ETHIOPIA

Kuwait: The 4th Kuwait African International Football Tournament organized by The Lighthouse Church (TLC) continued the league games with last year's runners-up India taking on Ethiopia at the Digital Ground, Sharq, Kuwait City on 30th October 2009.

India are represented in the tournament by 5 time Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) League champions Navelim Youth Centre under the leadership of former India Juniors goalkeeper Avelino Dias.

The teams with large number of enthusiastic supporters sang their respective National Anthems before the kick off.

The game between India and Ethiopia began at a bright pace urged on by the lively spectators. The play was restricted mostly to the midfield during the initial stages as Ethiopia started off slowly looking to get hold of the proceedings. India tried to play a counter attacking game. In the tenth minute India captain Cruzedio Rodrigues, taking full advantage of a defensive lapse by the Ethiopian defenders to win the ball, fed striker Duarte Ferrao with a defence splitting pass who made no mistake to put the ball behind the nets for the first goal (1-0).

Ethiopia put up a spirited fight back and made some excellent moves but the strong Indian defence comprising of deep defenders John Furtado and Alfred Pires gave no room for penetration. India went into the break with the lead.

The swift pace of the match continued after the break with Ethiopia pushing forward at every available opportunity to level the scores. India goalkeeper Anthony was called to action on two such occasions to get the team out of trouble. For the first few moments of the session India were forced to defend in their own half but on the counter attack hit Ethiopia with the second goal. Cruzedio, taking on two defenders slotted home to lead India 2-0.

Later, the game got a bit physical with the Ethiopians flexing their physical superiority. The referee had to caution players from both teams.

India seemed to take much control of the match with their mid-field led by Roland playing an excellent role in the centre. Good understanding and excellent team work between the Indians took India's scoreboard to 3-0 when once again a well measured pass by Cruzedio to his peer Duarte found the net.

India now have 3 points from their match and head the group which consists Thailand and the mighty Egypt along with Ethiopia.

THAILAND

In the second game, Thailand and Egypt showed some wonderful display of soccer but failed to get the initiatives. Egypt made more of the constructive moves and ran the ball up for a major part of the match in their opponent's territory but Thailand goalkeeper Uthen Sangsanang with his quick agility made brilliant saves under the bar.

The game ended goalless.

Mustapha Ceesay and Yusuf Witi were the main officials of the day. They officiated the matches in all fairness and true spirits of the sport.

The League continues on Friday 6th November 2009 with Nepal  facing Sri-Lanka at 2.30pm and strong contenders Ghana taking up on Benin at 3.30pm.

ON " NEED OF DISCIPLINE"

Subject: "NEED OF DISCIPLINE.":

Sports activities where Don Bosco’s participated the entire team would be from the school itself and their discipline & sporting spirit would reflect on the field and this would set as good precedent for other participating teams to cultivate.

But here in Kuwait its poles apart as all Don Bosco players are not from the Bosco’s background, due to the commercial state of affairs down here.

But as you rightly said when they rebel and create a commotion, it reflects on the Image of Don Bosco.

For this the concerned people should inculcate the team members and the officials of the required special code of conduct on & off the field if they would like to associate with the soccer teams. As there a few elements from outside who might bring ill repute to the Image of Don Bosco as its hurts deeply.

NEED OF DISCIPLINE.

Don Bosco was a very holy man. During his lifetime he worked for the betterment of the youth. The name Don Bosco is known all around the globe especially in the matter of imparting education. The schools and educational centers run in the name of Don Bosco are doing great job for the promotion of education and discipline to the students. In Goa and in Mumbai the Don Bosco schools are very much in demand for the qualitative education and discipline it imparts and thus makes the youth better and disciplined members of the society. For example, the Don Bosco Schools at Matunga in Mumbai and at Panjim in Goa are two marvelous schools shining in every field.

The students of Panjim Don Bosco School are admired for their discipline as it was once for students of St. Joseph’s High School Arpora, Bardez, Goa when the great Goan priest Fr. Mendonca was its principal. The students of this school were recognized by their sheer discipline only more than anything else. Arpora School was the best in Goa in every field of the sports and its students were top in every discipline of the sports. Even if any injustice was done to its student rightly or wrongly, its principal Fr. Medonca never disputed the decision of the organizers nor protested but gracefully accepted with the statement “accept the defeat with sporting spirit “. He once said, by protesting and opposing the decision, we as priests are creating rebellious youth who later on will turn out to be rebels thereby endangering the peace in society. The duty of the Catholic and Christian Schools is not to fight, not to rebel and not to bring about splits but to accept the defeat gracefully.

Once I went to Bombay taking my young son to Fr. Mascio at Don Bosco Matunga. Before blessing my son, my wife told Fr. Mascio “Fr., please pray over him because he is doing lot of mischief”. For this Fr. Mascio replied saying “When he was young, Don Bosco was also mischievous”. Don Bosco was mischievous no doubt but surely not rebellious creating disorder in the smooth functioning of the society. Don Bosco never disturbed peace anywhere and never disturbed discipline. Don Bosco never aligned with rebellious people and never helped ‘splittist’ movement. For this reason, students and people involved in the promotion of Don Bosco’s name are known to perform good discipline.

When Don Bosco’s students and people associated with Don Bosco act as rebels, then the image of Don Bosco affects negatively. Those priests and teachers imparting education and discipline in the name of Don Bosco in their institutions must advise their students and soccer teams not to act as rebels which will give much distorted image of Holy name of Don Bosco. It is not enough for priests to preach from the pulpits in the Churches and teach from the platforms in the Schools about morality and education, these priests in line with the tradition of Don Bosco must also tell their students to be obedient even if it is detrimental to their cause. Christianity does not tell us to rebel. Rebellion is against the principle of Christianity.

The holy image of Don Bosco is getting soiled when its students and people promoting sports and soccer in particular are involved in promoting non co-operation instead of cooperation, disunity instead of unity. We at this critical hour need elements supporting unity amongs us in true Christian principle. This also leads to damaging the reputation of Don Bosco’s school. If no corrective steps are taken immediately, disciplined parents will stop sending their children to this school in the future.
