolim, (vii) Staging the Tiatr “Amchea Xetachi Pavnni” written by Aleixinho de Candolim, etc. The concluding function will take place on 9^th July 2013.

All tiatr lovers are cordially requested to attend the inaugural function on 29^th September which will be followed by a cultural programme of songs of Aleixinho de Candolim rendered by the well known singers from Candolim village besides comedy skits and mimicry presented by popular tiatr artistes namely Comedy Supremo Humbert, Commedian Pitush, Mimicry King Shaik Amir, Anil Pednekar and others.

Tomazinho Cardozo
