Breast Cancer Awareness Program

Kuwait: October is the month for Breast Cancer Awareness. This is an initiative which began in October 1985 by major charities of the world to promote early detection of breast cancer. Delay in seeking medical attention can considerably reduce the chances of survival.

Indian Women's Association (IWA) is deeply concerned and are initiating a campaign aimed at educating and creating awareness about early detection of this deadly disease.

IWA and Indian Doctors forum, IDF (affiliated to KMA) has organized a team of experts to create an awareness program throughout the month of October, at a time and place convenient to the public.

In this program, members of the community in major schools, colleges, and institutions will be informed and instructed about the importance of early recognition of breast cancer, focusing on technique of self examination and regular mammography.

We are appealing to everyone to join hands with us in fighting this deadly disease.

Kuwait Indian Football New Season Updates

Kuwait Indian Football New Season Updates

Kuwait: The Extra-Ordinary General meeting of the Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) with the football teams' representatives held on 28th September 2009 at Village Inn, Kuwait City, was very chaotic with some times threatening to withdraw their teams from the KIFF fold and participation.  It was a near failure to redress the important issues placed before KIFF relating to the smooth organizing of football tournaments, ground selection and referees.

"The start of the season which was scheduled to start on 2nd October 2009 has now been further delayed as KIFF could not get qualified referees to carry on as well as a 'ground' ," remarked a team's representative who attended the meeting.

It is to be also pointed out that the 'dictorial' ban on players - who are qualified members of an independent refereeing body [IFRA and whose contribution to football in Kuwait is well recognised and documented] -  refusing to officiate 'as KIFF referees' was REMOVED courtesy to the efforts of some Goan clubs.   This 'unjustified ban' was dictated by some members (some past-presidents of the Federation] and who often shuffle themselves from one team one year and next migrate to another team as representatives, just to show themselves attending meetings and be seen on press cuttings, with no worthwhile contribution.

The so-called stalwarts [and often self-glorified] founder members of KIFF were shown the 'door' by the younger members at the house!   This actually happened at the meeting and is now jokingly 'considered' one of the major highlights of the evening when one of the 'KIFF constitution interpreter' had to walk away from the meeting as his biased views and arrogant attitude was not tolerated  by the members present.

"Efforts to bring down the new KIFF managing committee is only because of destructive thinking and personal egos, but we will never be a part of such minds," countered a Goan member of KIFF committee.

When asked about the rumours circulating on the Net, "KIFF is not dissolved and will not be dissolved at any time as all the football teams, players/members and organizers are passionate about the game...... but attitude and egos of 'seniors' have to be shelved," remarked another football fanatic.

"We will compromise to reach at an amicable solution", as past KIFF president who served for a few terms was overheard as saying.

It is also noted that a particular KIFF member had the audicity to welcome one particular club representative to join in to be the KIFF nominated 'referees administrator' to find a solution, when the same group exactly a year ago ensured that no newcomers can 'contest' general elections and KIFF president post and again passed on a 'resolution' contravening the KIFF constitution.  This was pointed out by the two-year old club rep.  which created a humourous situation for all.  When questioned about the strength of suggested 'referees', KIFF could mutter just a 2-3 names, for which the team representatives expressed their displeasure.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, one should not forget Newton's Law, a long time Indian watching football from the Al-Sour Ground days lamented.

In the meantime, there will be a 8-a-side one day football tournament on Friday, 2nd October 2009, with Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA) officiating at the Digital Grounds, Kuwait City, as per information received by www.goa-world.com last evening.

It's high time KIFF recognises the fact that the spring time is the best to play 'football' in Kuwait rather than making the players sweat it out in 45 Degree heat.  It is also to be observed that tournament matches are not played on important religious days of significance - as per the moods and fancies.  And most importantly adhere to the KIFF constitution!

I.F.R.A, K.I.F.F and the memory of late J.P.D'Mello

The Indian Football Referees Association (I.F.R.A.) has been one organization which has given an immense goodwill to Indian football in Kuwait. Since 1980, the association has trained and recruited new referees as its members and provided services for football matches. The late J.P. D'Mello, Founder President of the Association was the one instrumental in forming the current Kuwait Indian Football Federation (K.I.F.F) and its constitution. His memory has been justly kept alive by KIFF through its affiliated Indian football teams/clubs/associations by naming the KIFF League after him.  May his soul rest in peace.

The Kuwait Indian Football Federation (K.I.F.F) established in 1983 controls all Indian expatriate football activities in Kuwait. In the recently concluded season, a total of 18 teams were registered with the federation with over 400 players displaying their skills every Friday morning. Apart from the League, 4 regular tournaments and 5 Seven-a-side tournaments are held under KIFF every season. The KIFF celebrated 25 glorious years of its existence recently.  For over 30 years, Indian clubs and associations have strived to ensure development of individual players while teaching the importance of team effort, fair competition, discipline and good sportsmanship.

Players, officials, clubs may come and go. But Indian football, for sure, will remain a Winner in Kuwait for a long time, so also the Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA) - for the love of the game..

REMEMBERING DR. FRANCISCO LUIS GOMES.

30TH September will go down in the history of Goans as one of the darkest days since on this date in 1869 a great son of Goa hailing from Navelim breathed his last while sailing from Portugal to Goa. He was none other than the great Goan Parliamentarian Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes. Physically a frail in body but intellectually a mighty personality, Dr. Gomes was just a genius. He went to Lisbon to attend the Parliament session as a representative of Goa. People in Goa were making preparation to welcome him back at home when suddenly news flashed saying Dr. Gomes is no more in this world as he expired on board the ship shortly after his ship left the port of Lisbon. It was a saddest day among Goans because such a genius Goa has never produced and unlikely to produce again.

When his ship decked at Bombay, people lined up in big number to welcome Dr. Gomes knowing not that he already died on his way to Bombay and his body was already consigned to the high seas. Incidentally, when the same ship in which he was travelling back home reached Porbandar in Gujarat, on 2nd October 1869, another Indian genius was born in Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi. Though both travelled in Europe, Dr. Gomes more exhaustively than Gandhiji yet our Goan brother Dr. Gomes propounded the cause of India and Goa in particular more than Gandhiji and that too much before Gandhiji was born. Gandhiji learnt more from Dr. Gomes. When Dr. Gomes was asked where did he come from? Dr. Gomes replied saying “I come from a country that gave to the world great epics in Ramayana and Mahabharata and game of Chess”. He was proud to be an Indian and a Goan in particular. Dr. Gomes was born on 31st May on the same date when Abbe Faria another Candolim born Goan genius was born.

In Portuguese Parliament Dr. Gomes fought against the cruel taxes imposed on Goans namely Marriage Tax and Toddy Tappers Tax. Though he was a bachelor yet he demanded in Lisbon Parliament in strong words the removal of Marriage Tax. Regarding Toddy Tappers Tax, since it was subjected only to a certain class of poor Goans, the Government of Portugal and Goa gave less heed to it since poor class of Goans’ voice was less audible. But as a supporter of poor class of Goans and justice for them, Dr. Gomes made a point to raise this issue directly in the Portuguese Parliament.

As a matter of interest, a century back approximately, this Toddy Tappers Tax was a big botheration for Goan Toddy Tappers. Even during my younger days I saw Portuguese Government of Goa how the Coconut Trees used to mark with white paint for tax purposes. Toddy Tappers all over Goa showed their resentment for this cruel tax and when Government failed to listen to their grievances, Toddy Tappers from Agacaim stopped extracting Toddy as a mark of protest. When this happened, Goa Government alerted its machinery to put a halt to this protest coming from Agacaim Toddy Tappers. During those days, people from Agacaim were considered as a bit militant. In fact even today they are very daring and challenging. During the agitation of Konkani movement in Goa they fought very gallantly and produced 6 Martyrs in their sons. Even I noticed their challenging factor when I personally participated with them in Morchas, Rallies and Meetings at Panjim during Konkani agitation.

Regarding their protest at Agacaim of boycotting Toddy Tapping, everyone agreed except one Toddy Tapper who by flirting with Government officials and defying his other striking colleagues started Toddy Tapping. One fine evening, when he was on top of the Coconut Tree, one of the protesting Toddy Tappers with a Double Barrel Gun fired at him on top of the coconut tree killing him instantly. Then all the Toddy Tappers from Agacaim were taken to Panjim Police Station for questioning where all remained firm without disclosing the name of the person who fired those deadly gun shots. This incident was recorded in the song which was rendered in Candolim soon after this tragic incident. One verse and one chorus of that song go like this:

JANERACHEA PIRMERAK DHORUN VELET RENDRANK
ANI PONJE VORON PIREZ KELET KHUIM TEAM AGXIKARANK,
HE BAXEN VINCHAR KELO TANCHE LAGUIM SERKARAN
KI HI BUDH KONNE DILEA TI SANGAT MUNNON JURAMENTAN

Ch.

AGXIKARANI SANGLEM AMI AZIR MUNN MORNANK
PUNNI ZAMNNO KEDINCH GALCHENAUM MADDANK
AGXI EKLEAN MADD DOVORLOLET TAKA JITOCH MARLO FARAN
TACHO DEMAN CHOLTA ATAM PONJE SERKARAN.

Coming back to Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes, he also fought against the death tax from Portuguese Parliament. He was a very successful Parliamentarian of which type Goa will never produce again. Besides Parliamentarian, he was a human rights activist, economist, orator, writer, doctor, philosopher and a thinker. A very versatile genius.

May his soul rest in peace.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.
