SUB: ATROCIOUS ATTACKS ON THE CHRISTIAN MINORITY
India wakes up every day to the news that Radical Hindu Extremists areattacking peace loving Christian minority based in India with thepretext that they are forcibly converting them to Christianity. Even of the attack on a Swami Despite knowing that it was a maoist groupthat claimed responsibility. One cant term this just as attacks orprotests but one of the worst pathetic invasion against the practicesof the Christian faith. Hurting scenes were seen across all majorNewspapers and I would like to also point at how late the TV mediacovered the subjects. In what is termed as the worst one could everimagine the Extremists Hindus commit; Churches were burnt, ChristianPlay schools, Schools and Colleges were destroyed Priests and Nuns publicly desecrated in ways one could never imagine, the Holy figuresand Images of the Savior Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary and the number of Saints that the Christian Faithful honour were seen strewn across thefloor, the Crucifix and Idols disfigured. On top of that many of the faithful were beaten up, burnt brutally and tortured at places evenforcing the people to flee for the jungles or to relief camps. Somewere even made to convert to Hindus.
What is the meaning of all this?Isn't this supposed to be India, the country where our FreedomStruggle took place where numerous Indians gave their life up for thesake of a better India. Indian constitution have gifted the 'INDIANS'rights. The rights that would deliver India into better citizens wherea citizen could choose to make decision favourable according to him orher without any external force. I have seen many Christians convert to Hindus and Muslims, so would that mean that the affected should go and destroy India and its constitution? I say India because this countryis made up of all religion, languages and people irrespective of casteor creed. Retaliation took place in such a way that a lot of peoplewere killed, harmed even to the extent of poisoning water at reliefcamps, attacking a pregnant woman, police brutality. No this is not right, no one has the right to harm, attack or murder another. This isthe basics of all Religion whatever it may be.
The types of attacks on the Christian faith were so brutal that many TV news channels could not even air it due to very graphical scenes.Remember people that it was those very nuns that helped India during times of hardships specially famines, plagues and other medicalcatastrophes. These missionaries have started schools dedicated tosaints so as to educate the few that cannot afford it in India. Children of different faith were always treated equally in suchschools. Peace and Equality were the mottos practiced in theseorganizations. So many hospitals, clinics, medical camps, blooddonation drives, and awareness were spread by them so as to rescuethose that needed it the most. When there are floods, famines andnational calamities; various Sisters and Nuns were always there totend to the needy. There was even news that in the recent flooding in Bihar and Orissa many Christian Organizations helped those that needed serious medical attention and also medical relief and food supplies. It would be great if there were the other organizations to help out inthese matters, but instead of supporting the cause they attack the few that sacrifice their services for others. Indeed this is not the India that our past leaders would want to see. This type of communalism is not needed at this stage. And in case the government has not noticed Christians in the country are suffering and they are made to think that Article 355 or 356 will help them.
Lives are gone unnecessarily and still more are in hiding, there is a lot more that is needed to bedone if this is to be prevented in the future. What are the states of Orissa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and many others going to do about the destruction and loss caused to the Christian Faith? India still has a long way to go from a developing nation. People are suffering because of diseases, poverty, starvation, lack of housing and are indesperate need of such resources. We should change our focus toeradicate these things and not add further sufferings and pain byadding fuel to fire in such communal atrocities that will only shame India further.

Reply to "Devine Punishment for Christian Haters".
Its a article to be pondered on Mr Veronica, indeed its like rose water for those who are blinded with sore eyes. Prayer is the call as of this time more so that we can avoid such type of communalism and also for the many innocent people of Orissa who are undergoing turmoil for the few that cast these type of calamities on themselves.

DEVINE PUNISHMENT FOR CHRISTIAN HATERS.
It is indeed hurting to know that Christians in India are still harassed. India externally looked very tolerant country but internally and actually it is not. Indian Hindus by nature should be tolerant but in reality they are not, at least many of them. Though small percentage of the Hindus are creating terror in India for the peace loving Christian community yet the overwhelming majority are not vocal in their condemnation of their Hindu brothers who are turned barbarians. By turning barbarians they give very bad image of their community and Hindusim as a whole. The overwhelming majority of Hindus who are silent on this subject should have in unison marched towards all the places where Christians are persecuted and given protection to them, thus creating a very good image of Hinduism as a whole. The situation is such now in India, the minorities are living in fear. Who will eradicate this fear?
Though Mahatma Gandhi was afraid that Hinduism may get liquidated from its birth place and asked his Hindu brothers to make all out efforts to protect it from liquidation from this planet yet he never told his Hindu brothers to liquidate other communities in order to protect Hinduism. In one of his statements he said “If Christianity and Islam are uprooted from India, they will still flourish elsewhere but if Hinduism is uprooted from India, it will disappear from this planet”. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto the former premier of Pakistan, quoting this statement of Ghandiji, mockingly laughed at Ghandiji by saying “and yet, we call him Mahatma”.
During his involvement in freedom movement, Ghandiji was very much shocked to see so many Harijans in Orissa were burnt alive by the Brahmins. Soon after this gruesome incident, Orissa experienced terrible flood in which so many people died including many Brahmins. Immediately Ghandiji issued a statement saying “This is the devine punishment for killing innocent Harijans”. Nature takes its own course but surely. We cannot upset natural laws. By killing, torturing, harassing and disgracing Christians in Orissa by the Hindu fanatics they took residence law into their own hands by upsetting the natural law which forbids unnatural actions. Harassing and torturing Christians is an unnatural action for this reason nature took control of Orissa and punished it with flood where thousands and thousands are marooned and harassed not by Christians but by the fury of nature. If Gandhiji was alive now, he would issue a statement saying “the current flood situation in Orissa is a devine punishment for Orissa for killing, harassing and torturing Christians”. Nature does not leave anyone unpunished for his bad actions.
While the situation is very panicky for Christians in India especially in Orissa and other places in the northern belt and Karnataka especially in Mangalore, the authorities in India do not seem to be taking care of the situation. Indian leadership looked still in dormant state neglecting the security of the Christians. Those Hindus who are after the blood of Christians with false allegations of conversion are turned into wild animals. Human attributes are gone from their hearts and minds. There is nobody amongst them to silence them because almost every Hindu is become a silent spectator in their midst and also outside. Christians cannot be retaliatory because ultimately Hindus will win by sheer of their brute majority backed by the immoral and illegal support they get from the authorities concerned who are equally communal.
Now the time is come for Christians especially living in the Western World to demonstrate their feelings to the United Nations and to World Human Rights Organisation. They got access to these world organizations by being in the West. The world is dominated by Christians. Chriatians from Indian origin settled in the West must raise their voice very forcefully in the countries of their domicile. In Canada they have already shown some signs of their disapproval. If possible, they must meet some of the world leaders to put pressure on Indian leadership to act appropriately against Hindu fanatics who are the real terrorists. The cruelty of these terrorists is more severe and painful than the cruelty of Muslim terrorists who bombs Indian cities.
What Christians have done for India inspite of being a miniscule in their number, no other community did. If India is come to this high level today, it is, in the words of former president of India, Dr. Radakrishnan, partly because of the tremendous contribution of Christians and their missionary work in the fields of education, health, social work etc”. It is a pity that even those who enjoyed the benefits of Christian largesse are become mum now. “Ingratitude is your hallmark my friends”. Where are all those great Hindus who enjoyed the benefits of Christian Schools, Colleges, Christian Health Care, Christian Social Work, Christian Welfare and Chrisatian Discipline gone now? Why they cannot openly and loudly raise their voices against their brute Hindu brothers? Are they taking pleasure silently over the massacre of Christians and desecration of their holy places? Why they are not fighting for justice? And where are my Muslim brothers gone now? Why are they silent? When Babri Masjid was demolished, I as a Christian was the first person in Kuwait, thru Kuwait Times to condemn this unwarranted act of Hindu fanatics. When Prophet Mohammed was once asked “when there will be justice in this world?” came the reply within a split of a second saying “When everyone of us will gather courage to fight against the injustice committed on to others as if that injustice is committed on to us only, then only there will be justice in this word”.
India has created gigantic Christian figures, they are now in India and outside too. They have done yeomen services for the benefit of India and Indians irrespective of their creed. They must come out openly and loudly against this harassment of Christians in India. India is in dire need of evangelization and not conversion. To silence the harshness in human behaviour especially in religious fanatics only evangelization is the need of the hour. At this hour the message of Christ is very essential and that message is of love, peace, brotherhood and not of conversion. Christians are not forcibly converting poor, tribals and low castes. Forcible conversion is against Christianity and as such it is not a conversion. The Christians are only converting the grades of the people from low to medium and high so that Indian citizens are become fit to be equal on par with any top person. Hinduism is based on social barriers which is against the principle of Christinaity. Hinduism makes some Hindus as sub-human beings which is against God’s principle because God created human beings as equals. In the eyes of God there is no discrimination as it is in Hinduism. By eradicating caste barriers Christianity is giving equality to the lowest born in Hindu religion. Why Christian missionaries only, even Dr. Ambedkar did this when he revolted against his own Hinduism and converted into Buddhism along with millions of his low caste Hindus. His anger against non-egaliterian and suppressive system of Hinduism was such that once he said “if any conflict arises between my community of low caste and Bharat, I will turn my back to my Bharat and support the interest of my community” of Dhalits. To purify Hinduism from its discriminatory system and to change Hindu fanatics into genuine human beings, India needs evangelization, Ghandijism, Budhism and Ambedkarism .

Dear Veronica.
What a wonderful way of paying a fitting tribute to our legendary tiatrist Remie J. Colaco on the occasion of his 83rd birthday. Your write up was a master piece and full of knowledge. You are like an encyclopedia of Goan Tiatr, Tiatrists and their life. Your knowledge is so immense and I don’t think there is any one who has so much of matter on these subjects. Your memory to remember Remmie’s songs is excellent.
Congratulation to you on this lovely article written beautifully in beautiful Konkani and we look forward to read more of these.

OBITUARY - REGINALD VAZ (GOA/KUWAIT)
Died in Goa on 21 September 2008
Funeral is scheduled at Raia Church, Goa on 24th Sept at 4 pm.
With profound grief we express our heart felt sympathies to the family of deceased.
From:
Shahu to perform on Saxophone at Nite O'Roses
Kuwait: Goan pop music has undergone a metamorphosis ever since its inception during the Portuguese era. Today, Western music has become engrained into the fabric of Goan culture. This ‘foreign’ assault has resulted in the birth of a new creation of ultra-modern, dance-friendly 'remixes' with the Gen-X hypnotized to its beats.
Contrary to the fast-paced music, Kuwait’s ace musician Shahu (Francis) Almeida will provide some symphonic tracks at the NITE O’ROSES on 2nd October 2008 at Crowne Plaza, taking on the saxophone - an instrument forgotten by modern musicians.
Shahu will perform with his band 2..S#arp. The Nite O’Roses organized by Navelim Youth Centre under the leadership of President Agnello A.S. Fernandes has New Delhi’s famed BLACKSLADES as the main band in attendance.
In recent years, a wide range of skilled ensembles have helped raise the profile of Goan music both nationally and internationally.
Amongst the contemporary big names of musicians, the name of Francis Almeida, popularly known as Shahu hailing from Macasana - Goa, shines amongst the stellar bracket of Goa’s top-notch musicians with his indispensable contribution towards the art.
Shahu may be recognized more in the genre of dramas. But behind his simplicity, is the unmistakable halo of his talent as a star musician of Goan bands. With his past penchant and passion for innovative, brilliant music, Shahu has teamed up with Clevie Fernandes – a young Goan crooner from Bombay (born in Kuwait), to continue on what he loves to do best – hypnotize his listeners to a magical sway.
Clevie, whose parental home is in Raia - Goa, has been a fan of Shahu right from childhood days. He was a member of Funky Heads, the famous event organizers in Goa where he was involved in hosting mega programs like Channel ‘V’ Live, Bacardi Blast annuals, Radio Mirch, etc.
“Playing dance and party music is much simpler for me,” reveals Shahu, “Unlike in dramas where I have to play complex tunes, playing pop and party music demands minimum of efforts because I know what exactly I am going to play. Ofcourse we practice a lot and we are armed with the latest tracks of rock, pop, reggae, rhetro-pop and remixes of Hindi and Goan medleys.”
As noticed live, 2..SHARP’s music spans a broad range of harmonies, from Goan and foreign-inspired music to more modern trends with mixtures of genres and ethnic elements. 2..SHARP have already done a number of shows. They have played alongside Goa’s topmost band Forefront and other local bands.
Few however know that Shahu, a dynamic talent with his keyboard, began his tryst with music drumming his way into the hearts of his school-mates at his school’s Annual Gatherings, propelling him into the musical horizon forever. He is the alumnus of St. Francis Xavier H. School Macazana and Guardian Angel College, Sanvordem.
Evolving into an ace drummer, he had the rare and splendid opportunity of honing his musical skills under the baton of Chris Perry, the eternal icon and consummate genius of Goan music and playing alongside his son Errol Perry. With music flowing in his veins, his drum beats reverberated in many well-known Goan bands of the nineties such as ‘Ultimate’, ‘Magic Touch’, ‘The News’, ‘Human Status’, ‘Black Lace’, etc, to name a few. Shahu disclosed that he played in over 1000 weddings as a drummer with these groups.
But it was his evolution into a keyboardist that shot him into instant fame. Interestingly, Shahu switched over to the keyboards not on his own volition but at the suggestion of Fr. Livio D’Mello under whose cudgel he played for the choir at St. Francis Xavier’s church, Macasana. From then on there was no looking back.
Shahu has indeed come a long way with his association with music spanning over a decade. His musical creativity was elevated further after his arrival in Kuwait in October 1999. He began with a bang in Kuwait-based director Jose Rod’s unmatched broadway hit ‘Tujem Nanv Vhodd zaum’ which was staged all over the Middle East and back home in Goa.
Shahu has also played in Muscat, Doha, Bahrain, Bangalore, Darjeeling, etc, and performed for top directors such as Prem Kumar, Roseferns, Jacob, Menino de Bandar, Pascoal Rodrigues, C.D. Silva, John D’ Silva, Ben Evangelist, Rosario Rodrigues, etc, apart from all the directors in Kuwait. He also did a short musical stint playing live music at Dubai’s famous Viva Goa restaurant.
Speaking on his experience and performance Shahu said, “I used to enjoy playing at the Rock Greenal annual musical show at Curtorim.”
Shahu says his most challenging one-man performance was in Mini Mario’s ‘Kiteak Ho Bazar Cholta?’ staged in Kuwait in April 2007. “I had to pick-up the notes on the troupe’s arrival on the morning of the show and I can proudly say that I played to perfection without proper rehearsals,” Says Shahu, further adding, “with musical notes handy, I can play non stop music for over 8 hours.
Shahu can be aptly described as a consummate artist with an alluring passion and drive for music. Undoubtedly his heart thumps ‘musical’ beats, for when it comes to music he is simply indefatigable, endowed with an amazing genius -- coupled with a prodigious memory for music.
Shahu reached the highpoint of his career when he was roped in as a music composer by the doyen of Konkani stage, the legendary Rosario Rodrigues wherein his captivating rhythm set aflame many of the unforgettable hits like ‘Hanv Kallukant Sandlim’ where Shahu pioneered the unique ‘one man band’ concept providing the entire spectrum of music on a single keyboard! Under the ace director’s able tutelage Shahu had a free rein toying with refreshing, innovative ideas which enabled him to break new grounds by pushing hard the frontiers of Goan music.
With sky being the limit, Shahu went on to produce innumerable chart busting scores for numerous hit dramas and musicals which gained him popularity of a household name.
Music apart, Shahu is an intensely endearing and an adorable human being who attaches great value to friendships and family ties. Blessed with a wonderful wife and a cherubic son named Aerosmith, and a daughter born in August this year, Shahu is a devoted husband, a doting father and a dutiful son.
Sensitive and devout to the core, Shahu faithfully plays for the Holy Family Cathedral Church choir (Kuwait) for the 8.00 a.m mass every Friday since 1999. Time and experience have greatly enriched his remarkable musical abilities and today Shahu continues to add increasing complexity and refinement to his astounding gift of music which is sure to hold the audience in a thrall for years to come!

Xavier Fernandes - North Goa's famous compere to host NITE O'ROSES

"Good evening ladies and gentleman..!"
The words are quite synonymous at the start of every party and program. And the person who draws full attention of everyone is the host and centre of attraction -- the MC.
Traditionally, an MC uses rhyming verses, whether pre-written or freestyled, to introduce everyone and praise the bands, organizers, etc, he works with, and hype up the crowd.
Kuwait Indians will have an opportunity to see and hear the unique glib of international fame Master of Ceremonies and Event Manager Xavier Fernandes at the NITE O'ROSES being organized by Navelim Youth Centre on Thursday 2nd Oct 2008 at Crowne Plaza starting 8pm onwards.
Hailing from Candolim, Bardez - Goa, Xavier has hosted numerous product launches, conferences weddings, parties, etc, since 1983.
The Master Compere is best seen shining at Christmas and New Year Eve shows in Goa, Valentine Nite shows, other Dine & Dances, Beat shows, Fêtes, Theme Nites for Hotels & Clubs, and even local festival shows like Sao Joao, Sangodd, etc .
Xavier is also actively involved in educational institutions, social, cultural & pastoral activities.

Arguing about Arguing: Go(a)ne Cases
If you accuse someone of accusing someone what exactly are you doing?
For what it's worth, this question sprang to my mind on examining many Goan forums in recent months, primarily the Goanet, www.goa-world.com/ Gulf-Goans Newsletters, http://penpricks.blogspot.com/ (an anonymous blog critiquing the Goan media) and http://goa-kranti.blogspot.com/
Sometime back, a close friend of mine pointed out to me that I did something wrong in one of my articles. Disgruntled, I objected: “I can’t believe you are blaming me!”
I could respond back with fiery recriminations. But if I am blaming someone for blaming someone I might as well blame myself of blaming someone for blaming someone. And so on..
As we read editorials, articles about governments, organizations and individuals that are intolerant of any opposition, when we read about anything written by ‘ordinary’ and ‘unknown’ individuals, when we hear of caste or religious intolerance, or worse, we should learn to be good and brave: We must tolerate intolerance. That’s the way we are taught. Be not intolerant of intolerance.
In most Goan cases, it is observed that an accusation can give birth to itself in the following (non)sense:
An arbitrary statement by person ‘A’ is heard by person ‘B’ as an accusation (person ‘A’ doesn’t intend to accuse anyone and nobody knows why person ‘B’ might hear an accusation in a statement which he heard as a joke 99 times before. Well, maybe he did not have a good breakfast that day. Nobody knows even if person ‘B’ really heard an accusation but to person ‘A’ it seems as if..)
Person ‘B’ now makes an illogical statement maybe slightly unnerved or maybe just neutral but to person ‘A’ it sounds unnerved (in fact, person ‘B’ does not intend to accuse anyone. But it might as well just happen to him that he sounds a bit accusing, though he wouldn’t like it). Now, obviously, person ‘A’ does hear an accusation. And ta-taa: the accusation is everywhere though it was not there before, not really, because no one wanted to accuse anyone. But somehow everyone felt accused.
Useful Debates or Personal Attacks?
Debate is an essential part of our culture. Mostly, members of opposing communities/profession always wish to have their viewpoints included on the net. But many contributors often do not agree on the content of others. Many have the tendency to accuse others or each other. This often leads to ‘personal’ attacks leaving aside the subject of discussion. And around and around the argument goes, irony abounds, and everyone is now only arguing about arguing.
As a matter of polite and effective discourse, articles/comments should not be personalized but directed at ‘content’ and ‘actions’ rather than people. Posting personal attacks or defamation without verifying the factual truth is harmful to the community and to the publishers’ relationship with it. Attacking, harassing, or violating the privacy of any person should not be permitted. Such attacks can be regarded as aggravating factors by administrators.
..How about just talking with the persons rather than allowing it to get to the stage of an "argument?" Well, some people, as popular Goan writer Veronica Fernandes often puts it in his articles, don’t have marbles to question or call upon a person and discuss things directly.
Usually, people who get loud and continue to argue and go on and on are not getting back what they are wanting - like a discussion, or resolution, or attention even. I think it might be more productive to ask what they want from you, or just quietly and patiently let them talk and listen to them, and do not react back in an argumentative voice. It is obvious that these people have a habit of accusing others for their own misfortunes. And so much so, they prove to be buffoons -- writing themselves out of reputation when nobody else can do it.
Epictetus, the Greek philosopher wrote: “To accuse others for one’s own misfortunes is a sign of want of education.”
All of this, of course, accomplishes exactly nothing but to demonstrate the thin skin behind cockroach brain of these individuals and their mouse mindset, and act as a time waster.
Well, some readers may find my points weird, some witty, some ridiculous, and it won’t be long before rivals believing this write-up is being directed towards them, begin speculating the size of my dick.
Well, in our midst, an unfortunate few, hooked on the futile thrill of online debate, devote their lives to its cause. They roam the internet, actively seeking out viewpoints they disagree with, or squat on message blogs and groups, whining, needling, sneering, over-analyzing each new proclamation - joylessly fiddling, like unhappy gorillas doomed to pick lice from one another's fur for all eternity...
Let’s hear out from them on this article..!

Silence is very loud indeed!
The way Christians are being tormented, humiliated and harassed all over India makes one doubt the assurances given in the Constitution. Incidents like these had never happened in the past 52 years of independence,in such an organised manner.Persecution is not new to Christianity and the Christians have well been motivated by their master to maintain their integrity amidst adversity. Posterity and international community will judge the working of democracy in India by the way the minorities are being treated here.
Every religion preaches the message of love and anyone who is truly religious will not stoop to such cowardly criminal attacks. It is high time the Centre acted positively and created a sense of security amongst the Christians. We, as a nation, should rise to the occasion and condemn such acts of violence no matter against whom they are committed.
It is not known why in a country which boasts of tolerance, such acts of terrorism are unleashed. Except pious statements issued from time to time both by the State and Central Governments nothing concrete has been done.
Several temples are being built in the U.S. and other parts of the world because Hinduism has much to offer. The people of the West are not feeling threatened or getting upset by the Hindu culture spreading with force. It is sad that Hinduism and India are now being discredited in the world by the unchecked hate campaign in India.
Almost no conversion from the dalits and the tribals to Christianity could have happened if only these Hindutva's negative elements had turned their attention to the still prevalent denial of human rights to these sections and had done something to give them some dignity.
We feel sad that the leaders of the government, religious leaders (of all faiths) and respected Hindu citizens in India and abroad are not calling upon the forces behind, which are also maligning the name of Mahatma Gandhiji, to disist from their hate campaign.
Their silence is very loud indeed.

Your generous and sympathetic call to have a Solidarity Meeting towards the sheer atrocities against our fellow Christian brethren in Orissa for killing the innocent people, priests, nuns and outrageously burning of churches is totally insane. Your profound contribution for healing the cause in togetherness by praying for God in humanity is very much appreciated at this hour.
I the undersigned along with our likeminded members amidst our Nuvem Kuwait Parishioners salute your commendable spiritual values for the organized prayers at VillaGE Inn where all have given their precious time for the love of GOD and where all the attendees silently prayed for the departed souls to let them have the eternal peace in the kingdom of heaven - Amen.
Though Seeing is said believing - But still those who dont see and still believe in the name of god will find the eternal blessing from heaven. Further more, I too wish you an extra good health to carry on the cross of spiritual salvation to formulate the mankind values and human kindness contribution, speciallay to those who have been deprived of their real humanity at work and other values. This you have very much articulately shown when there was a great injustice meted towards some nationalities at this place. Keeping your utmost desire in mind, let us once again pray for the departed souls AND pray to god to grant them eternal rest in peace for ever and ever in the kingdom of heaven - Amen.
May the hearts which are hidden in darkness to utter the distress call may shine upon with your kind of workmanship and contribution. God bless you and all those who took part for the Solidary Meet on 13th instant on your well organized contribution. All the best and may there be peace always in our community level too.
With best regards,
Conceicao Teotonio Gomes.

KUWAIT'S SOLIDARITY WITH PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS
Under the convenorship of A. Veronica Fernandes, a meeting was held at Village Inn in Kuwait City on Saturday 13th of this month at 8.30 p.m. to protest over the atrocities committed on Christians in Orissa, India.
The meeting was attended and addressed by all the Indians only from different places of India. Speaker after speaker namely Fidelis Fernandes, Sham Bondel, Mario Rebello, Carmo Santos, Rosary Ferns, Albino Fernandes and A. Veronica in their speeches showed their concern for the crimes committed on priests, nuns, orphans and other Christians by the Hindu fanatics in Orissa. Special concern was also shown towards the destruction and burning of the Churches and residential places of Christians by the fanatic Hindu mobs under the direction of VHP and other such Hindu fanatic organizations currently spearheading the hate Christians campaign.
Albino Fernandes and his group with Rosary Ferns rendered religious songs during the meeting.
All the speakers in one voice protested over the physical attacks on priests and rapes of nuns who are serving the poor and down trodden inhabitants of Orissa, irrespective of their caste and creed. What the Government of Orissa and Hindus cannot do to alleviate the sufferings of the poor in Orissa, Christian priests, nuns and other missionaries are doing. And in return to treat them so humiliatingly is not only an insult to Hinduism but it is a sin against God.
Those who spoke for the meeting also showed their total dislike for the Government of Orissa in particular and the Government of India in general for showing total apathy towards the persecution of Christians in Orissa. In one voice everyone felt that the World leaders should raise their voices in unison to reprimand India for treating its minority community so badly. World bodies protecting human rights should intervene immediately to put an end to the harassment of Christians in India. Through this harassment to Christians it is once again proved how fragile Indian secularism is.
With my head down in shame as an Indian, I express my feelings of total disgust over the inefficiency of Orissa Government in particular and Central Government in general to check the assault on innocent Christians there. Christians are peace loving people and non violence is the core of Christianity. When St. Peter used his sword to cut one ear of the Jew who came to arrest Jesus, St. Peter was told by Christ these words “Peter, put your Sword back into your bag, because those who fight with swords will die with swords only”. Christian religion does not preach the doctrine of violence and revenge. Christian religion does not preach the doctrine of “Eye for an eye and tooth for tooth”. Eye for an eye and tooth for tooth was the law of Hamurabi the ancient King of ancient Mesopotamia, presently falls in Iraq. Good that Christians are non-retaliatory in nature otherwise there would be blood bath in India if it was any other militant community in place of Christians.
Our Muslims brothers are dubbed as terrorists for clandestinely planting bombs in Delhi and elsewhere. But the greatest terrorists are the Hindu fanatics who destroy, kill and rape innocent Christians openly in front of the law enforcing authorities. It is very much surprising that the top leaders of India woke up slowly much after the initial violence. Christian Sonia Gandhi is cunningly keeping her silence just to please majority Hindu community while top Hindu personalities like Karan Thapar openly condemned this violence and said he is ashamed though never of being a Hindu but for what some Hindus do in Orissa in the name of Hinduism.
Manmohan Singh is half heartedly issuing statement without any force. In him we have a weak premier to check such atrocities on Christians. The leaders of India are protecting the perpetrators of violence against Christians. It is a shame for India to call itself a secular. If Gandhiji was alive now, he would openly declare loudly his condemnation over the events going on in Orissa and would further state that Orissa’s Hindus will receive divine punishment.
About a century back Indian sage Swami Vivekananda went on lecture tour to America. While delivering his lecture there, he said proudly as a representative of India that “India is the most wonderful land of toleration where Indians build temples for Mohamodansa and Christians. We Indians not only believe in universal acceptance but accept all religions as true”. Now let me ask: Are we worthy of this legacy? What we see in India now is total contradiction of what Swami Vivekananda said and yet we call ourselves secular. It is a shame to call India a secular.
While Orissa is burning, according to the latest reports our brothers and sisters in Mangalore are also made to suffer the same type of persecution from the Hindu fanatics. I, on behalf of all my like minded Goan friends and Goan colleagues strongly condemn the violence against our Mangalorean Christian brothers and sisters. At this hour of crisis we support our Mangalorean Christians and vouch to stand by them to face this onslaught carried against them by the Hindu fanatics.
Before the forcible annexation of Goa by Nehru’s Government in December 1961, Portuguese Premier Salazar showed his concern for Goan Christians saying if India annexes Goa by force, then the fate of Christians in Goa will be in peril because Hindus especially the fanatic Hindu influence of India will swallow Goan Christians. Are these words of Salazar prophetic? Looks like from the ongoing events. India currently is ruled by fanatics whose only motto is to turn Indians into communal. The fanatic Hindus do not want to lift the social and other standards of poor. Christian missionaries are doing the right thing for the upliftment of poor in India. Indian Christians are for the upliftment of poor while Hindus especially fanatics are not. Because they are not, they are harassing Indian Christians.
May God protect Indian Christians.

Sir
This is to convey our deep gratitude to the President, members of the Kuwait Konkani Kendra at Kuwait and your kind self for remembering "Pai Tiatrist" on his 61st death anniversary. on 29th July,2008 as per the information received by us.
We are also grateful to the President , members of the Kendra, and your kindself for sharing our concern in maintaining the house of Pai Tiatrist and would welcome any gesture from tiatrists and other well meaning people in supporting our endeavours.
Sir you are aware that the Ravindra Bhavan indoor auditorium at Fatorda has been named "Pai Tiatrist" Joao Agostinho Fernandes indoor Auditorium by the Government of Goa, on 20th July, 2008 and ever since that day several persons have visited our home and encourgaged us to maintain his home and personal effects manuscript for posterity.
The house is in a pitiable state and hence we have requested the Chief Minister of Goa to provide us financial assistance for repairs and maintainence of the same. We look forward to a positive response from him.
Kindly share our sentiments to all and we welcome the members of the Goan communityi worlwide and specially from the Kuwait Konkani Kendra Kuwait to visit our home and support our endeavours. This will be a moral encouragement to us in .
We also convey our thanks to the tiatrists and all those who have made this possible 61 years after his death, as a befitting tribute to his memory.

NOTE FROM: A. VERONICA FERNANDES:
It is my request to all Tiatrists who are staging their Tiatros at Ravindra Bhavan, henceforth while making announcements of their Tiatros, to indicate only the Hall Name as "Pai Tiatrist"
and nothing else. The name "Ravindra Bhavan" is not essential since Pai Tiatrist is the only hall in Margao. People will understand the location when the name Pai Tiatrists is indicated. In this way, the image of Pai Tiatrist and the Tiatro Hall will be bright.
Secondly, after my last article on The House of Pai Tiatrist, I was expecting somebody to initiate a project plan for the renovation of the House of Pai Tiatrist and put it in front of the Government or public and lovers of Tiatro for the necessary action thru proper channel. But, up to now, nothing has been done. Somebody interested should apply his mind on this.

Agnello Fernandes elected President of Navelim
This is the 12th time that Agnello is elected President of the club.
Born in a small scenic village of Aquem-Alto, Navelim, Agnello completed most of his academic career at Guardian Angel School, Sanvordem and later attained a distinction in English Literature, an achievement in itself during those days. Ever since coming to Kuwait, Agnello has worked for some of the top most Investment Houses. At present, he is the Assistant Vice-President (Funds Administration & IT) at Gulf Custody (Investment) Company.
A Silver medalist at the All Kuwait Photography Contest conducted by JVC in 1987, Agnello has used his lens "for personal satisfaction only." A natural humorist at heart, Agnello believes that "life's best things come in small Packages..!" On quieter days he enjoys watching soccer.
The dynamic leader lives with his lovely wife Neeta and children Allan, Allison and Neeta in a closely knit family.
Following members were elected to the Managing Committee for the year 2008-2009 during the Annual General Body Meeting of the club held at Kuwait City, recently:
Agnello A. S. Fernandes - President
Norman Noronha - Vice President
Allan S. Fernandes - Gen. Secretary
Peter Colaco - Treasurer
Eusebio (Seby) Fernandes - Asst. Treasurer
Avelino Dias - Sports Secretary
Saby Colaco - Asst. Sports Secretary
Britto Pereira - Team Manager
Johnny Luis - Asst. Team Manager
Gasper Crasto - Team Coach
Bernard Fernandes - Social Secretary
Simon Dias - PRO
Luis D' Silva - Auditor
Mario (Katty) Carneiro - Advisor
A number of events were chalked out for the season during the AGM apart from Navelim’s annual feast celebration, NYC Trophy Football tournament and other regular socials.
Navelim’s mega event for the season will be the grand NITE O’ROSES dance social to be held on 2nd October 2008 at Crowne Plaza, Farwaniya.
Incidentally, Navelim are the first among the Indian clubs in the Gulf region to have a website of their own. Navelim’s contribution towards the cost of construction of the Rosary College premises as well as the Nazareth Home for the Aged, and support towards the needy back home is commendable and well appreciated by the Goan community. The popular and prestigious NYC Trophy has done 18 successful editions. Indeed it is worth noting that NYC football team has won every competitive trophy at stake for Indian expatriates in Kuwait.
AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Shortly in November the world will witness the election of the strongest President of the strongest nation in the world. The election for American presidency is always seen with keen interest by the entire world. Democrats and Republicans will fight for the supremacy of White House. Obama will fight against Republican Mcain. Who will win? Though the contestants oppose each other yet their goal is same, the supreme interest of USA.
Though Mr. Obama is having as his running mate Mr. Biden yet earlier they expressed their contrasting views on Iraq war. Obama voted for the Iraq war, Biden voted against it. Obama is 47, Biden is 66. Obama has an aura of intellectualism, Biden has the air of casualness etc”.
For a keen reader of politics and having mind of a political scientist, the election of American presidency is something to admire and enjoy. It is very interesting to emulate many of the attributes of American democratic system especially for many of the third world democracies which are still in nascent stage of democracy.
The speeches of the contenders of US presidency and even of their presidents are watched with rapt attention because they are very meaningful and with lot of antitheses. They use in their speeches contrasting statements to reach to the logical conclusion. Said the former president John F. Kennedy during his inaugural speech “In order to save humanity, we must put an end to war otherwise war will put an end to humanity”. What a beautiful statement in the form of antithesis! Then he went a step further and said “Don’t ask your nation what it can do for you but ask yourself what you can do for your nation”. Then he concluded saying "United States of America will be the last nation to impose its war on others but first to defend itself if war is imposde on United States".
Reconciliation in the hour of need is the hallmark of American political system which is ingrained not in their constitution but in the hearts and minds of all the great leaders of America who were not only great administrators but also great thinkers. And only great thinkers having great heart and great mind can become the presidents of America. American presidents are not only ruling USA but they must have the capacity to control the entire world. Yesterday, today and even tomorrow the world will be safer in the hands of USA only. It takes greater responsibility on its shoulders to protect the world otherwise atomic powers like Russia will swallow more of Georgias and monsters like Saddam Hussein will liquidate more of Kuwaits. To stop this trend USA needs highly competent president.
During their election campaign for the presidency in 1992, Bill Clinton and Bush Sr. in their public speeches to impress upon their voters tore each other, Bush Sr. being more vocal and insulting Clinton in a manner as it is done in some third world democracies, especially in India. In one of his fierce and unpalatable hard hitting statements against Clinton, Bush Sr. said “My dog Milley is having better knowledge of foreign affairs than both these bloody idiots (referring to Clinton and his running mate Al Gore). Besides, Bush Sr. used so many unpalatable and unparliamentarily statements to humiliate Bill Clinton but nothing worked against Bill Clinton and Bush finally failed, of course to the satisfaction of Bill Clinton.
However, during his inaugural speech Bill Clinton in the midst of sea of elite gathering, while beginning his speech, said “first of all, let me begin with my profound respect, admiration and thanks for my predecessor – referring to Bush Sr. seated in the privileged row – who has so beautifully served USA during the last half a century”. This compliment to Bush Sr. was something unique which one can see only in USA. If it was in any other third world democracy especially in India the winner would first disgrace the loser by tearing him into pieces to the thunderous applause of the audience. But in Clinton’s eulogy for his predecessor who has done so much of character assassination of Clinton, the antithesis was clear for the audience to applaud.
In the current election campaign for the Democratic Ticket, till a few days back, Hillary Clinton and Obama where opposing each other fiercely pointing out each other’s follies and weaknesses but once Obama got the ticket on behalf of Democrats, everything was forgotten and Hillary embraced Obama and gave a warm hand shake of total support and cooperation. What a wonderful form of antitheses displayed by Hillary Clinton! Not only this, her husband Bill Clinton also joined her in lending total support for Obama a first black African whose other former black social activists including the late Martin Luther King were harshly treated by the earlier democrats. But everything is now forgotten.
I admire American system for giving equal opportunities to every American citizen whether black or white, whether naturalized or descent. They value human being and his qualities though they have a history of treating blacks with disrespect and disdain. This attitude of Americans was so harsh that even in the religious places like Churches apartheid was practiced very rigidly against the teachings of Christ. For this reason, Martin Luther King, in one of his sermons in the State of Montgomery told the whites who by virtue of their white skin were given preferential treatment to occupy the benches placed on the right side while blacks on the left side: “If you cannot integrate with the masses, pointing out to the blacks, you will never integrate with Christ because Christ is come from the masses”. This statement was enough to create anti-apartheid feelings not only in Montgomery but all over USA as well. There was a time in America when if the shadow of a black person falls on the white man, the white man was getting annoyed but very shortly the black man may rule America.
A. Veronica Fernandes,

MARIAN D'SOUZA'S SUPPORT FOR "Pai Tiatrist".

Dear Mr. Veronica Baab,
Thanks for the mail re. the House of Pai Tiatrist. I read the whole article with awe and commend the intention of writing this article for the konkani public to read the contribution to Tiatr by this pioneer. I am aware and have read at regular intervals about the troupes visiting Kuwait from Goa/Bombay to stage Tiatrs in Kuwait. I know Goans as well as Mangaloreans love Tiatrs and fully support this unique feature of our culture. It is a great feeling not only to act and sing but even to sit back and watch others performing on the stage.
In my early years in Kuwait I too, along with other stalwarts of konkani stage, struggled to revive the dyeing art of stage dramas in Kuwait under all sorts of odds and succeeded to some extent. We never made money (it was not our intention). Whatever money we collected from staging the shows, we donated it to some church, school or the aged homes etc. in Mangalore. Many of the artists have gone to their rest, some have retired and gone back to India and only a handful of us still live in Kuwait, of course in obscurity. I, for one, knowing the ultimate result of misery, poverty and resentment walked away from singing and acting obsession and focussed on my career. Today I am glad to say that I am better off in all respects. I thank God for enlightening me to take that decision on right time.
I do help any budding artist who comes to me for help and do whatever I can to support our konkani language and culture (not that I am very rich). Art like, music has a universal appeal to the hearts and minds of the people, no matter to what land, religion, caste or creed they belong to. So, when you said that the house of Pai Tiatrist needs to be maintained, let's us take the first step to do so. As it is said in Latin: "Verba sonant, exempla tonant", let us show by example. You may reach me for my humble contribution towards the rehabilitation of Pai family and their abode.
All these years I have enjoyed the music of singing legends from Goa, when in Bombay and now in Kuwait. Starting from C. Alvares, H. Briton, Lorna, of course, and a host of other singers. Konkani songs have been sung by all legends of Hindi music too, starting from Moh'd Rafi, Hemant Kumar, Shailendra Singh to name a few. Our konkani heritage is very rich in all respects. Lots of people have done and still doing (like you) and Eric Ozario in Mangalore, a lot of unknown people are currently doing great work to further the cause of konkani and our common cultural heritage. Let us not forget those who have done yeoman service to this cause all along, lived a miserable life and passed away with only appreciation letters and plaques hanging on the walls of their homes. If there are such people who are still around and need our support to live a decent life we should do whatever we can before it is too late.
Let your article kindle a small flame in the reader's mind and let it spread to all konkani loving people of the world so that it can be proved that collectively we can achieve anything under the sun.
Kind regards.
Marian.
(Note from Kranti: The writer Mr. Marian I. D'Souza is working for The Bank of Kuwait & the Middle East K.S.C. as a Senior Manager General Audit and a long timer in Kuwait. He is not only an adrent lover of Konkani and Konkani Stage but also once a renowned Mangalorean stage artiste performing in Kuwait. 3 decades back I witnessed him performing in the Church Hall. He acted and performed not for money but for the love of Konkani stage. Recently he was the chief guest for Konkani Kullvar function where while in his speech he also rendered few verses of many of the songs of yesteryear singers. Our admiration goes to him for his love for Konkani stage and willingness to help "Pai Tiatrist" issue).
IN PRAISE OF "PAI TIATRIST".

From Siridao to Swindon
elisabeth_car@yahoo.com
Driving through Swindon, I don't get the impression of a factory town.
It is lush green with swathes of agricultural land, the streets lined with houses not given to prosperity but neither to the grime associated with industrial hubs. I would find out later that simmering behind the façade of tranquility lies the squalid reality of racism, chicken-factory jobs and over-crowded living quarters. For now, I was making my way to Agnelo De Mello's house, wanting to find out what had brought the diaspora Goan soul to Swindon.
Agnelo, ex-president of the Goan Swindon Association, sits in his living room wearing an Islander shirt and wide grin. Musical instruments propped against the wall are a tell-tale sign that music flows freely in his house. He writes rap music and plays in a band.
Much like the Biblical patriarch Abraham, Agnelo says he is the genesis of the growing Goan tribe in Swindon. He moved here from the Gulf some twenty years ago. He knew the then manager of the Rover assembly plant and was instrumental in getting jobs for Goans. From this humble seedling, a mighty tree has grown.
As per the 2001 UK Census, Swindon had a population of 180,061 of which 1.3% were Indian. Senior Catholic priest, Monsignor Twomey estimates the influx of Goans in recent years to be in the region of 8,000. Although this figure is hard to verify, Swindon has become a substantial concentration of Goans in disapora. The Monsignor notes that his largely Irish Catholic parish has now been replaced by Goans.
A large percentage of them are from Siridao, Goa Velha and Agassim.
Portugal affords Goans, right to Portuguese nationality. By virtue of the EU's free movement of labour as per the Treaty of Rome, Goans have access to UK labour markets. I wondered if they had found the fabled pot of gold at the end of the multi-coloured immigration rainbow?
Swindon is an industrial estate, home to companies such as Honda, BMW and Faccenda, one of UK's largest chicken processing plants. It is in factories such as these that Goans find employment. Anyone who has visited a chicken processing unit will vouch that the stench of raw chicken is unbearable and industrial accidents are not unheard off.
The Wiltshire paper reported:
"In March 2002, Faccenda was fined £14,000 by Chippenham Magistrates Court when it pleaded guilty to failing in its duty to protect the health and safety of its staff, after a teenage worker lost two fingers in a chicken-skinning machine."
The same year, Faccenda removed the toilet seats in the men's toilets.
The staff alleged this was to cut short the amount of time spent in the restrooms. Men had to either squat on the toilets or sit on a rim encrusted by faeces and urine. The supervisory mindsets are military-like.
Although Goans pride themselves on their ability to converse in English, in a country like the UK, many find their ability to communicate deficient and, they are averse to re-training. Their lives are condemned to low-skilled jobs.
Life at the bottom of the industrial food-chain, however, is competitive. Amongst native Swindonians, there is a feeling that Asians are taking over their jobs. In 2004, rocks were hurled at a coach carrying Goan workers from Faccenda factory. Later in the year, coaches used to bus ethnic workers were vandalised. Faccenda is set to close as of September 2008. Visiting the blog world, I find that some are applauding the closure of Faccenda, seen as an employer of minorities.
A source alleges that Goans have had to bribe Recruitment agents with laptops and paid vacation trips, to secure employment. I'm reminded of a Mafia-type protection racket. For all this they are paid a pittance.
I called up Storm Recruitment agency, which supplies industrial labour and at one time supplied Faccenda, to find out just how much I would earn if I was willing to stuff chicken-wings into plastic bags.
Between £5.52 and £6.00 per hour, which in the UK barely puts a roof over one's head.
Goans predominantly live in the town center along Manchester Road, Elmina Road and Broad Street. Living conditions are cramped. Sitting rooms have been converted into bedrooms and rented out at £450 per month. It is common for two or even three households to be living in a house meant for a single family and sharing one bathroom under the most unhygienic of conditions. Karen Leakey, an active community leader who is perhaps more vehemently vocal than most about trash and multiple occupancy homes, made this comment in a Swindon newspaper, "We have a large Goan population around here with big families all living in one house - as is their culture", thereby generating large amounts of garbage. Although her point was about the need to improve garbage collection, not all residents of Swindon are sympathetic. One comment was, " maybe it is their culture but it is not ours and if it creates a health issue such overcrowding has to stop."
What then is the motivating factor for Goans to sell their land, their homes, their business, their trawlers and move to Swindon, a place of minimum-wage jobs, kudd-like living quarters, endless rain and bitter cold? The answer came from Veena Nunes.
Veena and her family, migrated to Swindon seven years ago. She works at the Churchfields School, where quite a few Goan students attend.
The transition from Goa to Swindon for these children is not always an easy one, says Veena, but the school provides a supportive atmosphere.
Initially, Goan students would leave the world of academics after finishing their O'levels (10th standard equivalent) and take up jobs, but now she finds many going to university. Some have preformed so well, they are part of the school's "Top Set". Veena tells me, children are encouraged whether their aptitude is in drama, music, art or academics.
As I drive home, I realise the story of new immigrants is as timeless as Swindon's chalk hills. The hopes and aspirations these families have for their children is the propeller that enables them to endure life in all its severity. Goan families who have immigrated to the UK find their children have a pathway to pursue their dreams and opportunities that may not have been so easily available to them back in Goa.
Life does not stand still, it is a continuum. The earliest waves of Goan immigrants into Swindon have already established themselves and are on their way to leading comfortable lives. Swindon's motto is "Salubritas et Industria" (Health and Industry). Certainly, we can wish both for our Goans in Swindon.

THE HOUSE OF "PAI TIATRIST".
Though he was considered as “Pai Tiatrist” yet with all his humility, reverence and due credit, he bowed down his head before Lucasinho Ribeiro from Assagao, Bardez, for scripting and staging the first Konkani Tiatro in Bombay. Though Lucasinho Ribeiro did the beginning yet Joao Agostinho Fernandes from Margao, Modsai, is given the title as Pai Tiatrist because of his excellent work in the promotion of Konkani Tiatro. The area where Pai Tiatrist lived in his humble house was also inhabited by the late Chris Perry on one side and on the other side at "Caminho de Monte" lies the house of the late comedian Anthony Mendes. According to the information, the house of legendary Anthony Mendes has been disposed off for setting up a hospital.
On 29th of last month, Tiatrists in Goa marked the 61st death anniversary of Pai Tiatrist. Kuwait Konknni Kendr also simultaneously in Kuwait City marked this day by calling a meeting of its members. The Goa Government as a fitting tribute to the excellent contribution of Pai Tiatrist in the development of Tiatro, has named the Tiatro Hall at newly built Ravindra Bhavan, Margao after Pai Tiatrist. It was a deserving credit to Pai Tiatrist. For this kind gesture of Goa Government, the major credit should go to the Tiatrists in Goa who so vociferously campaigned for this result. If it was not for their strong campaign, the Goa Government would not have come out with naming of the hall after Joa Agostinho Fernandes. And by naming the hall after Pai Tiatrist, the Goa Government has not done any favour. By acceding to the demands of the Tiatrists, Goa Government has only done its duty otherwise due to the might of the Tiatrists, the Goa Government would face lot of problems. The might and power of Tiatrists have increased tremendously in the recent years. Hence, Digambar Kamat and his Government had to bow down to the wishes of Tiatrists. Well done Goa based Tiatrists.
Now the question of the House of Pai Tiatrist. According to the photos I received, this house is in a very bad shape and needs repairing and renovation. Builders lobby is after it to acquire it and in its place construct a building. According to me this house is an historical house belonging to a person who created a history in Goa. This house should not be allowed to pass it on to others like builders. This house should be preserved for posterity as Heritage House. This house should be kept as a touristic attraction along with all the things Pai Tiatrist used in writing his Tiatros and staging them. It has got historical importance. To preserve this house for posterity, it requires renovation and repairs. To do this job lot of money is required. The residents of this house, namely the daughter-in-law of Pai Tiatrist and her young daughter according to my information are not capable to spend the money to renovate and repair this historical house where history maker lived.
In view of this, the onus to repair this house falls on all the Tiatrists first and next on all the supporters and lovers of Tiatro. Today Tiatrists are making lot of money by acting and staging Tiatros. Yesteryear Tiatrists earned nothing by being Tiatrists and died as paupers. Many of them faced lot of difficulties to sustain during their old age. Some of them died in Asilos. Others because of their poverty had to send their wives to the Gulf to work as house maids who faced lot of miseries in the houses where they worked. In Sinquerim one of the top Goan Tiatrists from Candolim to maintain himself financially had to work as Watchman during the construction of Taj Hotel. In one word, yesteryears Tiatrists developed Konkani Stage beautifully and staged best of Tiatros and rendered best of songs but lived a miserable life because they did not make money out of this business.
Today Tiatro is a big business and Tiatrists are making lot of money. Because it is a big business Tiatrists are demanding status of Industry to Tiatro. Today’s Tiatrists are owning and roaming in their own cars while yesteryears Tiatrists did not have even a Cycle. Today many of the Tiatrists are become Lakpotis which is a very good sign and they should become not only Lakpotis but Crorepotis and should not face the same fate as that of their predecessors. If today Tiatrists are become rich thru Tiatros then they should thank Pai Tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes who made way and created base for them to reach to their current wealthy position. Since this is the case, the Tiatrists in Goa in particular and elsewhere in general are obligated to show their gratitude to Pai Tiatrist by doing something concrete for him and for his family.
This gratitude can be shown in a best way by raising funds for repairing and renovating the old house of Pai Tiatrist. There are about 500 Tiatrists in Goa. If each one of them contributes
Rs. 1000/- which is nothing in the current time, the total amount from their personal pockets will be Rs. 500000/-. Besides, there are over a dozen Tiatro Troupes in Goa. Each troupe must come forward and stage at least one show of their Tiatros in aid of this funds. In this way, huge fund can be collected which can be used not only to renovate the old house of Pai Tiatrist but also to help financially the dependents of Pai Tiatrist. After repairing this house, it can be converted into a Tiatro Academy or Tiatro School, of course by taking due care of the present residents of this house.
No doubt if Government comes to the rescue of this project then well and good but we should not wait for Goa Government. If we wait for Goa Government, then nothing will come because Goa Government is not a reliable Government. Besides, I don’t have much faith in MP Shantaram Naik. He by visiting the house of Pai Tiatrist made a big show of himself for his political gains. These politicians are not interested in anything concerning Romi Konkani and its promoters. From past history politicians and top leaders in the beginning shed crocodile tears and finally forgot the whole issue. If we rely on Government doles, we will reach nowhere and by that time much damage will be done for that historical house. In the words of legendary Tiatrist Kid Boxer, in one of his political songs, "Serkar amcho nidla, to utta mhonnosor Uzvaddtolem".
Hence, it is time now for Tiatrist to come forward, prepare an action plan and move forward accordingly. It is not difficult for them to do this job. They cannot leave the house of their Pai to rot and get liquidated. They cannot neglect the family members of their Pai if they consider and accept Joao Agostinho Fernandes as their Pai. If they consider Joao Agostinho Fernandes as their Pai then they are duty bound to support the house of their Pai and the family members of their Pai. They must know to fulfill their obligation towards their Pai.
A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.
