A Review of Showcasing the Premiere of a Konkani Film in Kuwait

International Premiere of 35mm Konkani Celluloid Film "TUM KITEM KORTOLO ASLO?"
The much anticipated e-publicized International Premiere of 35mm Konkani celluloid film "TUM KITEM KORTOLO ASLO" produced by Shamaz Films [Goa] was held on the 22nd October 2010, at the Cinescape Metro, owned & managed by Kuwait National Cinema Company (KNCC).

Kala Mogui Kuwait has done it for the second time in the history of Konkani cinema, if a recently released book "Konknni Cholchitram" by Isidore Dantas has a detailed account of 31 celluloid Konkani films, then the international release of "TUM KITEM KORTOLO ASLO?" can be considered a jewel 32nd celluloid Konkani film released in Kuwait - a place outside the Konkani world but which has over the past four decades has given a substantial boost to Goa and Mangalore-based Konkani artistes, singers, musicians and film producers.

The international premiere marked the 60th anniversary of Konkani cinema, when "MOGACHO ANVDDO" the first Konkani cinema was released in 1950. The celebration got started exactly at 3:15 pm with a thin crowd of a 300 seating capacity Cinescape Metro, a Dolby equipped sound system auditorium at Farwaniya governorate in Kuwait.
KMK President Domingos Araujo introduced Shri. S.K. Mohan, Second Secretary (Cultural), Embassy of India, Actor-Director-Producer, Smt. Sharon Mazarello who also has credits for singing & screenplay, her husband actor, singer & co-producer Shri. Wilson Mazarello who also penned all the lyrics for the film, both flown in specially for the occasion. The ceremony started with the lighting of the traditional lamp by the delegates on the diaz in the presence of Kuwait based film maker Shri T-Bush of T-Bush International Films and another Kuwait based Bollywood personality, stage mentor and the Director of Fankar Arts-Kuwait, Shri Arif Kazi.
The short and sweet celebration had Shri. S.K. Mohan in his speech praise Kala Mogui Kuwait for their efforts in bringing the Konkani cinema in this part of the world. When requested to say a few words Smt. Sharon Mazarello remarked "We were taken by surprise with Domingos Araujo's approach to have an International Premier in the State of Kuwait. She also said Shamaz Films-Goa proudly boasts that the film happens to be the first 35mm celluloid Konkani film which is of the Goans, by the Goans, and for the Goans".

The movie started on schedule, exactly at 3:30pm marking the time in the record books of the 35mm Konkani celluloid films, to be the first movie that is entirely shot in Goa and premiered in a cinema theatre outside the country, hence giving it a status of the first International Premiere of 35mm Konkani celluloid film premiered in Kuwait.

As publicized the movie is having all the ingredients, besides Domnic Dias's cinematography and Balthazar Fernandes music, professional choreography, for the first time fire dancers, orchestra music, hilarious comedy and above all sparkling screenplay and dazzling direction. The movie opened with a title song "TUM KITEM KORTOLO ASLO?" a catchy dance sequence on the stage which kept the viewers spellbound. As it progressed the writer-director intelligently kept the audience glued to their seats till the end.
The story revolves round the newly wedded wife Shaina,(Sharon Mazarello) whose husband Johnny (Pradip Naik) is always away on long trips abroad neglecting his family life, lost in loneliness, Shaina bends a little too much on Sammy (Franky Gonsalves), a very good friend of Johnny. The story is very well written and a must to watch for all the families specially those who have their members working abroad.
Although the response for the film was not to the mark, the President of Kala Mogui Kuwait proudly boosts, "this International Premiere has given a much needed boost to the Konkani cinema by placing it on the global map as the first 35mm Konkani celluloid film premiered at an international arena. Also for the first time Konkani film lovers experienced online booking whereas at Cinescape Metro screen-1 recorded the first booking for two seats E-22 & 23".
Kala Mogui Kuwait thanks each and every viewer who was witness to this history in the making. Kala Mogui Kuwait congratulates the crew and the members of "Tum Kitem Kortolo Aslo?" and wishes Shamaz films Goa a very big success. "Tum Kitem Kortolo also" is an elegantly crafted piece of cinema with a bold theme but with its heart in right place in all departments especially in photography and background music score, though could have been better in many aspects. We thoroughly enjoyed the screening and the film. Congratulations to Sharon and Wilmix.

GOAN MIGRATION IS AN UNHEALTHY TREND..

Last week a local news daily carried an item about Goans acquiring Portuguese citizenship and migrating to European countries for better quality of life there. It is said that the pasture is greener on the other side of fence and some of our Goan brethren have bitten the bait and have experienced a better quality of life in the faraway land by way of better education for their children, better health facilities so on and so forth. But the question staring in our faces today, is this a healthy trend for Goa and Goans, who boast about their unique identity and culture.

Undoubtedly it is an individual decision and nobody has the right to impose one’s ideas or perception on the others. Migration has its advantages and disadvantages, but in Goa our authorities are yet to analyze and study the impact of permanent migrations of Goans to other parts of the world.

So far and some decades back, migration of Goans to Gulf or America or elsewhere in the world were purely for employment reasons and one could be sure that Goans would ultimately return to his roots. But this trend has paved the way for permanent settlement especially among the younger generations who were brought up outside the country or rather the state. This is because this particular generation have not experienced our traditions, cultures, our way of living as they were brought up in foreign land, educated and mingled with children of lot other nationalities with a few Goan families for comfort at the place of residence. Thus the love for Goa to them is alien.

Having said so, I do not wish to cast aspersions on those permanently migrating to other countries. Infact many Goans who have opted or rather forced to work abroad due to lack of opportunities here. They have surely given a boost to our economy. The demand for unskilled labour in other countries has been huge and Goans have cashed in on it and made living for their families in Goa comfortable.

But the current trend or acquiring Portuguese citizenship to settle in Europe is disturbing especially to the Catholic community. According to information provided in the House that 1200 Goans have acquired Portuguese citizenship since 2008 is frightful because a time will come in the near future when we will be struggling to maintain our identity. Firstly because of Goans migrating to some other countries and this vacuum is being filled by migrants from other parts of the country.

The scenario looks even bleak for the Christian community first because for decades now Christian families had adopted two children per family system and the trend is further changing to one child per family. This coupled with the fact that a large section of Christian community seeking employment oversees. If one assess the percentage of Christians in government departments including police department one will realize that barely 5 to 10 percent of the employees are from the Christian community.

To further add to this dwindling numbers a large section of Christian community prefer to stay single because of host of reasons like unemployment and also employment abroad which keeps them away from their families, long working hours with hardly any time for families and some simply do not want the shoulder the burden of marriage and family. To add to this number is the high rate of divorce cases which scuttle family ties.

In contrast to this Hindu communities are more conservative in nature even today, they marry among their own communities, still seek employment closer to home and family, though the trend in Hindu families is also changing to two children system the Hindu community is on a stronger wicket.

Then there is another angle to this Portuguese citizenship. Even after Goans acquire foreign citizenship, it is not mandatory for them to give up their rights in Goa. Infact the government protects their property rights here causing a lot of heartburn to relatives living here. For example one Goan family had migrated to Portugal almost five decades back. Their children were also born and brought there and they have not once bothered to visit Goa. But as of today this same family is demanding share of ancestral property here.

The government has the details of migration with it, it should study the intricacies, complexities and legality of the matter and come out with legislation that allows Goans to acquire Portugal citizenship but at the same time, government should also safeguard the interests of Goans staying behind. If at all Goans have not acquired Gulf citizenship, it is because Gulf countries do not have the policy of granting citizenship to any foreigner. This have proved to be a boon to the state otherwise thousands of Goans would have preferred to acquire citizenship there. Of course in some case some Goan families after working for some years in Gulf have migrated to Canada, Australia, America and even New Zealand.

However whatever said and done migration of Goans in huge numbers is not very healthy for our state and the government should evolve ways and means to discourage the trend. The government should seriously think of creating opportunities for the younger generations to stay back, it should revamp its policies regarding education and health. This would also infuse fresh blood in the functioning and administration of the state and also help in building our economy.

FR. MELWYN REMEMBERED IN KUWAIT.

Fr. Melwyn is seen on both the photos during the Farewll function held in the Church Hall.

It is 8 months now since Fr. Melwyn bade farewell to Kuwait after finishing his 9 year term in Kuwait. Though it is a long period since he left Kuwait yet people in Kuwait still long for him. This is the result of his good work he did in Kuwait Catholic Church for the faithfuls without antagoning them. Fr. Melwyn, during your 9 year period in Kuwait you never acted wild with any of the faithfuls, like a "goonda" you never used physical force against any faithful, you maintained sanctity of your priesthood and of the Church. During your full term in Kuwait you never levied taxes on the faithfuls for the services Church provided, in fact you fully understood the financial difficulties of the people and dealt with them accordingly. You did not commercialise Church services like what Judas did. For this reason faithfuls still long for you and your services.

Fr. Melwyn, the love you acquired thru your good deeds towards all the faithfuls was immense. You always considered Church and Church premises belonging to the faithfuls and not as your father’s property. You have never decorated the Church premises with cosmetics by taxing the poor Catholics but decorated Church with good Catholics. You did not make the Church and Church compound as Showpieces by harassing the faithfuls. You never allowed rubbish faithfuls to serve the Church in different services. You never gave opportunities to the faithfuls to leave Catholicism and embrace other denominations. You did not show roughness and rudeness as if you are a ‘Dada’ of Kuwait Catholicism. You showed your concern for every deserting faithful. You never took pleasure in seeing a devout catholic leaving Catholicism and embracing non-Catholicsm. Your priesthood was genuine Vocation and not profession to make money and to harass Catholics especially Pastoral Helpers. You never acted revengeful, you never misused your priesthood by fighting with faithfuls like a wild animal and thereby bringing disgrace on your priesthood. Priesthood is a right vocation for you because you are full of humility and kindness.

Fr. Melwyn, during your long inning in Kuwait you never humiliated and insulted any faithful. You never acted as insane with any of the faithfuls. You treated the much suppressed domestic folk with respect and kindness. You never acted harsh with them, you always understood their difficulties and always tried to help them. You always gave due respect for their normally suppressed feelings. Knowing their rigid working timings, you fixed their Mass timing accordingly so that they don’t have to inconvenience themselves. Your priesthood in Kuwait was humility for you and not arrogance to harass innocent people. You never behaved as if you are the owner of the Church. You have no pride, no revenge and no arrogance. You very well knew that you are just a visitor in Kuwait and as such you treated the faithfuls with love and kindness.

Fr. Melwyn, you have inherited all the best and humble characteristics of your predecessors namely Fr. Pinto and Fr. Gabriel who are still remembered for their excellent services they rendered for the human cause. I had previllege to associate with you and your predessors in alleviating some of the hardships of our suffering folks, especialy the domestics. You brought honour for the Carmelites for this reason people still long and admire Carmelites. Under Carmelites Church in Kuwait functioned very well. It was Carmelites who put strong base of Catholicsm in Kuwait, this nobody can deny. You and your predecessors with all your humility integrated with the Konkani community in and out of the Church premises for the promotion of our language, culture, tradition and history. May God help you to serve the society more.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.
