Nigeria beat India to emerge Champions

Kuwait: The Nigeria Eagles of Kuwait beat the warriors India 4-3 in the tie-breaker after a 1-1 draw at full time in the finals of the 4th Kuwait African International Football tournament organized by Sports Outreach under the Lighthouse Church, at Sharq Digital Grounds, on Friday 5th February 2010.

It was a grand finale to the tournament with participating teams in attendance at the ceremonial function to sing their National Anthem.

The 9-aside tournament that started in October 2009 included Kuwait based expatriate national teams from Egypt, Benin, Ethiopia, Yemen, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka, Nepal, Nigeria and India. The teams were drawn into 3 groups for a round robin league with the top two and best two third placed teams playing in quarterfinals.

India took an early lead in the fast paced final off a corner kick taken by Americo Fernandes.  However, the physically strong Nigerians drew level within minutes through a goal by striker Duke.

The rest of the game was a see-saw battle between the sides with Nigeria playing more of the offensive trying to force their way for a winner while India played a measured, swift passing game occasionally attacking from the wings. John Furtado, Godfrey Aguair, Americo, Duarte and captain Cruzedio Rodrigues excelled for India. Indian team was represented by Navelim YC and managed by Mr. Avelino Dias.

On the other side, with the instructions from team coach Niyi Oyewusi Nigeria showed tremendous display of talent and technicality through their midfielders Nasiru Abdulganiy, Azeez Adegbesan, Shamsudeen Munirudeen and Chinasa Nworu also the defenders Tunde Adegbesan, Seun Ososanya and Chuck Chukuyem were up to the occasion while marvelous footballing skills were shown by the attackers Toha Yahaya, Duke and Mikail Adekunle.

Nigeria proved to be better shooters winning by a margin of 4-3 in the tie-breaker. Nigeria's goalkeeper Mohammed was on duty saving one of the penalty kicks in the tie-breaker.

The final was attended by a sufficient number of enthusiastic spectators and football fans. The closing ceremony began with a prayer by Evangelist Tina Okotete, one of the distinguished guests at the event. Pastor Daniel Harstad also had a message of hope for the spectators and players followed by an enlightening inspirational message address by Pastor Allan.  Mr. Sola Owoseni and Mr. Jubril Adekunle, representatives from the Embassy of Nigeria - Kuwait were there to grace the occasion. WELCOME TO CAPUCHINS IN KUWAIT.

Greetings!!

“They came, they preached and touched the hearts of the faithful.”

While conveying our heartiest congratulations to Rev. Fr. Gaspar Fernandes - OFM Cap and Rev. Fr. Andrew Francis - OFM Cap on their installation as Parish priests of Holy Family Cathedral Kuwait City, and Our Lady of Arabia Church Ahmadi respectively on 22nd January 2010, we would like to thank our Bishop, His Lordship Camillo Ballin, mccj for giving to us the faithful in Kuwait, the New Year’s gift of the Capuchin Friars. This is a welcome move and I am confident that the faithful in Kuwait will spiritually benefit tremendously from this change.

It is now a perfect balance of the clergy in Kuwait, with the Salesians of Don Bosco looking after the Salmiya parish and the Capuchin Friars Kuwait City and the Ahmadi parish.

The Capuchin Friars served at Our Lady of Rosary Church, Doha – Qatar and have done excellent contribution to the Parish. According to my family members and friends in Qatar they are dearly missed by the parishioners. They say that the loss of Qatar is a gain for Kuwait.

Incidentally this auspicious installation day 22nd January coincides with events in San Padre Pio’s life where on the 22nd January 1903 San Padre Pio of Pietrelcina took the Franciscan Habit and the name Brother Pio and a year later on 22nd January 1904, Bro. Pio knelt before the altar and made his first profession of the Evangelical Counsels of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. Pray Mother Mary and San Padre Pio intercede to God Almighty to bless our Bishop and Capuchin Friars with good health and wisdom to serve the faithful in the Vine Yard of Christ.

With our prayerful best wishes,

Mario Rebello and family,
Kuwait / Panjim - Goa
