Grand Meet at Calangute.

A heavy tun out as expectedly witnessed the meeting called by Calangute Front for Responsible Tourism (CFRT) on Sunday at 5.00 pm at Calangute Curch Square. The convenor Anthony D Souza of Clangute took lot of pains to organise this meet.

Anthony D'Souza was ably supported in this venture by all his coleagues and especially the Calangute Church.
The meet started with a group dance and prayer song and a skit highlighting the ill effects of the dirty tourism spread in Goa by the local Government and local Panchayat bodies.

Among the topmost speakers who created records in their areas and in their respective fields in Goa, Geraldine Fernandes Chairperson of the Benaulim Citizens Action Committee appealed to the people of Goa to unite under one banner to save Goa . She stated that the Ganv Ghor Rakhan Manch was a forum to cover all villages in Go and that the collective efforts would stop the rampant destruction going on.

Ms Adolphine Thamm an activist from Sinquerim Bardez highlighted the issue at Sinquerim plateau way back in 2000 when the Taj Group of hotels intended to open up a three and a half lac recreation park with cine houses swimming pools and hundred houses . This was opposed tooth and nail until the Management took the Directorate of Panchayat to Court and pursued the matter for six long years.. With the help of the Parish priest of Sinquerim Fr David Filinto the issues of sewage waste etc they pursued the matter with the authorities.

Pravin Sabnis GBA rendered a beautiful song "Goa lies over the mountains , My Goa lies around the rivers Bring back oh bring back my Goa to me to me” He reminded the people that while Government does development to satiate its greed the people should make out one for their needs To achieve this he said the Goans should have to put in a moratorium of no fights with one another, visit the villages themselves and make an inventory of the things around the village and then have a development plan. Mr Sabnis was shocked that a Minister for Panchayati Raj was taking an unconstitutional stand declaring that he would permit mega projects if Panchayats through the Gram Sabhas opposed them . This runs contrary to oath sworn by him to protect the Constitution. As the 73rd Constitutional amendment had in 1992 given full powers to village development plans and the gram sabhas. He warned the Police officials at Orlim that the people of Goa would take the law in their own hand if they continued to harass the peaceful agitators. (Referring to a large number of people from Orlim who had attended this meet.)

Ben Evangelist a tiatrist from Benaulim wittingly spoke about his own social background that he came from the family of coastal belt and that during his youth he would see the Rampons along the beach now where stand the starred hotels declared out of bounds for locals . The traditional fishermen went to trawl at 5 fanthoms into the sea and now the motor boats have replaced the purseiners along the beach. His quoted late Chirs Perry from Margao who had a love for Goa’s tourism cradle Calangute and said he would roll in the grave to see Calngute destroyed and warned Goans to wake up and safeguard our lands. He blamed the Bhatcars of Goa (some of whom were on the crowd for selling the land to non goans and now partaking in such movements.

Mr Shyam Subder Naik from Advalpale in Bicholim in his analysis narrated how his village which was named as a jungle area was being destroyed . Mining had stopped in 2000 but the slag flowed from the pits from the mined earth (remember fore every 1 part of ore there are three Parts of rejects. Now with the China demand for low grade ore There are several leases being opened and the field have been destroyed.

Ramesh Gauns from Bicholim activist (Mining areas ) reminded people that the Government was like the blind men who were feeling the elephant. They do not know what they are doing . He said the people of Calangute are affected by Assonora for it is from her that their water needs are met He said that there are nearly seven water networks of which five are in the area of mining belt which is spread along 95 kms . There are 42 tributaries and four rivers and these will be saturated with over 610 leases oif mining being permitted. There are nearly 40, 000 traditional fishermen etc who would be affected with the saturation of water . There will be no tourism. (Incidentally the Carambolim lake has suddenly dried up baffling all )

Soter D Souza an activist on Panchayati Raj urged the people to demand a social audit on development during the last 20 years and the benefit to Goans . He asked the people to urge the government to carry out rural based housing industries etc instead of mega projects.

Anthony Veronica Fernandes from Candolim recalled that he as an activist had always kept the interest of Goans in mind. Though thirty years in Kuwait he had always held the Goans interest at heart . He likened the Goan issue to Palestinians who were fighting for their homeland. He said Candolim in the early 1960’s started to be the hippies bastion. He had protested their presence because of drugs . Today they have come in a high profile life styles. He pledged full support for the agitation.

Though he and many like him are in the Gulf yet they have equal responsibility to protect the interest of Goa and Goans. He concluded by saying that Goa is sold today to non-Goans only by the "Rostad" Goan Bhattkars to the thunderous applaus from the audience. His speech was applauded more than that of anybody.

Fr Maverick Fernandes, Council for Social Justice and Action reminded the large gathering that article 21 of the Constitution not only safeguarded the right to life but also to decent living. Are we being permitted decent living ? he questioned.. He said that there was no need for the government to take action against the will of the people . He said the 73rd amendment had already allowed gram sabhas to decide what is best for the village. Hence if every Goan is concerned with the future of Goa and they love their children then they should spare some time to put in place village development plans. The issue of Free Port the issue of Regional Plan SEZ and several other movements Nylon 6 6 Meta strips Konkan Railway and now the casinos were all agitations which were led as the Government actions were against the will of the people.

Rajan Korgaonkar from Baga was surprised to see how the development had changed . He stated that there was an occasion when there was a person from south who visited north Goa and was shocked that narrow by lanes drains lakes were destroyed . He could even not identify prominent landmarks. A number of foreigners who came to Goa in the early seventies were surprised at the changes and said this does not auger well for the Goans. We need to spare time for the future of Goa .

Mr Herman Abreu of Raia who now lives in Sinquerim sang a beautiful composition of Bob Marlee urging Goans to stand up and act . The audience stood on its feet and then clapped and sang in unison at the beat.

A pictorial diplay of "Rape of Goa" was presented by Rajan Parikar describeing the destruction along the coastline from Polem to Patradevi.

UNFIT GOAN CLUB PRESIDENTS

To
Mr Veronica
The Editor
Kranti

Please post this article on your website as soon as possible.

Regards
Peter Gomes

I agree with you Mr Veronica that most of the Goan organizations are run by unfit and uncultured people. It is such a shame that people who are holding good jobs are made the presidents and vice presidents of the Goan organizations while qualified people are made to sit out.

Many of the so-called presidents of the Goan organizations cannot even speak proper English and seem totally ignorant about the developments taking place around them. How will they be able to inspire their members? This itself speaks about our rotten Goan culture. We are only good at organizing ballroom dances and wasting money on useless events.

None of the Goan organizations have organized any quiz or sporting activities for school students. Other communities organize a variety of programmes but Goans are busy pulling down each other. There is a Perzent Of a Goan organization who is bhotto but he manages to win the elections by bribing the members.

Presidents of Goan organisations seem busy in pocketing the profit that they make from this “Faltu” dance shows. These dances are a bad influence on our culture because our youth are getting morally corrupt. A look at the dances shows that young boys and even girls puffing away to glory.

Some bring along their katre and nade boyfriends to these shows and their parents don’t even mind. I blame the parents for not keeping an eye on their children. I know a Goan family in which both the mother and the daughter are serviced by a nado. And the father is such a lolo and rostad that he does not mind. I think Goan organizations should look beyond the dance shows and do something for the student community as well as the runaway maids.

Also try to come up with some worthy projects back home rather than squandering their funds. There should be accountability and transparency among the organizations. Only then I think we will be able to control the funds.

If you look at the Filipino activities, they are focusing more on social activities rather than cultural activities. I truly admire the support of their organizations towards the society..

I ask you Mr Veronica to continue writing on the important issues about our community and hope you will continue your campaign against corrupt Goans.

DECLARATION OF PROFIT OF THE FUNCTION.

DECLARATION OF PROFIT OF THE FUNCTION.

When we organize our functions such as Socials, Tiatros and Ballroom dancing we invite people by selling tickets to them. Many of the people who attend such functions they do so only to patronise these functions so as to help the organizers to promote their activities. Many people purchase the tickets but don’t attend the functions because they want to help the organizers monetarily to further the cause for which they organize their functions. When they purchase the tickets for such functions then they become obligated to know whether it was a success or not, whether the organizers have made any profit or not. And by duty, the organizers are more obligated, duty bound to inform their patrons and everyone who supported them by purchasing the tickets the full income and expenses or at least the profits acquired by organizing their functions. It is not enough to disclose the profit or loss only to the committee members of the Associations. Such functions are organized also with the help of all those who purchased the tickets and who also got right to know the outcome of their support. Hence, full transparency is imperative. If the organizers do not want to be transparent openly and publicly then they should organize their functions with the help of their committee members only. In which case they should not sell their tickets to outside their circle.

Unfortunately in Kuwait according to my knowledge with the exception of two Konkani associations none of the Goan Associations discloses its profits openly because there is no transparency in their activities – transparency to the public who support them by purchasing their tickets. Transparency to those whom they plead and beg to purchase their tickets. It is not enough to disclose their profits only to their committees. Ticket purchasers are bound by rights to know the profits. Many of our Associations are in the hands of “chors” and in the name of the community they rob the support of the people. It is these associations that disgrace the fair image of the community. These associations are not doing any good for the community; these associations are a curse on Goa and Goans. Unfortunately these associations are manned by “Bebdes” also. The major fund of the major Goan association is held in the personal account of three Curtorcars – tegui chors – because they are withholding what belongs to the account of their association and those who support them and elect them are equally “chors” of first grade because “chors” support and elect “chors” only. Otherwise good people would never support and elect people of dubious character.

If anybody thinks there are people of integrity and dignity in this major association of Goans then they are sadly mistaken. There are all cowards and crooks. Where are the Marios and Manuels from this association gone? Why they cannot challenge the rogues in their association? Where are the Carmos, Julios and Cajys gone? Why they cannot awaken other members? Where are the rest of the members who claim to be upright gone now? What will they do once they return to Goa? Will people especially their own villagers, neighbours and even family members have confidence in them for doing justice? I have lost my confidence in everyone of them. Like in Goa, in Kuwait too the affairs of Goans are gone into the hands of “chors” “bamttes” and “bebdes”. According to one source, the three “chors” have made a pact with the rest of the members who got them elected to share the lakhs with them. For this reason they are allowing the three “chors” to do what they want. Why money only they will share? If I go one step further in the words of one Goan, the guilty members will even share their wives and daughters with the three “chors”. For this reason there is silence over the looted money.

In future, people should not patronize the functions organized by associations manned by persons of questionable character. Unfortunately only the people of questionable character patronize functions of such associations.

Editor,
Kranti.

First off all I would like to congratulate you for taking up important issues. Great going...Keep doing what you are doing.

The aim of this blog is to thank Kranti for exposing a so-called leader who was ostensibly involved in sexual harassment of a girl. I was shocked by the revealation that the president of GWS was involved in sexual harassment. I know this man personally and never for a second thought that he could stoop to such a low level. His fundas about doing this and that for the community is merely lip service. It is not that he has not helped people. I know a quite a few people whom he helped but that is all undone the moment his name was linked to sexual harassment.

I think Kranti should investigate a bit more on this issue and bring more facts to light about the matter relating to sexual harassment and this is a serious crime and if proved then he should quit all the posts he is holding. Otherwise it is an insult to the whole community. His silence on this issue only confirm my suspicions. This is not the first time that allegations of sexual advances have been leveled against him. Kranti was the first to nail him on this aspect and we have not seen any response from him so far. So it is a foregone conclusion.....

BOYCOTT EDWARD FALEIRO.

BOYCOTT EDWARD FALEIRO.

According to the latest information, NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro is visiting former Portuguese colony Mozambique where there are many Goans settled. African Mozambique was like Goa a Portuguese colony but not till 1961 but till somewhere 1976 where it got independence from the Portuguese when Portugal itself was freed from its own dictatorial Government. Portugal till 1976 was ruled by dictatorial Salazarist system, first by Salazar and after him by Marcelo Caetano. But once this system was overthrown by the home people, the new Government gave freedom to its colonies namely Angola and Mozambique. The local Mocambiqan were fighting for long against the Salazarist regime to get them freedom, even Goans settled in Mozambique were as Salazarist recruits in Portuguese Government of Mozambique were fighting against the local freedom fighters under FRELIMO and others and so many of our youthful Goans were killed in this war. Mozambique is a rich country in natural resources and it’s the then capital Lourenco Marquis was considered as one of the best tourist spots in the world, its natural beauty attracted tourists from all around the globe. So much so, impressed by its beauty, one of the senior tiatrists of Goa after visiting it during the Portuguese era in Goa even composed a beautiful romantic song named “Lourenco Marquis” and it continued thus “kitlo sobit to gaum, polloun pisso zalom aum” etc.

After its independence, Lourenco Marquis was rechristened as Maputo where there are many Goans absorbed in employment and business, some are already married to the locals and well settled with deep integration in the local culture, tradition and history. Though they are well settled there yet they have great love for Goa and their houses and properties. Though official language there is Portuguese and everyone speak this language yet many Goans especially the elders in their midst still talk Konkani and even organized their tiatros occasionally though younger generation have created a distance between them and Konkani. But they still feel proud to be called as “Goes. Eduardo Faleiro will be there very shortly. By virtue of being a NRI Commissioner, Faleiro is enjoying the rank of a Cabinet Minister in Goa and with enormous public money at his disposal he will spend some days there. Doing what? And what can he do? What is he capable of achieving there for the Goans settled there?

Dear Mocambiqan Goans, don’t rely on Faleiro for anything. He is incapable of doing anything for you. His trip to Maputo will be only as sight seeing at the cost of poor Goan taxpayers. Don’t support him; he is wasting public money for his nonsensical trips to Africa. He will speak fluently in Portuguese and will give an impression to you that he is fully for you. But don’t believe him. Whatever you ask and say he will nod his head in agreement but once he is back in Goa he will show you his “konko”. I am sure he must be having somebody of his there whom he will give one of the next year’s NRI awards. He will select only the best “Rostad” for this award because “Rostad” selects “Rostad” only. This year he has given NRI awards to some of the best “Rostad”. I call them Rostad because without being eligible and without being deserving these "Rostad" have accepted these awards shamelessly. They should have turned down these awards saying “No Edward, please, I don’t deserve this because I have not done anything much that deserve this award”. But to say so, one has to be the real son of his real father. Rostad will never say so because they are crooks and cunnings, these are the real qualities of "Rostad", for this reasons they are called "Rostad" and not trusted by good people in society. This is the reason why "Rostad" are not trusted in legitimate society. Eduardo Faleiro like such people only and Goa Government is making a big mistake by giving him a free hand to use his powers the way he wants. Opposition parties are also silent because they are more occupied in home politics, they are not interested in expatriate Goans politics. Even during the invasion of Kuwait, when we organized our movement in support of Kuwait neither Goa Government under PDA nor opposition parties supported us. Our affairs were irrelevant for them. They were better occupied in their affairs only.

On whose advice Edward Faleiro selected some of the awardees from Gulf still nobody knows. Edward Faleiro cannot make NRI Forum as if it is his “Xepaicho Fath”. And the undeserving recipients cannot blame their critics for criticizing them for receiving these awards undeservingly. The criticism so far aired is just a tip of an iceberg. The undeserving "Rostad" NRI awardees will be stripped further till they accept their folly of accepting NRI awards undeservingly. The "Rostad" NRI awardees are full of faults not only in public life but even in their personal and private life. They should not be allowed to "Mezailem Kellem Kaddun Saguad zoddpak". Once you receive these awards you become a public property for public to comment either good or bad. If anybody is unable to bear this genuine criticism, then he should surrender his award. This debate will not easily stop here. It will remain for posterity to comment because of the guilty recipients. I am surprised how “Redde & Padde” fighting amidst us but share the same platform during the NRI prize distribution ceremony. These are shameless people, they have no category. They fall under the "below category line".

Now, my request to Mozambiqan Goans to be alert and if possible do not associate with Eduardo Faleiro when he comes there. The Goa based politicians are crooks of first grade. His coming there will be nothing but a waste of public money. Don’t support him there in Mozambique. Boycott him. His coming there will surely have some ulterior motove for his own benefits and not for the benefits of Goans there. He is making a mess of NRI Forum. My Goan brothers and sisters in Mozambique, support us in supporting Goan causes genuinely by boycotting Edward Faleiro. Supporting Edward Faleiro is like supporting crooks and traitors. We dont want such crooks and traitors amidst us. The real Goans are not crooks and traitors.

Condolence on Sheikh Saad death.

Condolence on Sheikh Saad death.

I, A. Veronica Fernandes, initiator and founder of GOA-KUWAIT SOLIDARITY CENTER, on behalf of our organisation, on behalf of my colleagues, associates, supporters and well wishers, extend my deepest sysmphaties to His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, His Highness the Crown Prince of Kuwait, His Highness the Prime Minister of Kuwait and to the Al - Sabah family, the citizens and residents of Kuwait, on the passing away of His Highness The Father Amir SHEIKH SAAD AL-ABDULLA AL-SALEM AL-SABAH, on Tuesday13th of this month - yesterday.

Sheikh Saad as we know him was a great lover of Goan community. Immediately in 1978 when he was appointed as Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Kuwait I saw him from close angle while he was walking freely at Fahad Al Salem Street - Kuwait City, hallowing and wishing everyone whom he was seeing passing by him. He was walking without armed bodyguards which made him more accessible to anyone especially to the expatriates. This shows his simplicity. A born simple man he always had a broad smile on his face.

During the invasion of Kuwait, he spent hectic days and months moving from one place to another and one country to another to garner support for the liberation of his county from the invasion of Iraq.
During the invasion of Kuwait, under GOA-KUWAIT SOLIDARITY CENTER we organised a big movement in Goa to highlight the plight of Kuwait and to demand liberation for Kuwait. In this process we organised public rallies and public meetings in Goa to air our views and to force the Government of India to support the liberation of Kuwait. All the press cuttings and Videos of our movement were sent to the Government of Kuwait in exile stationed at Taif in Saudi Arabia, thru Kuwait's Ambassador in Delhi. Along with his cabinet colleagues and others when Sheikh Saad saw our Videos and read our press cuttings he was deeply impressed by our love, affection and gratitude we Goans showed during that particular time to Kuwait from where we earn our sustenance. It is not only he but also all other Kuwaiti VIP's and other citizens showed their appreciation to Goans for standing by Kuwait during the critical time of Kuwait. Goans have created a special niche into the heart of Sheikh Saad and the Kuwait Government.

I never personally met Sheikh Saad but after going through all the Videos and press cuttings he was deeply impressed by my wisdom and courage to organise such a mighty movement in Goa inspite of himalayan opposition from the supporters of Saddam Hussein. He was keenly following all the activities we were doing in Goa in support of the liberation of Kuwait and after the liberation of Kuwait he was also following our activities in Kuwait especially our meetings at Plaza Hotel on 26th of every February to raise our voice in support of the freedom of Kuwait's POW's (Prisoners of War). To make our voice more forceful and more audible, I on behalf of G-KSC even went to Delhi and met all the top world leaders stationed at Delhi asking them to work for the speedy release of Kuwait's POW's.

In his death we lost a great admirer and lover of our Goan community and Goa Kuwait Solidarity Center. May his soul rest in peace.

Re: Disgraceful Goan!

To THE EDITOR KRANTI

From:
John Gonsalves johngonsalvess@yahoo.com
Salmiya
--------------------------------------------

The blog of one Alrdrin in your esteemed portal prompted me to react in a decisive manner for the piece of the very person smacks of bigotry and is a clear attempt at character assassination.

In his rather frivolous and verbose blog, Alrdin makes wild incuplations against Mr Santana who stirred the hornet’s nest by calling a spade a spade. Mr Santana is on the nose when he says the NRI award was given to doctor Chodankar who has become a cannon fodder for bloggers.

I earnestly request my brother A. Veronica Fernandes to keep this much debated topic alive by blogging with the same frequency as the CITY BUS.

For your information Aldrin, it is not the LOBE SYNDROME that has been haunting the nefarious DOTOR but it is rather the UROLOGY SYNDROME that has thrust the YELLOW FLUID CANTAM at the center of dispute. Don’t’ take a VACULA at the first opportunity but seize total control before you take a canola, ALDRIN.

I hope my jargon will cut mustard with you. Blogging is not your Cuppa, boy. Now that your fingers are burnt…hope you will not venture into the misty horizon.

Doctor Chodankar may have been born in Kuwait but that does not automatically qualify him for the NRI award. Going by that yardstick, even I should have bagged the NRI Award as I was and born and brought in this crade-to-grave welfare country. The DOTOR has not moved a finger in the interest of his community.

And as per the article written by Gasper Crasto in the defense of the DOTOR, the latter has conducted medical camps…so what is so great about it? As a DOTOR he is duty-bound to organize these camps in the welfare of the expat community.

As per the article, the DOTOR studied medicine in Belgaum. We know who all go to Belgaum and Dharwad to study medicine. I vividly remember that one of my classmates in 12th standard got a second class in the science stream and he happens to be the son of a well-known surgeon in Goa.

His father immediately had him enrolled in a medical college by paying a whopping 14 lakhs donation and soon a FATOR turned into a DOTOR.

No body would have cast any aspersions on the DOTOR’s award had he offered one of his kidneys to his Goan brother or sister. Then the award would have been justified.

Incidentally, the NRI Commissioner has made an absolute joshing of the awards by honoring this DOTOR, who managed to get the award on ethnic lines for the Assistant to NRI Commissioner is a Hindu himself called KAMAT. Consequently, there is substance in the statement of Santana that religion played a pivotal role as far as the awards were concerned.

Mr Aldrin, I would like to ask you a question. What has Club 9 done in the welfare of the Goan community in Kuwait? Your club may be doing charitable activities back home.

But what about the downtrodden people here? There are tens of maids awaiting to be sent home…Is it not the duty of your club members to go and visit them and if possible render financial assistance? Do I have to remind you of the good ole adage: CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME.

If dotor is the real son of his father, then he will return the award for he has become a subject of ridicule among the community along with the other two good-for-nothing awardees.

It is believed that one of the victims of Wilson Coelho, who asked sexual favour, is presently in Kuwait and is going to soon issue a statement to Kranti.

It is such a shame that this BAMON from Curtorim openly brags about his so-called achievements and takes credit for the introduction of flights to Goa. There is trouble brewing for the womanizer within GWS simply because some members are peeved at his nosy attitude. THANKS TO KRANTI THE BAMON WAS UNMASKED IN A ROYAL FASHION…JUST LIKE THE SILLAS OF WELLINGTON.

In actuality, the GWS is resting on the strong shoulder of Rabidandra Pimenta and others whose hard work is being suppressed by this womanizer.

This does not mean I have not harped on Carmo Santos. He was recently overheard telling his comrade that he wished the award was not given to him because he is sick and tired of the controversy engulfing him.

On Adeus to Saby.

The Editor,
Goa Kranti.

I liked the below mentioned article wrote by A. Veronica Fernandes on Adeus to Saby. It is very good on the part of A. Veronica to highlight such issues especially of those Goans who worked for Konkani and Tiatro. I dont know Saby personally but yet I still feel that somebody in Kuwait should have helped him in retaining his services. Where have all the tiatrists and tiatr promoters gone? Could none of them help Saby to get a substitute job and residence permit? I thought Kuwait Goans are capable people to help the rejected people but now I realise they are not. Thanks to Hilton who came to the rescue of Saby in giving him a job at least in Goa. This should be a very good lesson for all who help tiatrists in their money making business. Tiatrists are the most ungrateful people in our community. They used Saby for their benefit and finally left him unhelped.

A. Veronica in this article beautifully describes the historical happenings in Goa in fifties. I am sure many Goans will come to know the real history of Goa during that particular period and how Goans suffered while going to Bombay and returning too. A. Veronica is a historian and history genius. His knowledge on Goan history is too deep and hence he deserved highest praises as none in the Gulf. I am a keen reader of Kranti and I find through his writings Kranti is the best website among all the websites created by Goans.

Well done A. Veronica. Keep up the good work and do not care for your adversaries who are fit for nothing but only to bark like dogs. Let them bark but you go on writing good articles. People are waiting to read you more and more on Kranti. Please also highlight on more Sabys in Kuwait. You only can bring them into limelight.

Thanks.
Jerry Fernandes.

MAY BALL – A SHAM

MAY BALL – A SHAM

Dear Friends,

I am usually a person who sits on the sidelines and enjoys the show but for the first time I feel the need to speak my heart out.

Last Thursday, I was at the "GWS May Ball" along with my friends and family and I have to express the general opinion we had about the show. For each section I will point out the good first and then the bad.

Arrival:
We arrived for the event at about 11 PM and the show had only just begun. The hall was about 80% filled and remained that way for the remainder of the evening, which in a way was good because we really do not enjoy overcrowded places. At the gate, we noticed a lot of people walking in with complementary passes. So my friend who knew one of these people went up to them to ask them if they were sponsors, the reply he received was, "no, we know the president".

The Beginning:
When we took our seats the MC was calling on the president for a speech. Luckily all the introductory speeches were short and sweet. Also, the MC was very lively and upbeat, which made listening to rest easy.

Deep Impact:
They started the show and none of us have any idea how these people even get a show to begin with. The choice of music was horrible. We did however end up going to dance and let me tell you why. While the band was playing, no one was on the dance floor and the MC was constantly encouraging the crowd to get on. You could literally see the disgust in his face when he heard the band but he had a job to do and did it. One of the ladies on my table thought he looked cute and so we just went to dance to make her happy. There is no good part to this except for the fact that Deep Impact was only given one more session that too during dinner, which I will get to in a bit.

Band Wagon:
A great band to hear. It was nice to have a Goa feel for a party. I personally feel that their music was perfect for the may ball. We heard them play the saxophone for a few songs. Very very nice. It felt like we were outside Kuwait and I'm sure it touched a lot of hearts. I remember the MC asking the crowd if they wanted something faster and never before did I hear the crowd scream no. I too wanted Band Wagon to continue their slow session, it gave us goose bumps. Even after the show ended when the management was closing down, these boys played an acoustic track for the entertainment of those who were on the dance floor. Absolutely beautiful! On the other hand, the band was not given enough time to perform, which affected the entire show.

The MC:
According to almost everyone present in the hall and I'm sure if you were there you would agree that it was a delight to see a new face on the mic. Maclord (Mac), might be the best find for the organizers in a long time. As a party going person I can surely say this boy has a bright future provided he does not stick to only GWS events which can definitely be a downfall. He was lively, witty, handsome and very well spoken. The only critism I can point out is that during the course of the show, you could clearly see the disgust on his face with some of the organizers. They were forcing an interruption of the dance session and he wanted it to continue – eventually left with no choice. But in many ways we believe he saved the night.

The Pageant:
Now let me begin by saying that the invitation cards said that participants will only be allowed with gowns. This was not the case. Girls with simple dresses were also included in the contest. This made a lot of people very unhappy. The first round was ok and again hats off to Mac who used that round to draw everyone's attention to the people behind the scenes. He gave the photographer props by asking him to capture a magical moment with him right in the middle of all the contestants. It was a very creative move which prompted the whole crowd to throw in a few laughs. With that said, the round itself was just ok. The judges seemed to take forever to leave the dance floor after each round.

The second round only 10 girls were chosen, out of whom atleast 4 were wearing dresses. Again, the round was quick but the judges took the most time getting on and off.

The final round was during dinner, and it was the question round. Let me clearly point out that the questions asked were some of the worst we've heard over the years. Some of us did not even understand the questions asked and neither did the girls. I think they were changed on the spot. When the MC noticed that the girls did not understand he changed them to a small degree. And then when all the girls finished answering he asked them another quick simple 5 questions. One of the finalist did not know what to answer the first time but had a come back on the second question.

The Winners:
Although there were better looking girls in the hall, the top 3 deserved the prize. Their dresses were very nice. The only bad part here was that the sponsors gave the 1st and the 5th winner tickets which did not make sense to many of us.

So now a final summary of the entire show. I would say that the show would receive a 5 rank out of 10. And that too only because of Band Wagon and Maclord. Other than that it was a clear disappointment and I will not be attending any more May Ball's from now on. I hope my thoughts reach the right people so that they can work on improving one of the greatest shows in Kuwait. As for the May Ball 2008 – a waste of money.

Disgraceful Goan !

Dear Mr Santana,

Since I had no option, but to enlighten and correct the statement made in your article with reference to Dr Jaganath Chodankar (Club 9). Below are the facts of life. Hope this will change your sick mentality........I believe this happens if you lived long years outside the village and not able to calibrate your zone of thoughts. I personally have not met you nor would like to, as you make no sense. Also do not suck dry...hope you get my clue.

Let me clarify the following in your article about Club 9.

1) Seems you have no idea what Doctor (club 9) has been doing for the community...(you have not to be seen to be awarded) do meet us or attend our events to understand the concept of service/ charity...

2) Doctor has been awarded for his sincere efforts and commitments for the Goan community along with the team...He was Born in Q8........check with your friends...

3) Your racial comments and reference on religion has no place in harmonious Goan community....seek refuge status with the Taleban...

4) Finally I hope this will clear the left/ right lobe syndrome.

Have a nice day.

Disgraceful Kuwait NRI Awardee.

To,
The Editor.

I am not discouraging nor I am encouraging anyone, on topic of Wilson Coelho "Disgrace on NRI awardee". Let us all Goans, now learn from our mistakes and form a NRI committee in Kuwait, so that no such mistakes happen in future. We have to move ahead in life fast as its too late. I would suggest and its high time now that all the active clubs Presidents, along with active Goan social workers from Kuwait to form a NRI committee club in Kuwait. Let all Goans in Kuwait be united as one family.

DISGRACE ON NRI AWARDEE

DISGRACE ON NRI AWARDEE

Wilson Coelho - a frontline leader among Goans in Kuwait

Who nominated the awardee in Kuwait to receive the NRI Community Service Leader in Kuwait? Everyone is wondering to know and questioning each and everyone that who nominated these recipients of the awards. Some of the good community service leaders in Kuwait are already dead, left / gone or retired, etc., and one cannot understand that the awardee who fought with the Goa government to nominate himself and described as NRI Community Service Leader in Kuwait.

First of all, approximately 40,000 or above Goans, being singles or with families is residing in Kuwait since 1960’s. Do we have any NRI organizations in Kuwait? The answer is No, not at all. We have many associations of goans in Kuwait and all these associations are involved with their personal activities in collecting funds for themselves. Very few do the charity works in Kuwait. And some empty vessels make noise by doing nothing, being deserted from the own villages in Goa to live elsewhere, I’m doing this…….. I’m doing that………... and the final result is Zero.Do we have a GOA NRI Cell in Kuwait? The answer is NO. Then who nominated the awardees from Kuwait to receive the NRI awards? Can the writer answer my question?

A person who called himself as “Dayanand Narvekar” of Kuwait, greedy, keeping public money from the welfare association, requesting sex for jobs or involved in sex scandals, never ever gave a single penny from his pockets as donations to the needy and the poor, being publised on the media as a non-goans, holding Canadian Nationality, etc., shall be entitled to receive the NRI Award?

Another ambusher DOTOR from the Club Nine in Kuwait never ever seen among the goans, nor did any charity / social service to any goans, or the goan community in Kuwait received NRI award through his hindu Wasta from Goa.As the writer said in his article, that the Dayanand Narvekar of Kuwait’s ambition was to be a top police officer in Goa. Thank god for not selecting him in the police force, otherwise all the goans girls and ladies will be in more trouble for his sexual harassments.

Regarding the Hotel Goan Heritage in Calangute, Bardez – Goa, it is the hard earned money of Kuwait Goans, and I heard that the chairman of the hotel another Ex-Kuwait Goan, is lavishily enjoying his life on the expense of Kuwait Goans hard earned money.

Goan Evacuee Society formed in Goa during the invasion of Kuwait in the year 1991 and collected huge money from each and every Kuwait goans in Goa and promised that all Kuwait goans will be repatriate back to Kuwait for their jobs. Nothing has been done by this Society. They failed in their promises and the money collected by the society is gone in the pockets of Wilson Coelho and Joe Cota’s account. NRI Cell of Goa shall clarify where the money is?

GOA Day was first initiated by Joseph F X D’souza who was supported by a well known GWS member and not by Wilson Coelho, as the writer penned down in his article. He was just a member of the associations like other members too; they also should have the credit. Moreover, it was announce that the constitutions of the welfare society was supposed to be amended with new articles and shall be done by the new committee which failed till to-date.

The NRI cell of Goa thinks that GWS is the sole welfare society in Kuwait, then they should look the loopholes / corruption in money wise which has been kick off earlier by account holders of the society. What happen with the new membership which supposed to be opened for the Kuwait Goans in Kuwait? Can the writer explain since he is supporting the new Dayanand Narvekar of Kuwait?

Regarding the flights to Goa, Air India was started by the then station manager Mr. Pewekar who spoke to the audience during the visit Mr. Chandrakant Keni and his troupe in the Carlton Hotel and not by Wilson Coelho, as the wrong information penned down by the writer. Immediately after Mr. Pewekar has been transferred because he started Air India to Goa.Whereas Airfare rates are high for Goa sector, and Chennai / Calicut is less than Goa. Why?

The new GWS president is telling the Kuwait goans that he has done this and that. Will he do the justice to the poor goans who travels in the Indian Airlines and Srilankan Airlines from Kuwait and vice versa? Let's wait and watch.......

Regarding the repatriations of goan maids in Kuwait, please confirm openly on the net or media with a proof, how many maids have been repatriated? Or Print on the souvenir for the forth coming event of GWS. Then NRI Cell of Goa shall investigate this issue and bring out in their reports. Keeping in mind, the NRI Cell of Goa shall ask the Kuwait Goans who to nominate and not those who demands the NRI awards. Watch out my further comments……………

Santana Piedade Afonso,
Kuwait.

NRI Leader to be honoured by the GWS

To
The Editor
Kranti

Dear Sir

I just want to raise some important points through your esteemed portal. This is with regard to the article posted on your blog under the title: NRI Leader to be honoured by the GWS." I think the whole community knows full well that these so-called awards were only given to CHAMCHAS of the NRI Commissioner.

People who hosted the NRI Commissioner during his stay in Kuwait were the ones who got the awards. It is a known fact that many deserving candiates in Kuwait were overlooked by the office of the NRI Commissioner.

All of these awardees have never served their community but have been in the limelight for infamous reasons. I hope you will continue to write as you have always done about such issues and expose those who indulge in fraudulence.

Wilson Coelho - a frontline leader among Goans in Kuwait

NRI leader to be honored by Goan Welfare Society in Kuwait
-by Gasper Crasto

Wilson receiving the NRI Leadership Award in Goa from Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Shri Vayalar Ravi.

Kuwait: Alex Wilson Coelho, President of Goan Welfare Society (GWS), a leader in his own right, and a well-known personality among Indians in Kuwait, who was presented with the NRI Community Service Leadership Award by the Goa State Government at the ‘Conference on Indian Expatriates in the Gulf Countries’ held recently at Hotel Mandovi, Panaji – Goa, will be lauded for his great achievement by the Goan Welfare Society at its Annual Grand Event – The May Ball to be held at the grand Istiqlal Ballroom, Hotel Ramada, Riggae, on 8th May, 2008.

Wilson was among 11 frontline Goan personalities from the Gulf awarded in Goa. The awards were given for recognition of social activities and service towards the Indian community. Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Shri Vayalar Ravi presented the awards. The function was presided by Commissioner of NRI Affairs Shri Eduardo Faleiro while Chief Minister of Goa, Shri Digambar Kamat was the chief guest.

Born in Goa, Wilson first came to Kuwait in 1976 and has been involved in community service and social work ever since.

Wilson with daughter Sheena, wife Sheela and son Shane

Although Wilson holds Canadian citizenship (Overseas Citizen of India) and his family migrated to Canada, he continues to work in Kuwait and manages a colossal portfolio as Unit Head of International Lending & Contracting Unit of Burgan Bank - Kuwait.

In his younger days, Wilson completed Portuguese Segundo Ano do Liceu at Liceu National Afonso de Albuquerque – Panjim, and later studied at St. Xavier’s school, Curtorim, his hometown. He later graduated in Economics and Statistics from S.P. Chowgule College of Arts & Science, Goa. Wilson also has a degree in Physical Education from Aurangabad University and has to his credit various other achievements in leadership management relating to his field.

Wilson’s ambition in life was to join the Indian Police Service and be one of India’s top most police officers but was disappointed with the corrupt selection process, denied, and thus forced to look for greener pastures.

Accomplishments:

Wilson Coelho has accomplished many things during his residency in Kuwait. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Gulf Goans Hotels Co. Ltd (promoters of Hotel Goan Heritage in Calangute, Bardez – Goa), which is owned by NRI Goan share holders, all based in Kuwait. Wilson was primarily instrumental in getting the project to move ahead after gaining full confidence of the Board/Shareholders and presenting the project report for financing. Economic Development Corporation (EDC) of Goa had declared the project as the best project ever financed by EDC. The project has been a big success. It is paying high dividends to all its investors and shareholders.

“It was a real challenge initially to bring about harmony in the Board and get the project off the ground,” recalls Wilson, “Had I not put my efforts in the project, it would never see light of the day. I am proud to say that I still have full trust and confidence of the Board of Directors and shareholders in the affairs of this company.”

During the invasion and occupation of Kuwait by Iraq, Wilson diligently assisted in the evacuation of Indians (Goans in particular) from Kuwait and he was one of the last to leave Kuwait. He left for Mumbai on the last voyage of the ship ‘Akbar’ along with other Indian volunteers.

After a hero’s welcome in Goa by fellow evacuees, Wilson was actively involved in the Goan Evacuee Society formed in Goa and was suitably elected its Honorary President, to take the reins of Goan Welfare Society – Kuwait, an umbrella association of Goans.

Initiator of GOA Day

Wilson has been one of the persons instrumental in promoting Goan culture in Kuwait prior to the invasion of Kuwait under Kuwait Goans Association (KGA). He continued with his service after the liberation, right from the very onset of ‘Goa Day’, a festival of Goan food and culture which was first initiated in Kuwait. “The first Goa Day was attended by over 3,000 people,” says Wilson proudly, “It was a grand success and helped bring together Goan Clubs/Associations in Kuwait under one banner in friendship and unity.”

‘Goa Day’ which has become synonymous among Goans worldwide is now celebrated annually in other parts of the globe.

Wilson has helped destitute Goan maids by rehabilitating them in the Maid House under the auspices of the Indian Embassy. He has also judiciously financed their repatriation using funds of Goan Welfare Society besides undertaking donations to various charities and setting up scholarships for the needy back home in India. Wilson leaves/left no stone unturned to pursue compensation cases of accident victims in Kuwait that were brought to his notice. “Full benefits of these kind of cases have been secured for the next of kin,” disclosed Wilson.

In recognition for his dedicated services to the Goan/Indian Community in Kuwait and his academic background, Wilson was invited by Indian Community School, Kuwait to be on the Board of Trustees as representative of the Goan Community in Kuwait. He served as a Member on the Board of Trustees.

Role in issues pertaining to Goans

Time and again, Wilson has personally taken up issues pertaining to the Goan Community in Kuwait such as Immigration Clearance for domestic workers and other category of job seekers, recognition of Goa University Degrees for employment in Kuwait, attestation of Degrees at State level which is still a issue, reservation of seats for NRI students in Government and specialized private Colleges in Goa, and other innumerable issues affecting Goans in Kuwait and the Middle East including strongly lobbying for the NRI City in Goa.

Wilson Coelho speaking at one of the Indian Football Finals recently

Wilson was also one of the persons instrumental in introducing Indian Airlines direct Kuwait/Goa/Kuwait flight after the liberation of Kuwait besides re-introduction of Air India (Kuwait/Dubai/Goa/Kuwait) which brought about competition thus benefiting the travelers to Goa in terms of cheaper fares and better facilities.

Presently the Honorary President of the Goan Welfare Society (GWS), one of the largest Indian organizations in Kuwait, Wilson has managed the affairs of the Society for over 10 years now, with a team of strong and dedicated Managing Committee. The modest leader concludes, “I am proud to say that I am one of the custodian of the GWS funds with full trust and confidence of members, and I am fully accountable to the members of the Welfare Society. When the functioning of GWS was in jeopardy, I was once again compelled to take over as President, to revive the Society and bring it to the right path...”

ADEUS KUWAIT.

ADEUS KUWAIT.

I don’t think anybody in Tiatro circle in Kuwait will not know this man whose photo is appeared here below. He is none other than the Tiatro lover and Tiatro promoter Saby whose real name is Sebastian Pereira. Born at Khobravaddo Calangute, Bardez, Goa at his mother’s house and brought up in Ponda at his father’s place, Saby was taken to Bombay by his parents when he was 11 years old. It was during the peak of hostility between Portuguez Government of Goa and Bharati Government of India in mid fifties that Saby was taken to Bombay. There was travel ban between Goa and Bombay, because of this Goans could not move legally from Bombay to Goa and Goa to Bombay. There was lot of hardships Goans had to undergo to travel to Bombay and from Bombay to Goa. Yet there were some agents from Indian side who were charging some hefty amount during those days to take Goans to Bombay or up to Vengurla after crossing the Goa border. It was illegal and if you are caught on the way by the concerned authorities, you could be imprisoned and harassed and even maltreated. Some of these Indian agents were so cruel that they were even leaving you on the half way itself to the mercy of Indian highwaymen, Indian thieves, criminals and even rapists because that was the culture of those Indians but not of Goans unless those days Goans were influenced by the harsh cultural attributes of Bharatis.

Saby’s parents finally got one Ghantti agent at Mapusa who took assistance of his colleague and agreed to take Saby and his parents up to Vengurla for Indian Rupees Three Hundred Only, it was a big amount during that time. From Calangute Saby’s parents left for Mapusa early in the morning and joined their Indian Hindu agents near the Mapusa Church. From here they walked the whole evening and whole night crossing the mountains and hills about which Saby knew nothing because he was too young to know these routes. While walking and crossing the hilly places, Saby said he was constantly praying to God to prevent any problems on the way. There was danger of wild beats also at night time. But by the grace of God nothing has happened though in similar case many of the Goans while going to Bombay in this way were devoured by the wild beasts and killed by the Indian criminals. Because of this “Vatt Bondi”introduced by Nehru’s Government, Goans have suffered a lot. Next morning at dawn they reached Vengurla and from here they boarded the Ship Santo Antonio and went to Bombay.

While in Bombay Saby was put to School at Anthony D’Silva, Dadar from where he was later on shifted to St. Michael Night School at Mahim. During day time he started apprenticeship to earn some money. It was here as a young boy and a great lover of Tiatro and a great fan of Tiatrists of yesteryears that he came in contact with great tiatrists of those days, namely C. Alvares, Souzalin, Saby Coutinho, Titta Pretto, Prem Kumar and others. While in close contact with them, he started serving them by way of selling their tickets, distributing their handbills and even preparing their posters. Like this he gained name and fame for him in tiatrist circle. All he was doing only for the love of Tiatros and tiatrists and not for money, He never asked money for this type of work he did.

He came to Kuwait in 1993 and immediately joined Bavaria company in Parts department and later on joined Al Mailem Tyres from where end of last month he was retired. Though he has great wish to prolong his stay in Kuwait but things are not in his hands. He mentioned his wish to many people to help him to prolong his stay but nothing is working in his favour.

In Kuwait he was introduced to Kuwait Tiatro Circle by Hilton Pinto from Assolna. Hilton is also a great lover and promoter of Tiatro. Most of the Tiatro organizers and directors made use of Saby’s services in Kuwait to distribute their handbills near the Church not only in Kuwait City but also in Ahmadi and on soccer grounds too. His services were abundantly used by most of the tiatrists especially the visiting ones to sell their Konkani Albums in the form of Cassettes, CD’s and DVD’s in the Tiatro halls. All these he did only for the love of Tiatro promotion and also for the love of tiatrists. Saby’s face is very much familiar in the tiatro halls and in tiatro circle. In his going very many Kuwait based and visiting tiatrists will miss his services and helping hand. It will be very difficult to get another Saby for the promotion of our Tiatros in Kuwait. Such Goans do not come again and again. They surface once in one’s lifetime because they don’t adore money. Those who promote Konkani cause thru the promotion of Tiatro without any monetary benefits are the real lovers of Konkani. We will miss Saby very much in Kuwait and when I say we, I also include myself in it.

I wish Saby all the best in Goa where he will settle down. Hilton Pinto according to my information has already arranged a job for him in Colva May God Bless You Saby and Thank you for helping us in the promotion of Konkani thru the medium of Tiatro in Kuwait.
