The rise of Santos United
Newly formed Santos United, Kuwait created ripples among the Indian expatriates in the Middle East by reaching the finals of the first ever overseas football tournament they participated. Santos ended up Runners-up to Vanxim Divar, Dubai in the Intra Gulf Cup Football tournament organized by GWA at Al-Ahli Stadium, Doha - Qatar in November 2008 losing the finals in a tie-breaker (4-3) .
Vaxim Divar scored through Orlando Viegas, Adler D'Cruz, Collin D'Cruz and Dino Dias while Santos United were successful in finding the mark through Tiago Fernandes, Godwin Fernandes and Jimmy Gouveia.
12 teams from across the Gulf participated in the tournament which saw seven former India internationals also taking part. The star footballers were Bruno Coutinho (Arjuna Awardee), Camilo Gonsalves, Lawrence Gomes, Savio Maderia, Franky Barreto, Chandrakant Naik and Flaviano Leitao.
Under the leadership of Carmo Santos, President of the club, Santos United continue to do well on the football field especially in the Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) league where they have beaten Kerala Challengers and _____ in their last 2 encounters.
